Showbox scores multiple sales on disaster drama ‘Sinkhole’ (exclusive)

BY JEAN NOH | 3 JULY 2020

South Korean distributor Showbox has locked pre-sales deals on disaster drama Sinkhole to a raft of territories led by Taiwan (MovieCloud) and Hong Kong (Edko Films) following the virtual Cannes market.

The film has also sold to Indonesia (Falcon), Philippines (MVP Viva), and Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia and East Timor (Encore Films).

Directed by Kim Ji-hoon, whose credits include luxury high-rise inferno film Tower and sci-fi action thriller Sector 7, Sinkhole stars Cha Seung-won (Cheer Up, Mr. Lee), Kim Sung-kyun (Fengshui) and Lee Kwang-soo (Tazza: One Eyed Jack).

When Dong-won (Kim) and his family finally move into their own house bought after 11 years of hard work, he invites his colleagues for a housewarming party, but a heavy rain creates a giant sinkhole that swallows up the house and everyone inside. Hundreds of metres down, Dong-won, his guests and his neighbour Man-su (Cha) have to find a way out before the downpour fills the sinkhole.

Esther Yeung, head of sales & distribution at Edko Films, which previously distributed Kim Ji-hoon’s Tower, said: “We are thrilled to work with director Kim Ji-hoon again. As he has powerfully visualised the impacts in Tower, the story of Sinkhole also tells [of] the threat and the potential disaster inherent in every city. I found this sense of real life crisis very timely and it’s also something that our audience can immediately relate to today.”

MovieCloud managing director Wayne Chang said the company decided to pick up Sinkhole as “a must-see film in 2020” as it is “full of action, disaster and Korean-style sarcastic humour” and “brings a spectacularly fun and exciting ride.”

Sinkhole is currently in post-production. Showbox is in discussions for a local release date to be set for later this year.

‘Three Meals a Day: Fishing Village 5’ Production Team Promises to Recover the Damages Done by Fire

by krishkim

It is revealed that a fire broke out in Jukgul Island during the preparation stage of Three Meals a Day: Fishing Village 5 shooting.

On July 10, the final episode of tvN’s Three Meals a Day: Fishing Village 5 showed three members preparing to part ways with the island they visited for the past couple of months. Later, Cha Seung Won and Yoo Hae Jin got together in Seoul for after party. (Son Ho Jun couldn’t attend due to his drama schedules)

As they wrapped up their final shoot, producer Na Young Suk confessed, “There was so much garbage on the island so we called a cleaning company, and there was a fire.” He added that on April 2, a waste disposal company cleaned the island to prepare for filming, and a big fire broke out while burning trash without permission.

He said, “It was a big incident, and because we have the responsibility of supervision, it would be a natural step to restore it on our own if possible. We will restore the nature until the residents are satisfied. I wanted to take this opportunity to explain this to you guys and the viewers.”

Fortunately, there were no casualties. The production team explained in a subtitle, “After discussing with the residents, the Korea Forest Service, the Wando County Office, and the Wando Forest Association, we decided to follow the procedures for the forest restoration project starting next spring. Although we may not be able to return it to how it was before, we will work hard to restore the forest.”

Then they expressed their gratitude to the residents, saying, “We would like to thank the residents who generously allowed us to film in Jukgul Island despite the incident.”

by Pierce Conran | Aug 05, 2020

Director PARK Hoon-jung Makes Lido Debut with Out of Competition Invite

Though the Cannes Film Festival was forced to forgo staging an offline event this year, the Venice International Film Festival is set to return to the Lido in September and it will be bringing a new Korean film with it. Making his Venice debut will be Director PARK Hoon-jung, whose Night in Paradise (2019) will have its world premiere as an out of competition screening at the festival.

PARK’s film takes place on Jeju Island and features UM Tae-goo as a young man on the run from gangsters and a woman who is driven to the edge, played by JEON Yeo-been. Co-stars include CHA Seung-won (Believer, 2018), LEE Ki-young (The Witch : Part 1. The Subversion, 2018) and PARK Ho-san (Jukdo Surfing Diary).

UM Tae-goo has been a steady and growing presence in commercial films since Veteran (2015) and drew particular notice from his impressive turn as the villain in The Age of Shadows (2016). He also often appears in indie fare, such as My Punch-drunk Boxer (2019).

JEON Yeo-been is known for the indie After My Death (2018), a New Currents award winner at the Busan International Film Festival in 2017, and most recently appeared in the Lunar New Year comedy SECRET ZOO earlier this year.

Director PARK, who first came to the notice of cinephiles as the screenwriter of both RYOO Seung-wan’s The Unjust (2010) and KIM Jee-woon’s I Saw the Devil (2010), debuted as a filmmaker with The Showdown in 2011. But it was his 2013 gangland hit New World that cemented his status as a future leading light of the industry. He went on to make The Tiger (2015), V.I.P. (2017) and The Witch : Part 1. The Subversion (2018). Night in Paradise (2019) is his sixth film.

Night in Paradise (2019) is the first Korean feature to be invited to Venice since 2016, when both KIM Jee-woon’s The Age of Shadows (2016) and KIM Ki-duk’s THE NET (2016) screened out of competition. This year’s 77th edition of the Venice International Film Festival will take place between September 3 and 12.

The movie Sinkhole, starring Cha Seung Won, Kim Sung Kyun, and Lee Kwang Soo, has postponed its release to this winter.

According to a media outlet, SHOWBOX has tentatively decided to postpone the release of Sinkhole, which was scheduled to be released in September (Chuseok season) to this winter.

As the number of COVID-19 confirmed cases has skyrocketed and social distancing policy has been upgraded to level 2, more and more movies are either canceling or postponing their release.

Since Sinkhole has been considered one of the most anticipated films distributed by SHOWBOX this year and was initially scheduled to be released during the summer season, it is analyzed that the movie has chosen a winter season that normally attracts a large number of moviegoers rather than the Chuseok season that has many elements of anxiety due to current COVID-19 situation.

An official from SHOWBOX said, “It is true that the release of Sinkhole has been temporarily postponed to this winter. But because we have no idea how the COVID-19 situation will proceed, we can’t be certain of winter release either. We will wait and see various variables in the future.”

Meanwhile, Sinkhole is a real-life disaster comedy movie about newly built villa falls into a sinkhole with its residents trapped inside.

Two films will be released on Netflix, not in theaters – Call and Night in Paradise.

According to a media outlet, the investment distributor NEW has decided to release Call and Night in Paradise through Netflix, not theaters. The company is continuing detailed discussions with Netflix.

Call is a thriller film about two women living in different times getting connected through a phone call. Park Shin Hye and Jeon Jong Seo took the lead roles. Before the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, the two actresses participated in a press conference and appeared in entertainment shows, but the official release was postponed. After repeatedly delaying the release in the aftermath of COVID-19, the film chose to go to Netflix.

Night in Paradise tells the story of a man who has become the target of an organization and a woman standing at the end of her life. Uhm Tae Goo, Jeon Yeo Bin, Cha Seung Won, Lee Ki Young, and Park Ho San appeared in the film. Night in Paradise, the only Korean feature film to be invited to this year’s Venice International Film Festival, receives much attention for being the next noir film by New World director Park Jong Hoon.

Since Time to Hunt, these two films became the second Korean movies to go straight to Netflix without being released first in theaters. As Korean content is meeting more and more audiences around the world through Netflix, expectations for these two films are also mounting.

Cha Seung Won has confirmed his appearance in the new drama That Night (literal title).

According to media outlets, Cha Seung Woon will return to the small screen after 3 years with Kim Soo Hyun.  Their new drama That Night explores the criminal justice system from a popular perspective through the intense story of two men surrounding a woman’s murder.

For this drama, Cha will take on the role of a lawyer Shin Joong Han, the only person who offers a helping hand to Kim Hyun Soo (Kim Soo Hyun), who fell into the abyss after being named the prime suspect. Shin Joong Han is the kind of person who has never not been the “top-notch” of the world. But after meeting Kim Hyun Soo, he slowly changes as he goes up against the unreasonable judicial justice.

As Cha Seung Won is a “trusted” actor who has received much love for various works such as City Hall, The Greatest Love and Ghost House, his meeting with another “trusted” actor Kim Soo Hyun is already making headlines.

That Night, the Korean remake of BBC series Criminal Justice, will start filming in the first half of this year and premiere in the second half.

Big-name Western hit TV series set to be remade in S. Korea

By Kim Boram | January 06, 2021

SEOUL, Jan. 6 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's TV series production houses have turned their eyes to hit Western shows as part of efforts to meet diversified demand of viewers across the world.

Chorokbaem Media, a local production company behind big-name TV series like "The Penthouse: War in Life" (2020) and "Memories of the Alhambra" (2018), will produce the Korean edition of "Criminal Justice," a popular crime drama on the BBC in 2008, later this year.  Titled "That Night," the remake will revolve around two men who are embroiled in the murder of a woman, starring top South Korean actors Kim Soo-hyun and Cha Seung-won.

Moreover, "Money Heist," a hit Netflix original made in Spain, will be also remade in South Korea.  The local version of the series will feature a group of a genius and thieves who team up to carry out a heist on the Korean Peninsula.  BH Entertainment and Zium Content will take charge of the reproduction, along with director Kim Hong-sun, who has created crime series like "The Guest" (2018) and "Voice" (2017). A detailed cast will be released later.

Last year, the Korean melodrama, "The World of the Married" (2020), based on the BBC One TV series "Doctor Foster," gained huge popularity at home and abroad.  It set a record high viewership of nearly 28.4 percent for a cable drama last year, while it was listed on popular TV shows in several Asian countries after being released on Netflix in July.

Experts noted that the recent increase in remakes of Western hit shows represents the expanded marketing strategy of the Korean entertainment scene.

"As global streaming services like Netflix have emerged as mainstream media, Korea-made content now has a bigger market beyond Asia," culture critic Kim Heon-shik said. "In the past, TV series are watched only by Korean viewers. But now, they have potential clients all over the world."

For the past decades, South Korean broadcasters have preferred Korean adaptations of Japanese original TV series, including the romantic comedies "Boys Over Flowers" (2009) and "He Who Can't Marry" (2009).  But in recent years, a growing number of Western TV series have been remade in Korea, such as ABC's "Designated Survivor," CBS' "The Good Wife" and BBC One's "Life on Mars."

"Full-fledged Korean TV shows and films have established a strong foothold in the global entertainment scene thanks to recent hits like 'Sweet Home,'" said the expert, referring to the horror show ranking third on Netflix's most-watched TV show list in its first week.

"Korea-made content is very bankable in the world, and it is also easier for producers and platform operators to promote their shows based on European or American hits to the global viewers," he said.

“Night in Paradise” by director Park Hoon-jung is set to be released on Netflix on April 9.

In announcing the release date Tuesday, Netflix said the film would be available to stream in 190 countries.

Starring actors Eom Tae-goo, Cha Seung-won and Jeon Yeo-been, the film depicts a story of a man who becomes a target of an organized crime group and a woman who sees no hope in life. Actor Lee Ki-young and Park Ho-san also star in Park’s new crime film.

“Night in Paradise” premiered at the 77th Venice International Film Festival.

It was the only Korean film that was invited to the Italian film festival last year.

Park is known for writing and directing Korean-style crime films. He made his directorial debut with “The Showdown” in 2010 and wrote the script for the thriller film “I Saw the Devil” (2010) and the crime drama “The Unjust” (2010).

In 2015, Park’s action-noir “New World” and drama flick “The Tiger” were huge hits in Korea. Park also directed “The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion” in 2018 and is preparing to direct the film’s sequel.

Recently, Korean movies including the thriller “The Call” directed by Lee Chung-hyun “Time to Hunt” by director Yoon Sung-hyun and “Space Sweepers” by director Jo Sung-hee skipped their theatrical releases and went straight to Netflix.

Tae-gu, who had no choice but to flee to Jeju Island on the verge of taking the last stance to save his life, meets Jae-Yeon who seems to have her own story to tell. The following scene shows Chief Ma’s brutal appearance whose goal is to ‘settle the bill’ by punishing Tae-gu. Ironically, the sharp emotions exchanged between the three main characters are portrayed in the beautiful scenery of Jeju Island, revealing the dark clouds of fate in front of Tae-gu.

Night in Paradise will release globally on April 9, 2021, only on Netflix.

'Night in Paradise' offers rare glimpses of tranquility amid bloody gang war

Writer-director Park Hoon-jung's new film, "Night in Paradise," is a noir-themed crime thriller that deviates from conventional gangster movies. It places a superheroine at the forefront and offers rare glimpses of tranquility amid a bloody gang war.

Park, whose screenwriting credits include "I Saw the Devil" (2010) and "The Unjust" (2010), previously directed the gangland crime drama "New World" (2013) and the female-centered heroine franchise film "The Witch: Park 1. The Subversion" (2018).

The film revolves around a mobster named Tae-goo (Um Tae-goo) who is being chased by organized crime gangs. He flees to Jeju Island and meets Jae-yeon (Jeon Yeo-been), a mysterious woman with impressive sharpshooting skills, but who is suffering from a terminal illness. Cha Seoung-won plays gang chief Ma, who is intimidating but funny.

Park said he chose to set the film in Jeju because he wanted to spotlight its natural beauty, yet draw the picture of a tragic story on the island.

"One day, the cinematographer sent me a photo of a palm tree in the moonlight swaying in the strong wind. That was exactly the image I had about the film. I wanted it to be beautiful but sad. When I see something beautiful, I feel painfully sad and ask myself, 'When will I be able to see this again?' I hope the audience feels the irony coming from the background and the story," he said during a recent press conference for the film.

"Night in Paradise" was the only Korean film to be invited to the 77th Venice International Film Festival's out-of-competition section. On being touted as, "One of best gangster movies coming from South Korean cinema in recent years," by festival director Alberto Barbera, Park said, "I thought I must have done something good in a past life. I was very lucky."

Cha said he is proud to have been invited to Venice, saying, "It's a pity that we couldn't physically make it to the festival. It would have been really nice to walk the red carpet and engage with film enthusiasts."

Um said that he took the role because he wanted to work with director Park. He gained 9 kilograms to play the troubled Tae-goo in "Night in Paradise," and to perform the brutal, bloody action scenes.

"Most of all, it was interesting to play a character with the same name as me. I asked director Park later if he took it from my name, but his answer was 'no,'" he laughed.

"I personally don't like doing action sequences because it's painful. However, my preference doesn't necessarily affect my film choice. I loved the script and have always wanted to work with Park. Thanks to the amazing stunt team, I was able to shoot action scenes safely," he said.

Jeon, who instantly rose to stardom with "After My Death" (2018) and is currently starring in the hit tvN drama series "Vincenzo" alongside Song Joong-ki, talked about how "Night in Paradise" differs from other conventional noir-themed films as well as her relationship with Um on set.

"I've always admired Hong Kong noir films, and from an early age, I've wanted to be in those films. Unlike other noir-themed films, in which female characters are marginalized, Jae-yeon takes the center stage in 'Night in Paradise,'" she said.

The 32-year-old actress said she became close friends with Um. "We became very good friends thanks to director Park, who frequently took us out for lunch and dinner. We realized that we have similar attitude toward acting," she said.

"Night in Paradise" will be available on Netflix starting on April 9.

(Movie Review) 'Night in Paradise': Stylish but cliched blood-splattered crime thriller

By Kim Boram | April 06, 2021

SEOUL, April 6 (Yonhap) -- "Night in Paradise," which was invited to the official non-competition section of the Venice film festival last year, is director Park Hoon-jung's return project after the mystery action film "The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion" (2018).

Park, known as an expert in stylish-looking blood-and-mob gangster films in Korea, made his name as a screenplay writer of Kim Jee-woon's hit crime thriller "I Saw the Devil" (2010) and Ryoo Seung-wan's award-winning crime movie "The Unjust" (2010). Then, he started his directorial career with "The Showdown" (2011) and made the smash-hit crime action movie "New World" (2012).

His sixth feature, "Night in Paradise," starts with scenes in which Tae-gu (Eom Tae-goo), the taciturn, deadpan top dog for a big-name gang organization led by Mr. Yang (Park Ho-san), meets his sister and niece, who is delighted with Tae-gu's birthday present.

On their way back home, the two are killed in a severe car accident, which is ostensibly arranged by the opposite gang, Buksung, to provoke Tae-gu, who keeps refusing to join the group.

In a revenge hit, Tae-gu executes a round of stabbing in a sauna, where the head of Buksung Gang and other key members are killed or injured.

As Tae-gu has a price on his head, he flees to the southern resort island of Jeju, before moving to Russia, and stays with an arms dealer and his laconic and pallid niece Jae-yeon (Jeon Yeo-been), suffering a fatal illness.

From this point, the story gets some predictable tweaks that most gangster movies go through: treachery, romance and revenge.

A timely decent array of exciting action scenes and bloodshed, including a car chase on Jeju Island and violent sequences in which Tae-gu fends off a string of gangsters inside a car, accelerate the dynamics in director Park's latest crime thriller.

The actors each play their role in creating their own characters and adding plausibility to the blood-splattered linear plot.

Eom Tae-goo's husky voice and grim and stern eyes fit with the lonesome gangster of Tae-gu, who has to face an inexorable fate after losing his family and dealing with revengeful spirits. Despite his killing spree, he creates a sympathetic onscreen atmosphere that he is doing everything right.

The No. 2 of Buksang Gang, Chief Ma, is a scene-stealing character in "Night in Paradise." Veteran actor Cha Seoung-won creates a prototypical but favorite gang lord, a slicked-haired, sarcastic and arrogant gangster who pretends to be reasonable and fair.

Jeon Yeo-been, who took her first lead role in the mystery drama film "After My Death" (2018), deserves to lead the relentless climax of the film in the last 10 minutes.

However, the mixture of noir, action and romance seems untidy and awkward. The 131-minute film spends most of its running time building up the bond between Tae-gu and Jae-yeon and presenting the reason for the 10-minute climax.

Consequently, it is too slow or narrative to convince the audience, who expect director Park's fast-forward shooting and knifing scenes in "New World" or who want the stylish revival of the female character-led revenge mystery in "The Witch."

"Night in Paradise" will be released on Netflix on Friday.

[Film review] “Night in Paradise” explores human connection in backdrop of gang violence

April 7, 2021

Park Hoon-jung’s new noir film is going to premiere on Netflix Friday

Jeju Island is like a paradise, peaceful and beautiful. When night falls on that paradise, it arrives in a deep shade of blue.  Choi Sung-won of the group Deulgukhwa may have sung a romantic song about the “Blue Night on Jeju Island,” but for some people, the nights on this idyllic island are something sad and painful.

“Night in Paradise,” the new film by director Park Hoon-jung, is a beautiful yet sad noir work scheduled to arrive on Netflix Friday.  Tae-gu (played by Uhm Tae-goo) is a hotshot member of a criminal gang whose sister and nephew are killed in a suspicious car accident. Sensing that the rival Buksung gang is behind the deaths, he risks everything to avenge them.  As he prepares to travel to Vladivostok in secret to complete his mission, he hides out briefly on Jeju Island, where Jae-yeon (Jeon Yeo-been) lives together with her illegal weapons dealer uncle.  Jae-yeon is tasked with picking Tae-gu up from the airport instead of her uncle. The organization has asked the uncle to conceal him. The first meeting between Tae-gu and Jae-yeon takes place in awkward silence.

“New World” (2013) is considered Park Hoon-jung’s most prominent work to date. That movie was about the human connection that forms between an undercover police officer infiltrating a criminal syndicate (Lee Jung-jae) and one of its mid-level bosses (Hwang Jung-min), as well as the dynamics that operate within the organization.  It drew more than four million viewers to theaters and was regarded as a modern classic of Korean noir.

“Night in Paradise” is similar in the sense of the rapport between two main characters forming an undercurrent that runs throughout the film.  But while “New World” focused on the unpredictable developments in its storyline, “Night in Paradise” puts more emphasis on human emotions and the lyricism of its backdrop. The story structure functions as more or less a minimal element to generate that sense of atmosphere.

Tae-gu and Jae-yeon have something in common: both of them have been driven to the edge after losing beloved family members. When an incident suddenly befalls Jae-yeon’s uncle, the two of them go on the run.  In images that call to mind a romantic road movie, the two of them drive their car along Jeju’s mountain roads, surrounded by lush forests of trees with their branches outstretched, or ride together on a motorcycle along the beach with the sunset in the distance.  As enjoying a meal of raw seafood soup — a seaside favorite — they dip their feet in the water and enjoy a cigarette in a moment that evokes the calm before the storm. It’s even more beautiful and heartbreaking because it is all about to disappear.

spacer.png

A still from “Night in Paradise” (provided by Netflix)

In the second half of the film, the mood takes a sharp turn as Chief Ma (Cha Seung-won), the number-two figure in the Buksung gang, arrives on Jeju. The momentary peace vanishes and the ensuing scenes are filled with tense pursuits and intense brawling. The lyrical music takes on a faster rhythm, and the deep blue shades that had dominated the film are overlaid with the deepening red hues of bloodshed.

When the final battle arrives, it is dry and chilly rather than heated — an action sequence that evokes a sense of bleakness instead of exhilaration.

Chief Ma is a powerful presence, someone who handles difficult business coolly and without hesitation even when he resents having to do it. It’s a quiet film, but his dialogue infuses it with a certain energy — appropriately harsh and weighty, but with an unexpected element of humor.

Chief Ma appears likely to go down as one of actor Cha Seung-won’s defining roles. When the film was invited last September for an out-of-competition screening at the Venice International Film Festival, the foreign press lauded the character as the “most striking.”

Explaining the reason for the invitation, the festival’s artistic director Alberto Barbera said that “Night in Paradise” was “one of the most outstanding gangster films to appear in Korean film during the past few years.”

He also predicted that the name of director Park Hoon-jung would become “much more widely recognized in the future.”

A theatrical release had been planned for the film, but the decision was finally made to release it on Netflix as the COVID-19 pandemic persisted.

“It’s a different kind of tension and excitement [from a domestic premiere] to think that so many people in so many different countries will be seeing it all at once,” said Park ahead of the film’s release in over 190 countries.

“I’m also curious to see how foreign viewers respond to a film that was tailored to the sentiments of Korean viewers,” he added.

Coupang beefs up investments in OTT, adding educational and original content

By Lee Gyu-lee | 2021–04-13

Korea's E-commerce company Coupang raised $4.55 billion in public offering in the U.S stock market on March 11. Yonhap

The E-commerce company Coupang is making aggressive investments in its streaming service, Coupang Play, to step up its game in the competitive over-the-top (OTT) market in Korea, following its successful stock market debut in the U.S that raised $4.55 billion.

The company announced Monday, its plans to partner with popular educational publishers to build on its streaming service's content to specialize in education, targeting a wider age range of users.

"We hope more users will find Coupang Play useful as it will expand its educational content that can be enjoyed by both parents and their children," the company said.

Launched in December last year, Coupang Play has been offered free of charge to subscribers of its premium service WOW that offers free, overnight shipping.

"We are strengthening our educational content as a means to provide more meaningful experiences to Coupang's WOW subscribers," Kim Sung-han, the head of Coupang Play, said in a statement. "We plan to continue adding more content to meet the various needs of our users."

The platform officially launched an education section Friday and will be releasing learning content such as English-language and test prep materials from top-tier English-learning publications including Hackers, YBM, and the BBC.

The service will also offer exclusive learning videos among OTT services, including the "Scholastic Phonics Readers" series and digital textbook platform i-Scream's video materials.

The recent addition is seen as the company's attempt to gain a foothold in the heated competition in Korea's streaming services market.

Coupang Play is also gearing up to release original series. It reportedly partnered up with Chorokbaem Media, the production company behind the hit series "My Mister" and "The Penthouse: War in Life," to release the upcoming series "That Night" (direct translation).

Directed by Lee Myung-woo, the series has been garnering huge anticipation among K-drama fans as it stars A-list actors Kim Soo-hyun and Cha Seung-won. It is the Korean remake of the BBC's crime thriller series "Criminal Justice."

Korea's OTT media market, dominated by the global streaming service Netflix, is expected to become even more competitive with additional players ― U.S media giants Disney+ and Apple TV ― expected to land in the country in the not-too-distant future.

Local streaming services are also attempting to boost their content in response.

KT, which owns digital streaming services Seezn and olleh tv, announced plans to acquire licenses for over 1,000 content items and produce over 100 original series by 2023. CJ ENM, which co-runs TVING with the local JTBC network, is planning on spending 400 billion won ($355 million) on content, while KakaoTV is looking to make about 240 original series with a 300 billion won ($266 million) investment by the same year.

Broadcasters KBS, MBC, and SBS's co-OTT operation with SK Telecom, Wavve, also announced a 1 trillion won in investment plans to release original series by 2025.

[Herald Interview] Eom Tae-goo curious about global audience’s response to ‘Night in Paradise’

By Song Seung-hyun | Apr 15, 2021

Many local movies since last year have decided to skip theaters to release on Netflix due to the spread of COVID-19, which has kept moviegoers away from theaters.

“Night in Paradise”also took this path, being released in 190 countries through Netflix on April 9.

Five days after its release, lead actor Eom Tae-goo said he is curious about the response from global viewers, during a joint media interview held via Zoom on Wednesday.

Spoiler

“To me, it is amazing that the movie is being simultaneously released in multiple different countries,” Eom told local reporters. “Our movie has deep Korean cultural sentiment, as it was created by Koreans. I hope our way of depicting desperate emotions and loneliness can be delivered properly to foreign viewers.”

“Night in Paradise,” directed by Park Hoon-jung, premiered at the 77th Venice International Film Festival last year. The film tells the story of Park Tae-goo (Eom), a crime syndicate member, who flees to Jeju Island after he becomes a target of another organized crime group. On the island, he meets Jae-yeon (Jeon Yeo-bin), who is always cynical because she sees no hope in life.

“All of director Park’s movies are memorable to me. But I was especially shocked when I watched ‘New World’ and ‘The Witch: Part 1 -- The Subversion,’” Eom said.

Eom added that he feels that "Night in Paradise" is different from Park’s previous films.

“It has the structure of a Korean-style crime film but there is Jae-yeon, which is a new character that has not been seen often in Korean-style crime films and brings this fresh mood. This is also the reason that I wanted to work with director Park.”

Although Eom is usually an introvert in real life, the actor said it was not difficult to perform a charismatic character that is a key member of an organized crime group.

“I think I have several different sides to my personality,” he said. “When I am filming, I bring out different personalities freely. The shooting site for me is like a playground so I feel free to expose them.”

Eom also gained 9 kilograms to look more like a typical gangster.

“The director asked me to gain weight but said to try not to look like I have trained at the gym. I worked on it for two months,” he said.

During the interview, the actor also talked about his co-star Jeon Yeo-bin, who recently rose to stardom in popular Korean TV series “Vincenzo,” and veteran actor Cha Seung-won.

“My first scene with Jeon Yeo-bin was most memorable. It was the scene in which she uses guns,” he said. “She did not scream and exaggerate. But in her blank face, I could feel the character’s sorrow. She is a good actor.”

While Jeon was a great partner, Eom said Cha was more of an actor he could look up to.

“Just being able to perform with him was an honor,” Eom said. “When we were monitoring what we had filmed, his acting made the staff go quiet and all of a sudden start laughing out loud. I think I can never be as charismatic as him.”

When asked what is paradise, Eom said it is a moment that makes him feel happy.

“For me, paradise is not a certain location. It is rather a brief moment,” he said. “I am in paradise when I get in the car after a difficult scene. That moment when I finally feel relieved. That is a short moment. I soon think about what I have to work on the next day, but that moment is paradise to me.“

The new mystery thriller series, "One Ordinary Day," featuring Kim Soo-hyun and Cha Seoung-won, will be exclusively available for streaming on Coupang Play, the local streamer said on Sunday.

"As our first exclusive content offering, we will present a high quality series to paid membership users," a Coupang Play official said in a statement. In December, e-commerce firm Coupang launched the video streaming service to compete with global and local streamers such as Netflix, Wavve and Watcha Play.

A remake of BBC's "Criminal Justice," the 8-episode series revolves around a young man who is accused of murder, though he is unable to remember committing the crime.

Kim plays a college student named Hyun-soo whose life turns upside down after being accused of murder, while Cha stars as a lawyer named Joong-han, who offers help to Hyun-soo.

Director Lee Myung-woo, whose previous works include SBS's "The Fiery Priest" (2019) and "Backstreet Rookie" (2020), will helm the series with the script written by Kwon Soon-gyu, who is behind SBS's "Warrior Baek Dong-soo" (2011) and "Jackpot" (2016).

Coupang to create original drama series

Park Sae-jin Reporter(swatchsjp@ajunews.com) | April 26, 2021

SEOUL -- South Korea's ecommerce giant Coupang has partnered with a major domestic media content company to create an original drama series featuring popular actors Kim Soo-hyun and Cha Seung-won. The drama series titled "Some Day" is a remake of a 2008 British drama series "Criminal Justice."

Coupang, known as the South Korean counterpart of Amazon, aims to expand its presence in the country's competitive over-the-top (OTT) market dominated by Netflix, the world's top OTT service operator which has 3.8 million subscribed users in South Korea as of February 2021.

Coupang made a foray into South Korea's OTT market in December 2020 by releasing its OTT service "Coupang Play." Instead of trying hard to attract consumers that are already using other similar OTT services that cost more than 10,000 won ($9) per month, the online shopping mall operator targeted its 4.7 million premium service users who pay a monthly subscription of 2,900 won for extra fast delivery. Coupang's premium service users are given free access to Coupang Play.

The ecommerce giant said in a statement on April 26 that the company partnered with Chorokbaem Media to create an original drama series starring top K-drama actors Kim Soo-hyun and Cha Seung-won. The remake of the world-famous drama series will hit Coupang Play in November 2021.

"We will continue to offer differentiated services through Coupang Play to spice up our customers' everyday lives," Coupang Play head Kim Sung-han said, adding that the upcoming drama series will be created in the highest quality format to satisfy premium subscription users.

In January, Coupang signed supply contracts with two South Korean entertainment media content companies New Entertainment World (NEW) and Showbox. NEW and Showbox started servicing some 75 films including hit zombie-action thriller films "Train to Busan" and "Peninsula" through Coupang Play.

Kim Soo-hyun X Cha Seung-won ‘One Day’, Lee Seol - Yang Kyung-won - Kim Shin-rok - Kim Hong-pa Confirm Appearances…Strong Lineup

Actors Lee Seol, Yang Kyung-won, Kim Shin-rok, and Kim Hong-pa have finally confirmed their appearance in Coupang Play's first exclusive content 'One Day', completing an impossible 'strong lineup'.

Coupang Play's first exclusive content, 'One Day' (Screenwriter Kwon Soon-gyu/Director Lee Myung-woo/Producer The Studio M, Green Snake Media, Gold Medalist), to be released in November, is a public perspective through the fierce story of two men surrounding the murder of a woman. It is an 8-episode drama that explores the criminal justice system. In particular, 'One Day' is receiving a lot of attention because of the collaboration of Korea's best actors, Kim Soo-hyun and Cha Seung-won, who need no explanation.

In this regard, Lee Seol-Yang Kyung-Won, Kim Shin-Rok, and Kim Hong-Pa are building a 'super-strong well-made lineup' that cannot be seen anywhere else, raising expectations. Lee Seol-Yang Kyung-Won, Kim Shin-Rok, and Kim Hong-Pa are expected to heighten the extreme immersion with an irreplaceable presence that portrays each character with a passionate performance.

First of all, Lee Seol, who received favorable reviews for her acting skills in ‘Bad Detective’ and ‘When the Devil Calls Your Name’ takes on the role of Seo Su-jin, a freshly hired young chick lawyer. Attention is focused on Lee Seol's acting transformation as to what kind of relationship Seo Su-jin, who is united with humanism, will become entangled with Kim Hyeon-soo (Kim Su-hyeon) and Shin Jung-han (Cha Seung-won).

Yang Kyung-won, who showed a strong personality in 'Crash Landing on You', 'Arthdal Chronicle', and 'Vincenzo' with solid acting skills that has been on the theater stage for a long time, plays the role of Park Doo-shik, who deliberately crashed into prison to be loyal to the boss. appears. Yang Kyung-won, who has detailed acting skills ranging from comics to life acting and charisma, is expected to renew his life again with the character Park Doo-shik that will be drawn in 'One Day'.

Kim Shin-rok, who made a strong impression on the public with his intense acting as the head of the homicide team in the drama 'Monster', will play the role of Ahn Tae-hee, an elite prosecutor who is a gold spoon, graduated from a prestigious high school, and passed Seoul National University law school and bar exam. Although she is a prosecutor with a 100% win rate who has never lost a trial yet, expectations are rising as to what kind of filmography Kim Shin-rok will create through the role of Ahn Tae-hee, who suffers from failure every time in her promotion to the chief prosecutor.

From dramas such as 'Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim 1 and 2', 'Whisper', and 'Aide 1 and 2' to movies such as 'Seobok', 'Astronomy: Ask the Sky', 'Duke', and 'Malmoi' Kim Hong-pa, who has shown a wide range of acting that does not discriminate, transforms into Park Sang-beom, the head of the detective department with 32 years of experience, whose job and daily life is to catch a violent criminal by looking at the body. Ahead of his retirement, he takes on the case of Kim Hyeon-soo (Kim Soo-hyun) and finds himself in an unexpected situation while investigating the case, adding tension to the play.

The production team said, "Lee Seol-Yang Kyung-Won-Kim Shin-Rok-Kim Hong-Pa are actors you can trust and see, who show a unique presence." "Lee Seol-Yang Kyung-Won-Kim Shin-Rok-, who will prove 100% perfect character digestion based on solid acting skills. Please look forward to Kim Hong-pa’s hot performances.”

Meanwhile, Coupang Play's first exclusive content 'One Day' will be released through Coupang Play in November.

4 Blockbusters Slated for Release This Summer

June 16, 2021

The blockbusters slated for release into socially distanced movie theaters this summer are either action flicks or disaster movies.

"Mogadishu" depicts the harrowing escape from Somalia by Korean Embassy staff when civil war broke out there in the 1990s. The action film starring Kim Yoon-seok and Zo In-sung cost W20 billion (US$1=W1,118).

"Sinkhole" is true to its title and stars Cha Seung-won and Kim Sung-kyun, while in "Hostage," Hwang Jung-min plays a version of himself who is secretly abducted in Seoul and risks his life to escape.

The movies are expected to hit theaters between July and August, although exact dates have yet to be set.

The most promising foreign blockbuster is "Black Widow" starring Scarlett Johansson, yet another installment in the interminable Avengers series, which hits theaters on July 7.

Last year, only three Korean blockbusters hit theaters and drew 1.8 million to 4.35 million viewers despite the coronavirus pandemic. But so far this year no Korean film has attracted more than 500,000 moviegoers, though there are hopes that this summer's big movies will draw more people as vaccination is picking up.

Cinema operators to give ticket revenues to distributors of ‘Escape from Mogadishu,’ ‘Sinkhole’

The Korean Theater Association, which includes the top three local multiplex operators -- CGV, Lotte Cinema, Megabox -- among its members, has thrown a lifeline to two film distributors to encourage the release of their high-budget movies, “Escape from Mogadishu” and “Sinkhole,” it announced on Tuesday.

Instead of splitting the ticket sales 50:50 between theaters and film distributors as is the practice, the theaters will forgo ticket sales proceeds until the amount reaches 50 percent of the two films’ total production cost. Lotte Entertainment is the distributor for “Escape from Mogadishu,” while Showbox is the distributor for “Sinkhole.”

The decision came after the Korean Theater Association and local distributors held several meetings that were organized by the Korean Film Council. At the meetings, local distributors had asked for a minimum safety net.

In 2020, the number of people who visited local theaters plunged 74 percent from the year before, which is the lowest since the Korean Film Council started compiling box office data in 2004.

To shore up the film industry, local theaters gave distributors 1,000 won in subsidies per audience member between February and March this year. However, the measure was not able to spur release of large-scale films, which they had hoped would attract more moviegoers.

Meanwhile, the Korea IPTV Broadcasting Association, which includes telecom carriers KT, SK Broadband and LG U+ as its members, and cable operator Home Choice also agreed to provide 80 percent of sales revenue from movies released on their services to the two distributors. It is around 20 percentage points higher than the current distribution rate.

The theater association and IPTV operators also added that they will further support other local distributors as well through diverse marketing strategies.

The action film “Escape from Mogadishu,” starring Kim Yoon-seok and Jo In-sung, is directed by star director Ryoo Seung-wan, who directed multiple hit films like “The Berlin File,” “The Unjust” and “Veteran.” The film is based on the true story of diplomats in South and North Korean missions in Somalia during the 1991 civil war.

The comedy film “Sinkhole” directed by Kim Ji-hoon is a film about an unexpected sinkhole appearing in Chungwoon Villa, a cheap apartment building. Popular actors such as Cha Seung-won, Kim Sung-kyun and Lee Kwang-soo appear in the film as victims of the sinkhole.

While both movies are set to be released this summer, the exact dates of their release have yet to be announced.
