Damsauce Karats
Korea Shouldn’t Give Up On Legit Sageuk Dramas, And Neither Should You Remember when the term sageuk used to really refer to Korean dramas that were based on historical events or people? No? Just me? Not trying to sound ancient (too late), but at one point, sageuk dramas used to be like 70+ episodes long, were based on old legends or people that existed in Korean history, and were the staple of many Korean grandpas who would watch them while relaxing in Korean spas. Ah the good ol’ days. But now when we think of historical dramas, many of them are actually fusion sageuks that are often based on webtoons and are more fluffy and light-hearted than ever before. Are they super fun? Definitely! But it’s sad to see that people just don’t really get excited about old school historical dramas anymore, which is perhaps why we don’t see these kinds of dramas as often as we used to in K-drama land. As someone who grew up on sageuks, here are six reasons why Korean production companies should continue to make epic historical dramas, and why you should give these kinds of dramas a chance. Warning: potential spoilers for the dramas below. Many are based on true stories They feature different kinds of stories that go beyond the main leads Modern K-dramas are super fun, but you can’t deny that there’s a common pattern of events in many of them. The main leads meet, sparks fly, and then some sort of conflict occurs and they have to overcome it all to be together in the end. While sageuk dramas focus on the main characters and their romance, they also include stories about family, friendships, and other characters that you might not see that much of in fusion sageuk dramas. In “Goddess of Fire,” we not only get to see Jung Yi’s (Moon Geun Young) romance with Prince Gwanghae (Lee Sang Yoon), we also get to see her life in the porcelain workshop with her fellow potters. You’re not just watching the main leads, you’re watching everyone’s lives unfold. And if that isn’t reason enough to watch these, then I don’t know what is. cr:soompi. Damsauce Karats
Kim Seon Ho, Moon Geun Young, And More Attend 1st Script Reading For “Catch The Ghost” The actors of “Catch the Ghost” tested their teamwork. On July 18, the upcoming tvN drama released photos from their script reading. “Catch the Ghost” is an investigative drama about police officers who guard the subway as they try to catch a serial killer known as “Ghost.” At the first script reading, director Shin Yoon Seop and writers So Won and Lee Young Joo were joined by Moon Geun Young (Yoo Ryung — meaning “ghost” in Korean), Kim Seon Ho(Go Ji Seok), Jung Yoo Jin (Ha Ma Ri), Ki Do Hoon (Kim Woo Hyuk), Song Ok Sook (Park Mi Hyun), Jo Jae Yoon (Lee Man Jin), Nam Gi Ae (Han Ae Shim), Ahn Seung Yoon (Kang Soo Ho), Song Sang Eun (Park Mi Hyun), and more. Before the script reading began, director Shin Yoon Seop stated, “I’ll work hard so that it’ll be a joyful project for all of the actors and staff who chose ‘Catch the Ghost.'” Moon Geun Young said, “I’m already excited that I’ll be working with junior and seniors actors who I like. I’ll work hard.” Wittily using the line of the Commissioner of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, Kim Seon Ho added, “I’ll approach this sincerely and seriously so that I won’t be captured [by the criminals].” Director Shin Yoon Seop’s directing with emphasis on reality and the passionate acting of the actors brought the script to life during the table read. Despite this being their first time working together, Moon Geun Young and Kim Seon Ho showed off perfect chemistry as the subway police officers. Moon Geun Young perfectly captured the ambitious desire of a rookie police officer who believes in acting first before thinking with a passionate look in her eyes, facial expressions, and line delivery. Kim Seon Ho showcased detailed emotional acting to portray the head of the subway police force who believes in following the rules no matter what. Jung Yoo Jin, Ki Do Hoon, Song Ok Sook, Jo Jae Yoon, Nam Gi Ae, and Ahn Seung Yoon gained attention for their realistic acting. As the head of the regional investigation unit, Jung Yoo Jin showed her “girl crush” charms and confidence while Ki Do Hoon upped the tension with his charisma. Nam Gi Ae captured the innocent appearance of a mother suffering from dementia while Jo Jae Yoon and Ahn Seung Yoon boasted perfect teamwork and bromance. Other actors including Song Sang Eun, Park Ho San, and Han Ji Sang also stole the scene with their experience and strong acting skills. The four-hour-long script reading reportedly felt like 30 minutes due to the passionate acting of the actors. A source from the drama said, “Along with Moon Geun Young, Kim Seon Ho, Jung Yoo Jin, and Ki Do Hoon, talented actors such as Nam Gi Ae, Jo Jae Yoon, and Song Ok Sook all came out to show off their high quality acting at the script reading. It’ll be unlike other investigation dramas and will be fun as each episode tells various stories and incidents from the subway as they investigate the dark mystery. Please look forward to the first episode.” “Catch the Ghost” will premiere on August 26 at 9:30 p.m. KST as the follow up to “Designated Survivor: 60 Days.” cr:soompi

Moon Geun Young and Kim Seon Ho’s police drama, “Catch the Ghost,” was supposed to begin airing in August but has been pushed back to October 21. tvN stated, “‘Catch the Ghost’ was supposed to premiere on August 26 but we have decided to change it with ‘The Great Show’ in order to ensure a safe and more complete production process. ‘The Great Show’ has been filming since April with the goal of being 100 percent pre-produced [so it is a better fit for the August time slot].” tvN apologized for fans who were looking forward to seeing “Catch the Ghost” and promised to repay their patience with a more improved production. “The Great Show” stars Song Seung Heon as a former National Assembly member who is trying to get back in the Assembly while dealing with his four problematic siblings. Damsauce Karats
Watch: Kim Seon Ho Hilariously Calls For A Defibrillator At “Catch The Ghost” Script Reading With Moon Geun Young tvN’s “Catch the Ghost” has released a fun behind-the-scenes video of the first script reading! The upcoming investigative drama tells the story of police officers who guard the subway as they try to catch the serial killer known as “Ghost.” It stars Moon Geun Young, Kim Seon Ho, Jung Yoo Jin, Ki Do Hoon, Jo Jae Yoon, Ahn Seung Gyun, and more. The newly-released clip focuses on the two main leads. Moon Geun Young showcased fiery ambition as her character Yoo Ryung, a passionate rookie recruit in the subway police who is also looking for her lost younger sibling. Meanwhile, Kim Seon Ho plays Go Ji Seok, Yoo Ryung’s rule-abiding superior officer who gradually opens up after meeting her. He made the whole room laugh when he rigidly acted out his character backing up to adhere to a stop line. When asked what they felt upon hearing the title of the drama, both actors thought that it had to do with ghosts or horror themes. However, Moon Geun Young cheerfully confirmed that the drama isn’t actually scary. While there might not be horror elements in the drama, the clip provided a sneak peek at a hilarious scene in which Kim Seon Ho’s character worries that his heart has stopped. Moon Geun Young timidly asks, “Are you alright?” and Kim Seon Ho says, “I think my heart isn’t beating. Someone get a defibrillator!” making Moon Geun Young and everyone else crack up. Kim Seon Ho further built anticipation for the drama by commenting, “It’s not as stiff as other investigative dramas, and while I read the script I thought, ‘I really want to try living as this character!'” Check out the video below! Due to changes in tvN’s drama schedule, “Catch the Ghost” has been pushed back from it’s original August air date to October 21. In the meantime, check out a teaser here! cr:soompi
