GABI: Intelligence Chase over Coffee

It’s the end of 19th century, and Gojong, King of Josoen flees to the Russian legation to save himself from foreign threats. The king comes into contact with western culture during his stay there, and tastes coffee for the first time in his life. After he returns to the palace, Gojong continues to enjoy coffee, while an assassination attempt takes place to kill the king by poisoning his coffee to prevent him from establishing the Korean Empire.

Gabi is a story about turn-of-the-century turmoil told through the genre of mellow, thriller and spy films. Adapted from KIM Tak-hwan’s novel Noseoa Gabi , a tragic love story and intelligence action of Joseon’s first woman barista tangled with a Russian spy and Emperor Gojong form the main storyline. KIM Tak-hwan is also the writer of Secret of Monument for Virtuous Lady , which was made into a movie Detective K: Secret of Virtuous Widow , the biggest Korean film hit during the first quarter that earned 4 million viewers since its release in February. The Title of the novel ‘Noseoa Gabi’ means Russian coffee. It is interesting how the film connects facts with fiction, such a setting as the first barista of Joseon. The scene where Gojong takes his first sip of coffee, something very new at the time, and the Russian legation and steam locomotive scenes recreated by computer graphics will be quite a spectacle to watch.

Director CHANG Yoon-hyun was the pioneer of early Korean Indie films, leading the way with The Night Before Strike (1990) and announced at the start of the Korean New Wave in the late 1990s with The Contact (1997) and Tell Me Something (1999). With Gabi , CHANG intends to jump back up from his slump of the last century, when he consecutively failed with Some and Hwang Jin Yi . When asked why he took the job, director CHANG answers “The original novel was such an interesting piece.” He says “At first I became interested out of curiosity, wanting to know the first person who made coffee in Korea. Yet the more I researched about it, the more I learned new things, which I added onto thescreenplay.” He also adds “So many spectacles will appear on screen, making one wonder did all that really exist during that time.”

Chungmuro’s eyes are on CHANG, watching whether he will overcome his last two misfortunes and make a successful return. The film will be distributed by Cinema Service, an enterprise of KANG Woo-suk, the magic hands of Chungmuro. Once the biggest distributor in the business, it is true Cinema Service is having some difficulties after the recent films company distributed didn’t do too well. Much attention is given to whether ‘Gabi’ will be a breakthrough for Cinema Service. Also it is interesting to predict whether film adapted from KIM Tak-hwan’s novel will make a hit one after another.

The film stars Hanryu star JOO Jin-mo (A Frozen Flower), a great performer PARK Hee-soon (Seven Days) as well as YOO Sun (Moss) and KIM So-yeon (IRIS). JOO plays a first class sniper Ilrich of Russian crooks hovering around Gojong, and KIM So-yeon, Tanya the barista who serves coffee to the Emperor. Making her screen debut with Change (1997), except for Seven Swords (2005), a Hark TSUI film made together by Korea and China, KIM’s works have been mostly on TV. Gabi will make her return to the big screen after 15 years. The mysterious woman, queen of the social circle with two names, BAE Jeong-ja in Korean and Sadako in Japanese, played by YOO Sun. Production Company Ocean Films commented “The film stays almost true to history with about 30% of it being fiction.” Ilrich and Tanya are fictional while BAE is a person who actually existed. The film started in at the end of March and shooting will continue until late June. Total production cost is estimated to be about US$6.5 million (7 billion KRW), and the film is scheduled to be released at the end of the year.

Historical Intrigue with a Side of Coffee

Kim Takhwan’s Russian Coffee is an exhilarating historical tale of the plot to assassinate King Gojong, the 26th king of the Joseon dynasty, set at the end of the 19th century when coffee was first introduced to Korea.

Author of The Banggakbon Murder Case and Lishim, Kim Takhwan is known for his popular novels based on actual historical figures and events. After becoming acquainted with the story of the official interpreter who tried to assassinate King Gojong by slipping opium into his coffee in a late Joseon dynasty history book, Russian Coffee was born. But instead of reproducing the assassination conspiracy as it actually happened, Kim puts his imagination to work to create the livelier tale of Danya, the bold and charming heroine of the novel. Russian Coffee opens with Danya, the daughter of King Gojong’s official interpreter, heading for Russia alone at the age of 19 after her father’s untimely death, where she joins a gang of grifters.

There, Danya joins hands with a Korean man named Ivan, who is part of another gang, and decides to attack a parade of Korean envoys returning from Russia. But instead she follows Ivan, who becomes King Gojong’s interpreter, to Korea, and finds herself in charge of King Gojong’s coffee service at the encouragement of a Russian envoy. In other words, she becomes Korea’s very first barista.

The novel instantly captures readers with its tale of conspiracy, the fate of Joseon hanging in the balance, and Danya’s compassion for the lonely king. The plot intrigues with its twists and turns, but its strongest point is the character of Danya. In contrast to other Joseon dynasty female characters that are depicted as passive and submissive, Danya takes the initiative to forge her own path, leaving a strong impression on readers in the process.

The first Joseon woman barista with a spy feel to it, the coffee and the spy story reminds me of something indeed.

New historical film "Coffee" to crank in next week

A high-budget historical film tentatively titled "Coffee" will crank in next week, revealed the film's promoter Cinema Service on Thursday.

According to a press release from Cinema Service today, 10 billion won film "Coffee," about Korea's first female barista who served King Gojong of the late 19th century, will crank in next Tuesday and be filmed in several locations including Korea, Russia and Japan while eyeing for a release during the latter half of this year.

Actor Joo Jin-mo and actress Kim So-yeon will star in the movie - Kim So-yeon replacing actress Lee Da-hae who early this month, expressed her intention to leave the cast - while the main supporting roles will be played by actor Park Hee-soon and actress Yoo Sun.

Based on a novel named "Russian Coffee" by Kim Tak-hwan and helmed by director Chang Yoon-hyun, the film is set in Korea a century ago when Imperial Japan sent spies to Korea to assassinate then-King Gojong (1852-1919) all to prevent the king's declaration of Korea's independence.

The film itself will depict on the confrontation between Russian and Japanese spies trying to take control over the Korean Peninsula with Joo appearing as a brilliant swindler and double spy to Russia while actress Kim So-yeon will play the royal barista to King Gojong who according to actual historical accounts, was the first Korean to taste Western coffee while seeking refuge at the Russian Embassy.

Born Park Jin-tae, Joo has starred in numbers of films and dramas since his debut in 1996, most notably movies "200 Pound Beauty" (2006) opposite actress Kim A-joong and "A Frozen Flower" (2008) alongside actor Zo In-sung for which he won the award for best male actor at the Baeksang Arts Awards last year.

Kim So-yeon debuted in 1994 via SBS youth drama "Dinosaur Teacher" and has since appeared in numerous hit TV series including "All About Eve" (MBC, 2000), "Autumn Shower" (MBC, 2005, "IRIS"( KBS, 2009), "Princess Prosecutor" (SBS, 2010), "Dr. Champ"(SBS, 2010) and "Athena "(SBS, 2011) as well as films "Change"(1997) and "Seven Swords"(2005).

Actors Kim So Yeon (IRIS) and Joo Jin Mo (A Frozen Flower) have been cast in $10 million film “Coffee.” The big budget movie is based on the novel “Russian Coffee” by Kim Tak Hwan. The story is set in the latter era of the Chosun Dynasty and is about the Japanese assassination attempt on Emperor Gojong. Kim So Yeon replaces Lee Da Hae as Chosun’s first barista Tanya, and Joo Jin Mo plays Russia’s best sniper Ilichi. Park Ye Jin’s boyfriend Park Hee Soon plays Emperor Gojong, who has in fact been a huge fan of coffee. Yoo Seon (Moss) is Sadako who maneuvers Ilichi.

Director Chang Yoon Hyun, who produced movies like Jeon Do Yeon’s debut film The Contact (1997) and Shim Eun Ha’s Tell Me Something (1999), will be directing “Coffee.” The big budget spy blockbuster will start filming March 29th.

This year started off with human drama ("Late Blossom") or comedy dramas ("Suicidal Forecast"). It's not easy to see a heart trembling mellow flick. Which couple from the mellow flicks that are due this later half of this year, are audiences looking forward to see the most?

Actor Joo Jin-mo will hold a fan meeting in Japan this summer, according to his agency JM Company on Tuesday.

Joo's manager told 10Asia over the phone today that the actor is set for a fan meeting in Tokyo on July 25 which is expected to be attended by some 2,000 fans.

The fan meeting was originally set for April 25 but was delayed due to an earthquake and tsunami that has devasted the eastern part of the country on March 11. Over 200 of his fans from Japan had shown up at the actor's fan meeting held in Korea in 2009, his first-ever fan event held since his debut in 1997.

Joo, 36, made his name known in Japan through TV dramas "Fashion 70s" (SBS, 2005) and films "200 Pound Beauty" (2006) and "A Frozen Flower" (2008), the latter project for which he won the award for best male actor at Baeksang Arts Awards in 2009.

Born Park Jin-tae, Joo has appeared in other numerous films and dramas including "Queen of The Game" (2006) as well as films "A Better Tomorrow" (2010) "A Love" (2007), "Puzzle" (2006 ) Liar (2004) and "The Warriors" (2001).

He has been cast as one of the leading characters in a historical film tentatively titled "Coffee" where he will appear as a brilliant swindler and a double spy opposite actress Kim So-yeon who will star as Korea's first barista woman in the 19th century.

Actress Yoo Seon reveals 'romantic wedding pictures'

Actress Yoo Seon revealed her romantic wedding pictures. She will be ringing the bells this 4th of May with lover of 10 years.

She had pictures taken of her focused on the bride and groom with a simple and lovely background in a studio.

Yoo Seon said, "I feel like a bride now".

I Wedding in charge of her wedding said, "Her fellow stars and members of a compassion band made up a number of 15 people and the photo shoot was lively and enjoyable. Yoo Seon and her husband both have outstanding appearances so there was no need for anything else special. They were skilled in their poses and were able to create various concepts unlike other couples".

Yoo Seon is currently in the middle of filming the movie "Russian Coffee" and the wedding will take place in the Sheraton Grand Walker Hill Hotel. With no other host it will be carried out like a service and actor Hwang Jeong-min will sing at the wedding with 'Hamimo'. A compassion band will also bless their wedding this day.

People who were caught spying (maybe Danya was mistaken for treason or something) especially in the old days would be punished severely. She's also wearing the all-white cloth.. like prisoners would wear (picked this from watching the Kdramas)
