Ye-jin Son to star in “Baekyahaeng” (remake of TBS drama “Byakuyako”)

Posted by luna6 on January 2, 2009

Ye-jin Son rebounded nicely from the horrible film “Open City” and brought people to the theatres with her last film “My Wife Got Married“. That film takes an unusual look at relationships by having Ye-jin Son marrying two men. Following her performance in “My Wife Got Married,” Ye-jin Son is scheduled to star in the new film “Baekyahaeng.” “Baekyahaeng” is based on the 1999 novel “Byakuyako,” by popular Japanese mystery writer Keigo Higashino. In 2006, Japanese television TBS broadcasted their own adaptation of “Byakuyako,” starring Takayuki Yamada (Train Man / Crows Zero) and Haruka Ayase (Cyborg Girl).

What’s known so far about “Baekyahaeng” is that Ye-jin Son will play main character Mi-ho, while co-star Su Ko will play her lifelong friend Yo Han. Acting vet Jong-won Lee will play Seung-jo, a good guy that promises Mi-ho fortune and fame but eventually is used by Mi-ho. The film will be directed by newcomer Shin-woo Park. No word yet on how faithful the script will stay the original novel. The TBS drama, included Takayuki Yamada’s character killing his own father because he slept with Haruka Ayase’s character. In another shocking twist, Haruka Ayase’s character was encouraged to do so by her mother for financial reasons.

Filming for “Baekyahaeng” starts February, 2009.

SonYeJin will be portraying 'Mi Ho' a strong woman full of desires.

I supposed LJW will be somebody to SonYeJin character .. like a husband-to-be.

and KoSoo .. will be protecting her (MiHo) a role as a fugitive.

*still hopes no tragic ending*

[ i cant bear to think for one moment , our darling KoSoo being eliminated in the end  ]

Han Suk-kyu

hansukkyu22a4099edq3.jpg

Han Suk-kyu (b. August 17, 1964) began his career in the early 1990's as a dubbing artist, before being cast in the TV drama Moon Over Seoul. By the late 90s he had become one of the most popular actors in Korea, starring in a series of both highly acclaimed and extremely popular films including Lee Chang-dong's debut film Green Fish, the groundbreaking gangster comedy No. 3, the hugely popular internet romance The Contact, Hur Jin-ho's classic Christmas in August, and the film that officially kicked off Korea's modern-day commercial boom, Kang Je-gyu's Shiri. At this time, Han was receiving a higher guaranteed salary for his films than any other actor (~$350,000 in 1999).

From 1999 until early 2003, however, Han took an extended leave of absence from filmmaking, only appearing occasionally on TV commercials. By the time of his return in the film Double Agent -- a spy film in which he stars with Ko So-young, which was a disappointment at the box-office -- he had lost his status as the most popular actor in the Korean film industry. The following year, his appearance in The Scarlet Letter with now-deceased actress Lee Eun-ju opened well, but failed to make a big impression with audiences.

Han's appearance in Im Sang-soo's political bombshell The President's Last Bang marked an impressive return to form, however, and even if it didn't translate into success at the box office, it showed that Han remained at the top of his form. For his next project Han discards his serious image to play a stay-at-home dad who dresses up as a woman in order to enter a TV quiz show for housewives.

Interview excerpts:

People say that you have benefitted from your voice. Do you think this is true? "I think so. When I first started acting on TV, people criticized me, saying I spoke like a 1960s movie star. Now I know how to control my voice. My experiences as a dubbing artist and a singer in high school taught me pronunciation and better control over the language." [Cine 21, #174, Nov. 3, 1998]

Han Suk-kyu

Hangul: 한석규

Hanja: 韓石圭

Revised Romanization: Han Seok-gyu

Han Suk-kyu (born November 3 1964 in Seoul) is a South Korean actor. While a student at the Film and Theater department of Dongguk University, he sang in an amateur folk rock band. He became a contract voice actor for KBS, before moving on to TV and film acting.

1990 marked his debut in the MBC campus drama Our Paradise. He rose to stardom in The Moon of Seoul (1994), as a charming gigolo from the slums on the road to self-ruin in the City. The series and his character "Hong-shik" have become beloved icons[1] [2] [3], as part of the Korean television's golden era before the advent of Korean wave. The cast also features veterans who are now luminaries in Korean cinema: Na Mun-hee (The Quiet Family), Choi Min-sik (Oldboy) and Baek Yun-shik (Save the Green Planet!).

Until the end of the 20th century, Han headlined films that were critically acclaimed (Green Fish, No. 3) and commercially successful (The Contact, Christmas in August, Shiri -- the latter two making particular impact in Japan, a significant market for Korea.) Although he received all the best scripts during this phase of popularity, there was still a dire need for good scripts in the burgeoning industry. With co-sponsor film magazine Cine 21, he founded the Makdong Script Festival named after his role in Green Fish. The annual contest is now extant over 10 years, with two cash prizes funded by Han. Some winners were eventually produced: the comedy "2424" and the forthcoming "The Aerialist" starring Hwang Jung-min.

Han went into an extended hiatus in 1999, declining several lucrative opportunities with name directors. Among them: Peppermint Candy, Joint Security Area, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (as the father), Oldboy (as the antagonist[4]), and Fulltime Killer (as Andy Lau's friend/foe.)

The break coincided with a surge in new talent and scale of production within the Korean film industry. These and other factors (such as his distance from the media[5][6], his over-exposure in commercials[7], and changing audience preference for a less measured, more explosive acting style) have attempted to explain the lukewarm reception to his comeback. Double Agent had netted one million admission, seen as a failure for a star labeled by the media as "box office guarantee". This was followed by a sizable backlash from netizens and the press, who rushed to bury the co-self-produced spy thriller as the public disgrace of a former golden boy [8][9].

His press and image took further beating in the next two, even more polarizing films, due to the unforeseen tragedy surrounding The Scarlet Letter, and the incendiary political content of The President's Last Bang [10]. Nonetheless, these controversial works screened at Cannes, and were featured in a tribute to the actor at the Austrian FilmAsia festival[11].

In spite of this rocky return to feature films, Han remains highly esteemed by such major directors as Park Chan-wook[12], Lee Jun-ik[13], Kang Woo-suk [14] and Jang Jin [15]. Compared to his peak popularity in the 90s, his work may seem an acquired taste for general audiences, although some cult following ensued for his ultra-sadistic turn in A Bloody Aria.

Han remains well-respected for his distinctive style (a cerebral and intricate minimalism marked by its implosive restraint and integrative effect on ensemble), among major peers: Kim Hye-su[16], Song Kang-ho[17][18][19], Oh Dal-su (especially for their collaboration in Forbidden Quest and A Bloody Aria), Sol Kyung-gu[20], and Choi Min-sik[21] [22].

Known for his distinctive voice and diction[23], Han has been a long-time mentor to Gam Wu-seong[24][25], including coaching the latter's enunciation for his film debut in Marriage is a Crazy Thing. Actors of the younger generation also continue to cite him as an influence; among them: Hwang Jung-min (You Are My Sunshine)[26], Kim Myung-min[27], Kim Ju-hyeok (Blue Swallow), Kim Ji-soo (This Charming Girl)[28], Tsuyoshi Kusanagi (who famously began a second career in Korea after seeing Han in Shiri), Rain, Lee Sung-jae (Barking Dogs Never Bite), TV heartthrob Lee Jin-wook[29], and the current darling of independent films, Im Ji-gyu[30].

In addition to legendary Korean actor Kim Seung-ho, Han has been influenced by Al Pacino, Ken Takakura, Shohei Imamura, The Godfather trilogy, and Hayao Miyazaki. Off-screen, he's known as a family man[31], avid golfer (likens the sport to acting) and voracious reader[32]. He collects animation by Studio Ghibli and desires to join their voice cast one day - as a Korean-speaking character[33].

Since beginning his career with neophyte helmers in the late 1990s, Han continues to help introducing new talents into the industry[34], often turning down more assured projects under seasoned directors. 2006 saw a trio of somewhat offbeat titles[35] that gathered strong to minor box office. Next is a return to his favored genre of the thriller - Eye for an Eye opposite Cha Seung-won on July 30, 2008.

SonYeJin . HanSukKyu . KoSoo, To Assemble In Movie 'Into The White Night'

200901140000171sun48022uk3.jpg

^ photo provided by Cinema Service

Korean cinema queen Son Ye-Jin, Korea's top true actor (referring to someone with acting skill) Han Suk-Kyu, Ko Soo (whose post military activity is being anticipated) will be joining hands in movie "Into The White Night" (directed by Park Shin-Woo, Cinema Service Production).

Son Ye-Jin will play the role "Yoo Mi-Ho" whose only wish is "to be able to run hand in hand with her loved one under the sun". Dued to the tragic fate in the early years, she's only able to bury her sorrow inside her heart. This film's production team said that someone with perfect acting and very appealing eyes is needed to express "sad/sorrowful beauty and inner melanchony" of this character; they feel that Son Ye-Jin is the only actress who meets both of these criterea. As a result, they only wait for Son Ye-Jin even though other actresses expressed their interests in this role.

Actor Han Suk-Kyu originally turned down the offer because he feels burden of playing a detective again. After seeing director Park Shin-Woo's short film "About A Bad Boy" and the movie promo clip of "Into The White Night", he's convinced by the director's directing ability so he decided to appear in this film. He will play detective "Han Dong-Soo".....

Ko Soo plays "Yo-Han" who sacrifices everything for his love "Mi-Ho". Ko Soo had turned down many starring offers after being discharged from military service a year ago. After seeing the script of "Into The White Night", he feels like he's been waiting for such a role all along. He accepted the offer immediately after reading the script, thus ending a 5-year hiatus from the silver screen.

Movie "Into The White Night" is about a blink-of-an-eye mistake leading to a man+woman's tragic fate and their fateful relationship with the detective who pursues them. Filming will begin in February.
