Guest thunderbolt
PHI is mentioned in the following article: June 19, 2007 Korean film stars cutting own fees By Chang May Choon THE going may be tough, but the kimchi spirit prevails. Enough alarm has been raised about the Korean Wave entering crisis zone due to shrinking film exports and rising costs, and Korean stars are now united in tackling the problem - at their own expense. How? Instead of continuing to demand sky-high acting fees, an increasing number of Korea's A-listers have slashed their own fees to help film-makers cope with the rough times, reported The Chosun Ilbo last week. The trend is for them to accept a lower fee initially, but to ask for a share in the profits if the film makes a killing at the box office. Lee Byung Hun, for one, settled for less than his usual 500 to 600 million won ($800,000 to $960,000) fee for his new movie, the 'oriental Western' action flick The Good The Bad The Weird. He and his co-stars including Jung Woo Sung and Song Kang Ho reportedly channelled a substantial part of their fees back into the cowboy film in the form of investments. Exact figures were not given, but the producers revealed this would help to lower the original budget of 10 billion won by 'at least 1.5 billion won'. More recently, the crew and cast of the new action movie Modern Boy, led by director Jeong Ji Woo, veteran actress Kim Hye Soo (The Red Shoes) and award-winning Park Hae Il (The Host), also announced they would cut their fees. They have settled for a 10 to 30 per cent reduction, which adds up total savings of 2 billion won. The original budget was 8 million won. The film's producer Kwak Shin Ae said: 'We're very grateful for the actors' decision to stick it out with the rest of us. If the production company profits (from the movie), we will definitely reward the actors well.' For his new period film Shingijeon (Rocket Arrows), actor Jeong Jae Yeong (Welcome To Dongmakgol) reportedly invested half of his fees in the movie to help offset the 10 billion won production fee. Also cutting fees are actresses Kim Jung Eun and Moon So Ri in the sports film The Most Glorious Moment Of Our Life, as well as Kim Sun Ah for the film Girl Scout. Perhaps the only unhappy ones are the artiste management companies that will suffer diminished profits. Guest thunderbolt
Some news about PHI's next movie and his co-lead, Kim Hye-soo: November 2, 2007 Glamor Girl Kim Hye-soo Shows Off Period Style The first still photos of the star actress Kim Hye-soo from a new movie called "Modern Boy" helmed by director Jeong Ji-woo have been released. Kim plays Cho Nan-sil in the movie, a 1930s modern girl who wins the heart of Lee Hae-myung, the titular modern boy played by Park Hae-il. Last year, Kim dazzled audiences with her provocatively glamorous fashions as the femme fatale in "The War of Flower," a gambling drama. This year she returns to the screen as a period trendsetter. The stills show Kim wearing the revolutionary fashions of the late 1920s and early 1930s, when the young urban working and middle class -- the mobo/moga or modern boys/girls -- abandoned traditional dress in favor of sharp, spivvy fashions in imitation on the styles of Korean dancer Choi Seung-hee and Hollywood stars Louise Brooks and Colleen Moore. Kim also recorded four songs in three languages for the new movie, after three months of vocal training before the shoot began. "Modern Boy" will be released at the beginning of next year. Guest thunderbolt
January 29, 2008 KIM Hye-soo transforms Modern Boy PARK Hae-il Writer/director JUNG Ji-woo wrapped up filming one of the highly anticipated films of this year: Modern Boy, set during the occupation of Korea by Japan. The titular character is played by PARK Hae-il, a superficial young man who only cares about enjoying the fruits of modernization. Things change when he meets the mysterious and multi-talented character played by KIM Hye-soo. KIM was chosen for the female lead since the character needs to be a very strong woman who has a profound impact on the young man’s life, according to director JUNG’s motivation. KIM has been lavishly praised for her commanding role in Tazza: The High Rollers. With filming finished, Modern Boy is in the final stages after a development process of three years, including a shooting period of almost seven months in numerous locations spread over the Korean peninsula. Expectations are high, since Modern Boy promises strong characters, impressive visuals, an interesting recreation of the time’s fashion and urban landscape, and an original take on the modernization of Korea in a controversial time by director JUNG. JUNG previously helmed the acclaimed Happy End, his feature film debut which screened in the Critics Week Section at the Cannes Film Festival. The film starring CHOI Min-sik and JEON Do-yeon was also a success at the box office. JUNG was also praised for his latest, Blossom Again with KIM Jung-eun in the leading role. PARK Hae-il portrayed the bitter former student activist in The Host. He also starred in last year’s hit Paradise Murdered. He was also praised for his roles in Memories of Murder, and My Mother the Mermaid. Guest thunderbolt
August 28, 2008 'Modern Boy' Opens in October By Lee Hyo-won Staff Reporter Director Jung Ji-woo, center, actor Park Hae-il, left, and Kim Hye-soo pose during the promotional event for “Modern Boy” in a Seoul theater, Wednesday. / Yonhap After six years in the making and a release date postponed by months, Jung Ji-woo's ambitious period drama "Modern Boy," starring hot actors Park Hae-il and Kim Hye-soo, will open in theaters in October. The press gathered to catch the film's first promotional event held Wednesday in a Seoul theater. The critically acclaimed director of "Happy End" (starring "Old Boy" hero Choi Min-sik and "Secret Sunshine" heroine Jeon Do-yeon) brings a dramatic love story set in 1930s Gyeongseong or old Seoul, when Korea was under Japanese colonization (1910-45). With years of pre-production for the period detail, the film also utilizes the most blue screen shoots for computer graphics imagery(CGI) used in a Korean movie. "In trying to recreate the period, I realized how little remains of the past because Korea was so focused on economic development," the director told reporters. The film resurrects via CGI the recently burnt down Sungnyemun and other landmarks. "Unlike the black and white documentaries we're familiar with, 1930s Gyeonseong was a thoroughly modern city, very colorful with neon lights," he said, explaining that while it was a time of tragedy, it was also very dynamic with culture thriving and modernization in full gear. Like recent success "The Good, the Bad, the Weird," which is set in the 1940s, this particular period, which had in the past been the subject of depressing documentaries, becomes a backdrop for crafting rich, exciting drama. "The point here is not making a story about the colonial era but taking a character who could well exist in 2008 and displacing him in the past,'' he said. Park plays the role of a "modern boy," a suave, rich young man who is unaffected by the fact his country was colonized. With his Japanese best friend, he struts around with his fashionable perm and customized linen suits, womanizing while flirting with a civil servant position. One day, however, he becomes mesmerized by a sexy singer/dancer (Kim), and becomes implicated in this mysterious woman's schemes to bomb a building. The reputed male lead from "Rules of Dating" and "Paradise Murdered" said he took a contemporary approach to his character. "I felt rather overwhelmed about playing a character in another time," said the 31-year-old actor. But he understood his character as being today's equivalent of a couture wear sporting hedonist living in the rich neighborhoods of Gangnam (southern Seoul). "He just wants to be happy but was born in the wrong era," he said. It's no surprise that Kim, Korea's ultimate sex symbol, plays a femme fatale. But the 37-year-old actress from "Tazza: The High Rollers" said that sex appeal doesn't define her character, who has at least nine identities from singer and dancer to fashion designer. "She's a very talented woman who lived ahead of her time," she said. Kim sings in Korean, Japanese and English and swings to jazz music. She said the months of preparation were physically enervating yet spiritually invigorating. "It was a life changing experience both personally and professionally," she said with a smile. The screen beauty also revealed that she had been long interested in the film even before she was cast. "I read about the movie in a magazine and was captivated by a photo they used of a singer from the era," she said. Throughout the press conference, Kim and Park did not hesitate to compliment each other. The director added that the film would be worth watching just to see the chemistry between two of the most talented actors in Korea. In theaters Oct. 2. Distributed by CJ Entertainment.
