Hallyu's four kings set to stir Japan

2009111611460203505_1.jpgThe Four Great Kings of Hallyu: top Korean actors Lee Byung-hun, Jang Dong-gun, Song Seung-hun and Won

Bin (from left) are set to gather at Tokyo Dome. [10Asia]

Will there be another miracle at Tokyo Dome, a place that was heated up by the presence of Yonsama near the end of September? After the news broke out that a mega-scale Hallyu event "Here Comes A Miracle: Hallyu's Four Cards - FOUR OF A KIND" was going to be held on December 17, with stars Lee Byung-hun, Jang Dong-gun, Song Seung-hun and Won Bin, people are wondering how huge of a crowd the event will succeed in attracting. The event -- to be held twice (at 12:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.) on November 17 -- will be directed by Japan's famous producer and lyricist Akimoto Yasushi with Korean filmmaker Heo Jin-ho in charge of the cinematography. Akioto Yasushi is currently the producer of AKB48, Japan's top girl band of the moment, but he was more famous as the producer of 1980s female idol group Onyanko Club, one of whose members, Kudo Shizuka, became the wife of Kimura Takuya. He has a good reputation among Hallyu fans in Japan, after directing Lee's fan meeting in 2005 at Tokyo Dome and producing all of the actors events in Japan ever since.

The Akimoto-Heo duo is planning a "dramatic reading" at the event, which producer Akimoto described as "a reading of a movie, which will be read and acted out by four actors on stage in accordance with Heo's cinematography. Placing four of Korea's top actors on one stage is nothing short of a miracle. I am also looking forward to this once in a lifetime performance by them." This could be seen as a fresh approach to wipe out the common consensus that "Hallyu events are expensive but do not contain much to see."

The fans are showing tremendous reaction to the news. With each celebrity being huge Hallyu stars, the local fans could not believe all four would appear at a single event and even doubted the authenticity of the news. But some of the fans are complaining about the high ticket price of JPY 15,800 yen. There are even negative comments on the website not only about the ticket price but also about the four stars attending the same event. One fan wrote, "It feels they're putting steak, eel, sushi and seafood soup all on one table. Truthfully, it's overwhelming" while another wrote "Wouldn't it be better to have a separate event, each star per event?" But with the full-throttle publicity by the event's host TBS, ticket reservations have started on November 2 at convenience store around the country and general ticket sales are set to kick of on November 28.

Won Bin, left, in "Mother" and Jang Dong-gun in "Good Morning President"

Amidst all these happenings, two of the "Hallyu Four Cards" Won Bin and Jang Dong-gun are meeting fans with new movies prior to the event. Won Bin visited Japan on November 27 to attend the premiere screening for the film "Mother", which opened in Japan. First Lady Miyuki, wife of Prime Minister Hatoyama and an avid Hallyu fan, attended the event and tickets were sold out in two minutes. Won Bin graced the covered of weekly entertainment magazine "Pia" during the Tokyo Film Festival in October, and Japanese media covered Won's first visit in five years after he served his Korea's military duties.

On another note, the Korean Film Council will be hosting "Korean Film Showcase 2009" at the Yurakucho Subaruza Theater from November 21 thru November 30. A total of ten Korean movies will be shown at the showcase, including Jang Dong-gun's "Good Morning President", "The Executioner" and "Castaway on the Moon". Director Jang Jin of "Good Morning President" is scheduled to visit Japan and have a Q&A session as well. Will the 'Four Cards' of the Hallyu prove they are the wild card which will reignite the withered Korean Wave?

4 of Korea’s Top Stars at the Tokyo Dome

20091116_4hallyu_572.jpg

Back in July, the boys of TVXQ / DBSK / Tohoshinki rocked the Tokyo Dome. In September, Bae Yong Joon (Yon-Sama) also had a huge event at the Tokyo Dome. As Christmas approaches, there will be a special present for the Japanese fans as you'll see four of Korea's top actors at the Tokyo Dome in December.

On December 17th, Top Korean stars Lee Byung Hun, Song Seung Hun, Won Bin, and Jang Dong Gun will gather together at the Tokyo Dome for a special Hallyu event titled 'Hallyu's Four of A Kind.' The four actors are experiencing their popularity rising in Japan and the tickets despite the high prices (upwards of $175) are going to be a hot commodity. Most people think that any one of the stars could sell out the Tokyo Dome but to have all four at one place would basically make it assured. In fact, the demand seems to be so high that they will hold two events on December 17th, one at 12:30 PM and the other at 6:30 PM. The First Lady of Japan, Miyuki is also said to be an avid Hallyu fan and will most likely be in attendance. Tickets for the event will go on sale November 28th.

The four stars recently gathered in Seoul for a photo shoot:

love this article here. It's about DG being the first and the only achiever of the Grand Slam title in the history of The Blue Dragon Award so far. Grand Slam achiever is given to those who won award in all 4 catogeries (Best New Actor, Most Popular Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Actor). DG won Best New Actor for Repechage (1997), Most Popular Actor (2000 & 2001), Best Supporting Actor for Nowhere to Hide (1999) and Best Actor for Taegukgi(2004). DG achieved the Grand Slam at a young age of 32, which is something to be proud of if you asked me.. . Kudos to him, may he make us proud again in the upcoming Blue Dragon Award... :)

Andre Kim's star-studded network

A galaxy of stars including Lee Young-ae, Jeon Do-yeon, Song Yoon-ah and Han Chae-young and actor Won Bin will appear at the Best Star Award hosted by designer Andre Kim on Nov. 27. At 73, the flamboyant designer is as active as ever, with fashion shows here and abroad attracting many celebrities.

(skipped.....)

Kim Tae-hee has been in Kim's fashion shows since she starred in TV drama "Love Story in Harvard". Kim also spotted actors Song Seung-heon, Won Bin and Jang Dong-gun early in their career. Lee Song-jung, the wife of top baseball player Lee Seung-yop, modeled Kim's fashion when she was starting her career. But before her career could blossom, she got married and left the entertainment business. For news articles about her, pictures from Kim's fashion shows are usually the only available pictures.

Kim's strong connection to the stars is not limited to Korea only. Michael Jackson used to wear Kim's clothes frequently, and figure skating megastar Kim Yu-na also appeared in Kim's show. Jang Dong-gun once said in an interview, "After the fashion show was over, Kim gave me a set of clothes as a gift. I went to the United States, wearing some of the clothes, and someone came to me and asked me if I was a member of a royal family in Asia".

(skipped.....)

There is no doubt about the breadth and depth of Kim's network. He has strong ties with foreign ambassadors in Korea, as well as influential politicians and business gurus. Thanks to that extensive network, Kim can easily adjust his schedule when there is clash itineraries for fashion shows or photo shoots.

Hello Jang Dong Gun’s fans! Anyone interested to hug a life-sized poster of JDG – here’s a chance to do so, just visit KTO-TIC’s Star Corner and you’ll be greeted by him. :D Sharing an article from KTO – for your reading pleasure. :)

In response to international travelers' expressed interest in Korean culture, in 2004 the TIC (Tourist Information Center) opened the Korean Wave Hall on the ground floor of the Korean Tourism Organization building. The Hall is sectioned off into four parts: Film/Drama Corner; Star Corner; Media Corner; and Music Corner, each of which provides visitors with a fun hands-on experience of Korean culture.

'Star Corner,' the most popular of all the sections, displays life-sized posters of famous Hallyu stars like Rain, Jang Dong-gun, Song Seung-heon, and Choi Ji-woo. Visitors who take their picture alongside their favorite "stars" seem to enjoy themselves just as much as meeting their best-loved celebrities in person! Other visitors can be found listening to the OSTs from popular Hallyu dramas or their other favorite Korean songs. Even if they can't understand the Korean language, the feelings portrayed in the songs are so powerful that they transcend both time and language barriers.

At TIC not only can you receive helpful tourist information, but you can take a deeper look at popular Korean Hallyu culture as well.

Korean Celebrity Trends: Plastic Surgery and Injectable Fillers

Traditionally, most Korean stars have one thing in common – plastic surgery.

By Joyce J. Chansingh

The road to Hallyu often involves going under the knife or getting injectable fillers (its latest trend) to attain that ageless and radiant look. Some call it a trend but most would term it a ‘vital necessity’ in the [rather unforgiving] celebrity business.

Dr Moon Hyoung Jin, one of Korea’s leading maxillofacial surgeons was in Singapore recently to talk about facial remodeling and its celebrity trends in Korea.

(skipped.....)

Do patients come in asking to look like a certain Korean movie star?

“Male patients usually ask for Jang Dong Gun and female patients will ask for Han Ga-In,” says Dr Moon in a quiet laughter. He went on to reveal that other much requested celebrities include popular actress Kim Tae-hee, Song Hyo-gyo, who's believed to be a natural beauty and Winter Sonata main spotlight, Bae Yong Joon.

Nipping and tucking, injecting and implanting, all in the quest for better looks. Is the surgery reversible if a patient is unhappy with the end-results? Yes, Dr Moon assured but the likelihood of such a request is usually less than 2%.

So confident you say? See, Korea is well known for its excellent beauty makeover and aesthetic surgical techniques – just look at the stunningly beautiful Korean stars! – enough said.
