Actors Song Kang-ho’s and Lee Byung-hun’s next film “Declare Emergency” (translation) has not been able to start production due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, according to local media outlet Sports Chosun on Monday.

The film’s distribution company Showbox told the outlet that it has “delayed the start of the film’s production due to the outbreak.” The movie was supposed to start shooting this month.

“It’s difficult for us to decide when to go into production as we cannot predict [whether or not the outbreak will subside],” the company said.

As of now, the film’s production has been pushed back to May.

The aviation apocalypse film set on an airplane tells the story of characters in a predicament over where and how to land the aircraft as a virus breaks out on the ground below.

The film garnered a great deal of attention when it was announced that Song would be playing a lead role, especially after his success with director Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite” that reaped trophies from the Cannes Film Festival, the Golden Globes, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards and the Academy Awards.

On top of that, the film is set to be Song’s and Lee’s fourth film together. The two have appeared together in “Joint Security Area” (2000), “The Good. The Bad, The Weird” (2008) and “The Age of Shadows” (2016), all of which were box-office hits.

EBS channel will broadcast a documentary titled "Reviewing 100 Years of Korean Cinema: Korean Cinema in My Life" and spend time looking back at the 100 years of Korean film history.

According to EBS on May 11, the documentary "Reviewing 100 Years of Korean Cinema: Korean Cinema in My Life" will be aired on EBS 1TV at 10:40 pm (KST) May 11 and 18.

"Reviewing 100 Years of Korean Cinema: Korean Cinema in My Life" is a documentary that looks back on the ups and downs of Korean cinema since the first Korean movie "Fight for Justice" was premiered at Dansungsa theater in 1919. The 100-year history with countless difficulties and challenges of Korean cinema will be conveyed directly by more than 20 top directors, actors, and producers of the cinema industry like Im Kwon Taek, Bong Joon Ho, Jeon Do Yeon, Lee Byung Hun, etc.

Part 1 titled "My love my cinema" aired on May 11 will unfold stories about the Korean cinema more interesting than a true movie. The story will begin from the 70s work "Heavenly Homecoming of the Stars" to the masterpiece "Parasite", which received worldwide congratulations for winning awards at both the "Cannes Film Festival" and "Oscars".

The audience can listen to director Bong Joon Ho's backstage stories of "Parasite" and Jeon Do Yeon's talks about difficulties when playing a mother who lost her child in the movie "Secret Sunshine" while she was not married. Besides, actor Lee Byung Hun also reveals concerns about advancing to Hollywood and the potential of Korean cinema in the eyes of current international filmmakers. The living proof of the Korean modern cinema - actor Ahn Sung Ki - will share unique movie stories of the whole Korean cinema industry as well as of himself as a veteran actor.

In part 2 titled "Modern Boy, come to Dansungsa" aired on May 18, the documentary will follow the history of Korean cinema from the first work "Fight for Justice" in 1919 until the peak of the Korean film industry in the 1960s. The viewers will have the opportunity to know more about Korean cinema today through the stories of Korean cinema and the filmmakers who lived through the Japanese occupation. In particular, the typical veteran actor of the 1960s, Shin Young Kyun, will convey interesting stories about the film industry through backstage stories about the time of filming the drama "The Red Scarf", when people have to shot a real gun right next to your face because there hadn't been special filming techniques at that time yet.

Actors Cho Yeo Jeong and Ahn Sung Ki took on the role of narrators for the documentary about the history and behind-the-scenes stories of 100 years of Korean cinema.

Cho Yeo Jeong, the leading actress of the blockbuster "Parasite", will be narrating the first part and veteran actor Ahn Sung Ki with the nickname "living proof of Korean cinema" will take on the narration for part 2. Although actress Cho Yeo Jeong has been active in various fields such as dramas, movies, and variety shows for the past time, this is the first time she does narration. Cho Yeo Jeong, who desired to try on this role, recorded actively, sometimes bright and refreshing, sometimes serious and cautious.

The two parts of the documentary "Reviewing 100 Years of Korean Cinema: Korean Cinema in My Life" looking back at the 100 years of history of Korean cinema with the typical directors and actors will be aired at 10:40 pm (KST) May 11 and 18 on EBS 1TV.

[Review] Birthday

By Darcy Paquet

The Sewol Ferry sinking on April 16, 2014 stands as the biggest collective trauma leveled on South Korean society in the past decade. Of the 304 people killed in the accident, 250 were students and teachers from Danwon High School in Ansan City, who were traveling on a school trip. Not only did the tragedy devastate a community (and the rest of the nation, who watched helplessly on TV as the ship went down in real time), it produced a flood of unanswered questions: Why did the ship sink? Why wasn't a fast and effective rescue operation carried out? Why did the government try to cover up key details about the accident? What should be done to ensure that such an incident will never happen again?

Birthday In the years since, quite a few films and documentaries have been made to grapple with these and other lingering questions. The politics surrounding the incident have grown only more bitter and divided with time. Now, exactly five years after the sinking, the film Birthday has emerged with a very focused objective. Avoiding overt references to politics or to the cause of the sinking, Birthday simply aims to give voice to the grief of the bereaved families.

The plot centers around Jung-il (Sul Kyung-gu), the father of one of the victims, who returns to Korea after years spent running a factory in Vietnam. His return causes a bit of a stir. He needs to be introduced to his young daughter Ye-sul, who doesn't recognize him. It also soon becomes clear that his wife Soon-nam (Jeon Do-yeon) does not want anything to do with him. One only needs to look at Jung-il's face to understand that he is suffering, and haunted by the death of his son. But the process of reconnecting with his family is complicated, and takes time.

Soon-nam, meanwhile, is only barely hanging on. Her son's room remains exactly as it was when he left to go on that school trip. In her community, she sometimes runs into other parents or classmates of the children who died, but for the most part, she tries to avoid them. At this point, a member of a volunteer group arrives and makes a suggestion. Her son's birthday is approaching, and the volunteer offers to organize an event in his memory. It will be a birthday celebration, of a kind, where people who knew him gather to share their stories.

The Korean film industry is known for turning out a lot of tear-jerkers, but that term feels wrong as a description of this film. Debut director Lee Jong-un, who worked on the production team of Secret Sunshine and Poetry by Lee Chang-dong (who serves as a producer on this film), takes a nuanced approach to extremely emotional material. The hugely accomplished leads Sul Kyung-gu and Jeon Do-yeon take care not to exaggerate or embellish the parents' grief. But it's because of this measured approach that the film becomes so devastatingly sad by the end. Watching it is an intense, exhaustive and cathartic experience. Stories abound of strangers bonding in movie theaters over shared packs of Kleenex.

It may be that some viewers, particularly outside of Korea, feel alienated by the raw, communal expressions of grief in the film's final half hour, which depicts the birthday event of the film's title. But they do seem true to life. Director Lee based the script on her own observations while volunteering with bereaved families in the aftermath of the tragedy. In the coming years she became close to many of the families, and also attended events such as the one depicted in Birthday. Such gatherings, it seems, have been effective in helping families cope with their grief, and perhaps this film might serve a similar role, too.

Owners of Best Actor/Actress Awards at "2020 Baeksang Arts Awards" unveiled

C59EBF72-D78A-4DCE-8D10-B945C1D935C6.jpg

The "2020 Baeksang Arts Awards" for the Best Actor/Actress, as known as "Flowers of Baeksang Arts Grand Prize", went to Kang Ha Neul, Kim Hee Ae, Lee Byung Hun, and Jeon Do Yeon.

At the "56th Baeksang Arts Awards" taking place in Kintex, Goyang City, Gyeonggi Province on the afternoon of June 5, Kang Ha Neul and Kim Hee Ae received the Best Actor and Best Actress awards in the television category.

At the awards ceremony, actor Kang Ha Neul of the drama "When the Camellia Blooms" (KBS 2TV) said, "I have nothing better than the seniors nominated along with me, and I feel extremely sorry when one person who has not had much experience like me is here to receive an award that senior Lee Byung Hyun - who has 30-year experience - received last year. Sincerely thank everyone for helping me to gain this award even though I have nothing outstanding. Thank the staff of 'When the Camellia Blooms' and 'Dong Baek' Gong Hyo Jin. The prize makes the mood become happy, but I think it will bring things that shake my heart and spirit. I will try to manage my mind and heart well without thinking of anything else just because I have been given this award. Before I become an excellent actor, I will be a good person."

Having received the Best Actress Award for the TV category for her performance in the drama "The World of the Married" (JTBC), Kim Hee Ae thanked her colleagues, saying, "Initially, when I saw the original work of 'The World of the Married', I found the script so unconventional and bold that I was worried whether it would be successful in Korea or not. Nonetheless, on the contrary, I was surprised that the drama earned so much love and support that we were afraid we couldn't live up to everyone's expectations. Because I'm a fan of candidates Kim Hye Soo, Son Ye Jin, Gong Hyo Jin, and Lee Ji Eun, I still feel happy to be able to see you all even though I didn't win any awards. I hope we'll congratulate each other." In addition, Kim Hee Ae also mentioned the production team of the drama "The World of the Married", saying, "The answers were all written in the script. The content was written very sincerely so I could act comfortably. If it hadn't been for the staff who were always supporting me, I don't think I could have completed the role."

The actress also shared this honor with co-star Park Hae Joon in the drama ''The World of the Married'', "In the drama, he failed as a husband but as an actor, he is a great husband. I hope he will get this award too."

The ''56th Baeksang Arts Awards'' (2020) for Best Actor/ Actress in the film category were awarded to Lee Byung Hun and Jeon Do Yeon. Regarding the movie ''The Man Standing Next'', Lee Byung Hun stated, "Going to the filming set every day, I feel both nervous and happy when seeing the energy and individuality of each actor were harmonized. So I think this award should be given to all actors who worked together excellently." The actor then expressed his special love for his family and audiences, "I would like to thank my wife Lee Min Jung and son Joon Woo - who helped to set my mind at rest and focus on acting. I hope everyone will always be healthy and we can see each other again on the big screen."

Actress Jeon Do Yeon of the movie "Birthday" said, "I was really surprised. I came here to congratulate my colleagues who get the prize, but I did not think I would receive an award. Although 'Birthday' was filmed for a long time, I still feel its newness. This is an unavoidable work. I would like to thank all the staff members and actors for unanimously working together on the movie. Besides, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the viewers. I will come back to the big screen soon to meet everyone with a great movie."

Baeksang awards are thoroughly considered and appraised to reflect all trends, atmosphere, and the flow of times." Director Lee Myung Se - the head of the appraisal board of the Film category - explained, "We have looked at all aspects including the theme and scale of films, judged them fairly and carefully selected to avoid reverse discrimination. For variety shows, entertainers Yoo Jae-suk and Park Na-rae won Best Variety Performer awards for MBC’s “Hangout With You” and “I Live Alone” respectively.

The Best Variety Show award went to TV Chosun’s “Mr. Trot” and Best Educational Show went to EBS’s “Giant Peng TV."

For the rest of the film division, Best Actor and Best Actress awards respectively went to Lee Byung-hun and Jeon Do-yeon from “The Man Standing Next” and “Birthday.” Director Kim Bo-ra was given Best Director for her film “House of Hummingbird” and director Kim Do-young received Best New Director award for her film “Kim Ji- young, Born 1982.” Director Lee Sang-geun received Best Screenplay for his film “Exit.”

From this year, a theater division was established. Director Shin Yoo-chung became the first winner of the Baeksang Play Award for his play “Incendies,” adapted from 2003 production by Wajdi Mouawad. The story follows the journey of twins Jeanne and Simon on a mission given by their mother Nawal on her deathbed. It covers social issues related to war, refugees and women.

Best Actor and Best Actress were respectively given to Baek Seok-kwang from “Wife” and Kim Jung from “Rotterdam.”

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s ceremony was held without an audience. For the third consecutive year, it was hosted by comedian Shin Dong-yup and actors Park Bo-gum and Suzy.

He called out Kim Hee Ae and Kim Hye Soo, whom he is close to, to greet them and finally added, “Jeon Do Yeon and I are from the same class (of college). This year’s Baeksang Arts Awards was particularly a close race. The moment when the winners were announced didn’t come easily. The committee underwent several rounds of discussions and held a vote on the very day of the ceremony.

In the film category, the Grand Prize and the Best Film Award were given to Parasiteand director Bong Joon Ho after competing in good faith. Although the results that Parasite received over the past year have been mesmerizing, they focused more on the fact that the challenges and experiences of director Bong Joon Ho since his debut flourished through Parasite. In the end, the Grand Prize went to director Bong Joon Ho, and Parasite was awarded the Best Film Award.

Lee Byung Hun (The Man Standing Next) competed with Song Kang Ho (Parasite), while Jeon Do Yeon (Birthday) competed with Kim Hee Ae (Moonlit Winter) and Kim So Jin (Another Child) and won by one vote. Park Myung Hoon (Parasite) was selected as the winner of the Best New Actor Award after competing Park Hae Soo (Time to Hunt).

The TV category was as hot as the film category. Until the day of the ceremony, When the Camellia Blooms, Mr. Trot, and Kim Hee Ae competed over the Grand Prize. In the midst of the competition, When the Camellia Blooms was chosen as the winner unanimously. The Best Drama Award went to Hot Stove League.

The Best Actor Award was so fierce that it was said, “no complaints, no matter who wins.” Kang Ha Neul (When the Camellia Blooms) and Nam Goong Min (Hot Stove League) competed for three rounds of evaluation. Eventually, the award went to Kang Ha Neul. The Best Actress Award began as a three-way competition among Kim Hee Ae (The World of the Married), Gong Hyo Jin (When the Camellia Blooms), and Kim Hye Soo (Hyena), and was later narrowed down to Kim Hee Ae and Gong Hyo Jin. In the end, the award was given to Kim Hee Ae. Best New Actor Award was a competition between Ahn Hyo Seop (Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim 2) and Kim Kang Hoon (When the Camellia Blooms), whereas the Best New Actress Award was a showdown between Kim Dami (Itaewon Class) and Jeon Mi Do (Hospital Playlist).

[PICK] ‘Oldboy’ Almost Didn’t Win an Award in Cannes?

By krishkim | Edited by Hwang Hong Sun | Translated by Kim Hoyeun

Cannes Film Festival, one of the world’s top film festivals, has been a new chapter in Korean film history. Everything that happens in the Cannes Festival, from the possibility of getting invited, the reactions at the scene to actually winning the awards, affects the box office success back at home. Since when did the Cannes Film Festival pay attention to Korean films? We look back on the historical moments, focusing on the great achievements of Korean films in the Cannes Film Festival.

In 2000, ‘ChunHyang’ Became the First Korean Film to Get Officially Invited to the Cannes Film Festival

Spoiler

The start of such keen attention was ChunHyang. Korean films have been screened during the festival before, but ChunHyang is the first film to be invited for competition. Directed by Im Kwon Taek, the film reinterpreted the Korean traditional pansori novel Chun Hyang. It was also the debut film of actor Jo Seung Woo. Unfortunately, it failed to win an award, but the fact that Korean film was invited to the Cannes Film Festival was covered in the news, making headlines. Two years later, director Im Kwon Taek won the Best Director Award with Strokes of Fire for the first time in Korean film history.

In 2004, ‘Oldboy’ Wins the Grand Prix

Spoiler

Even the process of being invited to the competition was quite dramatic for Oldboy. Except for some rare exceptional cases, the competition section fo the Cannes Film Festival only invites the World Premiere films. However, Oldboy was already released in Korea. Although it did not meet the requirements to enter the competition, with strong recommendations of officials from the festival who had already watched the film, Oldboy was officially invited to the competition section, not the non-competition section. The reactions to Oldboy, which landed in the Cannes Film Festival after a hard time, was explosive. Rumors that Quentin Tarantino, the jury president of that year, was impressed by the movie surfaced, raising the expectations for the possibility of winning an award. Eventually, Oldboywon the Grand Prix, the second-most prestigious prize of the festival.

In 2006, ‘The Host’ Begins the Bong Joon Ho Craze

Where was the first place that director Bong Joon Ho showcased his “uppercut” ceremony? The answer is right after the screening for The Host, which was invited to the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, has ended. While director Bong Joon Ho was walking up to the stage as he was showered with a standing ovation, he showcased his “uppercut” ceremony as if he was responding to the cheers. When the movie was officially released, the marketing team used his ceremony as part of the promotions. Eventually, the movie became the box office hit, attracting 10 million viewers. After The Host, the Cannes Film Festival has become an indispensable venue for promoting tentpole films that aim for the release in summer. A Hard Day (2014), Train to Busan (2016), and The Spy Gone North(2018), all received positive responses at the Cannes Film Festival and succeeded in domestic box office success.

In 2007, Jeon Do Yeon Became the First Actor to Win an Acting Award at the Cannes Film Festival with ‘Secret Sunshine’

Another good news flew in from the Cannes Film Festival in 2007. The news was that Jeon Do Yeon of Secret Sunshine won the Cannes Best Actress Award. It was the first time in 20 years that a Korean actor won the best actress award at the world’s top three film festivals since Kang Soo Yeon won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress award in 1987 with The Surrogate Womb. Jeon Do Yeon was praised for her splendid portrayal of extreme emotions of anger and loss as she played the mother who lost her son to a kidnapper in Secret Sunshine. It is all the more meaningful in that she was awarded the best actress award, even with the high language and cultural barriers.

In 2013, ‘Safe’ Wins the Short Film Palme d’Or

Safe won the Short Film Palme d’Or at the 66th Cannes Film Festival. It is a 13-minute short film directed by Moon Byung Gon and tells the story of Min Ji, a cashier who exchanges gift certificates at an illegal gambling house, meeting a guest with intent to kill.

In 2019, ‘Parasite’ Is Awarded the Palme d’Or

The fact that Parasite will shock the Cannes Film Festival was detected early on from the official screening. Even when the film was screened, cheers and applause were heard from time to time, and eight minutes of standing ovations were poured out as soon as the film was over. After the screening, the film received high praise and was considered a strong candidate for the Palme d’Or. On a side note, director Alejandro González Iñárritu went up to director Bong Joon Ho during the congratulatory reception and said he felt sorry that he couldn’t give the Cannes Best Actor Award trophy to Song Kang Ho, who was a candidate, because Parasite was awarded the Palme d’Or.

[PICK] Korean Films that Are Famous for Their Ear-Catching Soundtracks

By krishkim | Edited by Hwang Hong Sun | Translated by Kim Hoyeun

Though they are not made specifically for the films, soundtracks that blend in well with the films are loved for a long time along with the films. This article will introduce Korean movies that added unexpected emotions and fun with the ear-catching soundtracks.

The Contact – “A Lover’s concerto”

The romance film The Contact, which revolves around PC communications, received positive reviews for its delicate portrayal of the main characters expressing loneliness online. Also, the soundtrack that delivered the overall tone of the movie was much loved. Especially, Sarah Vaughan’s “A Lover’s concerto” captivated the viewers so much so that the song was played all over the street at the time.

If Sun Rise Up From West – “Early in the morning”

If Sun Rise Up From West is about a professional baseball referee and a star actress falling in love with each other. Like The Contact, it inserted old pop songs as their soundtracks, drawing attention. Cliff Richard’s “Early in the morning” that flowed out when Im Chang Jung and Go So Young shared a kiss in the stadium, wonderfully blended with the scene, leaving behind a strong afterglow.

Who Are You? – “Chow Chow“

Who Are You? is the film that made “Chow Chow,” the song by an indie band Deli Spice, well known. The story is about game developer Hyung Tae and aquarium diver In Joo meeting in the cyber world, healing their pain and dream of falling in new love. The song came out the moment their “cyber love” is continued in reality.

The Classic – “I to You, You to Me”

Spoiler

The Classic, which tells the story of an affectionate love, left an afterglow by placing the K-POP songs in the right places. Among them, the best is Scenery of Riding Bicycle’s “I to You, You to Me” that flowed out in the scene where Son Ye Jin and Jo In Sung ran together in the rain. Ths song harmonized with the lyrical atmosphere of the film so well that it is considered an impressive scene for the perfect use of music.

Architecture 101 – “Etude of Memory”

Architecture 101 drew much attention for using popular songs in the mid-90s as soundtracks. Songs like 015B’s “Love of New Generations,” and Marronnier’s “Cocktail Love” added to the memories of those days. But Exhibition’s “Etude of Memory” left a deep impression to the point where it was called the main theme of the movie. “Etude of Memory” was used as a device to close the distance between awkward Seung Min and Seo Yeon, and to prove that they have always been missing each other when they met 15 years alter.

Nameless Gangster: Rules of Time – “I Heard a Rumor”

Nameless Gangster: Rules of Time was well received for its sharp satire of the 80s and 90s. The best soundtrack is Ham Jung Ah and Yankees’s “I Heard a Rumor.” When Choi Ik Hyun, a customs officer, meets Choi Hyung Bae, the gang leader, and gets on his high horse, the song comes out, adding to the humorous fun of the movie. A remake version of the song sang by Kiha & The Faces was played once again in the ending credit.

The Good, The Bad, The Weird – “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood”

Called the Korean-style western film, The Good, The Bad, The Weird is famous for “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,” which is inserted in the scene where Jung Woo Sung participates in a gun battle and wipes out the Japanese troops. The song is also famous for being inserted in director Quentin Tarantino‘s Kill Bill. In Korea, netizens parodied various versions fo the song (and the scene) after the release of the movie.

On Your Wedding Day – “Smile Again”

On Your Wedding Day, considered a movie that depicted the story of first love realistically, is famous for Rumble Fish’s “Smile Again,” which was released in 2007. In the movie, it is a song that Seung HEe listens to whenever she is facing a hard time, and the song is also used as a device that allows Seung Hee and Woo Yeon to be together. The scene where Kim Young Kwang took over the school’s broadcasting club and passionately sang “Smile Again” has some big laughs.

The movie Beasts Clawing At Straws won the Special Mention at the 22nd Udine Far East Film Festival.

At the 22nd Udine Far East Film Festival, which was held online from June 26 to July 4, Beasts Clawing At Straws won the Special Mention.

Sabrina Baracetti, executive chairman of the Udine Far East Film Festival, said, “Director Kim Yong Hoon’s dazzling debut film Beasts Clawing At Straws is an action thriller full of colorful casts, and a characteristic and unpredictable film. This movie is provocative in terms of its ability to attract and captivate audiences in both blatant and subtle ways.”

On top of that, judges chose the film’s visceral energy and consistent style as the reason for selection, praising the movie.

Beasts Clawing At Straws was released in France on July 8 and ranked sixth in the box office in the first week of its release.

Meanwhile, Beasts Clawing At Straws, starring Jeon Do Yeon, Jeong Woo Sung, Bae Sung Woo, Yoon Yeo Jung, Jeong Man Shik, and Jin Kyung, is a dark crime drama that tells the story of lowlifes slowly gathering around the money bag with different desires.

[Review] Beasts Clawing at Straws

 By Darcy Paquet

It all starts with a Louis Vuitton bag stuffed full of cash. A worker at a small sauna in the seaside city of Pyeongtaek finds it crammed in a locker while cleaning up after hours, after everyone has gone home. His financial situation is too desperate for him to simply hand it over to the police, but on the other hand, he's not quite reckless enough to take it home at once. Instead he puts it in a safe place where nobody else will find it, and considers his next move.

Beasts Clawing at Straws We're familiar with stories of this type, and how the ensuing chain of events are fated to play out. What seems at first like a stroke of incredible good fortune will instead turn out to be quite the opposite. Still, the plot of Beasts Clawing at Straws is anything but predictable, partly because the canvas spreads out to encompass a wide spectrum of characters - a corrupt customs officer, an abused young woman working at a hostess bar, her scheming boss, an illegal immigrant from China, a gangster/loan shark with a mute enforcer, etc. - and partly because the screenplay combines all these cliches together into a complex and ingenious structure.

Based on a novel by Japanese crime writer Keisuke Sone, Beasts Clawing at Straws premiered at the Rotterdam film festival, where it won the Special Jury Award in the Tiger Competition, and then (unfortunately) opened in Korea just as the COVID-19 pandemic started to hit the country with full force. The film might otherwise have reached many viewers both domestically and internationally, because it highlights some of the strengths of contemporary Korean cinema while making the most out of its talented cast.

Popular star Jung Woo-sung, as the customs officer Tae-young, is initially the character who attracts the most attention. Tae-young is clearly not the most honest individual, but his efforts to extract himself from a thorny situation at least earn our sympathy. But it's midway through the film, with the appearance of Jeon Do-yeon as the heartless Yeon-hee that the story really kicks into gear. Cunning, ruthless (as if the shark tattoo weren't enough of a giveaway), she's more than a match for any of the film's other crooks and cheats. Amongst a collection of overall very solid leading and supporting performances, Jeon Do-yeon's is the one that really lights up the screen.

Beasts is director Kim Yong-hun's first feature film, but it's nonetheless a slick commercial package that exudes confidence. Kim is effective at building tension and maintaining it until the very end of the running time. And thankfully, the end is worth waiting for -- not so much because of clever twists lying in wait to throw the viewer off balance, but because everything converges and resolves in a satisfying way.

BEASTS CLAWING AT STRAWS Tears Up French Box Office

by Pierce Conran | Aug 12, 2020

Korean Thriller Earns Special Mention from Udine

272E03A2-4B5C-4967-AC1A-2E39FA065FE1.jpg

The Korean thriller BEASTS CLAWING AT STRAWS was severely affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic, which hit Korea just has it went on release, but its luck has turned around after achieving an impressive box office performance in France, as well as receiving a festival accolade in Italy earlier this summer.

In France, BEASTS CLAWING AT STRAWS opened on July 8 and finished its first weekend at number six on the charts. After three weekends in the top ten, the film has earned USD 563,000 at the French box office. By comparison, the film had a disappointing result in its home market, where it sold just 627,000 tickets (USD 4.56 million), a number that likely would have been higher had its release not fallen around the time of the initial COVID-19 spike that occurred in the wake of ‘Patient 31’.

The highest grossing Korean film in France remains PARASITE, which grossed USD 15.36 million there last year after becoming the first Korean film to ever pick up the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

The debut of director KIM Yong-hun, BEASTS CLAWING AT STRAWS stars JUNG Woo-sung, JEON Do-yeon, BAE Sung-woo and YOUN Yuh-jung in a bloody tale of different characters trying to get their hands on a bag full of money.

In June, the film screened at the Far East Film Festival (FEFF) in Udine, Italy, where it earned a Special Mention from the competition jury. The film originally premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam earlier this year, where it received a Special Jury Award in the Tiger Competition.

Explainer | Korean New Wave cinema: how Shiri, Christmas in August and other movie hits put South Korea on the world map

  • Before the Korean New Wave exploded into life, South Korea’s moviegoers were happy to watch Hollywood films in cinemas and follow American stars
  • The box office success of Shiri in 1999 changed all that, and spawned blockbusters like Silmido, Friend and Taegukgi

The Korean New Wave started a boom in domestic cinema during the late 1990s and early 2000s. It was partly instigated by the phenomenal success of the action thriller Shiri at the local box office in 1999.

Before the New Wave, South Korea did not have a home-grown commercial cinema of note, and viewers preferred to watch Hollywood films in cinemas and follow American stars.

The box office success of Shiri, which was released in 1999, opened the way for a blossoming of commercial films, and introduced the term “Korean blockbuster”, which came to describe big-budget – for Korea – crowd-pleasing movies like Silmido, Friend and Taegukgi, films which quickly smashed box office records in the country.

Audiences who had generally been indifferent to Korean films turned out in force to see such movies, and they were supported by critical acclaim. Korean films became lucrative as a result, and investment poured in. This boosted the careers of a group of directors including Park Chan-wook, E J-yong and Kim Ki-duk, some of whom had already seen success in the late 1990s, and led to the production of a wide range of films that spanned genres.

The film boom meant that talent was needed in front of the cameras, and this led to the establishment of a star system, with stars like Choi Min-sik not only matching, but replacing, US stars as fan favourites. In terms of adulation, the movie stars of the period were a precursor of today’s K-pop stars.

The effects of the New Wave were felt in the art-house sector as well as the commercial sector. A peculiar characteristic of Korean New Wave films was that some were commercial enough to play in cinemas at home but interesting enough to intrigue the foreign art-house audiences at film festivals.

Korean art house films had provoked quiet interest at festivals since the early 1990s, with the works of filmmakers like Park Kwang-su (To the Starry Island) and the country’s towering directorial genius, Im Kwon-taek (Sopyonje and around a hundred others), but they were generally regarded as marginal entries.

Commercially oriented films like E J-Yong’s An Affair had also pleased audiences at specialised Asian film festivals like Italy’s Udine Far East Film Festival.

But in the 2000s, Korean films became the “in thing” at international festivals, and achieved high-profile showings at major festivals like Cannes and Venice.

The success of the Korean New Wave primed international audiences for hallyu, the pop-cultural phenomenon that saw Korean television shows and musical acts become popular at first in Asia, and then all over the world.

What was so special about Shiri?

A quick answer to that would be the box office. Shiri, directed by Jacky Kang Je-gyu, was produced on a budget of around US$5 million but took US$26 million at the box office. Six million people in South Korea went to see it, with 2.4 million of those coming from Seoul. It topped the year-end charts as Korea’s highest-ever grossing film at the time.

In terms of plot, story and direction, Shiri – a mixture of espionage, romance and action – was little more than a competently staged action film. But it touched a chord with Korean viewers.

Korean audiences loved the fact Shiri looked as slick as an American film, and its accomplishments, both in technical and box success terms, evoked a sense of national pride. Koreans suddenly felt that their films could compete with those from the US, and proud audiences flocked to show their support.

Spoiler

Shiri’s story revolves around an undercover North Korean agent who falls in love with the South Korean agent who is trying to capture her.

The movie was groundbreaking in the way that it depicted a North Korean communist as a sensitive human being – a romantic lead, no less, albeit a murderous one. North Koreans had previously been depicted as evil communist stereotypes in South Korean popular culture.

Released during the time of the South’s Sunshine Policy, Shiri played into an optimism that a rapport could be achieved between the South and the North, an idea that was taken further and clarified in Park Chan-wook’s Joint Security Area.

What other New Wave films are important?

Korea had produced a number of lower-budget commercial films like the romantic The Contact before Shiri. These films, which were generally well received at home, paved the way for the post-Shiri surge. A small coterie of international critics, notably Variety’s Asian film expert Derek Elley, had already begun to comment on the slick and professional qualities such films displayed, and had written about them in the Western press.

Critics at home and abroad were quick to identify a new style of Korean film, noting strong commercial appeal and the directors’ propensity to mix genres – for instance, combining horror with a high school drama, or gangsters with comedy. The films also made use of tight narrative structures reminiscent of American movies, even though they were uniquely Korean in content and attitude.

Below are some of the New Wave films that created waves.

Spoiler

Lee Mi-sook (left) and Lee Jung-jae in a still from An Affair (1998). Photo: Handout

An Affair (1998)

Falling somewhere between a doomed romance in the manner of Douglas Sirk and a weepy television drama, An Affair marked the debut of director E J-Yong and the breakthrough of leading man Lee Jung-jae.

Veteran actress Lee Mi-sook plays a woman who falls in love with her younger sister’s dishy fiancé. The way the woman courageously takes control of her own destiny struck a chord with female viewers at home.

Christmas in August (1998)

Director Hur Jin-ho stood slightly outside the nascent New Wave scene, and this touching – and, of course, tragic – romance was considered a bit different at the time. Full of sensitivity, and compared to Francois Truffaut films by critics, it has been an enduringly popular film and has gained a cult-like following. The movie set actor Han Suk-kyu on the road to becoming a big star.

Peppermint Candy (1999)

Spoiler

Perhaps the best work by novelist-turned director Lee Chang-dong, this unrelenting drama shows how peer pressure and indoctrination can pervert even the most sensitive soul. The acting by Sol Kyung-gu and Lee’s direction are superb. One of the best Korean films of the 1990s.

Happy End (1999)

Spoiler

Brutal violence played a part in many Korean New Wave films, and it provided the twist in this movie by Jung Ji-woo, which begins as a typical romance before heading into psychodrama territory.

Lies (1999)

Spoiler

Art-house director Jang Sung-woo’s story about a sadomasochistic relationship between an older man and a young girl fails on all levels, but its racy subject matter still made it a talking point among critics and audiences when it premiered at the Busan International Film Festival.

The director was praised for challenging conservative sexual norms, showing the risk-taking approach of some of the New Wavers.

Il Mare (2000)

Spoiler

A cute romance seemingly influenced by the work of Japanese director Shunji Iwai, Il Mare tells of two lovers who communicate across time via letters posted in an old postbox. Tragedy ensues, of course.

The movie brought actress and former model Jun Ji-hyun to the attention of movie audiences, and shows the tone of the lighter efforts of the New Wave. It was popular enough to spawn a Hollywood remake.

Joint Security Area (2000)

Spoiler

Park Chan-wook’s film deals with the friendship that arises between two South Korean border guards and their counterparts in North Korea.

A well-judged drama that develops into a fully-fledged tragedy, the movie dared to say that, beneath the politics, communist citizens from the North weren’t any different to those from the South. Another box-office smash in Korea.

Friend (2001)

Spoiler

This big-budget gangster/coming-of-age drama owed a debt to Hong Kong gangster films, yakuza films, and Martin Scorsese’s work, and its potent mixture of harsh violence and sentimentality are common characteristics of the Korean New Wave.

By the time Friend was released, audiences were judging Korean films as “well made”, something that reflected the public’s feelings about Korean-made products in general.

My Sassy Girl (2001)

Spoiler

Jun Ji-hyun, in her breakout film, plays a gutsy young girl who puts an admirer in the shape of Chae Tae-hyun through his paces in a romantic comedy which pushes all the right buttons. The character’s independent spirit played well with female audiences.

Sympathy for Mr Vengeance (2002)

Spoiler

Uncompromising to the point of nastiness, this unpleasant sortie through some warped minds wasn’t much liked in Korea due to the excessive violence.

Director Park Chan-wook refined the revenge theme for his masterpiece Oldboy here. New Wave actress Bae Doona gives a typically idiosyncratic performance.

Taegukgi (2004)

Spoiler

Jacky Kang Je-gyu’s blockbusting follow up to Shiri showed how the New Wave directors used the Korean war as a backdrop for spectacular entertainment rather than political propaganda, appealing to a younger generation of viewers who had not lived through it.

Viewers also admired the high-class production values.

How did the films become so successful internationally?

Cinematic new waves must be genuine outpourings of talent to succeed and sustain themselves, and that was certainly true of the Korean New Wave. But matters were helped internationally by a skilful publicity organisation in the form of the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) and a powerful way of disseminating information, in the form of the newly established Busan (then called Pusan) International Film Festival.

KOFIC acted as a one-stop shop for those interested in Korean films at festivals, and instead of just focusing on foreign distributors, it actively courted international film critics.

Spoiler

8A086AA4-4DB4-488B-B81D-F3AA04945E82.jpg

Song Kang-ho in a scene from Joint Security Area (2000). Photo: Handout

Busan quickly became the venue to promote Korean films, and foreign critics were treated like royalty in its first years – they were provided with their own personal full-time guides to the city and given unlimited access to the filmmakers.

The openness and efficiency of the two organisations played a major part in disseminating news of the new cinematic wave abroad. The rest, as they say, is history.

[PICK] Films that Flaunt Stellar Ensembles

by krishkim | Edited by Hong Hyun Jung | Translated by Kim Hoyeun

It’s been a while since the star-packed roster became a new trend in Korean cinema. Unlike how one or two stars led the plot, now, several actors imprint their individualities and fill the play more richly and colorfully. From the audiences’ point of view, we can enjoy both the pleasure of seeing “star actors” and the fun of watching a movie. Let’s check out a total of 8 films, ranging from movies that showed rather disappointing results to movies that became a box office hit.

Beasts Clawing at Straws (2019)

Based on Keisuke Son’s novel, the movie is about the characters in desperate situations and their clashes surrounding a questionable money bag. It is a crime drama with a black comedy about a group of people blinded by desire and become hardened to blood or tears. Jeon Do Yeon, Jung Woo Sung, Youn Yuh Jung, Bae Seong Woo, Jin Kyung, Jung Man Sik, Shin Hyun Bin and Jung Ga Ram paint a terrible irony of clashing into unexpected situations as they try to seize the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

1987: When the Day Comes (2017)

Spoiler

Set in 1987, the film captures the chain of events that led up to a huge roar triggered by the death of a student protester. It is based on the true story of the unlawful interrogation and death of a student activist named Park Jong Chul that ultimately prompted the June Democratic Uprising in Korea, and starts as a cold thriller and heads towards a heart-breaking story. And the actors who took part in filmizing the critical event in modern history are simply outstanding. With Kim Yoon Seok, who turned into a ruthless commissioner Park Cheo Won, in the center, Ha Jung Woo, Yoo Hae Jin, Kim Tae Ri, Park Hee Soon, Lee Hee Joon, Jo Woo Jin, Sol Kyung Gu, Gang Dong Won and Moon So Ri (in voice only) vividly performed the moment of 1987 as if they were running a relay.

Juror 8 (2018)

Spoiler

The movie was inspired by South Korea’s first jury trial. The story of ordinary people being chosen as jurors and seek out the truth of a murder case through evidence, testimony, and confessions is unfolded quite speedily. Moon So Ri plays a presiding judge who always goes by the book, while Park Hyung Sik becomes a jury number 8 and drives the nation’s first jury trial into an unexpected direction with 7 other jurors played by Yoon Gyung Ho, Kim Hong Pa, Jo Han Chul, Kim Mi Kyung, Seo Jeong Yeon, Baek Soo Jang, Cho Soo Hyang.

The Thieves (2012)

Spoiler

389A51E8-61F7-4A78-8C08-B45911274700.jpg

This movie follows Korean and Chinese professional thieves joining forces to pinch a $20 million diamond from an impenetrable casino vault. Directed by The Big Swindle and Tazza: The High Rollers director Choi Dong Hoon, this slick caper flick unfolds a thrilling drama with colorful attractions of conspiracy, betrayal and mixed desires in the colorful criminal world. And the cast lineup certainly wields its dignity. From Kim Yoon Seok and Kim Hye Soo, who worked with Director Choi in his previous project, to Lee Jung Jae, Jun Ji Hyun, Kim Soo Hyun, Kim Hae Sook, Simon Yam, Angelica Lee and Kwok Cheung Tsang transform into characteristic thieves.

The Face Reader (2013)

Spoiler

Credit: Showbox

During the Joseon period, when the King’s position is at stake, a disgraced nobleman with a gift for reading faces becomes enmeshed in a power struggle as he tries to alter the fate of Joseon. It combines Korean fortune-telling traditions of reading faces with historical events to create an intriguing story. Along with its unique narrative, the cast packed with A-list stars made headlines. Song Kang Ho and Lee Jong Suk become father and son, and on top of that, Jo Jung Suk joins as brother-in-law, adding to the fun. Lee Jung Jae, Kim Hye Soo and Baek Yoon Sik each play ambitious Grand Prince Suyang, entrancing gisaeng (Joseon’s courtesan) Yun Hong, and Kim Jongseo who has to protect the young King, and take part in dragging Nae Gyeong (Song Kang Ho) into a power struggle.

Secret Zoo (2019)

Spoiler

The story begins when a lawyer who is stuck in a dead-end temp position is given a special job to revitalize a failing zoo. The absurd plot of a lawyer and zookeepers disguise themselves as animals and experience wildlife on the other side of the fence in order to save an endangered zoo is unraveled with cute humor. Ahn Jae Hong, Kang So Ra, Park Yeong Gyu, Kim Sung Oh and Jeon Yeo Been deliver a pleasant laugh with fantastic chemistry even in the difficult situation of having to act in the masks of polar bears, lions, giraffes, gorillas and giant sloths, respectively.

Intimate Strangers (2018)

Spoiler

5613A24B-A01C-42BA-BB45-B1FFE0E76B5A.jpg

Friends meet for the first time in a long time and play a game of sharing the texts and calls they received that ultimately reveal each other’s secrets. Even though the story takes place in a limited space, fresh materials and unpredictable developments create a high immersion level, and the actors certainly show dazzling prowess. Yoo Hae Jin, Yum Jung Ah, Cho Jin Woong, Kim Ji Soo, Lee Seo Jin, Song Ha Yoon and Yoon Kyung Ho flawlessly become friends who start to feel more like strangers as they desperately try to hide their own untoward secrets. Lee Soon Jae, Ra Mi Ran, Jo Jung Suk and Jin Seon Kyu make special appearances as characters who cause embarrassing moments for the characters.

Parasite (2019)

Spoiler

It’s a tragicomedy in which families from two opposite ends of wealth distribution fall into unexpected situations when they are unintentionally bridged. The movie completes the portrait of modern people living in an era of polarization, showcasing the originality of every character, from the Kim family who are all either working low-paying temporary jobs or unemployed, and the wealthy Park family, to long-time housekeeper Moon Gwang who is driven to the edge and Geun Sae who has been secretly living in the basement. The chemistry between the actors who portray a story that spreads out of control is by far the best. Song Kang Ho, Choi Woo Shik, Park So Dam and Jang Hye Jin become a “real” family, while Cho Yeo Jeong and Lee Sun Kyun realistically portray the power couple that steps outside of the already existing dichotomous thinking. Lee Jung Eun and Park Myung Hoon, who bring about a shocking twist, also cast a heavy presence.
