Grevin wax museum opens in Seoul

Ban Ki-moon, Barack Obama, Xi Jinping, Tom Cruise, Angelina Jolie, Bae Yong-joon and Kim Yu-na. These are all people you can meet in a day if you visit a particular location in Seoul.

The Grevin Museum, a French wax museum with a 133-year history, opened Thursday in Jung-gu, in the heart of Seoul. It is the museum's first Asian branch.

"As hallyu, the Korean wave, is spreading across Asia, we decided to come to Seoul," said Dominique Marcel, CEO of Compagnie des Alpes, which owns the museum. "When we select a city to open a museum, we estimate the potential of the city _ the potential to attract tourists.

"Seoul is strong with cultural content, from movies and music to cosmetics. Seoul is becoming an important destination."

There also are Grevin museums in Paris, Montreal and Prague ― all run by Compagnie des Alpes. The first opened in Paris in 1882.

When entering the Seoul museum, visitors will be guided to the fourth floor where hallyu stars such as Jang Dong-gun, Bae Yong-joon, Kwon Sang-woo and Ahn Jae-wook will greet them in the first room, themed "red carpet."

Inside the four-story building, there are 14 exhibition halls with different themes -- such as "geniuses of the century," "presidential aircraft" and "beauty salon" -- and eight interactive rooms where visitors can participate in activities from roulette to motor racing.

In the themed rooms, people related to the theme are exhibited. For instance, in the "genius" room, there are Steve Jobs and Albert Einstein; and in the "presidential aircraft" room, built like the inside of a real airplane in collaboration with Asiana Airlines, you will find United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Chinese President Xi Jinping, United States President Barack Obama and Queen Elizabeth II on board. In the "beauty salon," Audrey Hepburn, Paris Hilton and Princess Diana are busy dressing up.

Near the end of the exhibition, there is the "Discovery Atelier" where visitors learn of the wax-figure production process and can experience making their own figures through three-dimensional scanning.

The museum features 80 life-size wax figures of celebrities and influencers, 30 of which are of Koreans. The museum plans to add four to five models a year as it does at the other museums. It takes six months to produce each wax figure.

When asked what the selection process was for the Korean models, Kim Yong-gwan, president of Grevin Korea, said it was based on historical importance.

"We chose iconic people who became the 'first Korean' to rise to international fame in a certain field and proudly represent the nation," he said.

Of all the wax museums, Grevin Seoul features the largest number of Korean celebrities.

The museum is near the City Hall. Tickets cost 23,000 won for adults, 18,000 won for teenagers and 15,000 won for children. For more information, call 02-777-4700.

Actor Jang Dong-gun will return to the silver screen with “A Night of Seven Years,” his management company SM C&C said Thursday.

Based on the eponymous novel by author Jeong You-jeong, the tragic thriller revolves around two men: one who, by a wicked turn of events, strangles an innocent girl and spends the subsequent seven years consumed with guilt, and the dead girl’s father, who plots to take revenge by taking the life of the murderer’s son.

Actor Ryu Seung-ryong will play the role of the murderer while Jang will act the part of the vengeful father.

Jang Dong-gun joins revenge film opposite Ryu Seung-ryong

Read more on Dramabeans

Hi irilight, thanks for sharing this great news. Finally.................he's back on the screen, the big screen that is!  The story is quite dark. The film sounds scary. I hope the title, “Seven Years of Nightmare” is the confirmed title because it's easy on the ear, I like it! I just do not like the idea about offspring needs to pay for the sins of their father. I'm happy that he's gonna come back on the screen again. Not much a fan of Ryu but that man is an entirely great actor. And I prefer JDG to do a drama but this is fine, anyway. Can't wait! :P

Jang Dong Gun Tops the Korean Ladies Pick of 10 Most Handsome K-actors

nuguan1.jpg

It’s the ladies turn to voice their preferences and this top-10 list has quite a few overlaps with the recently released male audience picks. There is a wee distinction, which was likely used in asking the question, as the men were asked which male actor they found the coolest/manliest, while the women were asked which male actor they found the most handsome. While more rugged looking Ha Jung Woo topped the men’s choice poll, it’s original flower boy Jang Dong Gun that the ladies find the number 1 most handsome actor in Korea. Still.

Jang Dong-gun and Ryoo Seung-ryong, Father to Father

photo631327.jpg

Actor Jang Dong-gun is going through another change.

This time Jang Dong-gun is coming back with a movie called "7 Years of Nights", a humanism drama and thriller.

Jang Dong-gun thought hard about the movie "No Tears for the Dead" last year. However, a source claims that Jang Dong-gun was attracted to "7 Years of Nights" amongst the other offers that he got.

For Jang Dong-gun who releases at least 1 or 2 movies a year, this attempt is slightly special. The character he plays is a heavy one and it's not that simple. It's also based on a best seller so attention falls on how Jang Dong-gun will express this character.

Jang Dong-gun becomes the father of a lost daughter. He plans a revenge for 7 years to make his daughter's killer and his son suffer the same pain he did.

The keyword here is 'fatherly love'. Jang Dong-gun has played various roles during his acting career but being a father is a first. In reality, he's a father of two children.

His co-star is Ryoo Seung-ryong. These two different characters chase each other as father to father.

"7 Years of Nights" starts filming in Jeju Island at the end of the month.

School-aged Pictures of Popular Hallyu K-actors Show the Before and After

For years I’ve been seeing these types of pre-star pictures floating around here and there, and finally decided to collect as many as I can into one post. Half of it is for my own viewing lulz and the other half is to share since so many folks like one or more of these K-actors. This collection of school-aged pictures of past, present, and future Hallyu stars convince me that styling is a big reason why guys went from not to hot, that and also losing weight and/or plastic surgery.

Celebrity couple Jang Dong-gun and Ko So-young recently donated 100 million won ($86,095) to go toward helping single mothers and babies to be put up for adoption.

The Social Welfare Society said on Thursday that Jang and Ko paid a visit Monday to the headquarters of the charity, located in Nonhyeon-dong, southern Seoul.

“I’m very concerned about the way people and our society perceive single mothers and their children. I want to see changes so that single mothers can live without feeling like they have to give up their children,” Ko was quoted as saying.

The couple have donated to the Social Welfare Society since 2010.
Ko also volunteers with her fans at children’s shelters.

The pair wed in 2010 and had their first child the same year. Afterward, Ko told multiple local media outlets that motherhood had prompted her interest in the welfare of children and single mothers.

The actress gave birth to her second child last year and is reportedly reviewing scripts in preparation to return to the silver screen next year.

Jang and Ko both began acting in 1992, soaring to stardom upon their debut.

They first met on the set of the 1998 film “Love Wind Love Song” and remained friends for more than 10 years before they started dating in 2007.

Asiana short film festival to open next month

SEOUL, Oct. 13 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's largest annual short film festival will open in Seoul next month with 59 titles from 31 countries up for competition, organizers said Tuesday.

The 13th edition of the Asiana International Short Film Festival is scheduled to take place at Cine Cube and Art Nine, both art theaters in Seoul on Nov. 5-10.

The 59 films break down to 48 for international competition and 11 for domestic competition sections. They were chosen from 4,418 and 863 entries, the largest numbers for both categories, according to the organizers.

This year saw more "fresh films from such genres as documentary and animation" despite the conventional strength of film dramas, Korean actor Ahn Sung-ki, executive director of the festival, said during a news conference here.

Three films were chosen to open the event -- "Blood Brothers," an experimental documentary film from Portugal, "Instructions for Use," a film drama of Italy-Britain co-production, and "A Single Life," an animated film from the Netherlands. The winner of the international competition category will close the festival.

Ji Se-yeon, executive programmer of the festival, said that the three films, all no longer than seven minutes, are considered to best represent the attractions of short films.

"We selected them on an experimental basis to have guests coming to the opening ceremony feel that way," she said.

Kang Je-gyu, director of the Korean blockbusters "Swiri" (1999) and "Taegukgi" (2004), will lead the five-member jury. Korean actors Jang Dong-gun and Lee Hak-ju will work as special jury members to choose the best actor or actress among those in the finalists of the Korean competition section.

"I'm nervous because this is my first time to be a jury member but I'm also excited to meet new films," Jang said. "I'll watch carefully to find an actor who's moving my mind."

The festival also prepared five special programs for screening a total of 25 films recognized in international film festivals such as Cannes or the Short Shorts Film Festival, Japan's largest short film festival, or the latest from world-acclaimed directors.
