Korean celebrities Park Shin Hye and Kim Soo Hyun

The K-Drama world has been giving us some precious gems since a while in the disguise of actors. Two of the most popular Korean celebrities, Park Shin Hye and Kim Soo Hyun have shown some really amazing prowess when it’s come to acting. Park Shin Hye has been a part of some incredible super hit projects such as The Heirs, Pinocchio, Sisyphus: The Myth, while Kim Soo Hyun has been a part of It’s Okay To Not Be Okay, My Love From The Star & more.

Today's heartwarming letter in our Dear Eonni series has been penned by Isha from India to actress Park Shin Hye and actor Kim Soo Hyun. Read her letter below.

Dear Ms. Park Shin Hye and Mr. Kim Soo Hyun,

To you, Oppa and Unni my favorite people whom I am watching from far away. I am writing this letter from Pune, Maharashtra, India.

Oppa I saw you first in the drama called (My love from the Star) it kept me numb starting from the very first episode. The chemistry between Min Jun and Song Yi is just remarkable. Then I came across (It's Okay to Not be Okay and Hotel Del Luna) and it just gave me more and more cravings to see you. I can shamelessly admit that you are a Prince Charming and I am in love with you already.

I have a desperate wish of seeing you in a drama with my favourite Unni Park Shin Hye, it will be like a treat to watch two of my favourites together. It will be a dream come true for me, if I ever to get to see you both in my native province. To me, you are two of my favorite human beings. You are constantly in my thoughts, and there is not a moment that goes by when I do not think about you. I know that you will most likely never see this, and that's the pain of this situation. Being so thankful for someone who will never know who you are. I am one in a million people who admire you, look to you for a smile when I am having a bad day, and just being there to support you.

By this I end my long love letter for you and wishing to see you more and more.

Thank you.

Pune, Maharashtra,

tvN’s It’s Okay to Not Be Okay made headlines with only the fact that it’s Kim Soo Hyun’s comeback project since his discharge from the military. Playing the role of caregiver Moon Gang Tae, the actor restrained emotions outwardly while expressing inner depression, emptiness, and loneliness through his eyes. He depicted an unconventional yet affectionate romance with Seo Ye Ji and heartwarming brotherly love with Oh Jung Se.

*** Oh Jung Se‘s speech during the Baeksang Awards has been making headlines for making KSH tears up. He won the award for the Best Supporting Actor at this year’s ceremony for his portrayal as Moon Sang Tae in It’s Okay to Not Be Okay. Their bromance is real off-screen, too! I've watched the drama & he has incredible acting abilities in the series, as his character with autism. He stole the scene every time he appeared on the screen. Part of his speech was : (pls check below) As Oh Jung Se delivered his heartfelt acceptance speech, the camera panned over to Kim Soo Hyun who was captured with tears in his

eyes. Congratulations to Oh Jung Se and his well-deserved award!     :sweating:

"People always say that the supporting actors are there to ‘help’ the main actors. The truth is, the main actors always do well, but the supporting actors can’t do anything without the main actors. I should have helped more in my role, but I ended up receiving so much more in this production.

The dongsaeng that I love so much, Moon Kang Tae (Kim Soo Hyun’s character.) Just looking at his eyes made me overflow with emotions."

How much are Kim Soo-hyun and Song Joong-ki paid? Breaking down K-drama stars' ever-rising salaries

K-dramas are big business and the engines that keep them running are their stars. Hot prime-time shows capture the zeitgeist in South Korea, but they’ve proven just as popular overseas, allowing big-name actors to command extravagant fees.

Yet, as K-dramas become more popular in the streaming market, star salaries have gone haywire.

After Korean dramas first caught the imagination of foreign viewers two decades ago, star salaries were known to be around 20 to 30 million won per episode, but the 100 million won (S$118,000) era soon followed when Korean idol Bae Yong-joon became the first to crack the mark for The Legend in 2007, the last show he headlined before retiring.

Eleven years later, Lee Byung-hun set a new benchmark when his per-episode fee for Mr. Sunshine was revealed to be 150 million won. And as the swelling streaming market heightened the value of Korean dramas around the world, the next milestone came just two years later, in 2020, when Kim Soo-hyun reportedly snagged 200 million won (US$155,000) per episode for It’s Okay to Not Be Okay.

Even that sum pales in comparison with the fees top actors are reputedly able to command in 2021 – there is talk of some being paid 300 million won per episode.

Dizzying as these numbers are, they don’t tell the whole story, as stars with international brand value can receive additional payouts for helping shows attract foreign investment and lucrative product placement deals, known as PPL in Korea.

These stars are undoubtedly valuable, but the astronomical rise in their fees has created an imbalance in the industry.

Stars and their management companies can hold shows to ransom and, while production budgets have risen significantly, the increase in star fees often means a squeeze somewhere else.

According to the Korean Broadcasting Actors Union, average appearance fees actually decreased by around 30 per cent from 2015 to 2019. The reality is that a plurality of the union’s members, 79.4 per cent, earn under 10 million won a year, with just 4.8 per cent earning more than 100 million won.

Furthermore, the inequitable system sees stars bagging ever bigger paydays but assuming none of the risk, unlike the producers. It doesn’t matter if a show is a hit or a flop, the big names get paid the same either way.

Many in the industry are calling for “running guarantees”, a system that would provide actors with a smaller upfront fee and profit participation later down the line, similar to the back end deals we hear of in Hollywood.

That aside, the steep rise in the stars’ salaries is only expected to continue as global streaming giants focus on Korea, increasing the competition for the industry’s biggest draws.
