Most of the singers over here are copycat versions of the homeland singers. Most of them just look good but have no substance to back them up like many of the singers in Paris By Night. They all lipsync. The song choices over here are very limited too because people would boycott Paris By Night if the company use the songs written by some artists in VietNam that may have "connection" to the VietNamese Communist Party. I

Anyone likes the homeland commedy shows though like the ones with Bao Quoc, Hong Van, etc.?

I actually do enjoy a variety of OLD, traditional Vietnamese music. I don't know, these days Viet music are either taken from somewhere else or too Americanize...it gets to me. I like stuff from Ngo Thuy Mien, Hoang Thi Tho, Chau Ky and etc.

the reason they lipsing on videos is to make them good music quality. (Asia, PBN, Van Son...)

I think people are getting confused about the whole lip syncing deal....yes, on the recordings like Paris By Night, Asia, Van Son or whatever they're lip syncing but it's because it's a recording think of it as a music video but with an audience there to watch it but for live shows/concerts the real thing the singers DO sing.

Anyway to answer the topic, I'm not a big fan but every now and then I'll hear something I like, I don't actually go searching for Viet music though. I prefer the younger generation artists such as, Ung Hoang Phuc, Cat Tien, Minh Tuyet, etc. "Older" people stuff gets me bored...cai luong as well. Vietnamese music industry imo isn't developed enough yet. Maybe in the future.....hopefully more originality and no cover songs.

I don't mind some Vietnamese music... some songs I like a lot :) like Nhu Loan's "Men Say Tinh Ai" ^_^v

And you can't go past some old school "LK Tinh Yeu" with Ngoc Lan, Trung Hanh and Kieu Nga~

Hmm. Newer music [ie the newer PbN, Asia, VS] don't really interest me. They're getting to be all the same old songs again and again, and the singers, less clothes

But yea... I don't listen to that much VN music compared to Korean/mainstream. I thank my parents for buying all the Vietnamese music DVDs and watching them all the time. *twitch twitch*

At least my mum stopped watching Cai Luong o_o.

[Although sometimes you watch them, and leave for the singing, and you can still follow the storyline :o]

its just everytime i hear a song, it sounds the same, the melody is the same, THE DAM VOICE IS THE SAME.

Not much a fan sorry. ;o

I hate Vietnamese music. I agree. It ALL sounds the same. Especially the old folks stuff.

They just copy copy each other.

im viet maiself and i dotn really lik mai own music lolll. I lik the one back in the country, not the one lik paris by night and stuff. They are j too flashy and i dont think any of them can sing that good without lip-syn :\

me too

i like the old viet music better

because it's more .. them..

now.. they just try too much to be like other countries

when they dont know that stick to what you are is the best...

i definitely dont like mbk.. well, i like the song "dat phuong nam" but the other songs.. they took from Usher-Yeah and Mariah Carey- We belongs together..

see? thats the kind of viet music i like..i mean..like SOME oldies...&& some newies..lolz. i mean, vanson makes it soo effin obvious that they are lip-syncing...but i mean, i like the songs that were krn or chinese && they are translated into viet..i like the lyrics && the music..thats the only the thing that matters to me most...i dont care about the singers && where they sing...i mainly listen to the lyrics..

Vietnamese music are lacklustering lately. I'm not into any music from homeland Vietnam at all!! I came to the US when I was really young, but I was influenced by the music from the past (pre-war). Those music have great quality. Music nowadays sound so similar to each other and the homeland singers all sound the same. Still, I respect that some of you like those type of music and singers.

I like American, Korean, and Chinese music more.

I watch PBN, Asia, and Von Son occassionally, more as a family bonding type thing than actual enjoyment. In my opinion, these shows have decreased in quality over the years. I mean, Von Son used to be SO FUNNY with Bao Lim and Co.

But! While a lot of Vietnamese music is repetitive, what has always attracted me to Vietnamese music are the lyrics of the songs. A lot of the lyrics in Vietnamese songs are really beautiful, with all the metaphors and imagery that can be created with just simple words. I think the meaning that is conveyed in a lot of Vietnamese music, especially the older ballads, is what makes it special in it's own way.

Vietnamese music gets a bad rep because it's so much more underdeveloped compared to other countries, which is true, but Vietnamese music does have it's own charm to offer. Though the pop scene in Vietnamese music is just... no. *_*

(Don't even get me started on cai luong; I have yet to meet ONE Vietnamese person young or old who actually really likes it.)

That said, there are some artists who still have great voices and sing the older songs beautifully. As someone else mentioned, when you watch things like PBN, Asia, Von Son, even though they DO lip sync, it's because these show concerts are basically made for DVD, so the quality of the sound has to be top notch. I've been to a few Vietnamese concerts, and they DO sing live well.

I am personally a *huge* Tran Thai Hoa fan. I don't think I've yet to hear a male singer with quite the depth and warmth of his voice. He just makes the oldies sound so good. Duong Trieu Vu, Minh Tuyet, Quang Dung, Cam Ly and others are also pretty good artists who've impressed me with their singing.

So, it's not preferable to other kinds of music, it's not that bad. At least, not to me. o.O

i love viet songs too!! but then there r som flaws i dont enjoy much is the fact that they usually cover up other song but that dont bother me as much as words which need to b a lil moor creative since they r goin bak n fourth n tellin the same story. i guess tat apply to most song now not only viet but still. i do appriciate the "oldies" even tho it bored me out somtime but wen i listen to the lyric carefully i really enjoy it bcus it's like a work of art written in harmonic melody! LOVE IT FOR SURE!!! GO VIET JUS IMPROVE A LIL N U"LL B SUPER!!

I used to listen to a lot of Vietnamese music mainly because my cousin, brother, and parents does. Some songs are actually quite catchy, but Viet rap is so funny haha. Now I don't anymore.
