More Korean Crooks Find Safe Havens Abroad

Although the number of Korean suspects at large abroad increases every year, only a handful are extradited to Korea. A Justice Ministry report submitted to Uri Party Rep. Sun Byung-ryol shows the number of suspects who found a safe haven overseas jumped from 797 in 2000 to 983 in 2004. A total of 5,009 suspects fled abroad over the last five years, 642 of them in the first half of this year. But only 26 people or 0.5 percent have been extradited. Sun urged the government to act, saying only nine countries out of 22 countries bound by extradition treaties and 17 that signed criminal and judiciary cooperation agreements sent criminals back to Korea.

Kimchi Culture Could Cure Bird Flu

Among the many miraculous properties attributed to the Korean staple side dish kimchi may be the ability to cure bird flu, Seoul National University scientists say. A research team lead by Prof. Kang Sa-ouk said Tuesday they created a food mixture containing a lactic ferment from kimchi that is effective against the avian flu and sent it to Indonesia, where the virus is rampant. In March, Kang and his team fed an extract of the lactic ferment found in the pickled cabbage dish -- dubbed Leuconostoc kimchii -- to a group of chickens infected with Newcastle Disease, avian flu and other respiratory illnesses. After one week almost all of the chickens had recovered completely. Reports on the study have appeared as far afield as BBC broadcasts and the Wall Street Journal. “Our research team has been distributing feed additives made from the lactic ferment culture fluid to poultry farms across the nation since last August,” Kang said. “There were requests from zoos in Indonesia that had to close down due to the bird flu, so we sent a 400 kg shipment of feed additives made from the culture to each of them last week.” The team also commissioned another group of scientists led by Prof. Mo In-pil of Chungbuk National University to help develop a remedy for bird flu by conducting full-scale experiments of the extract on animals.

Korea’s Fertility Rate Ranks Sixth Lowest in the World

The fertility rate of Korean women is the sixth lowest in the world. According to a 2005 population report issued by the UN Population Fund and the Planned Parenthood Federation of Korea, this year’s fertility rate stood at 1.22 children per woman of childbearing age (15 to 49), considerably lower than the world average of 2.6 children and less than the average in developed countries of 1.57. The average in developing countries was 2.82. Hong Kong had the lowest fertility rate with 0.95 children, followed by Ukraine at 1.13. North Korea's fertility rate was 1.97, suggesting that both Koreas have a problem. The Earth's total population was tabulated at 6,464,700,000. China remained the world’s most populous nation with 1.31 billion inhabitants, closely tailed by India with 1.13 billion. The US was a distant third with 298 million. With 47.8 million residents, South Korea was 25th and North Korea was 47th with 22.5 million. Global life expectancy was estimated at 63.7 years for men and 68.2 years for women. South Korea ranked 30th for men with an average life span of 73.8 years and 19th for women with 81.2 years. Undernourished North Korea placed 100th for men with 60.9 years and 97th for women with 66.8. The average life expectancy in developed countries was estimated to be 72.2 years for men and 79.6 years for women Hong Kong was also the place where men live the longest with 78.9 years, followed by Japan with 78.7, and Sweden with 78.2. For women, Japan ranked top with 85.8 years, followed by Hong Kong with 84.9 and Spain with 83.5. Aids-devastated Swaziland had the shortest life expectancy for both men and women with 31.6 and 31.3 years.

Small Film Captures Asia's Biggest Film Fest

At Asia's largest film event, the Pusan International Film Festival, a low-budget U.S.-Singaporean film has grabbed people’s attention amid the glitz and glamour of larger productions. The movie is about a single mother who is reunited with her father after 20 years because of her blind son. Graham Streeter is an American director with an intimate knowledge of Asia. He lived in Japan for 10 years from the age of 16. But even as he moved onto a career in TV production in the U.S., an Asia sensibility stayed with him. This is evident in his first feature film "Cages," about a blind Singaporean boy who reunites his mother with his grandfather. "It's a story about three generations, about family, about miscommunication and a bond that is created by a young son who is blind. So ironically, not seeing the environment around him, he is able to see the truth in bringing everyone together," Streeter explains. On his first visit to Singapore five years ago, Streeter was struck by the birdcages that are everywhere in the Lion City and spent the next four years researching its culture. The director says the film is an illustration of life and how to free yourself from the cages that you place yourself or allow others to put you in. And few could play a visually-impaired boy better than 10-year-old Dickson Tan, who is blind himself. "When we say someone is disabled we think they are completely disabled, but basically they have different abilities and different strengths,” Streeter says. “I think that this brings to light how we all view someone with disability. Sometimes we are emotionally disabled whereas somebody else is physically disabled. So this kind of points out what is disabled and what is being able to really see what love is all about in family." The film is being screened this week as part of a special program showcasing films of APEC nations. "Cages" will not be representing Streeter's homeland but Singapore, the country most touched by this profound portrayal of its birdsong culture.

The Korean boy band god -- pronounced G-O-D, for groove over dose -- is no more. The group, which captured the hearts of well nigh the entire country after their debut in 1999, at a press conference on Wednesday morning said their upcoming concert series "The Last" will, as the name suggests, be their last, as will their most recent album "Into the Sky", their seventh. The five-member group consisting of Kim Tae-woo, Danny Ahn, Park Joon-hyung, Son Ho-young and Yoon Kye-sang has been plagued by rumors of an impending break-up since the end of 2003. After member Yoon Kye-sang left for Korea's mandatory military service in November last year, the band kept on performing, but last May another member, Son Ho-young, caused controversy when it was thought he would try to use his dual citizenship to dodge the draft. However, Son later announced he will serve. Kim Tae-woo, who passed his medical with flying colors, announced he intends to join up in the same group as band-mate Son, making it impossible for the band to go on. On Oct. 28, god will release their seventh and final album and hold a series of 20 concerts from Nov. 10 to Dec. 11, four times a week from Thursday to Sunday, at Olympic Hall in Seoul Olympic Park. “The fact that all our members are heading off for the Army is definitely the biggest reason that we can't continue, but we also felt that we all just needed a break because we have been running nonstop since our debut,” the group said. “We do not want to use the word ‘break up.’ Even though we can't say when, someday we will get together again to play music.”
