Cho Jae-hyun, Brings Soul and Passion Back to Theater

chojaehyun.jpg

From the silver screen and television to live theater, actor Cho Jae-hyun has always managed to bring audiences a mesmerizing performance. Once again, he makes headlines with his work and Star Focus gets the details.

It's been a busy year for the actor! He started 2008 as a gifted doctor in the TV drama, "New Heart," and then as a programmer in the play, "Dandelions in the Wind."

"Dandelions in the Wind" will be his last project for the year.

"Dandelions in the Wind" is a part of the "Best Play 2" project. The project is made up of theatrical productions, and it has been successful in breathing life back into the world of theater. "Dandelions" is the tenth and LAST of "Best Play 2."

Cho's true gift as an actor lies in his expressive eyes. During rehearsals, we could see that Cho Jae-hyun had already internalized his character, Ahn Jung-ki. Yet, it wasn't easy, especially because this was a new play by an amateur playwright.

This actor became much more well-known for his work on television and on the big screen, but Cho told us that being back in a theater production was like coming back home... and the crowds loved every minute of his return.

"Thespian" seems to be better-suited for such an actor. His performances are never static, always evolving into something that's new and incredibly unique. It's hard to imagine that he wasn't BORN with this talent, but... he wasn't!

Whatever role he takes on, Cho Jae-hyun leaves such a strong impression with his characters that it's hard to imagine what his TRUE personality is like! Well, what better time to ask than the present?

Cho Jae-hyun always manages to capture peoples' attentions, but when was it that he was able to make his way into their hearts? It was his warm character in the drama, "Snowman," and the role of a loving father in "Piano."

It's not just the acting that he's mastered! Cho Jae-hyun is also blessed with natural leadership skills. He can bring a group of cast members together and help them unite as a team, a single unit. Cho was an actor and individual that people looked up to.

Cho Jae-hyun's LONG overdue return to the stage has the public excited, and the actor is ready to show everyone that he still has what it takes after a two-year hiatus. Watch for him in the play entitled "Dandelions in the Wind."

Just a touch of femininity perfects a villain: actor Cho Jae-hyun

By Shin Hae-in

NISI20090105_0000427819_web.jpg

SEOUL, Jan. 5 (Yonhap) -- To many film buffs outside South Korea, he is known as the "Bad Guy" in director Kim Ki-duk's controversial movie of the same name who sells off the woman he loves to a whorehouse.

But to audiences here, actor Cho Jae-hyun is a man of many faces. Slipping into roles as various as a stepfather full of the spirit of self-sacrifice, a level-headed doctor or a fearful psychopath, he can actually convince audiences that he is all of them.

The 44-year-old actor, often dubbed Korea's own Al Pacino, will meet his movie fans next month via "Marine Boy." This time, he plays the role of an ultimate bad guy who blackmails a former national swimmer to transport drugs via sea.

"As strange as this may sound, I take pleasure in playing the villains," Cho told reporters at the production conference of the movie to be released on Feb. 5. "What is important, though, is not the masculinity, but the one percent of femininity that is hidden in these characters."

Cho, who made his movie debut in 1990 through a supporting role in "Portrait of the Days of Youth," earned the nickname "Kim Ki-duk's man" in 1996 after playing the taciturn macho man in the director's low-budget debut film "Crocodile."

Despite the renowned director's success aboard, which led him to the best director's awards in Venice and Berlin, Kim is considered a maverick in the local film industry and has a hard time drawing more than 100,000 fans to his movies at home. Female viewers are especially less enthusiastic toward Kim's works, which have been criticized for their oppressive depictions of women.

"Gosh, I spent many broke days working with Kim Ki-duk," Cho reminisced with a chuckle. "This movie is treating me well and all actors including me have been at our best. You can count on my words." "Marine Boy," the debut film of director Yoon Jong-seok, is a movie that "involves a lot of battering," actors say.

A former national swimmer (Kim Kang-woo) is forced by a gangster boss (Cho Jae-hyun) to transport dope to Seoul from Japan. "Marine Boy" is a secret code referring to the drug transporter who has to swim across the sea to escape a police dragnet.

Hiding the fact that all marine boys are slaughtered after their missions are complete, the cruel boss played by Cho trains his swimmer to become a hard-hearted transporter as well as a class A assassinator. Things begin to get out of hand, however, when the training goes "too well."

"This is a movie that relies 100 percent on the characters," director Yoon said. "I am especially satisfied with the character that Cho Jae-hyun and I managed to create together. We agreed that there will not be any grandiosity and came up with a somewhat realistic gangster boss."

The partial preview of the movie Monday was too short to tell whether it will succeed in becoming South Korea's next blockbuster, but fans may at least look forward to seeing Cho in the bad guy's clothes again next month.

Gyeonggi Province Aims to Become Film Hub

Gyeonggi Province is stepping up efforts to become a cinematic hub with actor Cho Jae-hyun as its front man. The Gyeonggi Film Council named the top actor as its new chair Thursday to promote filmmaking in the region.

The 44-year-old star of the upcoming film "Marine Boy" accepted his two-year tenure at a ceremony Friday in downtown Seoul. "This is a great honor and I hope the special guests with us today will serve as the council's advisory committee," said the versatile actor, who has appeared in art films such as Im Kwon-taek's "Beyond the Years" and hit TV soaps like "New Heart" (MBC).

Cineastes including directors Im Kwon-taek and Lee Jun-ik and actors Ahn Sung-ki, Choi Bul-am, Kang Soo-yeon, Cha Tae-hyun and Park Si-yeon attended the event. Kim Moon-soo, governor of Gyeonggi Province, passed on the letter of appointment from director Lee Hyun-seung to Cho.

"Gyeonggi Province is very rich; we spend 13 trillion won each year," said the governor, further commenting on the region's wealth of resources, which includes the Peninsula's Western coast, Seoul's satellite cities, farming villages and historical sites dating back to the Goryeo Kingdom (918-1392). "However, 18 of our 31 counties lack a movie theater. We hope to make 2009 Year Zero for turning Gyeonggi Province into the cinematic hub of Asia," he said. The film council, an organization within the Gyeonggi Digital Contents Agency, will expand its conventional role of subsidizing films shot in the area. The governor said it would act as a bridge between cineastes and the region's resources with the possible construction of a film studio.

The endeavor will coincide with forthcoming local projects such as the Universal Studio theme park in Hwaseong and Hallyuwood (Korean entertainment contents-related theme park) in Goyang. Other regional assets include movie libraries in Heyri Art Village, the annual Pucheon (Bucheon) International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan), the largest of its kind in Asia, and Digital Light Project, which aims to provide high-tech movie projectors to various venues.

"Numerous film studios dot the nation, but many of them are poorly managed. We will build a new studio in Gyeonggi Province after careful deliberation," said Cho. The actor, who has proven his business management skills as the programmer/producer of the hit play series ``Yeongeuk Yeoljeon 2'' (A Series of the Best Plays), added that he hopes to vitalize, along with cinema, the theater business in Gyeonggi Province.
