"Escape from Mogadishu" the highest-grossing film of the year, surpassed 3.5 million viewers

spacer.png

According to distributor Lotte Entertainment on the 21st, "Mogadishu" exceeded 3.5 million cumulative viewers in the afternoon of the 56th day of its release.

Following the overwhelming box office on the first day of its release, "Mogadishu" surpassed 1 million on the seventh day of its release, 2 million on the 17th day of its release, and 3 million on the 33rd day of its release. During the Chuseok holiday, it has continued to be a long-term box office hit, driving up to the top of the box office.

In response, actors Kim Yoon-seok, Jo In-sung, Koo Gwan-hwa and Ryu Seung-wan delivered a 3.5 million box office photo proof and a thank-you video. Like the cookie video of the video, Kim Yoon-seok tactfully changed the position of the number balloon and said, "Until the day 3.5 million reaches 5.3 million, it is the theater right now."

They will visit major theaters in Seoul on the 22nd, the last day of the Chuseok holiday, to thank them for their success.

*** “Unexpected Business” may be returning for season two in the first half of next year (2022) as what is  reported today, September 22. This is still on the planning-stage in regard to the specific schedule and cast. I'm curious whether Cha Tae Hyun and Jo In Sung will appear in the season 2 show again, though. It would be COOL if we could get to see both together again. We saw how NICE they are as they interacted with the people in the countryside. We also got to know the stories of each of the customers who shopped in the supermarket & dine in their little bar. The food served look delicious. :Fist1:

5 Recommendations for Korean Movies that Discuss Letters, Makes you nostalgic!

Along with the development of increasingly modern times, manual correspondence activities are slowly being abandoned. Many people prefer to communicate by email , chat applications , and various social media.

However, handwritten letters give off a distinct nostalgic vibe that is different from communication via technology. This is reflected in the following five South Korean films, all of which discuss letters in the plot of the story.

The Classic (2003)

As the title suggests, The Classic is one of the most iconic and unforgettable classic romance films . Studded with famous stars from the Ginseng Country, this film stars Son Ye Jin, Cho Seung Woo, Jo In Sung, and Lee Ki Woo.

This film tells the story of Ji Hye (Son Ye Jin) who is trapped in a love triangle because her best friend likes the man she loves. One day, he finds a box containing love letters belonging to his mother who has a love story similar to his current situation.

4 Korean films that became box-office hits despite pandemic

20211001140750795_A5APZ1B2.jpg

From left are the posters of the four Korean films that each sold more than a million tickets this year: "Escape from Mogadishu," "Sinkhole," "Hostage: Missing Celebrity" and "On the Line."

By Kim Yeojin and Lee Jihae
Photos = Korean Film Council

One of the industries most hard-hit by the COVID-19 pandemic is movie theaters.

The Korean Film Council (KOFIC) on Sept. 4 said tickets sales this year from January to late August fell 16.9% to KRW 331.1 billion from KRW 398.3 billion over the same time period last year. The number of moviegoers dropped 25.5% to 34.91 million from 46.87 million year on year.

The pandemic's heavy toll on the sector looks even worse if compared with statistics from 2019, before the pandemic broke out. Ticket sales that year from January to August hit KRW 1.32 trillion and the number of cinemagoers was 156.02 million, while the corresponding figures for this year plunged 75% and 77.6%, respectively.

Thus the Korean film industry has plummeted to a fourth of its pre-pandemic size.

Four homegrown films, however, have given the sector a shot in the arm amid the pandemic by selling a million tickets each: "Escape from Mogadishu," "Sinkhole," "Hostage: Missing Celebrity" and "On the Line."

According to data released on Sept. 1 from the council's integrated computing system, "Escape" sold 3.56 million tickets, "Sinkhole" 2.18 million, "Hostage" 1.62 million and "On the Line" a million.

The following are brief descriptions of these four movies.

20210927090105617_SU5STSZ0.jpg

Escape from Mogadishu
Set in 1991 in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, the film is based on the real-life story of South and North Korean ambassadors in the African country cooperating to escape from the city, which was cordoned off due to the still-ongoing Somalian civil war that started in 1991.

The movie drew attention for being reminiscent of the numerous people who gathered at Kabul International Airport in Afghanistan shortly after the Taliban seized the Afghan capital this year. Directed by Ryoo Seung-wan, whose credits including "Veteran" (2015) and "The Battleship Island" (2017), "Escape" stars Kim Yoon-seok, Jo In-sung, Heo Joon-ho and Koo Kyo-hwan.

"Escape from Mogadishu", selected for the 94th Academy International Film Awards in Korea

spacer.png

Director Ryu Seung-wan's "Mogadishu" will be presented as a representative of Korean films at the Academy Awards next year.

The Film Promotion Committee said on the 5th that "Mogadishu" was selected for the entry of Korean films in the 94th Academy Film Awards International Feature Film Awards. This year, a total of six entries, including "Mogadishu," have been applied for entries.

The judges said, "In recent years, the Academy Award has no longer been an award ceremony unique to the U.S., but an award ceremony for world filmmakers, and there has been a lot of discussion on what movies have the 'representative' of Korean films."

The judges said, "Despite the global COVID-19 crisis, this year's applications are still showing solid potential and diversity of Korean films," adding, "We expect interest in Korean films that began with 'Parasite' to continue to 'Mogadishu', and the academy supports good results."

"Mogadishu" is a story about the escape of people who were isolated from the civil war in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, in 1991. It features Kim Yoon-seok, Jo In-sung, Heo Joon-ho, Jung Man-sik, Kim So-jin, Kim Jae-hwa, and Park Kyung-hye. Director Ryu Seung-wan's new film, which directed "Unfair Trade," "Berlin" and "Veteran," has become the best hit of the year, attracting 3.58 million people in the COVID-19 pandemic.

'Escape from Mogadishu' selected as S. Korea's Oscar entry

spacer.png

The South Korean action film based on a true story of the life-and-death escape by South and North Korean diplomats during the Somali civil war in the 1990s will represent South Korea in next year's Oscars.

The Korean Film Council (KOFIC) said Tuesday that it has chosen "Escape from Mogadishu" out of six films as the country's entry for the best international feature film category of the 94th Academy Awards.

Last year at the 92nd Oscars, South Korea's "Parasite" won the non-English movie section that requires each country to submit a single film as their official representative.

Bong Joon-ho's black comedy swept four Oscar titles, including best international feature film and best picture, becoming the first Korean-made film to win an Oscar.

"Based on a real story, 'Escape from Mogadishu' impresses viewers with quality action and suspense, well combined with the dramatic story from inter-Korean tension and cooperation," KOFIC said in a release.

"It has already received rave reviews at home and abroad," it said. "We hope 'Mogadishu' will continue to attract global attention to Korean films initiated by 'Parasite.'"

Directed by Ryoo Seung-wan, "Mogadishu" is about diplomats in South and North Korean missions in Somalia cooperating to escape the country during the 1991 civil war.

@syntyche thanks for sharing this great news. Wow.............the movie will represent South Korea in next year's Oscars. And this is out of six films, huh. I heard that the movie impresses viewers with quality action and suspense. Besides, it has already received rave reviews in SK and abroad. I don't compare but I hope 'Mogadishu' will continue to attract global attention to Korean films initiated by 'Parasite. Looking forward to this next year.  :Fist1:
