‘The Assassin’ Sweeps 10th Asian Film Awards

Patrick Frater
Asia Bureau Chief Variety.com

Hou Hsiao-hsien’s “The Assassin” was the major — and unsurprising — winner at the 10th edition of the Asian Film Awards.

It was named as best film with Hou also earning the best director prize, topping off a total of eight awards across performance and technical categories.

Shu Qi, the film’s troubled assassin, was named best actress, while Zhou Yun took best supporting actress. Mark Lee Ping-bing collected yet another award for the film’s sumptuous cinematography, both indoors and in stunning exteriors in China’s interior.

The minimalist and dialog-heavy martial arts drama which had its premiere in the Cannes film festival, also collected prizes for best design, music and sound.

That sweep left relatively thin pickings for other contenders. Star Korean performer Lee Byung-hun was named best actor for his role in hit drama “Inside Men,” while Japanese superstar Tadanobu Asano earned the best supporting actor prize for “Journey to the Shore.” Jia Zhang-ke collected a best script award for his “Mountains May Depart.”

Hong Kong drama ‘Port of Call’ earned two awards; one for actress Jessie Li as best newcomer, one for its editing.

Indian period piece “Bajirao Mastani” was the winner in the best visual effects category. Korea’s “The Throne” earned the best costume prize.

The awards, which are now the responsibility of an ‘Academy,’ were presented Thursday evening at the Venetian Hotel in Macau.

Actor Lee Byung-hun named best actor at Asian Film Awards

SEOUL, March 18 (Yonhap) -- South Korean actor Lee Byung-hun has won best actor at the Asian Film Awards (AFA) for his lead role in "Inside Men."

Lee, who stars as the vengeful political henchman Ahn Sang-gu in the South Korean political thriller, was honored at the 10th AFA held in Macau on Thursday.

The movie directed by Woo Min-ho portrays the complicated relationships between politicians, the press, the wealthy, law enforcement authorities and organized crime in South Korea.

Since its release in November, it has gathered more than 9 million viewers, becoming the second-most-watched R-rated movie of all time in the country.

'The Assassin' makes a killing at Asian Film Awards

Macao (AFP) - A movie about a highly-trained female assassin swept the Asian Film Awards in Macau Thursday, bagging prizes for best film, best actress and best director at the glittering ceremony.

The movie took home more than half of the night's prizes -- eight out of 15 trophies -- at one of Asia's leading film awards held in the glamorous casino town in southern China.

Set in the Tang Dynasty era in China, "The Assassin" is a slow-burning minimalist movie with Taiwanese megastar Shu Qi playing a skilled female assassin sent back to her home province to kill its governor, who is also the man she loves.

"I'm so lucky this year," Shu, wearing a sparkling silver dress, told reporters after receiving the best actress award.

"I couldn't have made it through the two years of production for 'The Assassin' without (the help of) bandages and medicine," quipped 39-year-old Shu, referring to the gruelling physical demands required for the action sequences.

Chinese actress Zhou Yun grabbed best supporting actress for her performance in the film, which she said was a "surprise".

"I won the award because the movie is so good, I contributed just a small part of all the impressive aspects (of the movie)," Zhou said.

The film is directed by Taiwan's Hou Hsiao-hsien, who sticks to his trademark aesthetic that won him fame for previous titles "Millennium Mambo" and "The Puppetmaster".

The 68-year-old, who did not attend the ceremony, is one of the most recognisable names in Taiwan's New Wave cinema.

He has won a string of international awards, including best director at the Cannes Film Festival in May for "The Assassin".

Though "The Assassin" dominated the night, others didn't go home empty handed.

South Korean star Lee Byung-hun won best actor for his role in political thriller "The Inside Men".

"Today's result is very good... I am very emotional about everybody's support," Lee told reporters.

Chinese romance film "Mountains May Depart" won the award for best screenplay, while India's "Bajirao Mastani", a love story about a general and a Muslim princess, won best visual effects.

Hong Kong action choreographer Yuen Wo-ping, who worked on films such as "The Matrix", "Kill Bill" and "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" was given this year's lifetime achievement award. Veteran Japanese actress Kirin Kiki was also given the prize.

French actress Sophie Marceau attended the ceremony to hand out the best actress award, to Shu's delight.

"I'm very happy to be on the stage to hug Sophie," best actress Shu said.

The awards were organised by the Hong Kong International Film Festival and were hosted at Macau's glitzy Venetian resort this year, the show's 10th instalment.

Married actors Lee Byung-hun and Lee Min-jung generated separate headlines Friday as each star's screen performance has been recognized inside and outside the nation.

Byung-hun, 45, won the "Best Actor" category for his role in the Korean crime thriller"Inside Men" (2015) at the 10th Asian Film Awards in Macau on Thursday. Popular Chinese stars like Donnie Yen from "Ip Man 3" and Feng Xiaogang from "Mr. Six" were also nominated in the category.

Meanwhile, Min-jung, 34, has won positive reviews for her performance in the SBS TV comedy drama "Please Come Back, Mister." She plays a mother who gets reconnected with her dead husband via a man possessed by her husband's spirit. Scenes from Thursday's episode showed her emotional range as she sadly talks to her dead husband in a scene that became much-talked about the next day.

"The actress's realistic portrayal of her role derives from the improvement in her performance," online daily My Daily said in an article titled "Lee Min-jung, Now Different."

"Her performance, after she gave a birth to her first child (in March 2015), has certainly deepened. Her emotional attachment to the role must have been special because they shared the same ‘mother of one' scenario."

In 2012, the couple denied rumors about their romantic relationship but they walked the aisle a year later.
