The highly confidential Korean aviation disaster movie “Emergency Declaration”  is publicised for the first time.  (a translation) 

 

 

Director Han Jae Rim (HJR) is joining hands with  Song Kang Ho, Lee Byung Hun, Jeon Do Yeon, and Kim Nam Gil, an unimaginable film lineup becomes a reality.

 

The director of “The Face Reader," “The King” Han Jae Rim’s new film, “Emergency Declaration” has conducted a highly airtight security on the film.  Any story is unpredictable aside from “an aviation disaster movie”. The mysterious layer of this film became a hot topic inside and outside the film industry after the news that many leading actors such as Song Kang Ho, Lee Byung Hun, Jeon Do Yeon, Kim Nam Gil, and Im Si Wan  joined. The following interview can be a clue to understanding what kind of disaster movie "Emergency Declaration" is all about.

Q.  When was shooting supposed to start originally?

HJR:  At the end of March. The "Emergency Declaration" is an aviation film, but the aircraft package was not shipped from the US  due to the Coronavirus epidemic.   There is a company in Hollywood that specialises in assembling and arranging the physical aircraft, and we cooperated with that company.  As the epidermic has prolonged,   the US prohibits crowd gathering.  Consequently, some of the containers with aircraft packages have not yet been shipped to South Korea.   The British company that operates the aircraft for action shooting has completed its preparation but was unable to come to South Korea due to the outbreak. Europeans are completely unable to understand the situation of South Korea, where the world's film industry is suspended, and they still insist on filming.  So I had to discontinue my cooperation with that company and choose a South Korean company to make preparations again. Such events occur in succession, affecting the start-up time.

 

Q.  If you think positively, is this not the time to reorganise?

HJR:  If you make sure you have a good preparation, shooting will be much smoother.  There are not many things that can be tried in the coronavirus epidemic environment.  The United States and Great Britain did not expect the outbreak to last so long when the number of confirmed patients was small. For this reason, we had to go through many twists and turns when working with US and British companies.

 

Q:  “Emergency Declaration” only tells everyone that it is an aviation disaster
       movie.  In fact,  "Only Song Kang Ho and Lee Byung Hun have read the
       script?”.  What is the reason for keeping information on the movie so
       secretive?

HJR:  Disclosing information on the movie before its release may create misunderstanding for the fans.  Knowing the plot may reduce the emotions associated with watching the movie.   I tormented over maximising the interest of the movie.  With a lot of invested budget and a lot of preparation, and the fact that the movie cannot be released right after shooting is finished, I worked hard on security .

 

Q.  I heard this project was proposed to you a long time ago.

HJR:  A dozen years ago, this is one of the projects that CJ Investment Team Leader H. S. Lee, showed me. The story is well-formed, and it would be interesting to just unravel the reasons behind it.  But for various reasons, I did not take up the project.  Afterwards, I shot  “The Face Reader”.  I decided to pick up the project again, but I did not do so.  After my last film, Y. J.  Fang  then Team Leader of CJ Investment, asked me if I wanted to come back to this project and bought the movie-based copyright at the same time. He put it aside for two years and the script was written last year.

 

Q: When you mention disasters in Korean society, you will immediately think
     of the sinking of the Sewol ferry and current Coronavirus epidemic.  What
     is the opportunity to make a disaster movie?

HJR:  There will be no specific incidents in the movie.  Recently, Korean society has suffered a large or small disaster. The scenario I envisioned when I wrote the script was a bit unpleasant when it happened exactly in reality.  Because it is an aviation disaster movie, you can expect the interest brought by this theme.  But more importantly, how do people act in the face of disaster? How do fans accept their actions? In this regard, "Emergency Declaration”  is not simply a display of disasters, nor is it just a story of disasters.

 

Q: A major or minor disaster in Korean society has become an opportunity for you to make this movie?

HJR: This is very important, there are many disasters in modern Korea. Although the characters, types and scale of the disasters vary, but is not there always the same kind of action that people take to overcome the crisis? From this point of view, this movie is not simply a subject of consumer disaster, it includes social meaning.  In addition, I also want to convey the message "We can overcome the disaster" in the film.

 

Q:  Do you like the theme of disaster?

HJR:  Directors should all like a variety of themes.  Compared to disasters, "Emergency Declaration" mainly depicts the stories of people who have suffered disasters.

 

Q:  The title will be reminiscent of "Emergency Landing" (1954)

HJR: This is like asking the reference of the movie. If you want to ask yourself what is the attitude of the movie? I would like to answer that this is a movie with similarities to Bong Joon Ho’s “The Host”. Is it not the occurrence of monsters in the Han River a metaphor and symbol of Korean society? After the monster appeared, the cause of death of the “Gang Du " family and the current status of Korean society surfaced. The same is true of the “Emergency Declaration," which describes  the current state of Korean society surrounding disasters.

 

Q:  Actors Song Kang Ho, Lee Byung Hun, Jeon Do Yeon and Kim Nam Gil
      acting  together became the talk of the movie industry before filming. 
      From the point of view of the gathering of these actors, it seems closer to
      group play than this form of telling the story of one or two people from
      beginning to end.
HJR:   The character that led the plot development at the story center is Song Kang Ho sunbae.   Many people, including him, experienced disasters and overcame crises. People in disaster become weak and afraid, and the movie will show what they will do in that situation.  (Unlike the past in which the Korean government has not done its duty properly), now the government is doing a great job of coping with the new Coronavirus epidemic, the public should be proud of it.  So the movie also reflects the changes of this era.

 

Q: This is the third collaboration with Song Kang Ho  after “The Show Must
     Go On” and “The Face Reader”.

HJR: He showed a variety of appearances in each of his films. Overall, he is very enthusiastic and explosive. However, in "Emergency Declaration", Song Kang Ho sunbae will show a different appearance from his previous works. He plays an elderly character who takes care of his own body, that is to say, as a character with a  shrunken role. Song Kang Ho sunbae and Lee Byung Hun sunbae are actors known by Hollywood staff to work well together.  They are both burdened and blessed.

 

Q: First-ever collaboration with Lee Byung Hun, Jeon Do Yeon and Kim Nam
     Gil.

HJR:   Although it is not yet possible to reveal the roles carefully, the film has a delightful way of showing the fresh faces of the actors.  This movie is not a story showing how disaster conditions maximise the pleasure of disaster subjects, but a story that solves problems realistically.  Using the spy theme as a metaphor, it is closer to the reality-oriented “Bourne”  film series  rather than the "007 series" that puts the quantity offensive up front.

 

Q. The director of photography Lee Mo Gae  and I were distressed about the
      visual presentation.    

HJR:  The filming work is closely connected with the work of visual special effects (VFX), so it needs to be thoroughly prepared. The story is better suited to express strong feelings than to reveal the image based on the theme, so film is more suitable than digital . For the unique taste in the aircraft, in order to show it through the photo, I intend to use 16mm film to take out the texture. But the film processing  plant no longer exists, so I gave up the idea of using film in ”Emergency Declaration”

 

Q.  The aircraft space is small, and the angle and range of camera movement
      can also be limited.

HJR:   So I told Director Lee Mo Gae to do his best to enjoy and express in a limited space.

 

Q.  The aircraft has a large shape

 

HJR:  This is a story that happened on a large aircraft similar to Boeing 777. Art Director MW Lee who participated in “Train to Busan”Along with the Gods 2," is currently working on art in the airplane. The actual space needed to assemble an airplane needs to be in line with the aircraft and characters in the movie.

 

Q:  When does the shooting start?

HJR:   The goal is to start shooting in May at the latest. There are still a few aircraft packages that have not been received, and I plan to start filming when they arrive.   Just like the Korean movies being filmed now, we will pay attention to epidemic prevention when shooting. Fortunately, the 70% of "Emergency Declaration" will be shot in the studio.  As long as the cast members pay attention to the risk of infection, there should not be any major problems.

Im Siwan, Kim Nam Gil, Park Hae Joon, and more have been confirmed to join Song Kang Ho and Lee Byung Hun in the upcoming star-studded film “Declaration of Emergency” (literal title)!

“Declaration of Emergency” is a disaster film that will tell the story of the unprecedented calamities that arise when an airplane is forced to make an emergency landing.

Song Kang Ho, who rose to international fame for his role in the film “Parasite,” will play a detective who investigates the catastrophic incident. Lee Byung Hun is confirmed to play a father who has a phobia of planes but boards the airplane for his daughter. Jeon Do Yeon is also confirmed to join the cast as a general and plans to show off a completely new side to her acting.

The cast will also include Kim Nam Gil, who has tackled a variety of genres in the past with his experience in films and dramas. He will play the vice-captain of the airplane.

Additionally, Im Siwan will return to the big screen to take on the role of a passenger who boards the airplane by himself.

Kim So Jin of the award-winning film “The Man Standing Next” will also star in “Declaration of Emergency” as a flight attendant, while Park Hae Joon from the highly-viewed JTBC drama “The World of the Married” is confirmed to play the head of the government’s crisis management center.
