Nami lives in a nice apartment with her businessman husband and teenage daughter. To outward appearances, she is fortunate, but in reality she passes much of her time feeling lonely or desperate. One day, while visiting her mother in the hospital, she runs into one of her old high school classmates, Chunhwa. Overjoyed to see each other, they begin talking and reminiscing about the past, and soon enough they begin to wonder what has become of the other five members of their high school group, which had been called "Sunny." Energized by their reunion, they decide to track down the other women.

With this, director Kang Hyung-chul takes us on a journey, both across Seoul in the search of old friends, and into the past in an extended flashback that shows us how they all became acquainted in 1986. The scenes set at Jindeok Girls' High School, warm and colorful in tone, make for a sharp visual contrast with the scenes set in the present. They center around the young Nami (played by Shim Eun-kyung, a young actress who is quickly gaining recognition for her talent), a shy transfer student, and Chunhwa (Kang So-ra), the self-confident leader of Sunny who invites her into their circle.

The flashback sequences are, to a certain extent, a humorous coming-of-age story, but even more than that, they are about how the bonds of friendship help the girls to overcome the challenges in their lives. The seven-member group is made up of diverse personalities, and they all face different problems at home or at school, but in each case it is their developing friendship that gives them the confidence to face down their troubles. In other hands, such scenes might come across as overly sentimental, but director Kang's natural gift for storytelling and humor keeps us thoroughly engaged.

Meanwhile as we watch the flashback scenes, it starts to cast the scenes set in the present in a new light. Seoul in 2011 feels more sterile and forbidding, and the challenges that face our protagonists seem more serious. Our protagonists have changed too -- it's not just that the confidence and energy of youth have left them, but they have matured in ways we wouldn't have expected. But something happens when these long-lost old friends reunite. Gradually we start to pick up hope that, even 25 years later, their friendship can once again come to their rescue.

Films about women, which center around friendships between women rather than romance, are hard to get produced. Investors see them as having low potential at the box office, and there are few success stories to point to from the past. In the case of Sunny, investment flowed in because second-time director Kang Hyung-chul's previous film Scandal Makers earned $50 million at the box office. It seemed a reasonable gamble, despite the fact that Sunny was to feature a large ensemble cast and no major stars. In the end, not only was it a popular smash hit, but it sold more tickets than the three most expensive Korean films of 2011 (My Way, Sector 7, The Front Line) combined. It's hard enough to make a hit film, but when you succeed so spectacularly in a genre such as this, that's an unusual accomplishment. (Darcy Paquet)

Korean Film Fest in Australia rolls out ambitious 2012 line-upKOBIZ
 In only its third year, the 2012 Korean Film Festival in Australia (KOFFIA) has released its line-up, which contains a variety of contemporary classics as well as some of the Korea’s biggest blockbusters from the last two years. KOFFIA will hold screenings in three different cities across Australia from late August to early September. Panorama, the fest’s largest section and centerpiece, will screen seven features. Headlining is 2011’s undisputed box office champ <War of the Arrows> along with surprise hit <Sunny> and 2012’s Cannes selections -- HONG Sangsoo’s <In Another Country> and IM Sang-soo’s <The Taste of Money>. Rounding out the section is Korea’s 2012 Oscar submission, <The Front Line>, the senior love story <Late Blossom> and another film from the increasingly prolific HONG Sangsoo, <The Day He Arrives>. Highlighting two genres KOFFIA sees as important in contemporary Korean cinema, sections entitled K-Comedy and K-Mystery will each screen three films. K-Comedy will catch one of 2012’s biggest hits thus far, <All About My Wife>, and also jump back in time for the popular 2011 film <DETECTIVE K: Secret of Virtuous Widow> and <Sunny> director KANG Hyoung-chul’s smashing debut, <Speedy Scandal>. K-Mystery unsurprisingly takes a darker turn with <The Yellow Sea>, starring HA Jung-woo, critical darling <Bleak Night> and the shocking tale of school abuse that was based on a true story, <Silenced>. KOFFIA’s Modern Classics this year will include two films from 2003, PARK Chan-wook’s <Oldboy> and KIM Ki-duk’s <Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and... Spring>, along with HUR Jin-ho’s quintessential melodrama, 1998’s <Christmas in August>. The fest’s Documentary section will also feature dk dk KIM Ki-duk, screening his Cannes-winning <Arirang>. Completing the section is the musical-social chronicle of singer Baek-ja ,<The Reason Why I Step>, and the Italian-produced <Through Korean Cinema>, which is based on in-depth interviews with five contemporary Korean directors. New to 2012 is the Animation section, which will feature two wildly different films -- the family-friendly Myung Films hit <Leafie: A Hen into the Wild> and YEUN Sang-ho’s dark and ultra-violent <THE KING OF PIGS>. Finally, KOFFIA will offer two short film sections. The first, the International Short Film Showcase, features 13 recent shorts including festival fare such as KIM Seok-young’s <Anesthesia>, YOON Ki-nam’s <The Metamorphosis> and 2011 Cannes invitee <Ghost>. The second section, the KOFFIA Short Film Competition, is the fest’s sole competition and will screen a variety of Australian shorts that relate to Korea in some fashion -- whether by virtue of their filmmakers, actors, language or topic -- and award cash prizes to the top films, actors and actresses. KOFFIA 2012 will be running in Sydney from August 22-28, Melbourne from September 8-12 and Brisbane from September 27-30. Korean film industry heading to a new peak year

The party continues for Korean movies as they head toward a new peak year with a series of box-office records.
The historical film "Gwanghae: the Man Who Became the King" starring "hallyu" star Lee Byung-hun surpassed the 10 million viewer mark Saturday, becoming the second local film this year to break that milestone. 
Hallyu, or the Korean wave, refers to the popularity of Korean TV dramas, pop music and films abroad.
It is the first time two South Korean films have broken the 10 million audience member mark in their opening year. In Korea, films drawing 3 to 4 million movie-goers are considered a box-office success. Only five other local films have ever passed the 10 million mark.
"The Thieves," a heist movie about 10 Korean and Chinese thieves who plot to steal a diamond from a Macao casino, set a new all-time record earlier this month, drawing an audience of more than 13 million viewers.
Other leaders at the box office this year have been "Dancing Queen" (4.09 million), "Nameless Gangster" (4.68 million), "All About My Wife" (4.58 million), "Architecture 101" (4.1 million), "Deranged" (4.51 million) and "The Grand Heist" (4.91 million).
With those box-office hits, the local film industry is leaping toward another peak year, following 2006 when "The Host" by director Bong Joon-ho set the previous audience record.
After peaking at 60.4 percent in 2006 on the strength of "The Host," the audience occupancy rate of Korean films fell to 42.1 percent in 2008. The audience occupancy rate is the proportion of total audience members for all movies shown here.
The heyday of Korean films was widely anticipated to return the following year with the simultaneous success of "Haeundae" (11.45 million viewers) and "Take Off" (8.48 million viewers). 
The yearly occupancy rate remained at a modest 48.8 percent, however, as Hollywood blockbuster "Avatar" dominated theaters at the end of the year. In 2010, the share declined again to 46.5 percent, making it one of the worst years for local movie sales. 
The local film industry began to recover last year when "War of the Arrows" and "Sunny" made waves, attracting more than 7 million viewers each. Their box-office successes were followed by the popularity of such socially influential films as "Silenced" and "Wandeuk/Punch," both of which sold nearly 5 million tickets.
The success of this year's crop of Korean films is prompting the growth of the local movie market and the market share of Korean films jumped to 70.2 percent in August.
According to the official box-office tracker, the Korean Film Commission, 153 million tickets were sold by local cinemas as of late October, coming near to last year's tally of 159.7 million.
The commission expects the 2012 tally to reach some 180 million by year-end, up 12.6 percent from a year earlier, and the number of viewers of South Korean films to top 100 million.
The success of "Gwanghae" came even though it opened in September, normally an off-season for cinemas, setting a precedent that a well-made film can draw a big audience regardless of when it opens. 
Few films that opened in September have been hits at the Korean box-office, with other exceptions thus far being "The War Of Flower" (6.84 million) and "Silenced" (4.66 million).

Korean Film Festival to feature contemporary trends in Korean cinema Banking on the strength of the Korean Wave in the Philippines, the Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines will be featuring six popular Korean films in the 2013 Korean Film Festival slated to be held from September 18 to October 10 in Manila, Iloilo, Cebu and Davao. The film festival will kick off in SM Megamall and will run from September 18 to 22, to be followed by the SM Iloilo run from September 26 to 29. From October 3 to 6, the film festival will move to SM Cebu and will have its final run on October 10 to 13 at SM Lanang in Davao.
The films to be screened are Green Days (소중한 날의 꿈), Masquerade (광해, 왕이 된 남자), Sunny (써니), A Werewolf Boy (늑대소년), Deranged (연가시), and Dancing Queen (댄싱퀸). The animated film Green Days (소중한 날의 꿈), voiced by actors PARK Shin-hye, SONG Chang-eui and OH Yeon-soo, is a coming-of-age story of Yi-Rang, a track runner, Soo-Min, a pretty transfer student from Seoul and Chul-soo, as they work towards their dreams. Topbilling the period film Masquerade (광해, 왕이 된 남자) are LEE Byung-hun of the G.I Joe fame and HAN Hyo-joo as their respective characters tackle the intricacies of court life during the Joseon dynasty. In a turn of events, King Gwang-hae was poisoned and a court jester who looks remarkably like the king, Ha-sun, fills in the role of the king until the true king recovers fully. Ha-sun’s vastly different personality incites change in the morale among the people in the castle for the better. Third in the roster is the critically-acclaimed film Sunny (써니) that retells the story of seven girls whose friendship stretches far back in high school through the journey of Na-mi, one of the seven girls. Chun-hwa, one of the girls, is presently terminally ill and asks Na-mi to get together the old members of Sunny for the last time before she dies. Popular actors SONG Joong-ki and PARK Bo-young grace the fantasy-romance flick A Werewolf Boy (늑대소년) about the young “wolf boy” and a girl who had just moved to the small rural village as these two strangers find affection from each other against a cold world that shuns them both. In Deranged (연가시), panic grows across the country as an epidemic of suicides occur where the victims jump into the river. The alarmed government declares a state of emergency. Medical supplies salesman Jae-hyuk suspects his family is showing symptoms of the drowning victims and through his brother, Detective Jae-pil, they search for the antidote to such. In Dancing Queen (댄싱퀸) the wife of the Seoul mayoral candidate was a Dancing Queen, formerly a popular talent whose chase for her dreams came to an abrupt stop when her husband, Jung-min, decided to run for office. The movie goes through the journey of Jung-hwa as she balances her life as a wife of a political candidate and as a leader of the Dancing Queen. The 2013 Korean Film Festival is in cooperation with the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), the Korea Tourism Organization – Manila (KTO), the Korea Copyright Commission, SM Cinema, SM Cinema Megamall, SM Cinema Lanang and LG. 6 films to headline 2013 Korean Film Festival in PH

Six popular Korean movies will headline the 2013 Korean Film Festival in the Philippines, which will run from Sept. 18 to Oct. 10 in Manila, Iloilo, Cebu and Davao.
Films that will be screened for free at this year’s festival are “Green Days,” “Masquerade,” “Sunny,” “A Werewolf Boy,” “Deranged” and “Dancing Queen.”
“Green Days” is an animated film released in South Korea in 2011 about Yi-Rang, a track runner; Soo-Min, a pretty transfer student from Seoul; and Chul-soo – all oh whom are working towards their dreams. The characters were voiced by stars Park Shin-hye, Song Chang-eui and Oh Yeon-soo. The movie was shown at the 2011 Busan International Film Festival.
“Masquerade” is an award-winning film starring Lee Byung-hun of the “G.I. Joe” fame and Han Hyo-joo that was released last year. Lee Byung-hun plays the dual roles of King Gwang-hae and court jester Ha-sun. It won the best film awards at the 2012 Grand Bell Awards and the 2013 Baeksang Arts Awards.
“Sunny” is about the story of seven girls whose friendship dates back in high school. Chun-hwa, one of the girls, is terminally ill and asks Na-mi to get together the old members of Sunny for the last time before she dies. The movie’s director, Kang Hyeong-cheol, won as best director at the 2011 Grand Bell Awards and 3rd KOFRA Film Awards.
Stars Song Joong-ki and Park Bo-young headline the fantasy-romance movie “A Werewolf Boy,” which premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival. It became the third top-grossing film in Korea in 2012.

According to the Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines, the Korean Film Festival will start at SM Megamall with screenings scheduled from Sept. 26-29, to be followed at SM Iloilo from Sept. 26 to 29, SM Cebu from Oct. 3-6 and SM Lanang in Davao from Oct. 10-13.
The 2013 Korean Film Festival will be held in cooperation with the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), the Korea Tourism Organization-Manila (KTO), Korea Copyright Commission, SM Cinema, SM Cinema Megamall, SM Cinema Lanang and LG. [Rookies of 2014] Shim Eun-kyeong steps forward with ‘Miss Granny’

One of the most anticipated films in the first half of this year is “Miss Granny,” a fantasy film and a comedy about an old woman in her 70s who somehow regains her physical appearance from when she was 20 years old. 
Playing the role is former child actress Shim Eun-kyeong, whose acting career in the past couple of years saw some dramatic highs, including roles in some of the most successful Korean films. 
In 2011, the 19-year-old actress played Na-mi, a wacky teenager living in 1980s Korea in director Kang Hyeong-cheol’s hit drama film “Sunny.” 
The film became the first movie to attract 5 million viewers that year, and became the second-highest grossing Korean film of 2011, following director Kim Han-min’s period drama “War of the Arrows.” Director Kang described Shim as someone “who is already complete as an actress.”
In 2012, Shim played a young court servant who meets a tragic end in box office hit period drama “Masquerade.” 
In the film, top actor Lee Byung-hun played dual roles, as King Gwanghae, the 15th ruler of Joseon, as well as the fictional Ha-sun, a street actor who ends up standing in for the king when he is poisoned and falls ill. The film became the second-highest grossing film of the year. Though she didn’t play a leading role, Shim gave a memorable performance, especially in the scene where the character makes a very difficult decision to save her beloved, the endangered king.
Choo Chang-min, the director of “Masquerade,” is said to have sent the script of the film to the U.S. ― where Shim was staying at the time ― as he really wanted to cast her for the role. He was said to have been impressed by Shim’s previous performances. 
Shim started acting at the age of nine, and appeared in numerous TV drama series as a child actress. When she was 12, Shim made a memorable appearance as the young Hwang Jin-yi in the eponymous TV drama series on the life of the famous 16th century Joseon courtesan and artist. 
The upcoming comedy is Shim’s first leading role, after receiving much recognition for her supporting performances. She is known for her ability to pull off characters that present unique challenges. For example, Na-mi, the dorky teenager in “Sunny,” spoke in a Jeolla Province dialect with a very heavy accent. She was particularly praised for her delivery of curse words in the movie, in a way that was both natural and memorable. In “Miss Granny,” she is to play an old woman somehow trapped in a young body. 
Director Hwang Dong-hyeok, who directed “Miss Granny,” said Shim was an actress who can pull off “any movie of any genre.”
“It’s hard to believe she is only 19, considering how well she delivers all kinds of emotions,” he said.

Within 27 days of release, the movie "Miss Granny" star Sim Eun-kyeong has set a record of 20.6 million audiences altogether including the movies "Sunny - 2010" and "Masquerade".
Sim Eun-kyeong debuted in 2004 at the age of 10 with the drama "Sweet Buns" and built on her filmography until now with movies and dramas. Her abilities to express and act has already made her one of every director's favorite young actresses.
She is responsible for the 7.45 million's laughs of the 2011 movie "Sunny - 2010" and 12.3 million tears of "Masquerade".
She starred in her first movie since becoming of age and that's "Miss Granny". She took on the role of Oh Doo-ri, a twenty year-old granny and was careful not to miss anything from talking and walking like a granny.
Sim Eun-kyeong has already imprinted a good impression this year and many wonder how far her abilities will stretch.

SHIM Eun-kyoung of MISS GRANNYSuspicious Girl Becomes a Glamorous Actress

These days, few actresses receive as much attention as SHIM Eunkyoung. Though she only just turned 21, she has already accumulated an impressive filmography, having spent nearly half her life performing on screen. They say that you can become an expert if you spend ten years practicing any discipline. Now in the tenth year of her career, SHIM has become a shining star, following the success of the family comedy Miss Granny. She earned a great deal of recognition for her leading role in the comedy, which attracted over 8.6 million viewers. However, moremeaningful for her than those numbers has been the warm praise she has received both from audiences and critics.
Miss Granny introduces a stubborn and willful senior citizen who suddenly turns back into her 20-year-old self after she visits a photo studio to have her picture taken. SHIM plays this granny trapped in the body of ‘the suspicious girl’ (the Korean title for the film) called OH Doo-ri (referencing Audrey Hepburn). In the film, the young actress successfully imitates the mannerisms of NA Moon-hee, who plays the same character in her older years. Due to her youthful features, it almost looks as though SHIM is possessed by an elderly spirit, rather than ‘acting’ as a character. She puts on a thick dialect and her anachronistic,movements incite laughter, while her eyes express her deep love for family and have brought viewers to tears. SHIM has proved through her acting that she’s not just a onehit wonder as she already showed promise as an actress before Miss Granny . As a child, she gained acting experience in TV shows and slowly endeared herself to viewers. In her early years, she took on several roles where she played a sweet tomboy and her comic and dramatic acting was already something that viewers remembered. 
SHIM’s personas can be divided into three categories. Her comedic and easy-going characters, such as those she portrayed in Sunny (2011) and Miss Granny, her darker characters from Hansel and Gretel (2007) and Possessed (2009), and finally her characters with boyish charm such as in the TV show Bad Guy (2010). Building her acting career step by step, she was finally recognized as a rising actress in Korean cinema following her part in YIM Pil-sung’s fantasy horror Hansel and Gretel .
 The film tapped into her natural talent as an actress. She revealed her mysterious charm, playing the sexually abused Younghee, switching between the personas of a little girl and a mature woman. To everybody’s surprise, she was only 14-yearsold at the time.
SHIM played the possessed girl in Possessed , which shone a light on her darker persona. These films were not very successful at the box office, but her acting enriched as a result of taking on these characters. This charming actress was disappointed by the films’ results but her next chance came sooner than she expected. 
KANG Hyoung-chul’s Sunny is a retro comedy that takes place in the 1980s, full of verve and teenage spirit. It became a big domestic hit, attracting more than seven million viewers. SHIM’s acting in the film left a deep impression on viewers. The peak of her heretofore unknown comic abilities came when she parodied her own role from Possessed , an idea she suggested. She was smart enough to make fun of her own character from the past, and after the film’s box office success, she dropped everything and went to America to study for two years. It was not an easy decision to make for an actress whose work had finally became successful. She posted her whereabouts on Twitter from time to time, and while she was still at school, her next move was determined. It was to be the LEE Byung-hun period drama Masquerade (2012). SHIM transformed into a character named Sa-wol, a respectful and loyal maid determined to protect the king in return for his affections. Although it was a supporting role, it became an important part towards the end of the film. Masquerade became the second biggest box office hit of that year.

The accumulated number of viewers for her three films (Sunny, Masquerade and Miss Granny) since Possessed has exceeded 20 million. In Sunny and Miss Granny, her presence was especially important and in terms of box office performance, they are her two major works to date. However, SHIM has a lot more potential and talent to offer. There is no question that she needs to apply herself to continue to develop her talents, but she has a surprisingly big appetite for acting compared to her peers. Whenever she is interviewed, she often says that she is grateful for all the attention despite her poor acting, but this remark is not mere modesty. The truth is that she examines her own acting much more carefully and objectively than viewers do. This statement comes from her serious examination and from her ambition to become an even better actress.
Ever since she started her acting career, she has dreamt of becoming a film director. She repeatedly confesses this dream of hers and it remains an ongoing desire. In her next project, she says she wants to play a serious character rather than another comedic one. For her next film, she takes on the voice of the main character in Seoul Station, the new animation by YEON Sangho (The King of Pigs [2011], The Fake). She looks forward to a variety of roles in her acting career, and of course we are all curious to see where she will go in the next ten years.

Shim Eun-kyung to Promote This Year's Puchon Fantasy Film Fest

Actress Shim Eun-kyung has been named a promotional ambassador for this year's Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival.
At a press event on Thursday, about a month ahead of the festival, Shim said she will set her sights on promoting PiFan. 
PiFan selected Shim to promote the festival as she is a perfect fit for the festival's theme of "love, fantasy and adventure," considering her versatility proven through her stunning performances in numerous films and dramas, her management agency said.
Shim made her acting debut in several TV dramas when she was a child and has expanded her acting career by appearing in hit films such as"Sunny" in 2011 and "Masquerade" in 2012.
