The Curious Case Of Won Bin — Korea’s Most Famous Actor Despite Not Acting The Past 10 Years

How is he still so popular after 10 years of not acting?

Won Bin is one of Korea’s most recognized actors, yet his popularity is honestly perplexing for many new to the Korean entertainment scene. How did he get so popular? Why hasn’t he been acting? These are just some of the questions fans have had since getting to know about him.

Won Bin debuted in 1997 with a small role in the movie, Propose. He continued to take smaller roles until 2000, when he made his breakthrough to the Korean public in Kkokji and Autumn in my HeartAutumn in my Heart in particular shot him to stardom, not only in Korea, but throughout Asia. Won Bin would ride this popularity with roles in the drama Friends, plus lead roles in highly popular films Taegukgi and My Brother.

Then came a 5 year hiatus, where during that time, he served his mandatory military service. Following his military service and a few more years of not acting, he joined the cast of Bong Joon Ho‘s movie Mother, and followed that up with his most notable work that Korean entertainment fans will recognize: The Man from Nowhere.

The Man from Nowhere was released in 2010. That was 10 years ago. Since then, Won Bin has had ZERO acting projects, and yet remains one of Korea’s most beloved actors. So why hasn’t he acted since then? The answer is a combination of his extreme pickiness in selecting works, and some bad luck.

Won Bin got married to Lee Na Young in 2015, and following his marriage and birth of his first child, he was looking to get back into the acting industry. In 2016, he was offered the lead role in the Korean remake version of Umberto Pasolini‘s film Still Life. However, due to differences between the director and Won Bin, he ultimately refused the role.

That same year, The Man from Nowhere was in discussions for a Hollywood remake, and Won Bin was a part of those discussions. He tried to make his comeback through the remake, but poor coordination between the production team and Won Bin’s side caused the appearance to fall through. Director Lee Chang Dong, who produced Burning, was also in discussions to join the production team.

Just recently, Won Bin was in discussions to make his return through a drama instead. He was considering a role in ₩40 billion KRW blockbuster drama The Immortal. Directed by Mr. Sunshine PD Jang Young Woo, the 16 episode drama features a woman who remembers her past life after continuously dying and being reincarnated for 600 years, and a man who is immortal for 600 years. He ended up rejecting this drama as he felt like he was too burdened with returning to the industry through a drama, even though the script and screenplay was excellent.

Through this whole time, Won Bin has only been participating in CF’s, and was most recently spotted filming for another one in May of this year. Part of what makes Won Bin attractive to Koreans are his extremely handsome visuals, but only time will tell when Won Bin makes his long-awaited return to the screen, whether it be the small screen or movie, to show them again.

Can't wait for Won Bin to return to drama, it's way long overdue!  Love his acting & chubby look in Autumn In My Heart.

*** Won Bin turns down major drama and movie..... IDK why he keeps on turning down offers. Is he scared of how long his hiatus has been? Doesn't he love acting anymore? Is he satisfied with his life doing CFs only? We all work to live but, well, I'm sure he has the financial means to do so, anyway. So, he doesn't have to worry about money at all. I heard that he also has a real estate business. Won Bin has always been known for his reserved and quiet personality. I'm hoping to see him act again though. Jun Ji Hyun had many years on hiatus, too from TV, but people didn't forget her. I know people might think that it's such a waste of his face and talent, but he is a normal human who can make his own life decision. I think if acting was his passion, he could have made a comeback any time he wanted. He’s turned down basically every big budget projects offered to him for the past 10 years. ^_^

“John Wick” Director And Writer Team Up For Hollywood Remake Of Won Bin’s “The Man From Nowhere”

The team behind the wildly successful “John Wick” film franchise is reuniting for a Hollywood remake of “The Man from Nowhere”!

According to a new report by Deadline, Chad Stahelski and Derek Kolstad—who directed and wrote all three “John Wick” films respectively—will be teaming up again for the upcoming U.S. remake of the 2010 smash hit “The Man from Nowhere.”

Derek Kolstad will be penning the script for the remake, while Chad Stahelski is said to be producing the upcoming film together with Jason Spitz through their production banner 87Eleven Entertainment. Deadline reports that “insiders say the execs are very high on the script that Kolstad just delivered and plan on meeting with directors for the job, as Stahelski is not expected to direct.”

A dark, gritty action film that went on to become the highest-grossing movie in South Korea in 2010, “The Man from Nowhere” starred Won Bin as a mysterious man who takes on a trafficking ring to save the young child that is his only friend (played by Kim Sae Ron). In spite of its 18+ rating, the iconic film managed to draw over 6.17 million moviegoers to theaters.

Are you excited to see “The Man from Nowhere” be remade into a Hollywood film? Share your thoughts with us in the comments, and check out the original Korean movie starring Won Bin below!

4 Times Korean Actors Got Involved In Ridiculous Dating Rumors

Number 4 ended up happening due to some simple kind actions!

While it’s quite common for K-Pop idols to get involved in ridiculous dating rumors, there have also been plenty of times when it’s happened to Korean actors. Here’s a list of some times when Korean actors got involved in ridiculous dating rumors.

1. Won Bin & Sooyoung (Girls’ Generation)

These two got involved in dating rumors when Celebrity X-Files claimed that the two were in a romantic relationship. This would have been big news at the time, as Sooyoung was already dating Jung Kyung Ho.

Their respective agencies quickly released statements and stated that the rumors were false and that the two had never even met each other!

The 25 best Korean movies of the 21st century

When Parasite won best picture at the Academy Awards earlier this year, it capped an incredible two-decade surge for South Korean cinema, as the country ascended from minor regional player to global entertainment powerhouse.

But while the Korean Wave may have been launched by star-driven melodramas and revenge thrillers, recent years have seen the emergence of independent voices with a strong social conscience.

As with our recent selection of Japanese films , this list is limited to a single entry per filmmaker, as we celebrate the best of South Korean cinema from the 21st century thus far.

Here are our 25 picks, listed below in chronological order:

14. The Man from Nowhere (dir. Lee Jeong-beom, 2010)

In this relentlessly stylish riff on Leon: The Professional, a criminally good-looking Won Bin plays a former special forces agent turned mild-mannered pawnshop proprietor, who must revert to his old, ultra-violent ways after the little girl next door (Kim Sae-won) is abducted by ruthless gangsters.

Roles Won Bin Declined the Past 10 Years

%EB%8B%A4%EC%9A%B4%EB%A1%9C%EB%93%9C-2-1

Recently, it was reported that New Line Cinema will produce the Hollywood remake of The Man from Nowhere. The fact that John Wick director Chad Stahelski participates in the production made headlines. Attention was also drawn to Won Bin, who has been on a hiatus since 2010. Let’s look at the works Won Bin refused during this time.

a01162d719952d51a09a72f6b5d0f5a081eaa5b1

One of the hit movies Won Bin turned down was Train to Busan, a disaster blockbuster directed by Yeon Sang Ho. The role that Gong Yoo played (Suk Woo) was originally offered to Lee Byung Hun and Won Bin. However, Won Bin declined the offer as he believed that Suk Woo doesn’t play a prominent role.

Won Bin was also offered Jo In Sung’s role in That Winter, The Wind Blows. But Won Bin wanted to keep the main character’s job as a host like the original drama, but writer Noh Hee Kyung tried to change it to a gambler, which led to Won Bin’s decline.

The Battleship Island was a work that Won Bin refused to appear in. The exact role Won Bin rejected is not known, but considering Won Bin’s age, it is inferred that it’s probably Choi Chil Sung (So Ji Sub) or Park Moo Young (Song Joong Ki).

%EB%8B%A4%EC%9A%B4%EB%A1%9C%EB%93%9C-6-h

Won Bin almost appeared in the 2012 drama The King 2 Hearts as Lee Jae Ha (Lee Seung Gi). Won Bin was positively considering his appearance on the condition that the production company keep his appearance as a secret until the filming starts. However, they still announced Won Bin’s appearance, and the actor exited the project.

Along with the Gods franchise’s Kang Rim role (Ha Jung Woo) was first offered to Won Bin, Gong Yoo, and Kim Woo Bin. However, it is said that Won Bin rejected the offer after considering various factors, including the fellow actors and story.

Descendants of the Sun is also included in the list. Won Bin was offered to star as Yoo Shi Jin (Song Joong Ki), but finally refused. If he confirmed his appearance, we might have seen Won Bin in military uniform once again.

Last June, Won Bin finally declined the offer he got from drama Immortal (literal translation), referring to the pressure of his return as the reason.

Though we do enjoy seeing him on commercials, we still hope to see him on a sound project soon.

The Remake of ‘Still Life’ that Won Bin Dreamed Of, Sets Off Its Journey with Yoo Hae Jin

Yoo Hae Jin will star in the Korean remake of the film Still Life.

According to media outlets, Yoo Hae Jin has recently confirmed his appearance in the remake version of Still Life. Written and directed by Uberto Pasolini, Still Life follows a council worker charged with finding the next of kin of those who have died alone embarking on a liberating journey as he chases the life of a man who was found dead in the opposite apartment. Director Min Dong Hyun will direct the remake film.

Originally, the remake version was planned in 2016 when Won Bin proposed a close friend to purchase a remake copyright after being fascinated by the original film. Won Bin participated in the project from the get-go and also expressed his intention to star when the production was in full swing. Major investment/distribution companies paid keen attention to the fact that it might just be Won Bin’s comeback project, but the actor exited the project as he continued to express disagreement over the direction of the adaptation.

%EB%B3%B4%EB%8F%84%EC%9E%90%EB%A3%8C%E2%

It was Yoo Hae Jin who revived the Still Life project, which almost fell through when Won Bin dropped out. It is said that Yoo fell in love with the script and decided to make his comeback after a year.

12 Korean Actors Who Never Seem To Age

82b0dd2dd95941be984b69cdd6b4cd5c.jpeg?s=

Although it is often said that beauty fades with time, many Korean actors have yet to even begin to lose their good looks despite being nearly 40 or, unbelievably, having already attained the rank of quadragenarian. Don’t just take my word for it though. Read on to see which Korean actors seem immune to the effects of ageing, and decide for yourself whether the old adage “age is just a number” rings true after all.

Won Bin (42)

Won Bin can be quite elusive and mysterious, leaving fans to wonder if he’ll ever return to the big screen, but one thing that can be said with certainty is that he hasn’t aged at all during his absence from the public eye. Though it’s been 10 years since he starred in “The Man From Nowhere,” you’d never guess the film was that old based on recent photos of him.

Netizens discuss why these actors are likely candidates to work with Song Hye Kyo in Kim Eun Sook's new drama

Earlier today, it was confirmed that star drama scriptwriter Kim Eun Sook is working on a new project this year! Furthermore, the writer has confirmed that she will be working with actress Song Hye Kyo again for the first time in 5 years since 'Descendants of the Sun', causing a major stir among drama fans already even though no further details (i.e. the drama's genre, storyline, etc) have been revealed!

Now, drama lovers have come together for a round of 'Drama Produce 101' to try and guess who might be cast as the male lead of Kim Eun Sook's newest work!

It's no question that the star scriptwriter is known to work with actors and actresses multiple times across different projects. This was the case with her most recent production, SBS's 'The King: Eternal Monarch', where she re-cast Lee Min Ho ('Heirs', 2013) and Kim Go Eun ('Goblin', 2016) as her story leads.

So who are some of the stars most likely to be cast/re-cast this time in Kim Eun Sook's brand new drama, opposite Song Hye Kyo? Here are the nominees!

5. Won Bin

(Won Bin has also never starred in a Kim Eun Sook production. However, it's known that every time Kim Eun Sook starts working on a new project, she offers the male lead role first to Won Bin. He's known as Kim Eun Sook's #1 dream pick, so much that she named the male lead of 'A Gentleman's Dignity' after Won Bin's real name. In the case of this particular project, if Won Bin were to finally answer Kim Eun Sook's casting call, it would also mean Won Bin's reunion with Song Hye Kyo 21 years after 'Autumn In My Heart'.)

1609827513-20210104-wonbin.jpg

Some of netizens' comments and reactions:

"I've always wanted to see Lee Jong Suk as the male lead of one of Eun Sook's dramas TT."
"Wait the female lead is Song Hye Kyo? Then it's 100% Won Bin! Let's go!!"
"Ooohh either Lee Jong Suk or Kim Woo Bin."
"I love both Kim Woo Bin and Gong Yoo TT."
"So Ji Sub in an Eun Sook drama plz."
"I feel like Kim Woo Bin would look great with Song Hye Kyo."
"This time let's go with So Ji Sub forreal!"
"Does Kim Eun Sook still want Won Bin as her #1 pick kekekeke."
"Even though I do want to see Lee Jong Suk in another Eun Sook drama, Idk if he matches with Song Hye Kyo..."
"If it's Won Bin all of Korea might just flip;;; Autumn In My Heart reunion OMFG..."
"When I see actors coming out on her dramas again I feel like I'm watching the same character from that other drama... So it's So Ji Sub for me."
