Hi everyone, my first time posting here, but Im a fan of Yejin's acting after watching her numerous films:) She is really one of the best actresses of SK. Anyway, I heard abt her movie Be With You ~ I loved the original Ima Ai Ni Yukimasu and I remember crying at some point watching it (lol). Yuko Takeuchi was phenomenal in it and Im curious to see Yejin's take on the character. I hope the film does well and Im waiting to see it here in North America.

[TV Review] Son Ye-jin conquers Korean cinema, TV

For years, blockbusters starring male actors have dominated the Korean film industry. Female-centered melodramatic films were few and far between and actresses in their late 30s and 40s had a hard time finding roles befitting their status.

Yet, Son Ye-jin, a 36-year-old actress dubbed the "queen of melodrama," is having exceptional success on both the big and small screens.

Son's new film "Be With You," where she plays a mother of a little boy, has seen robust ticket sales since its March 14 release. The romance reached over 2.5 million as of Monday, surpassing the breakeven point of 2 million, and it still ranks as the fifth most viewed film at the box office, signaling its ticketing power may last longer.

On the small screen, Son's drama "Something in the Rain," her comeback after five years, is seeing a continuing rise in the ratings. In it she takes on the role of a woman who falls in love with her best friend's younger brother. The fourth episode aired Saturday on JTBC posted 4.8 percent, outrunning JTBC's most successful drama "The Lady in Dignity" whose fourth episode posted 3.3 percent and finished with 12.1 percent. Hopes run high Son's new drama may go further than "The Lady in Dignity."

The actress, best known for her role in the 2003 film "The Classic" and 2004's "A Moment to Remember," debuted in 2000 with the film "Secret Tears" in a supporting role. Since then her stellar acting career has been studded with commercial successes.

Out of all 17 films Son has starred in as leading actress, only four films didn't meet the breakeven point in the local market _ including "Into the White Night" and "The Truth Beneath."

On the small screen, she continues her winning streak, with the viewership ratings of all her past dramas easily posting over 10 percent.

"Among the actresses who started their careers nearly concurrently, Son and Jun Ji-hyun are the few who made it through to grow into big-name actresses with long-running popularity," culture critic Lee Moon-won said. He says Son's enduring popularity stems from her successful transition from a young actress appealing to male fans to one with largely female fans. "Her fandom started with the explosive support of male fans, but it moved toward women with more stable ticketing power."

In her early acting career, she mostly featured as weak female characters that men protected, creating many male fans and female anti-fans. But by challenging various roles, she continued to expand her acting horizons and earned support from all.

Udine 2018 Review: BE WITH YOU, Pleasant Fantasy Drama Stays the Course

An engaging new vehicle for stars Son Ye-jin and So Ji-sub, directed by Lee Hang-joon.

Pierce Conran, Contributor; Seoul, South Korea (@pierceconran)

The Korean fantasy romance, a genre that has spawned modern classics such as Il Mare and Ditto, has fallen on hard times in recent years but makes a strong case for a return to form with Be With You, an engaging new vehicle for stars Son Ye-jin and So Ji-sub.

Woo-jin and Soo-a are a happily married couple in the countryside who live with their young son Ji-ho, until one day when Soo-a dies unexpectedly. Woo-jin does his best to live on, taking care of Ji-ho. A year to the day following Soo-a's death, she returns to them, but without any memories of who she was.

Based on a Japanese book by Takuji Ichikawa published in 2003 that has already served as the basis for a Japanese film and TV show, Be With You lands in Korea as a tried-and-tested narrative and as such the film marks a successful debut outing for director Lee Hang-joon. Shuffling through familiar codes at a comfortable pace and designing a handsome mise-en-scene that serves to spotlight the leads rather than draw too much attention to itself, Lee's presence at the helm is a confident one.

Son Ye-jin returns to the genre in which she made her name in the first place in films such as A Moment to Remember after spending the last few years expanding her repertoire and cementing her status as a serious and versatile actress. Beyond her natural grace and expressiveness, Son brings a heightened sense of control to Soo-a as she crafts a performance that is hard to draw your eyes away from.

Following last year's period action blockbuster The Battleship Island, So Ji-sub makes a comeback as a hardy yet sensitive lead as Woo-jin. With his strong and chiseled physique, So always has to lose something for his character to work as a romantic lead. In Always it was his voice, here, he loses his wife and confidence. Though admittedly no match for Son's talent, he acquits himself well as he layers his part with quiet charm, inner strength and a considerable dose of vulnerability.

As with other fantasy dramas, Be With Youpresents its supernatural premise early and avoids going into the details, hoping that the viewer will settle in and accept the film's world for what it is. Compared to other films like it, Lee's work offers a lot of exposition in its final stretch, while still remaining firmly rooted in fantasy. This turns out to be a double-edged sword, as the effort to give more weight to the premie is admirable but its execution is convoluted as it ropes together several prosaic Korean twists.

Be With You may be a touch too manufactured to take a place right alongside the modern romantic classics of Korean cinema, but it rises above the majority of heart-tuggers the industry has put forward for much of the past decade. Along with Little Forest, Korean film melodrama seems to be making a quiet comeback in early 2018.

Another review for SYJ and SJS movie “Be with you”

It is very easy to see why Be With You broke box office records in South Korea last month.

A remake of the 2004 Japanese film of the same name, the fantasy melodrama is extremely easy on the eyes, and while the story is nothing extraordinary, it is affecting nonetheless.

Perhaps being a parent to a young child allows me to connect with the characters even more.

The thought of my boy growing up without a mother did cross my mind many times. How will my loved ones cope? The story revolves around that but, of course, the topic is heavily sugar-coated.

I'm not a K-movie aficionado, but I remember watching Son Ye Jin in The Classic (2003) and being impressed by her ability to emote.

The actress has hardly aged and her Soo A is a marvel to behold. Her pretty wardrobe works to her advantage too. So Ji Sub plays the devoted dad Woo Jin convincingly.

When the couple's romance - from a high school infatuation to awkward courtship days - is recounted via flashbacks, it is no surprise why Soo A fell for the sensitive Woo Jin.

When he continues to woo his wife upon her return, each scene is designed to make your heart melt despite you knowing how cliched it is.

All this works because of the flawless chemistry between the two adults.

Child actor Kim Ji Hwan is also a wonder. He wins you over with his charming innocence right from the start, when he climbs into Soo A's wardrobe to fall asleep among her clothes. That simple scene is so tender and bittersweet.

The big reveal at the end is puzzling, but by that time, you are already so invested in the film that you don't even question it.

At 132 minutes, Be With You - which opens here on April 19 - moves at a leisurely pace, slowly revealing nuggets of information about each character.

By the time it reaches the final act, you'd probably already become a soggy mess, but there's no shame in that as the people around you will definitely be sniffling too.
