Harcourt holds portrait show in Shanghai

By Nie Xin | ShanghaiDaily

AS the writer Roland Barthes wrote in his book “Mythologies” in 1957: “In France you are not an actor if you have not been photographed by Studio Harcourt.” Today the studio stands out as one of the oldest photography studio in the world, with over 80 years of history. Those in Shanghai can now see 60 portraits from the famed Parisian institution on the top-floor gallery of 10 Corso Como through the end of May.

Included in the exhibition are shots of entertainment legends like Edith Piaf and Alain Delon, as well as contemporary Chinese stars like Fan Bingbing and Yue Minjun. Several of the portraits are being shown in public for the first time, including those of Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Korean star Lee Byung Hun and Chinese actor Ge You, according to curator Jean Loh.

Spoiler

With thousands of images of notables from the worlds of cinema, fine art and literature, Studio Harcourt’s portrait catalogue is an integral part of France’s cultural heritage.

The studio first ventured into China in 2012 with an exhibition — focused mainly on French movie stars — at Shanghai’s Sinan Mansion. During this event, Harcourt set up a temporary studio in the city to shoot Chinese artists.

“That was when Harcourt photographers made the portraits of Gao Bowen, Maleonn, Zhang Enli, etc,” the curator added.

Loh also curated the Chanson Francaise exhibition at the Alliance Francaise of Shanghai. This show featured 40 portraits of French singers from the 1930’s to 2012.

For decades, having one’s portrait taken with a “Harcourt Paris” label has been considered a major milestone in the career of any artist, particularly those active in France.

“In France, people are familiar with most of the French celebrities. In China, our selection of Chinese personalities is the result of patient work undertaken since 2012,” Loh explained.

In the current exhibition of multicultural portraits, Loh wanted to contrast the effect of Harcourt’s timeless cinematic lighting on Asian and Western faces.

“Besides their degree of fame or ‘brand appeal,’ the selection also must reflect the diversity and the versatility of Harcourt’s lighting style. How our ‘cinema’ lighting transforms the sitter into an ‘actor’ — that is what I call Harcourt’s power of transfiguration,” he told Shanghai Daily.

Getting the signature “Harcourt look” just right involves not only careful lighting and makeup effects, but also the discerning sensibilities of Studio Harcourt’s photographers who have been nurtured by the in-house history, and especially the history of cinema.

The venue for the ongoing exhibition also includes a book store, a restaurant and a bar. The show was an easy sell for the gallery’s art director, Corso Como Carla Sozzani, who runs a photo gallery in Milan. “I hope the exhibition will attract young people to come visit this unique design center in Shanghai, to buy not only clothes and accessories but also books and magazines,” Loh adds.

Date: Through May 30, 10am-10pm

Venue: 4/F, 10 Corso Como Shanghai Gallery, North Annex-Wheelock Square

Address: 1717 Nanjing Rd W.

[Asian Filmist Guest Post List] 5 Korean movies to watch from 2015

Source: AsianFilmist via Hancinema.net

photo720955.jpg

While it is 2016 currently and Korean films are starting to pick up, it's good to look back at last year's films.

For many people, the end of last year was the era of Star Wars, since episode 7 came out. However, while Star Wars was watched by many Koreans here in Seoul, 2015 Korean films held their own. In fact, another movie, the Himalayas, outsold the famed science fiction film on opening week.

Last year had some true gems in Korean cinema worth watching. From action to romance, 2015 was sure to have a film for everyone.

With that being said, here's five movies to watch in 2015 in no particular order.

"Inside Men"

Dealing with the dark, corrupt media manipulation, Inside Men reveals a story of various politicians fighting for power and ego.

When Ahn Sang-goo (Lee Byung-hun) uses his media connections to help a conservative newspaper editor and congressman in a presidential campaign, he secretly makes a deal. By helping the two, he would pocket the money of the newspaper's largest sponsor.

Yet, someone is onto Ahn. Woo Jang-hoon, an ambitious prosecutor, sees something fishy with Ahn. Knowing that exposing this scandal could make him rise to the top fast, he investigates Sang-goo's relationship with the editor and congressman.

However, Ahn won't go down so easily. He is already plotting revenge against the budding prosecutor. The battle lines between the various parties for power, revenge, and success are soon drawn.

"Gangnam Blues"

"Coin Locker Girl"

"Chronicles of Evil"

"The Office"

There have been contradicting news updates today, some media outlets reported that LBH will be in 'Manhunt', most likely quoting the Apple Daily update last week. But BH Entertainment has stated that he would not be able to join the movie because of schedule conflict. Lee Byung Hun is currently filming 'Master' and that may take awhile. Right after the filming finishes, he will be participating in the promotions fpr 'The Magnificent Seven.' Apart from the initial teaser poster and trailer, they have not started any promotions for the movie. Remember how his other Hollywood movies, there were a lot of interviews and premiere events, like for the two GI Joe movies. This time around with the avid attention of #Mag7 movie and the cast, obviously there will be a lot of interviews with all of them and undoubtedly, a global promos by MGM, Columbia and SONY Pictures, Only 3 months till September.

It's too bad that BH could not be in Dir. John Woo's movie this time. He would if his schedule permits for the chance to work with the esteemed auteur who definitely wanted to collaborate with LBH, just not this time unfortunately. He must have tried to adjust things but not quite possible, Indeed his schedule will be too packed, hopefully the chance will come in a better offer and time. Without 'Manhunt', hopefully there will be another Korean project at the end of the year (apart from Single Rider being released), maybe with Dir. KJW again, HopeHopeHope!

Thanks to the highlight at Angel70, portrait by Wakana Ono. Not a new photo but presumably, one of JOFC exclusives that we've not seen before..

Top stars in line for acting awards
In a year of hit dramas and films, the field is stronger than ever

Source: INSIDE Korea JoongAng Daily

09203227.jpg

This year’s 52nd Baeksang Arts Awards has published its list of candidates for the Best Actor and Best Actress Awards. Hosted by JTBC and Ilgan Sports, affiliates of the Korea JoongAng Daily, this event is recognized as one of the most prestigious entertainment awards in Korea along with Blue Dragon Film Awards and the Daejong Film Awards.

Looking at the resumes and achievements over the past year of these 10 actors extraordinaire, it is safe to say that this year’s competition will be neck-and-neck. The winners of each category will be announced on June 3 at Kyung Hee University’s Grand Peace Hall.

Best Actor

Baek Yoon-sik (“Inside Men”)

As actor Lee Byung-hun, who played one of the two protagonists in the thriller flick “Inside Men,” can attest, the heinous yet cunning journalist Lee Kang-hee could be played by no one but Baek Yoon-sik. Showcasing his acting prowess honed during his long acting career, Baek’s dauntingly accurate portrait of a villain earned the well-deserved nomination.

Lee Byung-hun (“Inside Men”)

The actor’s first-ever role that involved using the Jeolla dialect did not seem to impede him from leaving a lasting impact. “Let’s have a drink of Maldives at Mojito,” Lee’s hilarious line in the movie, made the audience crack up. As well as some of his facetious moments, Lee showed off various skills, attesting to his Hollywood experience.

Song Kang-ho (“The Throne”)

King Yeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) has been played by many good actors over the years, but Song’s portrayal made it more special. Adjusting his voice, expressions and gestures, Song covered 40 years of the king’s life in this historical film, not to mention all the changes within that span. His exquisite portrayal of Yeongjo’s despair over his son, Crown Prince Sado, confined in a wooden chest, mesmerized the viewers.

Yoo Ah-in (“The Throne”)

A month after starring as the immature and psychopathic heir of a conglomerate in the crime comedy flick “Veteran,” the actor returned to the big screen via “The Throne,” in which he showcased a different sides of himself in the role of Crown Prince Sado. The scene of him brandishing a sword, as if possessed, proved the actor’s ability to be fully immersed and deliver extreme emotions.

Hwang Jung-min (“Veteran”)

Having been in so many successful films, Hwang’s appearance in a movie almost guarantees its triumph. Rough around the edges yet with a superior sense of justice, Hwang’s detective character, Seo Do-chul, delivered unforgettable lines in a funny way during his quest to arrest and convict a criminal millionaire, not to mention all the stunts he pulled off to make this nail-biter even more exciting.

Best Actress

Hwang Jung-eum (“She Was Pretty”)

Hwang was an indispensable part of this hit TV drama. Although the drama started off with only modest viewership ratings, it wrapped up with a satisfying 18 percent viewership rating, showing an increase of nearly 13 percent. Playing the lead role of Kim Hye-jin, who was often shabby and unkempt, the actress is acknowledged as being a pivotal figure in the drama’s turnaround toward the end.

Kim Hyun-joo (“I Have a Lover”)

Kim’s quadruple role should be a closer. Playing two characters who later experienced earth-shaking changes, the role assigned to Kim was pretty close to a quadruple role. Throughout the whole 50-episode run, this jack-of-all-trades pulled it off beautifully. Playing a pivotal figure in the drama, the actress was the anchor of the production and the cast.

Kim Hye-soo (“Signal”)

As big a star as Kim Hye-soo may very well raise questions for appearing in cable TV dramas. The actress, however, had faith in the story and responded with her stellar acting. Due to the drama’s time-travel aspect, Kim had to play a veteran police officer in one minute and a rookie officer in the next.

La Mi-ran (“Reply 1988”)

Having earned the nickname Ms. Cheetah to honor her outlandish fashion statements on “Reply 1988,” the actress made the drama even more interesting. Equipped with ad-libs and unmitigated slapstick, La tickled laughs out of fans. However, the jokes weren’t her only ammo. Secretly crying for her son who was to have heart surgery, the actress was also a great messenger of the drama’s theme: family.

Song Hye-kyo (“Descendants of the Sun”)

What more needs to be said of the actress who was arguably the face of the drama that created an international sensation, “Descendants of the Sun?” Having starred in many romance flicks in her career, the actress again showcased her chemistry with her male counterpart - so much so that their relationship was rumored to be real at one point.

John Woo, the man behind action classics such as A Better Tomorrow, The Killer, Bullet in the Head and Hard Boiled, is finally making a return to the genre that made him an internationally acclaimed director.

After years making Hollywood films and big budget Chinese epics like Red Cliff and the recent The Crossing, Woo is going to remake the 1976 Japanese classic action thriller Manhunt (starring the late Ken Takakura), which is the story of a man who is accused of multiple crimes and trying desperately to clear his name.

Filming for Manhunt will begin later this year. The film will be set and shot in Japan; and feature Chinese, English and Korean dialogue. Media Asia is distributing the film with an attached release date set for 2017 (via Martin Sandison). Until we have more details, don’t miss the film’s teaser poster here.

Updates: According to AFS, Lee Byung-Hun has dropped out of Manhunt, due to scheduling conflicts.
