rubie
.. rubie got it all wrong.. sorry.. my bad.. HJW suggested to shave his head if ASHFALL crosses 5 million admission and pull out front teeth if the movie crosses 10 million admission.. seriously, these are not good ideas at all. However, when a mukbang was suggested (seeing their eating scenes in movies), both LBH-HJW agreed unanimously. Asked for a number (of audience admission).. Byunghun said.. 100,000 and not 10 million as presumed before this. LOL.. the presenter is already so excited .. too easy. Thanks to the fans' highlight on twitter, watch the program with English subs here. The segment on ASHFALL starts at 35:50 time-mark. rubie
Just found this interesting YT channel hosted by Jason Bechervaise, in Korean & English with subs discussing Korean cinema with fellow movie critics in Korea. Published on October 31, 2019 by 뭅뭅 0:37 time-mark: Even though it's his favorite Kim Ji Woon movie, Pierce Conran strongly recommends to avoid watching I SAW THE DEVIL for first-timers to Korean movies.. because it's super violent. Yup.. we can't agree more. Terrible doesn't necessarily mean bad.. just not suitably appropriate.. well, you know.. I know.. we all know.. Then.. Korean films recommended for non-Koreans 3:18 time-mark: A glowing good mention of Joint Security Area (JSA) This.. we can't agree more as well. Hands-down. JSA is 100% Korean classic 101.

rubie
December 2, 2019 Upcoming Film “Ashfall” Releases Striking Main Poster + Confirms Premiere Date Source: Soompi by J. Lim Upcoming film “Ashfall” (also known as “Baekdusan”) has set its premiere date and released the official main poster featuring Lee Byung Hun, Ha Jung Woo, Ma Dong Seok, Jeon Hye Jin, and Suzy. “Ashfall” will tell the story of a group of people who set out to stop the final eruption of Mount Baekdu, which would be strong enough to swallow both North and South Korea. The new poster shows the five main characters as they face the dangers in front of them. Lee Byung Hun plays Rhee Jun Pyung, a first class North Korean army officer who has been sent to aid in the secret mission to stop the eruption. Joining forces with him is Ha Jung Woo’s character Jo In Chang, the captain of the Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team in South Korea. At their side is Ma Dong Seok playing Kang Bong Rae, a geology professor who has specialized his studies on the eruption of Mount Baekdu, and Jeon Hye Jin as Jeon Yoo Kyung, who is in charge of the operations. Suzy will play the role of Choi Ji Young, who is on the ground in the city as the situation dissolves into chaos. With the tagline, “We have to stop the final eruption,” anticipation is rising to see if the team will be able to pull off a mission that seems impossible. With a strong cast and an interesting concept of Mount Baekdu erupting, “Ashfall” is set to make its premiere in theaters on December 19. rubie
December 3, 2019 Dictator’s assassination, volcanic eruptions at Paektusan coming to big screens soon By Yoon Min-sik The Korea Herald While South Korea’s box office is dominated by Disney’s “Frozen 2” at the moment, the competition is expected to get fierce later this month and early next month, when a number of local tent-pole films hit the theater. The producers of “The Man Standing Next” confirmed Tuesday that the film -- inspired by the true story of the assassination of a former Korean president -- will open next month. Starring Lee Byung-hun, Lee Sung-min and Kwak Do-won, the film is based on real-life events that took place in the 40 days leading up to the assassination of former President Park Chung-hee. “The Man Standing Next” (Showbox) Showbox, the film’s distributor, released photos of both Lees as their respective characters in their office, another photo of a man standing in front of a tank, and one of Kwak speaking in what appears to be a courtroom -- possibly at the trial of the character inspired by Kim Jae-gyu, Park’s confidant-turned-assassin. Lee Byung-hun plays this controversial figure, who remains the subject of conflicting theories, and Lee Sung-min plays the man who reigned over the country for 18 years. The film is directed by Woo Min-ho, the mind behind the acclaimed criminal drama “Inside Men.” Another Lee Byung-hun film will be screened in theaters later this month. “Ashfall,” starring Lee and Ha Jung-woo, will hit the theaters Dec. 19, according to CJ ENM. The film, also starring Ma Dong-suk (Don Lee), Jeon Hye-jin and Bae Su-zy -- better known as K-pop star Suzy -- is about what happens when multiple volcanic eruptions occur at Paektusan and a group of people from North and South Korea must join forces to stop the annihilation of the Korean Peninsula. Lee plays an operative from the North, Ha plays an explosive ordinance disposal operative from the South, and Ma plays a geologist. All three characters play a critical role in a plan to stop the final explosion that will wipe out everyone on both sides. It is directed by Lee Hae-jun, the veteran screenwriter and director at the helm of the 2009 film “Castaway on the Moon.” Another major player, Lotte Entertainment, is expected to announce a release date soon for “Forbidden Dreams,” starring Choi Min-sik and Han Suk-kyu. The film is set to hit the theaters in December, and the specific date is widely expected to fall in the last week of the month. The film is set in the Joseon era and tells the story of King Sejong (Han) and scientist and engineer Jang Yeong-sil (Choi). It focuses on the relationship between the two men of science and on what may have happened after Jang’s name vanished from the records, following his downfall due to a famous blunder that caused injury to the king. rubie
Source: CJ Entertainment ASHFALL Main trailer "Stop the last explosion" December 4, 2019 "Ashfall" Arrives in An Awkward Political Environment By William Schwartz on HanCinema.net On December 19th "Ashfall" will be released at the domestic South Korean box office. The major film will take place among the backdrop of an erupting volcano, the titular "Ashfall", and will feature a united task force featuring North Koreans and South Koreans who attempt to deal with the task. This aspect of the production may be awkward in the current political environment, where North Korea is snubbing South Korea at the backdrop of nuclear negotiations with the United States. North Korea has always been present in South Korean film. However, the portrayal of the country has come a long way since the generally antagonistic portrayal in "Shiri". More recent movies have emphasized cooperation between North and South Korea, as "Confidential Assignment" and "Steel Rain" went on to become box office hits even as their portrayal of North Korea as a generally sinister government remained largely unchanged. "Ashfall" is a natural extension of that optimism. But as talks between the two Koreas have not panned out in the real world the movie may suffer from apparent discordance with reality. "The Spy Gone North" and the upcoming "Ashfall" have evaded the problem of clashing with the real world by depicting historical events with the more generally optimistic tone that is the prevailing mood. However this may all mean little in terms of box office. "The Spy Gone North" underperformed relative to "Confidential Assignment" and "Steel Rain", even as the former film was more highly lauded. As is usually the case, genre standards will probably prove more critical to the success of "Ashfall", even if the drama's production during a more optimistic phase of negotiations will likely be reflected once the movie's theaters.
