About YouTube Use:

[Part 1]

YouTube and Alphabet (aka "Google") have had problems, are having problems and will have problems (probably forever).  YouTube has changed, is changing and will continue to change to deal with those problems, and for other reasons.  If you are a fan of a K-Pop artist, and you watch that artist's videos on YouTube, you can ignore everything and just watch the video, and that's fine.  The artist benefits from your view, and that will help.  But many fans want to do more, and that can be good or bad.  Mostly, it's good, but if you want to really benefit your favorite artist, it is a good idea to find out what helps and what might be bad.  The most basic activity for a fan beyond watching the video are "Likes", "Dislikes" and "Comments".

[Part 2]

First, "Likes" and "Dislikes" don't do much.  They are a weak "reputation" issue.  The artist and fans might watch the counts and be happy or displeased with them, but that's about all.  Popularity monitoring companies that are concerned with "influence" and "marketability" of an artist might keep an eye on those numbers, but they do not count them highly.  They are not that gullible.  They know that "haters" can come along and feed the "dislikes" disproportionately to make a Star look bad, even for no reason at all.  Total "View" counts are much more serious.  Similarly "Likes" can be boosted by fans.  I have not kept track of whether "Likes" or "Dislikes" are currently limited on YouTube.  On some systems they are limited to 1 per account.  But I think that YouTube has some different limit.

"Comments" on YouTube are also "not generally important" to popularity monitoring companies.  But here again, they can help or hurt reputation.  Poor use of comments by fans can hurt a Star unintentionally.  In case you have not noticed, YouTube default to showing the "Top" comments first.  But what is a "Top" comment?  Actually, the default selection is the comment with the most "activity".  Activity is a combination of "Likes", "Dislikes" and "Replies".  This is where "smart" or "disciplined" fans can really help their favorite stars.

If someone posts a derogatory comment about a star, like saying that the person is "ugly" or "can't sing", and you "Reply" to that comment and say "You have bad ears", that reply gives the original comment more importance, and so it rises to the top of the comments that people will read first.  Is that what you really want?  "Likes" seem to have an effect too.  "Dislikes" might also have an effect, but I am not so sure about that.  I have not seen comments with lots of "dislikes" rising to the top.

[Part 3 -- Last]

YouTube gives the "Owner" of the video some control over the comments.  They can be removed by the owner.  However, the big companies do not seem to monitor the comments, so bad comments seem to stick around.  One thing you can do is to get to know the little menu at the right side of the comment.  There are a set of alerts which bring bad messages to the attention of the "Owner", and I think to "YouTube" as well.  Be careful how you use those alerts.  Don't use them improperly.  If you do, you might be "flagged" yourself.  But for now, I think that it is the best you can do to help the Star.
