His character grab my attention when i read this one part of the novel translated by blue at her blog:

And to Woon sitting afar, he takes in the sight of Wol. Her white mourning clothes, her tender hands gently laid on top of her knees, her thin, long white neck, and past her lips and her nose, he takes in the sight of her eyes looking only towards the king...

The Moon in a Well – Yi Gyu-bo (Poem in The Moon that Embraces the Sun)

In episode 2 of The Moon that Embraces the Sun (The Sun and the Moon), Heo Yeon Woo wrote a poem for Lee Hwon. The poem is actually “The Moon in a Well” (咏井中月 or 山夕詠井中月) or in Hangul, 산에서 저녁에 우물속 달을 읊다. It’s a peom of the kind of five-character quatrain.

The poem of The Moon in a Well is a beautiful poetry by Yi (Lee) Gyu-bo (이규보 / 李奎報) who lived between 1168-1241, during the Goryeo (Koryo) dynasty, who served in a variety of high-ranking local and central government posts after he passed the civil examination during the reign of King Myeong Jong in 1189.

Here’s The Moon in a Well (詠井中月) poem in its entirety, with Hangul equivalent.

山僧貪月色 (산승탐월색)

幷汲一甁中 (병급일병중)

到寺方應覺 (도사방응각)

甁傾月亦空 (병경월역공)

English translation of The Moon in a Well (詠井中月) by Jeo­Yong Noh:

An acolyte craving the moonlight in a well

Draws water with it into a carafe.

Yet back to the temple, he should see,

Tilting the jar, the moon be gone as well.

The poem basically portrays the desire of human being which is illusory.

The poem actually tells the plot and the fate of the characters in the drama.

Poem of The Moon that Embraces the Sun (The Sun and the Moon)

The poem can be literally translated to the following meaning:

The region beyond the grave (ghost world) began to in turmoil, resulting in the sun and the moon meet. The bright mirror alerts that on the day of full moon, there will be two suns appear in the sky at the same time. Eventually has to rely on cloud to separate the sun and the moon, and makes a sun gone.

The region beyond the grave, refers to the grandmother of Lee Hwon, Queen Yoon (played by Kim Young Ae). Together with consort clan Yoon Tae Hyun (played by Kim Young Soo), they plot a rebellion, influencing the decision of King Seongjo to let the crown price to ascend the throne and become a new king, contributing to the encounter of Lee Hwon (played by Kim Soo Hyun) who represents the sun, and Heo Yeon Woo (played by Han Ga In) who represents the moon.

Mirror, suggests the queen of Lee Hwong, daughter of Yoon Tae Hyun, Yoon Bo Kyung (played by Kim Min Seo). Because her status is gradually replaced with Yeon Woo, she who is ordinary gradually becomes disgusted of Yeon Woo gradually. In the meantime, the another sun Prince Yang Myung (played by Jung Il Woo) who circles around Yeon Woo and Lee Hwon, found out that he should not be living in the shadow of Lee Hwon as such, so he instigates, rises up, decides to compete with Lee Hwon.

If two men ride on a horse, one must ride behind, the co-existent of two suns, there must be one that has to quit in order to maintain peaceful situation. The imperial guard of Lee Hwom, Woon (played by Song Jae Rim), is knowing and mutually cherish to each other with Prince Yang Myung just like brothers. He falls in love with Yeon Woo, the woman who let him realizes himself. Not possible to have it both ways in public or in private, the royalty to the king, the care for the woman, led her to decide to come come forward to cut off the romance between Yeon Woo and Lee Hwon, but the action will cause great harm.

The Moon that embraces the sun, undoubtedly refers to Yeon Woo who becomes a female shaman. Wandering between two suns (Lee Hwon and Yang Myung), femme fatale, the conflict between Lee Hwon and Yang Myung, success or lose all depends on Yeon Woo, how should Yeon Woo quells their fiction? Let them kill each other for final lose-lose situation?

OH MY GOSH, I just read Blue's Chapter 4 recap/translation of the book. It's AMAZING!  I'm in love with this book. Lots of spoilers so don't read if you don't want to know anything that might happen.

I'm praying they follow the book. There's a bath scene for Yeom and it says 

"He must have just finished washing his hair, for his long hair fell across his neck down to the water." (credit to Blue for translating)

Wooooot, does that mean he has the typical sageuk's mane of glory?  (I miss Park Shi Hoo's mane of glory from The Princess Man and Jung Il Woo's mane of glory from Return of Iljimae - LOL!)

It also sounds like from what I read that Princess Minhwa is ... obsessed with Yeom?  (in a sexual way?) Poor girl. Somehow I think the above scene won't be in the drama.

Well, he IS her husband, it's natural for her to desire him And the fact that Yeom is so polite to her, when she's a princess who's pretty much gotten her own way all the time, must drive her somewhat batty. I actually hope they include the bath scene in the drama, it's no fun when it's all prim and proper (the scene in the book doesn't sound indecent anyway).

From what I read, Hwan also hasn't consummated his marriage to Bo Kyung -  he won't touch her or even acknowledge her presence in the the palace.  So we have 2 married men who won't sleep with their wives. HA! I cheered reading that too. I (and I'm sure many others) already hate Bo Kyung, she's just evil. How is a 13 year old girl that evil already?  Yes, in one of the character description on Princess Minhwa, it said something about her having been involved in Yeon Woo's death. (although we know she's not really dead) Yeom marries her not knowing of her involvement. (why would she tell him? "oh by the way, your sister died because of me"  I wonder how long we have to wait before Yeom finds out. And yes, in Yeom's character description on the first page of this thread it says:

Heo Yeom (Song Jae Hee) {Child : Si Wan}

He is the elder brother of Yeon Woo who adores his sister dearly. Although he is marries Princess Min Hwa through an arranged marriage, his heart remains with "Sul" the serving maid of Yeon Woo whom he had grown up with, causing Min Hwa's hatred of him of not thinking of her as a woman.

so at some point Yeom and Seul meet and fall in love. I can't wait for that! Ahhhh...waiting a week for episodes is torture. I really wish this book was available in English!

based on the first two episodes, i think they are changing from the book quite drastically, so the book and the drama should probably be appreciated separately. there are things that the book had that the drama is failing to capture yet at the same time because the drama can offer a visual and sound element that the book cannot offer, it has its merits as well.

- butterfly scene in drama, not in the book. (but the newly published version of the book has two butterflies on the cover)

- the whole conspiracy plot w/ the deaths in ep. 1 of drama, not in the book.

- Ari character, not in the book.

- Minhwa's yedong companions (study and play friends), not in the book.

et cetera

i can't say that the drama is worse than the book because i can truly appreciate aspects of the drama that are stunning on its own.

they are just quite different.

the character Bokyeong is not really evil in the book. she is actually a very minor character in a sense her existence is merely a potential threat and asset but she herself doesn't really push or withdraw she just wants to be left alone and not cause trouble. i actually found her a bit pitiful too though she is not really a righteous person either. just kind of trivial.

I'm so excited to watch this drama!!! Ha Ga In has been one of my favorite drama of all time !!! And yay that Jung IL Woo is going to start in here as well...I really like him in 49 Days !!!!! AHHH, I cannot wait for Eng subs!

Interesting about Bo-kyung, I guess the drama really wants to play up the various tangled relationships. I haven't read the book (only the translation thanks to Blue's hard work), so I'm not too fussed about whether the drama remains true to the book (would be nice if it did, but seems it has veered into another direction). I do hope the pairs that I ship end up together

OMG!! I didn't know there was a book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't know if I want to read because I feel like even the first chapter has spoilers! I wonder if the adult Wol is going to be that outspoken in the drama,

Blue's translations of the book have been INCREDIBLE! I'm so addicted to this book! But everyone's right, there are differences in the drama. Yes, there are spoilers with the book translations. But for me, it's actually making me enjoy the drama even more. The first chapter is actually more about Wol and Hwon and Woon meeting after she becomes a shaman - it's not about their childhood. So that's another difference from the drama. The drama starts out showing them all as children.
