*** The press conference for Netflix’s latest movie My Name is Loh Kiwan, was held on the morning of February 27th with Song Joong Ki, Choi Sung Eun and the director in attendance. Reflecting on the film, Song Joong Ki expressed his connection to the project, “Every film is a journey, but ‘My Name is Loh Kiwan’ was an especially long one. Because of its emotional depth, I’m more nervous than ever. It’s a film about Kiwan’s life journey, carrying the fragile hope of starting anew in Belgium, and his relentless struggle to survive. Through the character of Marie, he finds healing, making this film a moving narrative of hope and resilience. I first read it like 6 or 7 years ago,” he shared. “The freshness and the poignant storyline immediately struck a chord with me. I wasn’t aware that Kim Hee Jin was the writer at the time, but the script alone was enough to convince me of its potential.” When asked if he had ever tackled a role that required a dialect throughout his career, He shared, “This was a first for me. As an actor, embracing such challenges is part of the craft I’ve always been eager to explore. Delving into the North Korean dialect was not only a fresh experience but one that I’m profoundly satisfied with.” My Name is Loh Kiwan is set to captivate audiences worldwide as it premieres on Netflix on March 1st, reaching over 190 countries.   :heart1:

*** On the morning of February 26, a post about the recent appearance of Song Joong-ki’s family, including his wife and son, was published and immediately drew attention. The post was published by a fan who ran into the Song family.  In particular, the original poster shared that Song Joong-ki’s wife takes very cool photos, and when taking pictures, she counted in Korean. Song Joong-ki speaks Korean to his wife slowly, and she can understand. But of course, he still has to act as an interpreter when his wife chats with Koreans, the fan disclosed. The fan also said that Song Joong-ki’s son is very handsome and friendly, and described the entire Song family as “extremely kind”. According to the fan, Song Joong-ki used various affectionate pet names with his wife. Back last year, Song Joong-ki first mentioned his son’s appearance on a TV program. *** I've watched his latest movie “Hopeless”.   I didn't really enjoy it much. It draws the viewers into 120 minutes of character misery without offering much else. The movie showed the underworld life in South Korea, and how many innocent people are forced to enter a life guided by the illegal to survive. Here, there were moments of extreme violence. It simmers with tension. The hopeless young man joins the all-male gang because he desperately needs to earn some cash. There is no humor in this movie. At more than two hours, this Korean misery fest feels interminably long. The biggest takeaways are that young people in desperate need of money can do silly things.  :kaching1:

Song Joong-ki says ‘My Name is Loh Kiwan’ was emotional, fresh work for him

Song plays North Korean defector for first time in his 15-year career

Actor Song Joong-ki, who appears as North Korean defector Loh Ki-wan in the new Netflix film “My Name is Loh Kiwan,” said playing Loh was an emotionally overwhelming, fresh work for him.

“I read the script for the first time six or seven years ago. I didn’t know anything about the story, but the first thing that came to my mind after completing reading was that this was a heartbreaking story, but at the same time, something that I could try for the first time with a fresh mind,” Song told reporters during a press conference held in Seoul on Tuesday.

The film depicts Loh’s struggles in Belgium as a refugee and his encounter with Mari (Choi Sung-eun) who is despondent about life and love. The film is an adaptation of the 2011 novel “I Met Loh Kiwan” by Cho Hae-jin.

Song said that not only did he play a North Korean defector for the first time in his 15-year career, but it was also his first time acting in a dialect.

“Although I lack many things as an actor, I wanted to try acting in a dialect. That was what I thought to refresh myself as an actor. It was fun to try and I’m very satisfied with it,” said Song.

Song has shown great versatility in his filmography, having played a vagrant father who lost his daughter in space in the Netflix sci-fi film “Space Sweepers,” a righteous lawyer working for the Italian mafia in “Vincenzo” and a character who is falsely accused of embezzlement and killed by the youngest son of a wealthy family in “Reborn Rich.”

For “My Name is Loh Kiwan,” Song said he asked for help from director Kim Hee-jin.

Kim, who wrote and directed “My Name is Loh Kiwan,” came to the film industry’s attention with her 2010 indie film, “A Brand New Journey,” and has won various awards at local film festivals including at the Jeonju International Film Festival.

“I began working as a writer for this project. But later I was asked to adapt the story into a melodrama and romance. I was very excited to make my cinematic debut with this beautiful story,” Kim told reporters, adding that she wrote the story thinking of Song as the protagonist.

Choi Sung-eun, who stars as Marie, who falls in love with Loh Kiwan, said she didn’t know at first what kind of movie “My Name is Loh Kiwan” was.

“At first it was very difficult to name the movie's genre because it has multifaceted aspects of a human being and our community. But, what makes one continue living is any type of love,” said Choi, referring to parental love and romantic relationships between lovers that appear in the movie.

“My Name is Loh Kiwan” will be released Friday on Netflix.

A story of a North Korean defector never fails to bore, but upcoming Netflix film "My Name is Loh Kiwan" is more about the love that even the most marginalized of people find despite their ordeal, according to lead actor Song Joong-ki.

The film, an adaptation of the 2011 short novel “I Met Loh Kiwan” by Cho Hae-jin, follows the story of Loh Kiwan, a North Korean defector who goes to Belgium to receive refugee status. Determined to survive, Loh is left stranded in a country in which he doesn’t speak the language, nor has any means of getting by.

Song takes the role of Loh in his first work in over five months since the neo-noir film "Hopeless" (2023). He previously played lead roles in KBS2 drama series "Descendants of the Sun" (2016) and JTBC's "Reborn Rich" (2022).

“I still get emotional thinking of what Kiwan must have felt as an outsider, alone in a place where he cannot speak the language yet still trying to survive,” Song said at a press conference on Tuesday in Mapo District, western Seoul, ahead of the movie’s release on March 1.

"I wrote the word guilt on my script while filming and agonized over how to unravel the emotion. I think Loh Kiwan was healed after he got rid of his guilt," the actor said.

"In the end, it was people. The connections you make with the people in your life [is what heals you]. That's my takeaway from the film."

"My Name is Loh Kiwan" is director Kim Hee-jin's first feature film, for which she also wrote the screenplay for. Her filmography includes debut short film "A Brand New Journey" (2010), which won awards at the Seoul Independent Film Festival and the Jeonju International Film Festival, and shorts "MJ" (2012) and "Neighbors" (2014).

“Loh Kiwan is a person with grit who can make something bloom even in the muddiest waters,” Kim said. “Viewers will be captivated by the many sides of Song. [At times] he has such a sorrowful expression, while at other times he puts on the most austere, frigid persona.”

In the midst of his struggles, Loh encounters the troubled Choi Sung-eun's Marie, a Belgian citizen to Korean immigrant parents, after she steals his money. The story then follows the connection the two strangers form as they navigate a society and world in which they don’t feel they belong.

“[Marie] is someone who goes through a lot of change,” Choi said. Choi is known for her lead role in Netflix original series “The Sound of Magic” (2022) and her supporting role in JTBC drama "Beyond Evil" (2021).

“She is someone who has lost her reason and motivation to live. She finds her will for life after meeting Kiwan."

"Love, of any kind, is what urges you on to live,” she added.

Netflix released the official trailer for “My Name is Loh Kiwan” on Feb. 11. It will be available exclusively on the streaming service from March 1.

The film was in Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos's list of Korean films by first-time writers or directors to look forward to this year, along with film "Bandland Hunters" and upcoming series "The Frog."

*** There's a person who has recently stirred up quite a bit of buzz for his striking resemblance to Song Joong Ki. He was born in 1988, making him 35 years old this year. Moreover, he has just crossed the remarkable milestone of exceeding 1.2 trillion KRW (approximately 900 million USD) in stock ownership. He's a businessperson whom Song Joong Ki himself might envy. He's none other than Kim Byeong Hoon, the founder and CEO of the beauty tech company APR Corp. It's quite rare for someone in Korea to become a billionaire solely through entrepreneurship, without any inheritance, especially in their thirties. Personally, I found his business ability far more interesting/impressive. The photo with Yoo Jae Suk does resemble Song Joong Ki a little, like 10% but also looks more like Lee Jun Ki to me. But, there's actually some resemblance!   :Megalol:

Heartthrob takes on North Korean defector role in new Netflix movie

By Lee Gyu-lee

Actor Song Joong-ki is returning to Netflix with the new original movie "My Name Is Loh Kiwan," where he will portray the titular character. This comes three years after his appearance in the platform's sci-fi blockbuster "Space Sweepers."

The melodrama, adapted from Cho Hae-jin’s novel “I Met Loh Kiwan” (2011), centers on a North Korean defector named Loh Ki-wan (Song), who arrives penniless in Belgium, seeking to obtain refugee status. As Loh struggles to survive in the foreign land, he meets a woman named Mari (Choi Sung-eun), who has lost all hope.

Despite their initial bitter encounter, the two characters gradually grow closer, bringing unexpected changes to each other’s desolate lives.

“'My Name Is Loh Kiwan’ depicts the life of Ki-wan, who embarks on a journey to Belgium with the last glimmer of hope in his life when he feels completely cut off. The film captures his arduous journey as he struggles to survive in Belgium at any cost,” Song said during a press conference for the film at Hotel Naru Seoul MGallery Ambassador in Mapo District, western Seoul, Tuesday.

“Within that (journey), a lot happens and he experiences healing. So I would like to describe our work as a healing movie.”

The film, set to premiere on the platform on March 1, marks the feature directorial debut of newcomer Kim Hee-jin. Initially joining the project as the scriptwriter, the director revealed that she envisioned Song in the lead role right from the script's inception.

“I initially joined the project as the writer, and later, I was given the opportunity to adapt it into a film and direct it. I really enjoyed the original novel and felt it was a very good opportunity to debut with such a beautiful movie,” the director said.

“I wrote this piece, thinking of Song. I saw Loh as someone with a resilient spirit, like a blooming flower in a mud puddle. Throughout his extensive career as an actor, Song has portrayed a diverse range of characters, but there's a facet of him that shines uniquely in our work. He can evoke sympathy, prompting viewers to want to embrace him, yet at times, he can also send chills down your spine, leaving you transfixed. It's these multifaceted performances that will captivate the audience."

Song revealed that he had initially turned down the film, but eventually was drawn to its refreshing plot.

“When I received the script about six or seven years ago, I declined it... I couldn't connect with the story at first. However, as time passed, I found myself troubled by the fact that the production hadn't materialized yet, as it was indeed a remarkable piece,” he said.

“In a way, I felt a sense of regret. When I received the script again while filming ‘Reborn Rich,’ it felt like fate. The story resonated with me deeply and felt both poignant and refreshingly original.”

He added that his first attempt at acting in the North Korean dialect was a satisfying experience.

“As an actor, it was a challenge I had long wanted to take on. I accepted the role because I personally sought to push my boundaries and explore new territory.”
