Jaejoong's Solo Concert to Expand Into Asian Tour

C-JeS Entertainment announced on January 24, “Since Jaejoong‘s solo album is garnering much attention domestically and internationally, we have decided to expand his concert into an Asian tour.” Jaejoong’s first solo album has sold 67,000 copies despite it being only a mini album. Moreover, he topped iTunes rock chart in 9 different countries and his album’s already sold out at several major record stores. 

In his Asian tour concert series, Jaejoong will reveal a song that was not released previously. C-JeS Entertainment stated, “He has written a powerful dance song as a surprise gift for his fans. He is currently working together with the band and choreographers, preparing for the surprise stage, and perfecting the performance.” Jaejoong also plans on performing some of his favorite songs like Yim Jae Beom‘s “For You” with live session bands during his concerts. 

His first solo concert “Your, My and Mine” will be held in Ilsan, Korea on January 26 and 27, followed by the Asian Tour concert series beginning in February.

[interview Part I] JYJ's Kim Jaejoong Talks About Prejudice Against Idol Members Taking on Rock

The public likes what they′re used to, as it takes time for them to recognize anything new and again settle down with the changes. This is why stars, who live off the love and interest of their fans, often listen more to their fans than themselves.

Idols are especially put under strict standards. They′re often attacked for taking on any genre other than dance or ballad. The most prominent example was H.O.T.′s leader Moon Hee Jun. When he announced he would become a rock singer after H.O.T.′s disbandment, many scoffed at his choice and a large group of anti-fans amassed to mock his every move.

JYJ′s Kim Jae Joong, however, took up the challenge and decided to release his first solo album of his career in the rock genre. It took him 10 years to arrive at his first solo mini album I. As it came after such a long wait, the way he expressed his thirst for the music he likes burned with passion.

Kim Jae Joong told his story through the tracks of the album, and showed he was thinking seriously about rock by composing many of the tracks. The public welcomed his sincerity, and Kim Jae Joong managed to smile with them after spilling his heart out through his music. Enews met with the passionate rock singer Kim Jae Joong.

This is your first solo album in 10 years. How did you come to release your album?

“I had been active as JYJ, then I started acting when the other members also started to launch their solo ventures. I met with my fans as an actor for a long time. There were fans who loved to see me act, but there were fans who wanted to hear more music from us and missed our singing voices, or those who wanted to see something new from us. I came to release my album with the thought that I should return to music as fast as possible for those who had waited so long.”

You chose to go for rock in your first solo album. Did you always want to try rock?

“I grew up listening to rock. It wasn′t deep or hard core, but I liked to imitate N.EX.T, Yoon Do Hyun Band and Seo Taijisunbaenim (senior). I′ve often performed rock at our concerts or for my solo project singles. Still, I didn′t know I would be releasing my first album in the rock genre.”

You co-produced the album with Sinawi′s vocalist Kim Bada. How did you come to work together?

“I happened to get to know about Kim Bada sunbaenim by chance. I asked him [to work with me] because he′s the vocalist of a legendary band, and because I heard his songs are really good. He first wrote One Kiss for me, and I could only say that it was ′great′. I loved that it incorporated sessions, melodies and a mood that can′t be found in other Korean songs, and I was satisfied at how it embodied Sinawi′s strong sounds and yet gave off a dreamy feeling.”

Kim Bada wrote not only ′One Kiss′, but also ′Mine′, the promotional single of the album. (JYJ3 Note: Kim Bada compose One Kiss and Mine and Jaejoong wrote the lyrics)

“[Kim] Junsu kept asking me what I thought about singing in a style like that of Maze, a single I sang in Japan. I asked sunbaenim for a song with a quicker beat, he said ′I got it′, and then he came up with Mine in just two days. He was the best.”

You must′ve felt very satisfied with the results.

“It was great. It was so great. I still can′t believe it′s my voice singing in One Kiss (Laugh).”

How did Junsu and [Park] Yoo Chun react to your rock album?

“Yoo Chun was preparing for his media day event in China when One Kiss was released. I sent him the song and he said he had some drinks after listening to it. I guess it′s a song that makes you feel like drinking (Laugh).”

“Junsu really liked Mine. He listened to it and kept saying, ′Oh~ Good, good, good.′ Like I said, Junsu kept pushing for a similar feeling so he said it was great because it turned out the way he wanted it to be.”

You must have been concerned about choosing rock music. The public seems to feel awkward when idol singers try new things, especially rock.

“That′s what′s hard about it. If you think of it in terms of acting, an actor who′s going to appear in a comedy piece when he′s mostly appeared in romances all this time will feel scared. It would feel the same for a singer, who′s only sung for dance or ballad pieces, to go for rock. Because I was scared, I aimed for rock and didn′t try to include any other styles that I′m good at. I just wanted to put my voice on traditional rock pieces.”

What do you mean, you didn′t try to include any other styles that you′re good at?

“Since I would be putting a lot of things at stake with my new attempt, it felt I should do something I′m good at too in order to make it less daunting. Still, I felt that would make the music more difficult to understand, so I just sang in traditional rock. I especially asked for help from those who work in the rock genre.”

How did Kim Bada say you should react to any criticisms about your being an idol trying out rock?

“When idol group members try out a new area, big fans of the genre often welcome them with prejudice. I was worried because I was part of a group too, and I think he knew. He tried to set my emotions and vocals straight so that they would fit traditional rock. I mostly sing in a fragile voice, but I shouted and sang in a solid, husky voice for One Kiss. He told me it′s good to try new vocal methods outside of the original K-Pop methods.”

How did you come to choose the five tracks included in your album?

“The songs that I wrote before were more R&B and K-Pop, so I wanted help from rock musicians this time. I wanted a lot of help from those who wrote songs and were also members of rock bands. I wanted to learn more about rock and get to understand it more. I composed Healing for Myself and All Alone myself, but for the others I used tracks from Jeon Hae Sung sunbaenim and Kim Bada sunbaenim.”

How did you come to choose ′Mine′ as your promotional single?

“I thought a lot about it. I thought One Kiss would appeal more to the public, but Mine was unique. The melody and session fit perfectly as the promotional single of my first rock-themed solo album. I chose Mine because I needed a music video for the promotional single, and I thought the video needed to make a big impact.”

[interview Part II] JYJ's Kim Jaejoong Writes His Lyrics Based on True Stories

You wrote the lyrics for all five songs in your album, ′One Kiss′, ′Mine′, ′Healing for Myself′, ′You Fill Me Up′ and ′All Alone′. Are they all about your own experiences?

“Healing for Myself, which has lyrics that speak of longing for a lost love, is based on a true story (Laugh). I′ve written about my own relationships ever since I started writing lyrics for TVXQ (DBSK), and my fans know that I′ve been using my own experiences for my lyrics. Of course, I need to have experienced love to be able to write about it (Laugh). I do sometimes write lyrics based on films, though.”

Then did you recently break up with your girlfriend, as the lyrics say? When were you last in a relationship?

“I won′t answer this question (Laugh).”

It seems the lyrics for ′Mine′ contain a message stronger than one of love. They seem very abstract too.

“Like I felt I needed to write more symbolical messages of love when I heard One Kiss, I felt the same for Mine. Since it′s hard core rock I felt it wouldn′t fit with sweet lyrics that say things like ′I love you.′ The expressive methods used in Mineare often used in Japan, in which I draw out the pains that I had to endure, and use my own love stories. The confidence expressed in Mine is also my own.”

It′s been 10 years since your debut. When do you feel the most that it′s been a long time?

“I recently listened to the songs I′ve sung since my debut, and they added up to be about 130-140 songs. I felt then that it′s already been 10 years, and that I′ve worked hard.”

Your music must have changed a lot from how it was back then.

“I feel embarrassed (Laugh). I actually think I′m still very young. My mind and my looks both seem very young. I think so, and then I watch videos of when I was younger, and I realize just how much younger I was back then. I used to think four or five years ago that I was all grown up actually (Laugh).”

Before, whenever you released a song it would immediately go to the top of the charts, but these days your songs aren′t able to rank that high.

“I care more for the album rather than the ranks of my singles. It would be great to have them land on the top, and it would be nice to have more people listen to our songs at least through audio since we can′t perform on TV… but I think all musicians usually have less opportunities to show their performances.”

What do you think about the recent MBC ′Infinity Challenge′ issue on the music charts, or any other songs released by comedians?

“I know there′s a controversy on the issue, but you can′t really blame anyone. Sometimes people look down at songs performed on variety shows even though they were produced with sincerity. Still, songs from popular stars make it easily to the tops of charts everywhere in the world. In Japan, even a song sung by a five year old lands on no. 1. I believe it′s natural for the [Infinity Challenge] songs to reach the top because they were sung by some of the most popular people in Korea.”

You′ll be holding your concert from January 26-27. I heard it will be a new attempt, with three parts including a mini concert and fanmeeting.

“It will be comprised of an event in which I can express myself, one in which I can do what my fans want from me and a small live performance. It′s an event and concert produced to bring together the three parts on one stage. I always say when I hold a concert that I want to relate to and converse with fans, but I always end up showing off about myself instead of actually conversing with the audience. This time, though, I have parts in which fans can participate, and I′ll be accepting requests. I also believe there will be a part in which fans can come up onstage to join in a game.”

What are your plans for 2013?

“What we know for now is that JYJ will be releasing an album. I think it′s time we had another world tour. If I have time, I want to act again too. I have many things I want to do.”

Do you have any plans to go on a world tour like Junsu?

“I really want to, but I don′t have enough songs and I don′t think I′ll be able to hold a world tour alone yet. That′s why I was jealous of Junsu. It′s a great thing, that the member of a group can tour the world alone.”

Do you feel happy?

“I′m very happy, but there are many moments in which I′m not. I think it′s because I have to meet a lot of people. I live a life that no one else can live for me, but I also have to go through what no one else has gone through. I guess the conclusion is that I am happy (Laugh).”

Kim Jaejoong has released photos from his rehearsal ahead of his first solo concert.
On the 25th, Kim Jaejoong released photos on JYJ’s official Facebook page of his rehearsal with a band for his concert that was held on the 26th. In the released photos, Kim Jaejoong can be seen rehearsing with a rock band consisting of drums, a bass guitar, a keyboard, an electric guitar, and an acoustic guitar.
His agency stated, “Kim Jaejoong is busy rehearsing for his live performance with a band. The upcoming concert, which has been receiving a positive response for being a mini concert that focuses on conversing and connecting with the fans, will feature a live band to go with Kim Jaejoong’s performances.”
They also said, “As his latest album centers around the rock genre, Kim Jaejoong decided to stand on stage for the third part of his concert with a live band, and is rehearing with them at this moment.”
Band members who participated in the project stated, “The rock band will be small and will focus on emphasizing his vocal talent. We focused a lot on the guitar sound of the band to emulate the traditional rock sound of Kim Jaejoong’s ‘MINE’ and ‘One Kiss’. We were surprised by Kim Jaejoong’s transformation into a rocker. Though this was our first rehearsal, he understands music very well and adapts quickly to change. His live skills are amazing, as expected from a singer who has held countless live concerts in Japan.”
Kim Jaejoong’s special performance ‘Your, My and Mine’ was held at the Ilsan KINTEX on the 26th and 27th, and all 16,000 seats have been sold out. Kim Jaejoong sang tracks from his first mini album.

JaeJoong reveals the reason why he doesn't use the name "Hero"



Kim Jaejoong, the emotional and talented vocalist of JYJ and the actor who has appeared both on TV and on the big screen, is taking on a new challenge as a solo singer.

Trying out a new genre that he hasn’t sung before, Kim Jaejoong collaborated with Kim Bada to create a song that carries the traditional rock genre with a unique color that accentuates his powerful vocal talent.

Putting all the emotions and untold stories of the past ten years as a singer and actor into the lyrics of his first solo mini album, Kim Jaejoong  is full of anticipation for the new challenge he faces.

There’s a negative view on idols pursuing a musical career in the rock genre. This is one of the reasons why Moon Hee Joon had so many anti-fans when he began pursuing a solo career after H.O.T disbanded.

“I took those negative views into consideration. Because rock is a completely different genre from the styles that I’ve sung till now, I tried really hard to get rid of the habits I’d formed over the years, and I learned how to sing and express my emotions in the traditional form of rock.”

Though he was nervous about taking on a new genre, he was determined to overcome any difficulties and succeed. Instead of an excessive transformation, he worked hard to absorb the traditional form of rock and thanks to the help of his fellow musicians, he was able to successfully create an album.

“When I first chose rock as my preferred genre and set out to make an album, I didn’t think I’d be working with such great seniors who directed me and wrote songs for me. I received such great help and I was able to learn so much about the genre I’ve always liked.”

Kim Jaejoong’s collaboration with Sinawi’s vocal Kim Bada has become a new learning experience and discovery for him. From the genre’s specific vocalization to changing his singing style, Kim Jaejoong had to go through an intensive training procedure to get to where he is now.

“It was really hard to change my singing style. If you listen to my mini album and compare the voice from the first track and the last, doesn’t it sound like two different people? ‘One Kiss’ has a lot of high notes, so I felt like I was in another world (laughter). It felt like I was back to being a rookie, but I didn’t throw away my original style to fit the rock genre, I just worked hard to find a way of changing my style slightly to go with the genre.”

Kim Jaejoong participated in the song- and lyric-writing process of his entire album. Kim Jaejoong wrote down all the emotions and hidden stories of his life as a singer and actor in the lyrics of his songs and showcased his extraordinary talent yet again.

“I tend to write lyrics pretty quickly. It might have taken me a while if I was writing something where I had to create a story, like in a novel, but since most lyrics aren’t that embellished, I write them pretty quickly. It took me around 15 to 20 minutes to write the lyrics for ‘I’ll Protect You’ from the ‘Protect the Boss’ OST and ‘Even When I’m Alive, It Feels Like a Dream’ from the Dr. Jin OST. But it took me three days to write the lyrics of ‘One Kiss’. I think that’s the longest time it’s taken me to write lyrics.”

The music video of ‘MINE’, the title song of Kim Jaejoong’s mini album, as left a deep impression on many for its use of top-quality production equipment and intense visuals. Kim Jaejoong starts the music video with a mysterious and innocent image, moves on to being chained down and in pain, and finally transforms into a surreal character, perfecting a bone-chilling image in each scene and mixing in a grotesque edge to his music video with outfits from the famous designer Song Hae Myong.

“I asked the director to get the theme of the music video from the lyrics of the song, and he came back to me the next day with a variety of concepts that we implemented in the music video. It felt as though he had done a lot of research on me beforehand. We stayed up for two nights to film the music video, and it came out to be very artistic and I’m personally extremely satisfied with the end product.”

What reaction did the members of JYJ, who are famous for their strong friendship, have to Kim Jaejoong’s solo album? When asked this question, Kim Jaejoong gave a content smile.

“In Yoochun’s case, he listened to ‘One Kiss’ for the first time in China and said, ‘I feel like having a drink right now. This song is really good. If I said that I liked it better than Junsu’s ‘Tarantallegra’, he’d start sulking at me, right?’ Yoochun has always preferred emotional songs over dance tracks, and I think that’s why he felt like having a drink when he heard that song.”

“Junsu really liked my title song ‘MINE’. In the past, when we were active in Japan, I once released a single called ‘Maze’. Ever since then, Junsu’s been telling me, ‘If you ever release a solo album, you have to do a rock song. You have to do a song with a strong, rhythmic beat.’”

Though he is a member of JYJ, Kim Junsu has kept his title of ‘Xia(h)’, the name he used when he was a member of TVXQ, whenever he partakes in any solo activities. But Kim Jaejoong is cautious about using the name ‘Hero’.

“Junsu must really like ‘Xia’. (laughter) Junsu believes that when he’s a musical actor, the name ‘Kim Junsu’ fits him best, and when he’s a singer, the name ‘Xia’ fits him best. And I think I agree with him on that. For me, because the title ‘Hero’ is a name I used when the five of us used to be together, I’ve decided to refrain from using it as much as possible now.”

Kim Jaejoong chose ‘fans’ as the biggest reason for the release of his solo album. He knows that since creating JYJ and starting his individual activities, he’s been more focused on his acting than his singing career.

“I’m sure that there are people who like JYJ as a group, and people who like the vocals of each member. I didn’t want to make those people wait too long, so I wanted to bring my music to them quickly.”

Through his upcoming activities for his album, Kim Jaejoong plans to visit his international fans as well. Though there aren’t many tracks on his album, this is his first solo album and he is in discussions with his agency for the possibilities of a solo world tour in the future.

As JYJ have won their lawsuit against the Japanese agency AVEX, many are predicting Kim Jaejoong to pursue solo activities in Japan, but he has a different idea.

“Personally, I’d like for all three members of JYJ to be together when he resume our activities in Japan. I think it’s our duty to go together as a trio and perform for the fans who have been silently waiting for us in Japan for the past four years. As for the possibilities of a world tour, I’d like to go on one if my songs are able to live up to the high-quality that a world tour performance demands.”

Kim Jaejoong, who has started off the year as a singer, plans to continue his acting career as well, on TV and on the big screen. With JYJ activities scheduled as well, 2013 is set to be a very special year for his fans.

# You were extremely busy last year and it feels like every day is full of happiness for you. Do you have any concerns?
“I don’t know. I think my biggest concern is my health. I haven’t been able to sleep that much these past couple of days because of insomnia. I tried to pretty myself up for today, but I think I look a little haggard.” (Not at all!! He was the epitome of a cool city guy, with sophistication flowing from him from head to toe!)

# You’ve released your first album. How did the other members react to your choice of genre?
“(Park) Yoochun said that he felt like having a drink after listening to ‘One Kiss’. He said, ‘I need to drink today’, and that it is a song that calls for a drink… isn’t that great? There are songs you listen to when you’re sad and are hoping to be comforted, and there are songs you listen to because you want to feel sadder. And to say that it’s a song that calls for a drink… I really like that. (Kim) Junsu really liked ‘Mine’.”

# We want to know what you do as ‘a regular guy’ when you aren’t working.
“My hobbies disappear when Winter comes. (haha) I really like riding my bike, so I go biking every day when the weather’s nice. I rode my bike so much and used my pelvis so much that I suffered from an inflamed pelvis. I also like running on the treadmill at the gym. I had to go to the hospital because I had hurt my pelvis from all that biking and running. I haven’t ridden my bike since then, but my pelvis is still inflamed. So I don’t run or bike that much anymore. When I ride my bike, I’ll go all the way to the Han River and back, and I always feel like I’m going to die on the way back. (laughter)”

# Hong Seok Chun recently posted a tweet of support for you on his personal Twitter account and became a hot topic for it. You have such a wide circle of friends.
“I would say that because Seok Chun has such a wide circle of friends, I should be seen as just one of his personal connections rather than him being my friend. The people I’m friends with all know Seok Chun too. I saw his words of support and I was so grateful that I went to see him as soon as I was done with work.”

# You’ve been showcasing ‘great visuals’ in your music video and in your album jacket. What’s your secret?
“I don’t know. Maybe it’s because I’m doing everything I can to do everything I could possibly do as someone in their late twenties. (laughter) I feel like I’m using up all the energy I possibly could before I turn 30. I need to work harder!!”

#Kim Jaejoong. Are you really ‘happy’ these days?
“I’d say I’m half and half. There are times when I’m really happy, but there are moments when it gets to unbearable that I can’t believe emotions like that could possibly exist. I have a life that others can’t experience, so I have to experience things that no one else can. But…. I’m… happy.”

Kim Jaejoong revealed the reason why there’s no ‘Thanks to’ in his solo album.
We met with Kim Jaejoong, who recently released his solo album ‘I’, at a cafe in Gwanghwamun for an interview. There were many people who helped him in the process of becoming a rocker, and he must have many people who he’s thankful to since this is his first solo album, but he didn’t include them in his album.
His response was short and strong, “I’m going to do it when the next JYJ album is released.” He continued to add, “I should have written a ‘Thanks to’  since this is my first solo album. I have so many people I’m thankful to, but I worried that people’s feelings would get hurt if I accidentally left someone out. If this was a JYJ album, Kim Junsu or Park Yoochun would have mentioned them, even if I actually did forget someone..”
Regarding the members’ response to his solo album ‘I’, Kim Jaejoong said, “Junsu likes ‘Mine’ and Yoochun likes ‘One Kiss’.” He also dropped a bomb(!) when he said, “Yoochun recently went to China, and he said that when he heard ‘One Kiss’, he immediately thought, ‘I need a drink right now.’ It seems like he enjoys binge drinking.”

JYJ's Kim Jaejoong to Begin His Asia Tour Next Month

Kim Jaejoong(27 years old) who recently released his first solo album "I" will begin his Asian tour soon.
 
His agency C-JES Entertainment announced on January 24th that the artist will be holding his solo concert titled "Your, My and Mine" in KINTEX, Ilsan on the 26th and the 27th of this month, marking the beginning of his Asian tour.

Kim's agency said that they decided to plan the Asia tour after his songs topped the iTunes rock charts of 9 different countries.

Kim Jaejoong will be performing an unreleased song, the songs from his solo album and Lim Jaebum's hit song "For You."
He will be performing these and many of his all-time favorites with his band.
 
His agency added that the unreleased song is a dance number which will please the fans, and that Jaejoong is busier than ever practicing with the band and also fine tuning his dance moves.

During a recent interview with a media outlet, JYJ‘s Jaejoong opened up about his opinions on songs from MBC “Infinity Challenge” taking over various music charts. He was asked, “Many argue that comedian the songs comedian Park Myung Soo wrote on MBC ‘Infinity Challenge’ have taken over music charts unjustly and this has become a very controversial issue. What’s your opinion on this matter?”

Jaejoong answered, “I understand that it is controversial, but I don’t think it is a matter that one could tell someone else what to do or what not to do. I’m sure Park Myung Soo wrote those songs with sincerity and genuine passion, but many people might have taken it as a joke since the songs were introduced on a variety TV show. However, it is natural that songs sung by popular celebrities are ranked highly on music charts.”

He added, “It’s a common phenomenon not only in Korea, but also internationally. In Japan, a 5-year-old child releases songs as well as comedians and top music charts. Members of ‘Infinity Challenge’ are the best and most popular celebrities. I am not surprised to see songs sung and written by them ranked highly on music charts.” 

Recently on MBC “Infinity Challenge,” comedian Park Myung Soo became a singer-songwriter. Songs he wrote were sung and performed by fellow members of “Infinity Challenge” and once these songs were introduced on air, they soon topped various music charts. Many singers and music producers were not happy to see such phenomenon, arguing that songs produced by Park Myung Soo are of poor quality and large broadcasting companies are now taking over music industry, too. Korean Entertainment Producers’ Association released an official statement regarding this happening, arguing that broadcasting companies’ influences on the music industry and marketplace could be very harmful with their lack of quality-control and in the end, affect K-pop’s international popularity negatively.

Meanwhile, Jaejoong released his very first solo mini album “Mine” after 10 years since his debut. He will be holding his first solo independent concert “Your, My and Mine” in Ilsan, Korea on January 26 and 27.

JYJ’s Kim Jae Joong recently released his first solo mini album “Mine” on January 17 to the joy of his many loyal fans. He had a chance to hold a short interview with SBS E! Lets see what he has to say about his experiences in the music industry so far!

# This album is full of rock flavor. It’s surprising to think that an idol group member would go with a rock album for the first solo album.
Jaejoong: “Ever since I was young, I enjoyed listening to and singing along with rock songs. I wouldn’t say I was deeply immersed in it, but I did listen to it often as I grew up. Even when I was promoting as a group or at concerts, or even during project albums, I would sing a rock song. However, even I was surprised that I would release a rock album. (Laugh)”

# What were the members reactions to your pursuit of rock?
Jaejoong: “Yoochun said that he drank alcohol when he heard ‘One Kiss.’ He said, ‘I have to drink some today’ and mentioned that the song calls one to have a drink.. Isn’t that good? There are songs one would listen to to be comforted when one is sad, but there are also times when one wants to listen to sadder songs. To think that this song calls one to have a drink… I’m really happy. Junsu says that he really likes ‘Mine.’”

# It’s already been 10 years since you’ve been in the industry. How do you feel?
Jaejoong: “To be honest, I don’t really feel it. Before, I would think that I would have achieved a lot after 10 years, but now I think whether 10 years is really a long time for a celebrity. To be honest, I listened to my debut album last night before I went to sleep. There really has been a lot of changes. Also, I didn’t know exactly how many Korean and Japanese albums I had, but it’s much more than I thought. I realize then that 10 years did pass by.”

# Yoochun’s the only member who hasn’t released a solo album.
Jaejoong: “If Yoochun releases an album, I will definitely try to help. But, he composes better than me. He’s a genius- a genius. I think that he writes the best songs out of the group. It’s just that he doesn’t write much, but he has a lot of talent. He composes for a hobby, but when he writes one song, it turns out to be a really good song. And just like with language where one starts to forget after practice, even if we all don’t practice with the same intensity, he retains a lot of the language. He’s the type that doesn’t forget easily, but also picks things up easily.

# Are you happy right now?
Jaejoong: “I’m half-half. I have times when I’m really happy, but there are also times when things are unbelievably terrible. That’s life. I have a life that not everyone can have, so I also have experiences that no one have experienced. But still… I’m happy.”

JYJ’s Kim Jae-joong wants to be a rocker

JYJ member Kim Jae-joong, 27, is trying to transform himself after 10 years in the business. He is making inroads into the world of rock with the mini album “I,” his first solo work.

Kim says he wrote all the lyrics, and so far reaction isn’t bad. Sales reached 60,000 copies in the week since release, according to C-Jes Entertainment.

It’s too early to tell if Kim will succeed in the genre, but he may just be the messenger needed to lead young pop fans over to rock music.

The JoongAng Ilbo recently sat down with Kim. Here are some excerpts from the interview:

Q. You must remember that Moon Hee-jun suffered harsh criticism when he first entered the rock scene an as idol band member in the early 2000s. [Moon was the leader of H.O.T., a pioneering K-pop group.] Aren’t you worried that something similar might happen?

A. I have always wanted to try hard rock, though I was never a maniac about it. I have loved and eagerly listened to Korean rock bands such as N.EX.T and YB from a young age.

I was able to release a good album thanks to Kim Ba-da, the vocalist of renowned rock band Sinawe. [Kim composed the title song and the song “One Kiss” in the mini album.] He made efforts to ensure that the music was authentic hard rock and carried some meaning.

And I have changed my vocal style to be in accordance with the hard sounds of the album.

While “One Kiss” and “Mine” are hard rock music, the songs you composed - “Healing for Myself” and “All Alone” - are close to rock ballad. Why?

In fact, I was not confident that I would be able to compose good songs in the hard rock genre. So I got help from Kim Ba-da, who is a natural-born rocker to the bone. As for the song I composed, I added some rock on the guitar and drum sessions. Still, I’m afraid that there is a big gap between the two hard rock and rock ballad songs. It could have been better if I added one or two more songs that are in the middle.

What was the most difficult piece?

I had to think a lot about the lyrics. Writing them for “One Kiss” was certainly the hardest. Kim Ba-da requested that the song’s lyrics be simple and sensible but at the same time give an image of something majestic and immense. It was really difficult.

Are you trying to break your reputation as an idol singer?

No. If I wanted to break the image, I wouldn’t have done the make-up, hair and accessories.

I don’t want to stray too far the image that my fans have loved from the very start. I think it would be a discourtesy to people who like my image if I say “I don’t like this visual any longer” or “I want to abandon this visual.”

Pop-star Kim Jae-joong’s album tops in Japan and Taiwan

Korean idol group JYJ member Kim Jae-joong’s first solo album topped Japanese and Taiwanese music chart, his agency said.

C-JeS Entertainment announced on Monday that Kim’s EP album titled “I” ranked No. 1 on both “Five Music," the biggest Asian music chart in Taiwan, and Japan’s “Shinseido” weekly album chart.

The new album includes the title track “Mine,” an intense rock single, as well as Kim’s original composition “All Alone.”

“Kim’s album held first place on both domestic and overseas sales charts in two weeks,” the agency said. “The album has sold quickly in Japanese music stores and some of them reported being short on supply.”

The pop star previously held concerts dubbed “Your, My and Mine” on Jan. 26-27 to some 16,000 fans.

Kim Jae-joong’s rock impresses fans

Kim Jae-joong’s transformation from idol singer to rocker has met with resounding success throughout Asia.

The album, titled “I” and released on Jan. 17, has managed to top charts in both Taiwan and Japan, not to mention doing well at home.

It topped Taiwan’s Five Music’s Korean and Japanese music chart and at the same time triumphed on Japan’s Shinseido weekly chart.

Meanwhile at Tower Records in Japan, the music retailer has gone so far as to provide a display unit just to showcase Kim’s first solo album.

After 10 years of being a pin-up idol singer, Kim made the risky move of crossing over to rock.

Although still a member of the popular K-pop trio JYJ, Kim wants to be known as a rocker in his own right when active as a soloist.

He wrote the lyrics to the six tracks on the album but did recruit the help of veteran rocker Kim Ba-da, the vocalist of the group Sinawe. The somber teaser images for the album shocked many.
