Korean Box Office Hits New Milestone in 2015
Korean Exhibition Industry Sets New Benchmark for 5th Consecutive

by Pierce Conran / KoBiz

2015 proved to be another record-breaking year for box office in Korea as ticket sales reached a new peak, making it the fifth year on the trot that a new benchmark has been set. Despite a slow start to the year and the negative effect of the MERS Crisis on theater attendance, a strong second half and some major hits, including four films that went over the ten million viewer threshold (Ode to My Father, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Assassination and Veteran), catapulted the Korean box office to its best year ever.

All told, 217.23 million tickets were sold, which averaged out to 4.23 theater visits per capita in 2015, one of the highest film attendance rates in the world. The figure was up from 2015’s 215.07 million and represented the third time that theater attendance has topped 200 million admissions in Korea.

Ticket sales also reached a new peak in local currency for the seventh consecutive year, reaching KRW 1.72 trillion, however, poor exchange rates this year kept the dollar value (USD 1.46 billion) below 2014’s record USD 1.52 billion.

Local films accounted for 52% of the total, with 112.93 million admissions, which was the second best ever performance for Korean films, behind 2013’s 127.23 million viewers. ticket sales reached KRW 879.6 billion (USD 748.18 million), over last year’s KRW 820.63 billion (USD 751.49 million) from 107.7 million viewers.

Outraged stars to fight cyber bullies

Source: The Korea Times

Celebrities and their agencies are getting bolder with cyber bullies, having determined to fight in court those spreading false facts and slandering the stars.

Singer Junsu from K-pop boy band JYJ said he would legally challenge cyber bullies who slandered him and spread false information, according to the singer's management company C-Jes Entertainment, Saturday. The online attacks reportedly increased after it was confirmed this month that he was dating singer Honey from girl group EXID.

The company said it would identify and sue the bullies for defamation.

"Our lawyer will analyze digital traces left by the bullies and decide whether to file a suit with the prosecutors' office or to report the matter to Gangnam cyber police," Yonhap news agency quoted a company official as saying.

movie_image-650(7).jpg

Actor Lee Jung-jae, also from the company, sued 50 cyber bullies in Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office in November 2015 on charges of spreading false information. The bullies began to attack Lee after it was confirmed last January he was dating a daughter of Daesang's chairman.

FNC Entertainment, which handles popular K-pop bands and top comedians like AOA, FT Island, CNBLUE and Yoo Jae-seok, released a press release Monday, warning cyber bullies.

Denouncing the bullies' baseless arguments and personally harassing comments, the company said the bullies hurt not just the stars, but their families and friends.

In the past, stars tended to forgive cyber bullies, considering their attacks "a sign of interest." But the language has become violent and extreme.

For example, after singer Hong Jin-young revealed that she had a colon polyp, cyber bullies said they were "disappointed it wasn't cancer."

South Korea box office hits record high in 2015

BY JEAN NOH ScreenDaily

Theatrical box office was up 3.1% while admissions also grew; local films took 52% of admissions.

South Korea box office hits record high in 2015

South Korea’s film industry grew 4.2% last year to rack up a record KW2.1 trillion ($1.7bn), according to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC). The governmental organization says the growth is due to increase in box office and ancillary sales.

Theatrical box office was up 3.1% to a record $1.4bn (KW1.71 trillion).

Admissions also went up 1% to a record 217 million, meaning South Koreans saw an average of 4.22 films per person last year. Overall, local films took 52% of admissions in 2015. Local films clocked up 112 million admissions, up 4.9% from the previous year, while foreign films took 104 million, down 2.8%.

TV and internet VOD demand contributed to the growth of the digital online market which saw a 12.7% jump to $270m (KW334.9bn). IPTV grew 15.7% to make up for 78% of ancillary markets, while internet VOD grew 16.7% compared to 2014.

According to KOFIC, exports for the Korean film industry were down 12% to $55.5m due to less demand for local film servicing from international productions, such as the location shoot for The Avengers: Age Of Ultron.

However, sales for completed films went up 11.3% to $29.3 million. This was made up of $16.8m for contracts signed in 2015 plus overages from films previously sold.

The latter saw a massive 62% jump to $12.5m due to increases in foreign box office receipts and profits from films sold to China in 2014 that saw additional sales in ancillary markets.

A total of 121 more films than 2014 sold overseas, bringing last year’s total to 650 films exported.

(CJ E&M)

A new poster of the Korean War blockbuster film “Operation Chromite” was revealed on Tuesday.

It has both Korean and English titles, and also depicts many soldiers in the background who seem to be advancing toward the enemy.

The flick has garnered much attention after it was confirmed that famous actor Liam Neeson would star in the movie, and his stills were unveiled ahead of this poster.

Neeson took the role of famed U.S. General Douglas MacArthur who made a great contribution to liberating South Korea during Korean War.

It portrays heroic Korean troopers who carried out a secret operation called “X-ray” that preceded the Operation Chromite, widely known as Incheon Landing Operation.

Other cast members include actors Lee Jung-jae, Lee Bum-soo, Jung Jun-ho and actress Jin Se-yun.

The film will premiere this year, but the exact date has not been confirmed yet.

The film’s distributor CJ E&M on Friday said the flick finished filming at the movie set in Hapcheon, South Gyeongsang Province.

“Operation Chromite,” named after the code name for the Battle of Incheon, centers on the invasion and battle during the Korean War that turned the tide of the war in favor of South Korea and the U.N. forces. ‘Assassination’ may release in Japan

Last year’s megahit Korean period action film “Assassination,” may hit Japanese screens, an official from the film’s distributor Showbox told the local media on Wednesday.

“It is uncertain whether it will be possible to release the movie in the country (Japan), but we are talking about an exact release date, aiming for July,” added the official.

July is peak season with many moviegoers flocking to theaters, and it had already proved its immense popularity at home, surpassing over 12 million admissions at local box offices.

Above all, its cast is studded with top celebrities who are also well-known to the Japanese fans, such as actress Gianna Jun and actors Lee Jung-jae and Ha Jung-woo.

However, there are concerns at how the Japanese public will react as it revolves around Korean independence fighters against Japan’s occupation of Korea.

It has drawn a lot of attention abroad, including the U.S., China, Singapore and more, but its success in Japan is not assured.

Lee Jung-jae courted to play king’s bodyguard in new historical film
by girlfriday | Dramabeans.com

image

Lee Jung-jae AS A BODYGUARD? Is anyone else remembering Sandglass and having a moment right now? I loved Lee Jung-jae in that drama so damn much. Anyway, he’s up to play a very different kind of bodyguard this time, in a sageuk about Prince Gwanghae called Enemy Soldier. So, less romance and more bromance. It’s a story of a king told through the eyes of his warrior bodyguard, which sounds cool. Also potentially dangerous, since I don’t know who the enemy is in the title.

by Pierce Conran / KoBiz

A year after it bowed on screens in Korea, where it collected a phenomenal 12.7 million admissions (USD 84.16 million), CHOI Dong-hoon’s star-studded period action-thriller Assassination will be granted a theatrical release in neighboring Japan beginning in July.

The news was reported by Japanese film site eiga.com, which speculated that the popularity of Gianna JUN due to her prior hits My Sassy Girl (2001) and Windstruck (2004) has created some interest in Japan for her latest role in CHOI’s blockbuster. JUN earned the Best Actress prize at the Daejong Film Award for her part in the film.

Assassination also picked up the Best Film accolades from the Korean Film Producers Association Awards and the Blue Dragon Awards. The film has screened at numerous prestigious international film events such as the BFI London Film Festival and the Busan and Göteborg International Film Festivals.

JUN stars alongside LEE Jung-jae (New World, 2013) and HA Jung-woo (The Yellow Sea, 2010) in the story which takes place during the Japanese Colonial Era and features Korean independence fighters seeking to take out pro-Japanese forces during the occupation. The film is set both in Korea and Shanghai. Prior to this, JUN and LEE featured together in CHOI’s previous film The Thieves (2012), another massive success in Korea, while JUN and HA were the leads of RYOO Seung-wan’s 2013 action-thriller The Berlin File.

Korean War Flick Raises W500 Million from Crowdfunding

Source: The Chosun Ilbo

A movie featuring Liam Neeson about the Incheon Landing during the Korean War has attracted W500 million in crowdfunding (US$1=W1,148).

If all goes well, "Operation Chromite" will be released later this year.

It tells the story of intelligence officers in a spy operation during the landing, with Neeson appearing as Gen. Douglas MacArthur.

This is the first time that a Korean film production has attracted money through stock-type crowdfunding which gives investors a slice of the profit, however small.

The Financial Services Commission on Wednesday said the producers attracted 288 investors in just seven days and met their target of W500 million.

Investors will receive a 5.6-percent profit after the break-even point of 5 million viewers.

Lee Jung-jae, Jung Woo-sung start agency

Source: INSIDE Korea JoongAng Daily

Actor Lee Jung-jae and his longtime actor friend Jung Woo-sung, two big names in the Korean film scene, have launched an entertainment company together.

Artist Company, the joint business of the two celebrities, put out a press release on Thursday saying, “The two, who have been known each other for more than 20 years, decided to make a reasonable and organized management company after many talks.”

The agency added that the two actors will work hard to nurture young actors.

Lee of “Assassination” (2015) and Jung of “Remember You” (2015) first met in 1998 when they were cast in the hit film “City of the Rising Sun” (1999).

Since then, the two have stayed close friends, and they also once ran a fashion business together.

Lee debuted in 1993, and Jung began his acting career a year later.

The two have many things in common. The two instantly captivated the attention of moviegoers with their smouldering looks, and while they are in their mid-40s, both are still active in the film scene.
