Does anyone know if this is based on the manhwa or not? Is it a remake of either of the two recent Il Ji Mae kdramas? Or is it its own beast entirely?

The drama itself is different from the korean version of Iljimae. The only thing they have similar is how they help the poor, bring justice and getting rid of corrupted politicians other than that the drama itself is its own storyline. I recommend this drama really love it. Pretty cool how they drew the characters like comic style matches with the scenes

I LOVE this one. The story, acting, cast and crew were all very good.

I still don't get it why the attention has been so little. And in my humble opinion, Wallace Huo did his best in this drama.

Btw, I found its English title would be " The Vigilantes in Masks "  on IMDB & Douban.

Until we had the brilliant thing that is Lang Ya Bang, this was my favourite China made drama ever.

And yeah, Wallace probably did his best work here and maybe Detective Tang Lang.

I think it was very popular when it came out but Soompi being largely a K drama forum... well... let's say I'm not surprised that it didn't register in a big way here.

How many times have I seen this drama now? I've lost count.  I've even written a fan fic for it.

It has never been very popular since it was released in 2011. Not only here but the popularity on weibo/douban etc.

It is a very good drama.  The fighting choreography was beautiful.  The story engaging and I love all the characters including baddie Edward Siu.  It's also different particularly the starting scene and insertion of comics.   I haven't watch dramas for ages and decided to watch some old movies particularly ancient costumes or wuxia which I have always like when I was a kid.  I must have clicked on numerous wuxia dramas and only watching the beginning and ending so much so I couldn't even remember anything until I chanced upon Vigilantes in Mask!  The poster doesn't look attractive at all but the beginning scene was awesome and that caught my attention.  Love it so much that I bought a genuine DVD for keepsake.

Here's to Kwai Sia Yi Chi Mei.  One my very very favourite fanvids because it included the beautiful fighting choreography.
