Synopsis

Drama 'King Geunchogo' Starring Kam Woo Sung to Begin

The king of Beakje, who was forgotten due to the unification of the three nations by Shilla but who had made Baekje the most powerful naval kingdom in the southeastern region and created a refined culture, will return.

The first story of “King Geunchogo,” which is one of the three stories of the kings that KBS is planning to make as historical dramas, will air its first episode on November 6, and the production team held the production presentation at the Imperial Palace Hotel located in Gangnam on November 1 to inform the public about the beginning of the drama. The director, Yoon Chang Bum, writers Jeong Sung Hee and Yoo Seung Yeol, and cast members Kam Woo Sung, Lee Jong Won, Choi Myeong Gil, Yoon Seung Won, Ahn Jae Mo, Lee Se Eun, Lee Ji Hoon, Jeong Woong In, Han Jeong Soo and Kang Sung Jin participated in the production presentation.

The production director Yoon Chang Bum said, “The drama ‘King Geunchogo’ was produced to discover the roots of Korea. We could not yet find the roots of Beakje, and I think that we might be able to have an opportunity to look back on how Beakje influenced the current times by studying Beakje while we produce this drama. The historical dramas produced by KBS actually aim to become legitimate historical dramas, and we are trying to mix the familiar frame of this historical drama with the modern style of scriptwriting while keeping the balance between them.”

Writer Jeong Sung Hee, who will work with the production director Yoon again after “Seoul 1945,” said, “I anticipate the harmonious cohesion among the grand scale of the historical drama, detailed emotional expression, and the long storyline. Above all, I really hope that all cast members can keep healthy during the coming winter.” Another writer, Yoo Seung Yeol, also said, “The story of father and son seems to be the classic theme to deal with in any story. I anticipate that the relationship between the king and the prince in the drama ‘King Geunchoho’ might have a much stronger effect on the viewers, so people might be able to find it very exciting.”

Actor Kam Woo Sung will make a comeback to the small screen after a five-year break and he will appear in a historical drama for the first time by playing “King Geunchogo,” who had made the nation of Baekje prosperous with his powerful influence beyond the Korean peninsula to China and Japan. Kam expressed his feelings by saying, “I have regarded a historical drama on TV as an easy task. But after I began acting in this historical drama, I came to respect those many senior and junior actors who appear in historical dramas. I have decided to appear in this drama due to a strong curiosity about ‘King Geunchogo.’ I wanted to find out what kind of great king he had been. I will play him in the drama with the thought that the script itself is real. I want to feel pride as a Korean by presenting how great of a history we Koreans had in the past.”

Compared to other historical dramas, the biggest number of young actors will appear in the drama “King Geunchogo.” Actor Lee Jong Won, who will play the great King of Goguryeo, who competes with King Geunchogo, said, “You might be able to feel that this drama has a different atmosphere from previous dramas, and you might be able to sense that the drama has become 'younger.'” KBS’s new historical drama “King Geunchogo” will broadcast its first episode on November 6, and it will be aired every Saturday and Sunday night at 9:40 p.m. on KBS 1TV.

Synopsis

“I, Geunchogo, am the king of conquest who has been requested from the era to establish the great Baek-jae Empire. The path towards conquest is blood-stained: Blood of enemies, blood of my people and sometimes blood of my families… I always ask myself as I walk down this bloody road, “is it for the great cause or for my own selfish desire?” When Buyeogu, the son of King Bi-ryu, and his second queen Jin take to the throne, he changes his name to Geunchogo meaning that he will succeed the mind of the fifth king of Baek-jae, Chogo. He was born to be a hero, but his father didn’t approve him and avoided him, when he was young. Left alone, Geunchogo went through the trauma of being rejected by his father. Every prince dreams of being a king. Geunchogo also dreamed of the empire he would create if he became a king. However, since he is not favored by his father, Geunchogo is expelled from the palace and then lives in his grandfather’s mansion and there learns to be a merchant. Now, since he left the palace, he dreams to travel freely beyond Baek-jae and all around the world where the ocean will take him. However, fate and time choose the hero and fate has different plans for Geunchogo, which is not the life of a free merchant.

나, 근초고는 大백제 건설을 시대로부터 요구받은 정복의 왕이다.

정복의 군주가 가는 길은 피의 길이다. 적국의 피, 내 백성의 피, 때때로 혈육의 피까지.. 넘치는 그 길을 걸으며 나는 항시 내게 묻는다.

大백제 건설이라는 나의 대의는 사욕은 아닌가? 혈육까지 베어야 했던 나의 분노는 순수한가?

비류왕과 제2왕후 진비 사이에서 태어난 제4왕자.

아명은 부여구. 백제의 걸출한 군주였던 제5대 '초고' 왕의 정신을 계승한다는 뜻으로 왕위에 오르면서 근초고(近肖古)로 개명한다.

영웅의 기개를 타고났으나, 그런 왕재를 탐탁지 않게 여긴 아버지 비류왕에게 외면당하고 홀로 던져진 트라우마를 갖고 있다.

근초고 역시 한두 번쯤, 자신이 왕이 되면 어떤 백제를 만들지 몽상해 본 일은 있었다. 하지만, 사대의 일이 있고나서, 근초고는 왕궁에서 쫓겨나 할아버지 흑강공 사훌의 저택으로 가게 되고 오직 장사꾼이 되는 교육만을 받는다. 이일로 근초고는 깊은 상처를 받았다.

어머니 진비와도 떨어져 홀로 지내야 했고, 누구보다 존경했던 아버지 비류왕에게 비토를 당해야했기 때문이다. 왕궁을 떠난 근초고는 언젠가 흑강공의 가업을 승계해 '백제 말고도 요동에서 요서, 중원까지. 그 너머 바다가 닿는 곳이면 온 세상 끝까지를 자유롭게 떠돌아다니며 살겠다.'라는 꿈을 갖게 된다.

하지만, 영웅은 시대와 운명이 만드는 법.

나는 근초고와 동시대에 태어난 비운의 왕일지도 모른다.

하늘은 어찌해서... 나의 시대에 너, 근초고를 내었을까?

고구려 제16대 태왕, 사후 고국원왕이라는 시호를 받는다.

미천왕의 장자로 태어나 서기 331년 부왕이 서거하자, 왕위를 계승한다.

불같은 성정을 지니고 있지만, 그것을 숨길 줄 아는 힘이 있다.

사유에게 군신들이 세를 길러 자신을 압박할 때나, 비류왕과의 회담 때 자신의 분노를 드러내지 않고 참다가 한 순간에 폭발시켜 상대를 잔혹할 만큼 철저히 파괴시켜 버리는 비틀린 냉혹함이 있다.

사유에게는 원대한 꿈이 있었다.

초고왕, 그대는 영웅이 되고 싶은 분이지. 백제가 우선되는 분이 아닙니다.

해씨가문은 서북부 지역의 대표적인 귀족가문으로 온조왕계를 섬기는 동북지역의 진씨 가문과 대립관계에 있다.

교활하다 싶을 만큼 이성적인 성격. 십년 후를 내다보며 암계를 쓰고, 그 누구도 해건의 암계를 따를 인물이 없다.

동부 진씨 가문의 적장자이자 아버지 진정의 뒤를 이어 국상이 되는 섬세하고 치밀하지만 의외로 순진하고 소탈한 성품을 가지고 있는 남자다.

그는 백제 최고의 왕공귀족인 진씨가의 아들로 태어났다. 근초고는 그에게 공적으로는 주군이고, 사적으로는 죽마고우며, 집안으로 본다면 고종사촌 형이다.

호사하지 않아도, 왕후라 불리지 않아도 당신과 함께라면 모든 것을 참아 낼 수 있습니다만 이 한 가지는 용서할 수가 없습니다.

여자인 내 마음과 어머니로서의 내 마음, 그 두 마음을 다 찢어 놓은 당신이 원망스럽습니다.

근초고왕의 제2왕후. 위비랑의 여동생. 근초고와의 사이에서 왕자 부여근을 둔다.

마여왕의 후손으로 부여의 왕족이었으나, 어린 시절 고국이 멸망하자 오라비 위비랑의 등에 업혀 요서로 도망친다.

수적(水賊)이 되었지만, 자신을 끔찍이 아끼는 오라비 위비랑의 헌신적인 애정을 받고 자란다.

요서로 도망친 근초고에게 반한 홍란은 근초고에게 사랑을 고백하지만 근초고에게는 부여화가 아직 마음에 있고, 백제로 돌아가 부왕 비류의 유업을 이어야 하는 소명이 있기에 거절당한다.

하지만 홍란은 근초고를 쫓아 한성으로 오고 결국 근초고는 홍란의 순정을 외면하지 못하고, 자신이 부여화와 혼인 한 후 제2왕후로 거둔다.

After getting berated by King Biryu, Yeogu (Gam Woo-Seong) scampers toward the cliff near Wookriha lake, where he reunites for the first time in 10 years, with Yeohwa (Kim Jisoo) who is praying to a guardian tree. Baekje finishes preparations toward reclamation of old territory taken by Goguryeo. The talks begin on demilitarized zone on territory belonging to Malgal tribe, but slowly the sharp conflicts between the two nations, and Goguryeo's terrifying conspiracy are unveiled. Meanwhile, Yeogu who has been given the exile order leaves Baekje, but he soon realizes Goguryeo's evil plot, and that King Biryu's life is in peril.

Seeing the episode showing the origins of Baekje, with Jumong and Soseono, is a little humorous if you saw Jumong.  Soseono and Jumong act more like people in strained relations typical of that in royal families.  Jumong is an bubble gum, and Soseono is a pinkberry.
