Review extravaganza time!

I know: Already? It feels like just the other day I was killing myself to corral all my thoughts in coherent fashion in a monster review of 2011′s dramas, and already it’s time to lose sleep wrangling my thoughts together for 2012. Time sure flies when you’re having fun, or old. Guess which one I am?

These days I shy away from blanket statements like “This was an awesome year” or “This was a terrible year.” Dramaland has been putting out so much material that all the nuance gets sucked out of a flattening statement like that. If anything, 2012 was the year it overflowed with variety—so yes, there were terrible shows, and there were awesome shows, and there were shows every step in between. But thanks to the explosion of cable programming—aided by the launching of not one, not two, but four new cable stations boasting big drama lineups—there was just about something for everyone.

Dr. Jin OST – Song Seung-heon – “마지막 사랑” (Last Love) [ Download ]

Yeah, that was look on my face too—a little horrified, a little deadened inside—while watching the whole thing. I’m still not sure why I did. Maybe it was human nature rearing its ugly rubbernecking head, where you see a train wreck and need to know all the gory details.

Nowhere in dramaland was the premise-versus-execution quandary more apparent than in Dr. Jin. Especially considering that it had an existing template of how to execute it properly. It’s like taking tracing paper to a drawing of a tree and coming away with a mutant cat. There’s a well-produced, well-received source drama right there; you couldn’t manage a half-decent facsimile?

Under this production team, no. The directors bear the brunt of the blame here, proving that Dr. Jin was a failure of realization, not conception. In theory, we could have gotten quite the interesting historical-fusion melding as the modern doc struggles with ethical questions of whether he should let people die to let history run its course, or to interfere because he took an oath to save lives. (In practice, our hero was a hard-headed dolt who seemed surprised every time he realized that messing with history was perhaps inadvisable. But did it anyway. And then got upset when all was not well. You dolt.) From a genre standpoint, Dr. Jin offered up a fresh take in the rather cluttered field of medical dramas by forcing our hero to MacGuyver his way through the Joseon era.

The directors seemed determined to outdo themselves on the gross-out scale, pouring loving attention and intimate detail into shots of vomit, pus, and diarrhea. And syphilis boils, and crude abdominal surgery, and you get the point. You’d think they could put the same care into character consistency or a romance that didn’t defy logic. (She has the same face, ergo she is a parallel existence? And because I love one version, I automatically love the other because of the transitive property of love?) The acting ranged from acceptable to terrible… yet you can hardly hold the cast accountable when nothing else made sense.

Worst of all, perhaps, was that even if the individual flaws were overlooked (and that would be one major blind spot), the drama would still fall abysmally flat, because as a whole it’s just as much a mess as its parts are. Tonally unsure of itself, Dr. Jin had some broadly comedic moments where you were almost sure they meant to be funny, but then went for weighty political intrigue (which got peppered with farts, ’cause, okay), time-travel-driven existentialism, melodramatic romantic angst, social commentary, and the kitchen sink while we were at it.

This is a textbook failed drama if ever there were one—being that failure came on all levels—and a show really ought not be watchable solely ironically. On the upside, unintentional hilarity is still hilarity. (A gummi bear brain fetus. WTF?)

A lot of goodies coming towards the fans of JYJ! In addition to the group album that Junsu hinted atearlier, it seems Jaejoong will be releasing his first solo mini album!

C-JeS Entertainment revealed the exciting news – “Next year in January, Jaejoong will be releasing a very special solo mini album. Kim Ba Da, previous vocalist of legendary rock group Sinawe, has directly participated in the album, and the album will contain various rock genre songs.

You’ll be able to hear Jaejoong’s husky and rough high notes that you haven’t heard before with JYJ, as well as see his new charms.”Having worked with Jaejoong, Kim Ba Da did not hold back his praise, commenting, “Jaejoong possesses a nature fit for a good rock vocalist. He is also very sincere about music, so because of him, I also developed much affections for this project. Jaejoong’s slightly sexy and glamorous singing style is charming. We decided to make a rock number that will be recognized no matter where we put it out…

For rock music, you have to be able to pull out the stories you’ve kept buried in your heart, and Jaejoong’s composing sense is outstanding. Ok, I admit… I’m cheating with this one because it was released at the end of 2011, but it was so good that it was hard not to include in this list! Comedy and romance are the perfect combo for laughs and happy feelings, and with a great acting cast, not only would it make you happy to watch but also will make you want to spread the happiness around. An example scene is when JaeJoong’s character and his cousin have a “fight on the floor” aka rolling around on the floor like a little kids fight, heh.

Acting Idols CNBLUE to make a Comeback as a Band

This past year, CNBLUE has received much support and recognition through their acting roles in famous dramas. They plan to make a comeback as a band this January.

They recently held their 4th solo concert in Korea and announced then that they would be making a comeback in January.

This past year has been mostly focused on idol groups, however, many believe that the music industry is slowly shifting to solo artists and skilled musicians.

Many are anticipating these top stars comeback next year.

Though the doors to JYJ’s chances of appearing on variety and music programs have opened up, the door sill that blocks them is still sky-high. JYJ’s legal dispute with SM Entertainment has been settled, but no broadcasting companies have made any movement to invite JYJ on their programs.
JYJ fought a long legal battle with SM for three years and four months. The fact that they are ‘Kpop stars’ and ‘former members of TVXQ’ were enough to push them into the spotlight. As producers and writers of broadcasting companies are always searching for controversial topics and fresh faces, one would believe they would be rushing to get JYJ.
A representative of JYJ’s management agency C-JeS Entertainment stated, “We haven’t stopped knocking on the doors (of variety shows and music programs) but we haven’t gotten a single confirmation or a request from any production team,” and “We can’t fathom why.” Their chances look bleak for end-of-the-year music awards shows as well. The representative also stated, “We made enquiries to various music awards shows, with proof of high album sales, and there have been places that have already expressed that they have no intention of inviting JYJ yet again.”
With SM dominating all broadcasting companies, many in the industry wonder if JYJ will ever be able to be truly free to pursue independent activities. One representative stated, “Think of it this way, would JYJ really be able to appear on SBS’ ‘Strong Heart’, a TV show run by SM celebrities and Super Junior?”
Many representatives of the music industry are raising their voices against the ‘walking on eggshells’ approach broadcasting companies take because of their relationship with major entertainment agencies. Though there is no specific instance of coercion, production companies ‘meekly follow’ the wishes of the major entertainment agencies, who have Korea’s hottest celebrities working under their labels, to keep their relationship intact.
A representative of KBS’ variety sector stated, “Though I’m sure JYJ will be able to freely pursue independent activities once they actually start appearing on TV shows, many in the industry just hope it’s not them who has to start it off.” A representative of MBC’s drama sector stated, “Though JYJ have been finding success in sectors where major entertainment agencies have less of an influence, I know for a fact that there were many instances where even these activities were close to failing,” and “I don’t think we could say that JYJ are really ‘free’ now.”

JYJ member Kim Jaejoong encourages voter participation.
A day before the 18th presidential election, Kim Jaejoong on his twitter posted, “For an ideal future, if you think there is a worthy candidate, please exercise your rights as citizens even if it’s cold or you’re too busy.”
Kim Jaejoong posted a similar message “Cast your vote. Please post proof shots” on his twitter when he encouraged the fans to vote for the 19th National Assembly elections last April 11. Many fans voted and posted proof shots on various SNS.

I’m not dating anybody now. I don’t think I can yet. But my fans are very interesting. They say “Kim Jae Joong can date but cannot get married.” However I can’t remain a single guy because I’m the only son in the family.
Q: Who’s the one who influenced you a lot regarding acting? Park Yoochun sunbae and Kim Junsu sunbae? (Laughs) Kidding, the one who really influence me a lot is Ji Sung Hyung. He gave me a lot of help during my first Korean drama. Every time I encounter new dramas, he’ll tell me “When you have decided to take up new dramas, remember to show the script to me” and he’ll check it out. In order to provide me good recommendations and advice, hyung put in a lot of effort.

When Will JYJ Get Together Again?

When will JYJ get back together again?
With the continuation of JYJ’s individual activities, many are curious to see when they will get back together to perform as a group.
C-JeS Entertainment, the management company of JYJ, revealed on the 18th that, “Kim Jaejoong will be releasing a solo mini album next January that contains a variety of rock genre music.” With Kim Junsu holding a solo concert from the 29th till the 31st of this month and Kim Jaejoong releasing a solo album, JYJ’s group activities can’t help but be pushed back to a later date.
With fans waiting for the group’s next album release, C-JeS Entertainment stated, “JYJ will focus on individual activities in the first half of 2013, and will release a new album in the summer of next year.”

Fans of Kim Jaejoong from group JYJ generously donated about $10,000 to improve school meals for institutionalized children in Korea.

The singer’s fan site, “Rough HEROSE Sisters”, donated the money to a campaign against the unfair prices of school meals for children in need. The campaign’s stance is that the school meals provided by the Department of Health and Services are not worth the high price that the institutions are charging their children. Children in institutions are currently paying 1420won (about $1.30) per meal. The fan site collected money from the proceeds of their sales and donated the money under the name “Hero’s Goods.”

Kim Jaejoong will release a mini solo album in January. Kim Ba Da, the vocalist of famed rock group Sinawe, contributed to this rock album.

A representative of C-JES Entertainment said, “Kim Jaejoong will show a side of him that he could not show in JYJ with his husky and rough vocals in the new rock album.

Talking about that fan account I read, the person who had the chance to observed JYJ mentioned our boys are very courteous. Even in a foreign environment, they will always stand up and bow 90 degrees to another artist even if they are not as famous as them. 
Our boys are always courteous and have no airs about them. 
He said Su is thinner than on screen & his legs are very slim. He also said Su has an exquisite & rather small face & his laughter is cute. 
On Jae, he said Jae is very cool and manly and that his skin is also very good. He commented that Jae is totally like a big star! ^__^ 
He said Chun's face is very small, like size of a palm. Chun has broad shoulders, but rather pale like a doll though he speaks very manly. 
Those are the impression of the male worker who happened to work with them for an activity in China. 
There's 1 thing he kept mentioning is that our boys are really close to one another. Off screen they always play & fool ard with each other.
When they have to work, they are all professional and serious. But when on their own (the 3 of them), they'll start to tease one another. 
Mainly is Soulmates teasing Su and he will in turn beat them. LOL 
One funny thing that guy said "Jae is too thin. At the backstage, he kept pulling his pants. His wire & mike kept slipping, his clothes seemed too heavy & inconvenient and his pants kept lowering!"
P/s: Lol baby~~~ but I wanna see! Oops! 

On JaeSu : Jae will always tease Su. Su easily turns red in the face & become violent Su! Hahaha 
Su will be "very high" (his words) in front of Jae. LOL They will also always start singing randomly. Su liked the food the fans prepared for him & when Jae ate anything nice, he will always let Su try too. Once, Su took a bite of a cake and "squeeze" the rest into Jae's mouth. Following that is of coz the usual laughing & hitting! 
Then Chun who's sitting by the side watching them will say something to them and then Su will turn round and start hitting him. XD

On soulmates : They sat tgt going thr pictures of Chun with curly long hair. Jae then gestured something about Chun's hair & Chun laughed. Then Jae purposely messed up Chunnie's hair (LOL) Chun was usually on his earphone & writing something in his notebook. (Composing maybe?) Jae will disturb Chunnie & he lets him. Chun will show Jae what he wrote & then Soulmates will quiet down & discuss about it. 
On ChunSu : Chunnie will find time to disturb Su even when he's usually listening to songs and writing. XD 
Like when Su is having his makeup done, he will take a clip & clipped Su's hair & asked Jae to take picture. 

My guess: So that's where his "hair clip scene in IMY" comes from huh?! Lol Chunnie! 

Chunnie will also search & take something out (like comic book or electronic dictionary) from Su's bag & hide in his own.
Then he will purposely ask Su for it & when Su found out what he did, he will run & hide behind Jae laughing! LOL 

Funny incident at the after party: There was this "Crab Stuffing Little Dumplings" on the table. It seemed like they don't really like it. Jae took a bite and let Chunnie tried. Chunnie ate, then with a sour face asked Su to try which he really did! But after eating, Su stuck out his tongue and start looking for water! LOL

Fans of popular group JYJ member Kim Jaejoong have donated 10.8M KRW(~10K USD) to Beautiful Foundation to improve facilities for children’s school meals.

Last Dec 22 around 2 pm, members of Kim Jaejoong’s fansite ‘Prickly noonas of HEROSE’ went to Beautiful Foundation to donate 10.8M KRW in support of “I Disagree’, a campaign against the unfair prices of school meals for institutionalized children.

“I Disagree” is a campaign that states that the price of school meals provided by the Department of Health and Human Services Advisory to children in need costs less than half of the 3,500 KRW (3.25 USD) budget. The campaign aims for a change in government policy in the future. Currently, the meal is priced at 1,420 KRW (1.32 USD). The proceeds from their sales of fangoods were collected and donated under the name “Hero’s goods” (Hero being Kim Jaejoong’s character).

In particular, this donation was thought of by fans as a sign of support to Kim Jaejoong’s aspiration for an equitable world. We were reminded once again that fans’ love means not only by attending fanmeetings, but also the willingness to share and donate on behalf of their star.
