Movie stars cross over to small screen

With the COVID-19 pandemic bringing film production to a standstill and canceling cinematic releases, a growing number of talented movie stars are crossing over to the small screen.

These days, premium streaming services are numerous and accessible. More and more TV series are better produced with bigger budgets. Thanks to the popularity of Netflix, there is a whole new platform for actors to bring their talent to.

Actor Ha Jung-woo has been confirmed to appear in the Netflix original series "Suriname." This marks the actor's return to television 14 years after the MBC drama series "H.I.T." The crime series will be the television debut of filmmaker Yoon Jong-bin, who has collaborated with Ha in hit films including "Beastie Boys" (2008) and "Kundo: Age of the Rampant" (2014).

Based on a true story, it revolves around a man who rose to become a drug lord in Suriname, a former Portuguese colony on the northern coast of South America.

Hwang Jung-min, who will also take on the lead role in "Suriname," returned after eight years to the small screen in the JTBC drama series "Hush" that is currently airing.

Choi Min-sik, well-known for his role in the 2003 film "Oldboy" and 2014 film "Roaring Currents," is most likely to star in the drama series "Casino" (working title). If the deal is finalized, this would be his first time to be featured in a drama series in 24 years since MBC's "Love and Separation" (1997). "Casino" is written and directed by Kang Yun-sung of the 2017 crime action film "The Outlaws."

"The actor is positively reviewing the offer as he's always had a strong desire to participate in a project that tells longer stories which delve deeper into characters and have interesting subject matter and themes," the actor's agency C-Jes Entertainment said in a statement.

Cannes-winning actress Jeon Do-yeon will return in the drama series "No Longer Human" (working title) five years after starring in tvN's "Good Wife." Directed by Hur Jin-ho, whose works include "Christmas in August" (1998) and "One Fine Spring Day" (2001), the series will tell the story of a middle-aged ghostwriter who feels lost and empty with her lack of achievements in life.

Experts said the occurrence of movie stars flocking to the small screen is largely attributable to a rise in diverse and inclusive content in the TV industry.

"Film directors have flocked to the small screen in advance, bringing cinematic elements to TV. Movie stars are following in their footprints. Thanks to the popularity of OTT platforms like Netflix that are able to invest big budgets into original content, veteran actors are now driven by the content itself and are not limited to movies," film critic Youn Sung-eun said.

Silver screen stars rush to small screen amid protracted pandemic

SEOUL, Feb. 19 (Yonhap) -- As the protracted novel coronavirus pandemic has affected the South Korean film industry and accelerated a platform shift throughout, big-name movie stars and filmmakers are wading into the small screen.

Choi Min-sik, who gained international fame for the Cannes-winning thriller "Oldboy" (2003), will star in a TV series titled "Casino," whose detailed cast and production schedule have not yet been revealed.  It is Choi's first TV project in 24 years since his last soap opera "Love and Separation" in 1997, while director Kang Yoon-sung will also make his small screen debut after creating the hit crime action film "The Outlaws" (2017).  Choi is one of the most successful silver screen stars in South Korea, having a number of box office hits under his belt, including "The Admiral: Roaring Currents," which attracted a record 17.6 million moviegoers.

Jeon Do-yeon, who won the best actress prize at the 2007 Cannes film festival for her performance in the drama film "Secret Sunshine," will also return to the K-drama scene after five years following "The Good Wife" in 2016.  She will take a lead role in the upcoming drama "Disqualified as a Human" to be aired in the second half of this year on JTBC.  It is also the first TV project of director Hur Jin-ho, who is famous for melodrama films like "One Fine Spring Day" (2001) and "Christmas in August" (1998).

Prolific actor Ha Jung-woo will go on a rare outing to the small screen in 14 years with the Netflix original "Surinam," along with Hwang Jung-min, who recently wrapped up his TV project "Hush." Ha's last TV show was the crime drama "H.I.T" in 2007.  Renowned filmmaker Yoon Jong-bin, who directed "The Spy Gone North" (2018) and "Kundo: Age of the Rampant" (2014), will be in charge of the six-episode blockbuster project.

Rising silver screen stars Yoo Ah-in and Park Jung-min have teamed up with "Train to Busan" (2016) director Yeon Sang-ho for the Netflix-funded series "Hellbound," expected to be released later this year.

Actress Jeon Jong-seo, who made an impressive debut with Lee Chang-dong's "Burning" (2018), will take a role in the Korean adaptation of the Spanish Netflix original "Money Heist."

This year's unprecedented rush of movie stars and film directors came as the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic has hit the film industry throughout 2020. Releases of numerous films have been put off, and productions of big-budget projects have been suspended.

At the same time, the changing landscape of the media industry has been easing the barrier between the big and small screens, stemming from the emergence of new platforms like Netflix.

The production value and scope of television have been rising thanks to the fierce competition in the streaming industry led by Netflix, which has been increasing investment into the Korean show business.

Many star actors also found it better to expose themselves to viewers around the world by appearing in a popular Netflix series than in a film available only in Korea, according to industry experts.

Celebs to return to small screen this year

By Nam Ji-eun, staff reporter | Feb.17, 2021

As the Korean film industry shrinks due to the COVID-19 pandemic, big-name stars and directors turn to TV dramas

“Stars are coming!” The line is a parody of “Tiger Is Coming,” the song by Leenalchi that became a viral hit online.  The line is also a prophecy, and one that fans of Korean drama are likely to hum throughout the year. In fact, quite a few movie stars are coming to television screens.  Both those who have juggled films and dramas and those who have focused on cinema have opted to star in dramas this year. Their decisions seem to be motivated both by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and by the growth of video streaming services.

Choi Min-sik, Ha Jung-woo, Koo Kyo-hwan and Jeon Jong-seo set to grace the small screen

The question is how well these actors’ cinematic star power will translate on the small screen.

Choi Min-sik, an actor who regularly draws huge audiences to Korean theaters, will appear in his first drama in 24 years. “Casino,” set in the titular gambling establishment, tells the story of a man who’s had his share of ups and downs. (The channel that will broadcast the show hasn’t been announced yet.). As it happens, Choi cut his teeth on television dramas. He first got noticed in the 1990 drama “Ambitious Times” and rose to stardom in “The Moon of Seoul” (1994). But he has focused on films since shooting his last drama “Love and Parting” (1997).  So why is Choi returning to dramas? “For a while now I’ve been craving a show with a good theme and good material that I could take my time on,” he explained.

Ha Jung-woo and Hwang Jung-min will be starring in “Suriname,” on Netflix. The last drama Ha appeared in was “Hit” on MBC, 14 years ago. The show is based on the true story of a Korean who becomes a drug lord in the South American country of Suriname.

Drama watchers will also be getting their first taste of two actors thought to represent the future of the Korean film industry: Jeon Jong-seo and Koo Kyo-hwan.  Jeon Jong-seo was catapulted to fame when she played the lead in “Burning,” a 2018 film by Lee Chang-dong.  Koo Kyo-hwan debuted in the short film “Boys” (2008), but he made a big splash with his memorable performance in last year’s film “Peninsula.”  Jeon will be appearing in a Korean remake of “Money Heist” (original Spanish title: “La casa de papel”), an original Netflix drama made in Spain. In the drama, a brilliant strategist and a team of thieves with unique skills stage a heist, leading to an unprecedented hostage situation.  Koo will star in “D.P.,” an original Netflix drama adapted from a webtoon by Kim Bo-tong. He plays a private in the military police who joins a team charged with arresting a deserter, but soon finds himself in a confusing situation. The original webtoon created a stir with its realistic depiction of brutality and human rights issues in the military.

Jun Ji-hyun, Song Hye-kyo, Go Hyun-jung and Lee Jung-jae are among the stars returning from hiatus

A surprising number of stars who’d straddled the fence between the silver and small screens, or who’d been taking some time off, are rushing into TV productions.  Song Hye-kyo will be starring in “The Glory” (channel TBD), her first TV series in the three years since “Encounter” (2018). This is also the first revenge drama by screenwriter Kim Eun-sook, who typically writes romantic comedies. In the series, Song plays a teacher who’s plotting revenge for the violence she suffered at school.  Jeon Do-yeon will be appearing on the JTBC show “Disqualified from Being Human,” alongside Ryu Jun-yeol.  Lee Jung-jae will be returning to the small screen with “Round Six,” a Netflix show about a game with 45.6 billion won (US$41.17 million) in prize money, while Go Hyun-jung will make her return with “Someone Like You,” on JTBC.  Jun Ji-hyun will appear on tvN in the mystery series “Cliffhanger,” written by Kim Eun-hee and produced by Lee Eung-bok. This will be Jun’s first TV show in the five years since “Legend of the Blue Sea” (2016). She plays a park ranger who rescues people in distress on Mount Jiri.  Song Joong-ki stars in “Vincenzo,” a series that kicks off on Feb. 20 on tvN, as the eponymous lawyer for the Italian mafia who comes to Korea to betray his organization.

What’s bringing big-ticket stars and directors to TV dramas?

It’s unusual for so many big-name stars to appear in television series at the same time. Industry sources say the biggest reason is that Korea’s film industry has shrunk.  The industry took a big hit following the outbreak of COVID-19 last year. Many films’ release dates had to be pushed back, and as countries closed their doors, production was halted on films that were supposed to be shot overseas.

Another appealing factor for big stars is a transformation of the television production process. Streaming services typically film episodes well in advance and have heftier budgets.  The number one reason that big-name stars have shied away from TV dramas is because of the just-in-time shooting schedule of shows that often felt like live broadcasts.  But more recently, deep-pocketed producers such as Netflix have started shooting episodes with more time to spare. That has led to high-quality television dramas that could give some films a run for their money.

“Netflix invested huge sums of money into ‘Kingdom,’ shot it in advance, and has released it around the world. When dramas are moving that direction, there’s no reason for film stars to stay aloof,” a source at one management company said.

The changing times have also affected directors’ choices.  “Disqualified from Being Human” is the first drama to be directed by Hur Jin-ho, the man behind the romance “Christmas in August” (1998). And “Suriname” is the first TV series taken on by Yoon Jong-bin, who directed “Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time” (2012).  Other film directors trying their hand at TV shows are Hwang Dong-hyuk (“Silenced”), who is directing “Round Six,” and Kang Yoon-sung (“The Outlaws”), who is directing “Casino.”

With Netflix making more original series, production budgets have ballooned. “Suriname” will be shot for 40 billion won (US$39.12 million), “Cliffhanger” for 30 billion won (US$27.09 million) and “Vincenzo” for 20 billion won (US$18.06 million).

“It’s nice to see so many film stars in TV dramas. That shows how much Korean dramas have grown in quality and how much the ecosystem has stabilized,” said Yun Seok-jin, a professor of Korean literature at Chungnam National University.

“But this is no longer a time when audiences can be bought off with star power. The important thing is the script, so this is a chance to see how good stars are at recognizing a good script,” Yun said.

Top movie stars choose small screen amid COVID-19

By Song Seung-hyun | Mar 2, 2021

More and more top Korean movie stars are opting for TV dramas mainly due to the prolonged difficult situation the local film industry has been going through since COVID-19 broke out early last year.

Not only movie stars that occasionally have been making the switch to TV shows, but also those who had been appearing only on the big screen for years are making the switch.

In December last year, veteran actor Hwang Jung-min, star of multiple megahit films like “Ode to My Father” and ”Veteran,” which each attracted more than 10 million viewers here, surprised fans with the decision to star in JTBC drama “Hush.”

Before starring in this human drama, Hwang’s latest TV appearance was around eight years ago in cable drama series “Korean Peninsula.”

“Hush,” which aired from Dec. 11 to Feb. 6, centered on the challenges that Korean reporters face. Hwang played Han Jun-hyuk, a long-time reporter who spends more time playing pool than doing his work.

7E507083-56DF-465D-9EF7-EABA03CDFC43.jpg

Scene from JTBC’s “Hush” starring Hwang Jung-min (JTBC)

Hwang will also appear on upcoming Netflix original series “Suriname,” along with another prolific actor Ha Jung-woo, who has three megahit films with more than 10 million viewers -- “Assassination” and two flicks in the “Along With the God” series. Ha‘s latest TV appearance was in crime drama “H.I.T” back in 2007.

Cannes-winning best actress Jeon Do-yeon will also star in the upcoming JTBC drama series “Disqualified as a Human.”

It has been around five years since Jeon last appeared on the small screen, as the main protagonist of tvN’s “The Good Wife” in 2016.

Jeon will play the role of ghostwriter Bu-jung, while co-star Ryu Jun-yeol will play the role of Kang-jae, who runs a company that organizes people to take on different roles for money. The story revolves around interactions between the two at life’s edge.

“Disqualified as a Human” will also be director Hur Jin-ho’s small screen debut. Hur is known for directing popular films such as “Christmas in August” and “The Last Princess.” Hit romantic movie “Architecture 101” writer Kim Ji-hye penned the script.

Choi Min-sik, who gained international fame for his role in Cannes-winning thriller “Oldboy” (2003), will star in the TV series “Casino” which will be directed by Kang Yoon-sung.

Choi’s new drama is aiming to begin airing before the end of this year.

Director Kang is known for directing the hit crime action film ”The Outlaws“ (2017). He, like Hur, does not have any experience directing TV dramas.

According to movie industry insiders, the growth of global streaming platforms like Netflix, which produces original high-budget and quality series like zombie-thriller “Kingdom,” has also led Korean movie stars to consider making the switch, along with the shrinking local movie market.

However, some local entertainment industry insiders question whether this new trend of casting big names will last for long, as it does not always guarantee a show’s success. The 16-episode drama series “Hush” starring Hwang failed to attract a wide viewer base, as its highest viewership was the 3.4 percent recorded for its first episode, according to data from Nielsen Korea.

Veteran actor Youn Yuh-jung, 73, opened a new chapter in Korean cinema by becoming the first actor to win the best supporting actress prize at the 93rd Academy Awards on Monday for her role in “Minari.”

She portrays an unconventional Korean grandma Soon-ja who comes to America to look after her two grandkids while Jacob (Steven Yeun) and Monica are (Han Ye-ri) are out working to pursue the American dream in Arkansas.

With the Oscar trophy, Youn has bagged more than 40 trophies at diverse international film awards including the British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards and the US Screen Actors Guild Awards.

The Oscar-winning Youn joins four Korean female actors who have won acting awards at prestigious international film festivals. No Korean male actor has won a prize at the three major international film festivals.

In 1987, actor Kang Soo-yeon made history by becoming the first Korean to win the best actress award at the Venice International Film Festival for her role in “The Surrogate Woman” by director Im Kwon-taek. She was also the first Asian to win the award.

Veteran actor Moon So-ri won the Marcello Mastroianni award at 2002 Venice Film Festival for playing a woman with cerebral palsy in “Oasis” directed by director Lee Chang-dong.

The third Korean actor to win a prize from a prestigious international film festival also won for a role in director Lee’s movie. In 2007, Jeon Do-yeon bagged the Cannes Film Festival’s best actress trophy for her role in “Secret Sunshine.”

In 2017, Kim Min-hee won Silver Bear for best actress prize at the Berlin International Film Festival for her role in “On the Beach at Night Alone” by director Hong Sang-soo.

Cannes 2021: Who is in the running?

Cannes Film Festival delegate general Thierry Frémaux announced earlier this month the Official Selection for its 74th edition, due to run July 6-17, will be unveiled just under a month from now on May 27.

Fingers are crossed throughout the international film industry that a physical edition will happen after 2020’s cancellation due to the Covid-19 pandemic but one year on and Frémaux and his selection committee are once again pulling together an Official Selection against a backdrop of immense uncertainty.

France is working its way out of a third wave, thanks to a national lockdown and the ramping up of its vaccination programme. But the seven-day average for daily cases still stood at 27,000 as of Tuesday (April 27) and public spaces from cafes and restaurants to museums and cinemas remain closed.

Filmmakers, producers and sales agents are taking more time to both submit films and accept invites with some preferring to aim directly instead for later events like Locarno and in particular Venice, in the belief the Covid-19 situation in Europe will have eased further by the time they roll around in August.

A key marker for both local and international film professionals is the reopening of cinemas in France. “Thierry Frémaux said cinemas needed to be open for the festival to go ahead and that’s what’s everyone is waiting for,” said one film PR this week. “I’ve already got films lined up for Locarno and Venice but nobody’s contacted me for Cannes titles as yet. It’s usually the other way around.”

French media reported last week culture minister Roselyn Bachelot had secured a promise of May 17 for the reopening of cinemas and local industry expectations are high this will happen. If this does come to pass, Frémaux and his team will be in for an extremely intense 10 days as they put the final touches to their 2021 Official Selection ahead of the announcement on May 27.

Ever hopeful, the Screen team has been talking to its contacts across the industry to get a sense of what is ready and has been submitted and is serious contention for Official Selection and the parallel sections of Directors’ Fortnight, Critics’ Week and ACID.

South Korea

HOSTAGE’

South Korea did not halt production over the last year and a half and a raft of features are coming together in time for a Cannes splash.

Festival regular Park Chan-wook, however, only wrapped murder-mystery drama Decision To Leave in March so it could be a push for the film to be completed in time for Cannes. Park Hae-il stars as a detective whose investigation into a man’s murder leads to his mysterious widow, played by Tang Wei. The director was last in Cannes in 2016 with Palme d’Or contender The Handmaiden.

Films that have been completed in time for submission include Han Jae-rim’s airplane disaster film Emergency Declaration, featuring Parasite actor Song Kang-ho, Hollywood crossover star Lee Byung-hun (The Good, The Bad, The Weird) and Jeon Do-yeon, who won the Palme d’Or for her performance in Lee Chang-dong’s Secret Sunshine in 2007.

There’s also buzz around Pil Gam-sung’s debut feature Hostage: Missing Celebrity. Hwang Jung-min, who was previously in Cannes in 2018 Midnight Screenings title The Spy Gone North, plays a movie star who thinks he is being pranked when he is abducted but then quickly understands his kidnappers are deadly serious. It is produced by hit-making Filmmaker R&K.

From the same production house, Ryoo Seung-wan’s political action drama Escape From Mogadishu is wrapping up post-production and is out to festivals. The director’s previous films, while garnering industry acclaim, have often had their local release dates at odds with major festival premiere schedules. This year’s pandemic uncertainties might change that situation. Ryoo was previously in Venice official selection with The City Of Violence (2006) and in Cannes Directors’ Fortnight with Crying Fist (2005).

Hong Sangsoo is just coming off his Berlinale Silver Bear win for best screenplay with Introduction but there is always the possibility the prolific auteur has another film coming along this year with the usual discretion.

Yim Soon-rye’s highly anticipated The Point Men about a real-life hostage crisis in Afghanistan involving South Korean tourists is due out later this year. It also stars Hwang Jung-min, this time as a diplomat dispatched to resolve the stand-off, opposite K-drama A-lister Hyun Bin (Late Autumn).

The Korean remake of Atom Egoyan’s Nazi-hunting film of the same title, Remember is also due out later this year. Director Lee Il-hyung’s previous credits include box office hit A Violent Prosecutor.  Lee Sung-min, who was also in The Spy Gone North, stars as an octogenarian ex-soldier with dementia who sets out to take vengeance on pro-Japanese collaborators. Two-time Cannes director Yoon Jong-bin’s production house Moonlight Film (The Spy Gone North) is producing.

Lee Kyu-man’s criminal drama The Policeman’s Lineage also has two stars that were previously in Cannes - Cho Jin-woong (The Handmaiden) and Choi Woo-shik (Parasite) – and is in post-production.

With some more overlapping talent, Lee Won-tae, whose Gangster, The Cop, The Devil was in 2019 Cannes’ Midnight Screenings, has political drama The Devil’s Deal starring Cho Jin-woong (The Handmaiden), Lee Sung-min (The Spy Gone North) and Kim Moo-yul (The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil).

Jang Cheol-soo, who premiered Bedevilled in Critics’ Week in 2010, has North Korean army soldier melodrama Serve The People in post-production.

Kim Min-soo, whose screenwriting credits include previous Cannes Midnight Screenings title The Merciless, is making a feature directorial debut with crime thriller Dirty Money, starring Jung Woo (Best Friend) and Kim Dae-myung (The Drug King) that could turn up on the Croisette.

Jung Yoon-suk, whose Non-fiction Diary and Bamseom Pirates: Seoul Inferno did the rounds of festivals such as Berlin and Rotterdam, is working on another documentary called Tomorrow, about people who produce, consume, or use surrogate human forms such as sex dolls and AI robots for different reasons.

Celebrated actors and Korea’s star director Bong Joon-ho of “Parasite” will be attending the upcoming 57th Baeksang Arts Awards to present the prizes, the event’s organizers announced Wednesday.

Several winners of last year’s awards will be returning to this year’s ceremony as presenters. Director Bong will be making an appearance to hand out the trophy for this year’s Best Film. Five films are competing in the category — “Moving On,” “Deliver Us From Evil,” “Samjin Company English Class,” “Voice of Silence,” and “The Book of Fish.”

Actors Kim Hee-ae, Kang Ha-neul, Lee Byung-hun and Jeon Do-yeon will also present awards to this year’s winners in various categories of film and television drama. Comedians Yoo Jae-suk and Park Na-rae, who respectively received the best male and female entertainer awards last year will hand over the honors this year.

Nominees include Song Joong-ki and Kim Soo-hyun for Best Actor and Kim So-yeon and Seo Yea-ji for Best Actress in the television category. Many netizens are wondering whether Seo will attend the ceremony while some claim that it will be “morally wrong” for her to do so.

Seo has been embroiled in controversy after being accused of controlling and abusive behavior as well as being a bully when she was a student. The actor has been replaced in a drama series and has not been seen out in public since the issue arose last month.

The event begins at 9 p.m. on Thursday. It will be broadcast via JTBC. Fans won’t miss out on the red carpet event as it will be streamed via TikTok from 7:20 p.m. This year’s event will also be streamed live without an audience, in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Singer and actor Suzy and comedian Shin Dong-yup will host the ceremony for the third consecutive year.

    Ahn Sungki

The only actor who represents the 102-year history of Korean films, topping the number of films and awards he joined and won

It is not an exaggeration to say that Ahn Sungki, who made his debut with The Twilight Train at age 6 in 1957, has  played ‘Koreans’.  For more than half a century, he has played a variety of characters, ranging from a gangster to a king and a president, in nearly 150 films, becoming ‘the face of Korean cinema’.  In the meantime, his award history is also spectacular.  At the three major film awards in Korea, the Blue Dragon Film Awards, the Baeksang Arts Awards, and the Grand Bell Awards, Ahn won the largest number of awards in history by receiving 25 trophies in total.  This was from the 1980s to the 2010s, so it’s safe to say that he was the most loved actor by Koreans.

After his debut film The Twilight Train, Ahn won the Best Child Actor Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival with Defiance of a Teenage (1959), directed by Kim Kiyoung.  Ahn also appeared in The Housemaid (1960) by Kim, which has been called the best film in the 102-year history of Korean film.  After a break from acting, Ahn appeared in Good Windy Day (1980), directed by Lee Jangho, and entered the center of the Korean film industry again as an adult actor. Ahn worked with Director Bae Changho, who represented Korean films in the 1980s with Lee Jangho.  Ahn starred in The Flower at the Equator (1983), Whale Hunting (1984), and Our Joyful Young Days (1987), directed by Bae, starting to achieve both commercial and critical success.

The three different films that can represent the actor’s long career would include social satire Chilsu and Mansu (1988), directed by Park Kwangsoo; Two Cops (1993), directed by Kang Woosuk, a comedy they recorded a huge success; and Nowhere to Hide, directed by Lee Myungse, a new-style film where Ahn played an important supporting role.  Also, Ahn showed his various aspects through White Badge (1992) by Chung Jiyoung, a reflective view of the Vietnam War; Director Kim Sungsoo’s marital arts film The Warriors (2001) shot in China, and Radio Star (2006) by Lee Joonik, where the actor played a rustic manager’s role with an entirely new image.  From social conscience films to authentic comedy films, Ahn and the Korean cinema grew together, with the actor enjoying also working with younger generation actors when in his 50s.  Ahn played an active role in and out of the Korean film industry, from participating in the screen quota movement to maintain the share of Korean films from overseas films to advocating the Good Downloader campaign to encourage legal downloads. All this is what has made him ‘national actor Ahn Sungki’.  Ju Sungchul

The Admiral who conquered Cannes and Korean box office hit!  Godfather of Korean cinema everybody admires!

Among many actors in the spectrum of being cool and passionate, Choi Minsik is a representative ‘fiery and passionate’ actor.  Based on the acting skills he accumulated on the theater stage including Equus, Choi made his screen debut with Guro Arirang (1989), which deals with labor issues.  He began to make his presence felt through TV dramas such as The Years of Ambition and The Moon of Seoul.  After starring in NO.3 (1997) and The Quiet Family (1998), the actor began to succeed with his charismatic North Korean military acting in Swiri (1999), directed by Kang Jekyu, who set the highest box office record in Korean cinema at the time.  Happy End (1999), a story about a guy who falls into a downward spiral of desire after finding out his wife’s affair, was invited to the Cannes Film Festival - Critics Week.  The film Failan (2001), which vividly depicted the life of a backstreet gangster, made Choi a representative male actor after Ahn Sungki, Park Joonghoon, and Han Sukkyu in the 1990s.  With Happy End and Failan, Choi swept the Best Actor awards at the Baeksang Arts Awards, the Grand Bell Awards, the Blue Dragon Film Awards, the Korean Association of Film Critics Awards, and the Deauville Asian Film Festival.

The moment he further evolved as an actor was when he was nominated for the Best Actor for the second consecutive time with Chihwaseon (2002) and Old Boy (2003), which were invited to the competition section of the Cannes International Film Festival.  If the former is the period drama, in which Director Im Kwontaek depicted the artistic soul of the master Jang Seungup, the latter was a thriller that showed Director Park Chanwook’s mythical imagination based on the original comic book.  Painter Jang Seungup, who tried to make his own style instead of copying others’ artworks, and a man named Oh Daesoo, who has been locked up in his room for 15 years without knowing any reasons, evidently show that Choi’s method acting reached the top level.  Oldboy opened the way to promote Korean films to moviegoers in North America and was remade by Director Spike Lee in 2003.  Choi Minsik was subsequently cast in the action film Lucy (2014), directed by Luc Besson, and worked with Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman.

Choi has not stopped challenging himself.  The characters he played ranged from a spine-chilling serial killer in Kim Jiwoon’s I Saw the Devil (2010) to a man who lives in a criminal organization as neither an ordinary nor a gangster in Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time (2012).  Meanwhile, in Roaring Currents (2014), the actor played Admiral Yi Sunsin, who is praised as one of the great figures in Korean history, setting the highest box office record in Korean cinema, which is still unbroken.  Ju Sungchul

Jeon Doyeon

She’s Jeon Doyeon.  Any more explanation do we need?

Jeon Doyeon is a common noun in the Korean film industry, which means the best acting and the best actor.  When you see the name ‘Jeon Doyeon’ in a movie or a drama, that’s it.  We don’t need any more explanation of the work.  After appearing in a TV series with a young face in the 1990s and making a film debut through The Contact (1997), Jeon has been called the ‘representative actor of Korea’ for 20 years.  When she won the Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival for the first time as a Korean actor with Secret Sunshine (2007), the world may have been surprised, but Jeon Doyeon did not seem to be surprised at all.  When receiving a trophy from Alain Delon, Jeon only made a ‘dazzling smile’ familiar to the Korean movie-goers.  It was her first winning of the overseas film festival award, but it didn’t seem too heavy.  In a later interview, Jeon Doyeon talked about it honestly.  She said, “Winning a prize is not the goal I want to achieve.  It’s an honor to have it, but I’m still hungry.  Because I’m changing now, and I have a lot more to show you.”  This is why Jeon Doyeon’s heyday never ends.

Over the past two decades, Jeon Doyeon’s film history has largely been divided into three parts.  The first category is ‘The Queen of Melo-dramas.’  Through The Contact, a lonely woman who soothed her thirst for love with artificial tears suddenly emerged as a representative of Korean melodramas.  The romance Jeon Doyeon played was greatly loved by the audience, including a hot woman who threw everything at the fateful love (A Promise, 1998), a shy 17-year-old girl who fell in love with a crush (The Harmonium in My Memory, 1999), and a woman who never let go of love in the face of death (You are My Sunshine, 2005).  In every work, Jeon Doyeon appeared with a new face that we never imagine in her previous films.  If you are an overseas audience, you will be surprised to meet Jeon Doyeon for the first time with any of her movies, but particularly, you mustn’t miss Happy End (1999) and Untold Scandal (2003).  It is always surprising to see that the same actor played totally different characters; a woman, who cries while giving sleeping pills to her young daughter to meet her lover secretly; a woman in the Joseon Dynasty, who is overwhelmed by the joy of love in her life.

And finally, Jeon Doyeon won the protagonist in Director Lee Changdong’s Secret Sunshine.  The pain of a mother who lost her only son.  While playing the character, Jeon Doyeon collapses bearing the pain that her fragile body can’t handle.  Through every scene she plays, her pain hits the heart of the audience.  Especially, the scene where she murmurs to God while walking at night is horrifyingly realistic.  Although Jeon never had experienced such heartbreaking emotions, she expressed them naturally like a mother who had experienced them thousands of times.  The pure madness in The Housemaid (2010), the miserable loneliness in Way Back Home (2013), the nasty love in The Shameless (2014), and the heartbreaking tears in Birthday (2019), we experience every emotion through Jeon Doyeon’s acting.  While we are immersed in the emotions she left behind, the actor advances to another Jeon Doyeon’s character.

Best, representative, extraordinary, and irreplaceable, etc.   These modifiers cannot help but be burdensome to the actor and she knows the weight.  She confessed that she was in agony to perform better for a moment.  At that time, Actor Youn Yuhjung sent her a short message that said, “Don’t worry.  You’re Jeon Doyeon.”  We all know what Youn knows, too.  She is Jeon Doyeon.  What further explanation do we need?  We’re just waiting for her next film.  Park Hyeeun

'Emergency Declaration,' 'In Front of Your Face' invited to Cannes' non-competition

SEOUL, June 3 (Yonhap) -- South Korean films "Emergency Declaration," directed by Han Jae-rim, and "In Front of Your Face" by Hong Sang-soo were invited to this year's Cannes Film Festival.

In the official selection for the 74th Cannes Film Festival announced on Thursday, "Emergency Declaration" was listed in the Out of Competition category along with five other films, including "The Velvet Underground" by Todd Haynes, "Stillwater" by Tom McCarthy and "De Son Vivant" by Emmanuelle Bercot.

Celebrated South Korean auteur Hong Sang-soo's "In Front of Your Face" was named in the Cannes Premieres section.

The announcement marked the first time in five years in which a Korean film failed to make an entry to Cannes' main competition, excluding last year when the festival was canceled.

Since Park Chan-wook's "The Handmaiden" in 2016, Bong Joon-ho's "Okja" (2017), Hong's "The Day After" (2017), Lee Chang-dong's "Burning" and Bong's "Parasite" (2019) were selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at Cannes. "Parasite" won the top prize at that year.

The Cannes festival, one of the most prestigious film fests in the world, will take place on July 6-17, with American filmmaker Spike Lee named jury president.

This year, 24 films including the opener "Annette" by Leos Carax, "Red Rocket" by Sean Baker, "The French Dispatch" by Wes Anderson and "Drive My Car" by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, will contend for Palme d'Or.

While its 2020 edition was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Cannes' organizers announced the list of its selections of 56 movies without prize winners. Two Korean movies -- Yeon Sang-ho's "Peninsula" and Im Sang-soo's "Heaven: To The Land of Happiness" -- were included.

‘Emergency Declaration’ and ‘In Front of Your Face’ Invited to Cannes Non-Competition

Two Korean films were officially invited to this year’s Cannes Film Festival – Han Jae Rim’s Emergency Declaration and Hong Sang Soo’s In Front of Your Face.

In the official selection of the 74th Cannes Film Festival announced Thursday, Director Han’s new film Emergency Declaration was listed in the Out of Competition category. Emergency Declaration begins when an in-air flight gets caught up in an unprecedented natural disaster.

Thierry Fremaux, the director of the Cannes committee, shared, “I think Korean films are largely divided into writer-oriented films, historical works, and works that specify a specific genre. And Emergency Declaration is a work that specifies a specific genre. It’s a perfect genre film.”

Han expressed joy over the news, saying, “I hope my desire to provide hope and comfort through Emergency Declaration will be conveyed to everyone at a time when the entire world is experiencing difficulties due to the pandemic.”

Director Hong Sang Soo’s In Front of Your Face was also named in the Cannes Premieres section, a new section that joined this year’s lineup. It’s designed to give returning Cannes auteurs a safe place to screen new work outside of the competition in the prestigious Debussy theater.

Fremaux shared, “I think he is a minimalist who makes personal films, and he is a director who inspires other film directors.” In Front of Your Face is Hong’s 11th film that was invited to Cannes. This makes Hong the Korean film director with the most Cannes invitations.

The Cannes Film Festival, normally held in May, has been postponed to July this year due to the COVID-19. It will be held from July 6th to July 17th.

The movie <Emergency Declaration> was officially invited to the Out of Competition section of the 74th Cannes Film Festival. [Provided/distributed by: Showbox | Produced by: MAGNUM 9 | Co-production: C-JeS Entertainment, Cineju (U) | Director: Han Jae-rim | Cast: Song Kang-ho, Lee Byung-hun, Jeon Do-yeon, Kim Nam-gil, Im Si-wan, Kim So-jin, Park Hae-joon]

<Emergency Declaration> is a reality aviation disaster film that takes place in the face of an unprecedented disaster situation and takes place about an airplane that declares an unconditional landing.

On the 3rd, the Cannes Film Festival Secretariat held an official press conference and introduced the official invitations of the festival to be held this year. <Emergency Declaration> is invited to the non-competition section, the main official section of the film festival, and makes its debut in the world film industry. The non-competitive section is one of the representative sections of the Cannes Film Festival, which carefully selects and invites works with both artistic and commercial qualities.

Thierry Fremo, executive director of the Cannes Film Festival on this day, said, “I think Korean films are largely divided into writeristic films, historical films, and films with outstanding genre characteristics. It can be said that it is a perfect genre film,” said the reason for the invitation.

In addition to the fact that it is the first aviation disaster film in Korea to deliver an overwhelming sense of immersion, <Emergency Declaration>, which has been attracting attention for its meeting of prominent actors such as Song Kang-ho, Lee Byung-hun, Jeon Do-yeon, Kim Nam-gil, Im Si-wan, Kim So-jin, and Park Hae-jun, is once again a hit in the film industry with the news of the Cannes Film Festival invitation expectations were raised to a high level.

Above all, it is a pleasure to know that the representative actors of Korea, who have had a deep relationship with the Cannes Film Festival, were once again honored with the Cannes invitation through the <Emergency Declaration>.

Song Kang-ho, who won the Palme d'Or at Cannes for Parasite (2019), and Jeon Do-yeon, the first Korean actor to win the Best Actress Award at Cannes for <Miryang / Secret Sunshine> (2007), as well as Lee Byung-hun, Kim Nam-gil, and Im Si-wan walked the red carpet. Attention is focused on what kind of new image they will show to the world audience through <Emergency Declaration>.

<Emergency Declaration> is a new work by director Han Jae-rim, who has won box office success with high-quality films such as <The Purpose of Love / Rules of Dating> (2005) and <Elegant World / The Show Must Go on> (2007), which attracted audiences by drawing great sympathy with realistic description; <Contemplation / Face Reader> (2013), which was loved by 9.13 million viewers, <The King> (2017), which attracted audiences with stylish directing and solid storyline.

Director Han Jae-rim said in the news of the invitation, "I hope that the feeling of giving hope and comfort through the movie <Emergency Declaration> will be conveyed to everyone at a time when the world is experiencing difficulties due to Corona."

On the other hand, 'emergency declaration' refers to an emergency in which, when an aircraft is faced with a disaster situation, normal operation is no longer possible according to the judgment of the captain and an unconditional landing is declared. It will be shown for the first time in the world at Cannes Film Festival, which opens on Sunday.

‘Emergency Declaration’ Will Have the First Screening at the Cannes Film Festival

by krishkim

Emergency Declaration will have its first screening at the 74th Cannes Film Festival. And today, the first still photos of the characters were released.

Earlier, Emergency Declaration was officially invited to the out of competition section. The film will be unveiled to the public for the first time in the press screening on July 15th and premiere on July 16th. Along with director Han Jae Rim, actors Song Kang Ho, Lee Byung Hun, and Im Si Wan will step on the red carpet for the premiere.

The non-competitive section carefully selects and invites works with both artistic and commercial qualities. Earlier, Thierry Fremaux had praised Emergency Declaration as “the perfect genre film,” raising the expectations of movie fans.

Along with the news, Emergency Declaration released the official poster and still photos. The official poster showed an airplane flying but with the phrase “TAKE YOUR SEAT” upside down. The released still photos capture the expressive faces of various characters. What will they do in the face of urgent and chaotic situations?

Emergency Declaration is an aviation term meaning a state of emergency if planes can no longer operate normally by the captain’s judgment when faced with a disaster situation. As Korea’s first aviation disaster movie, Emergency Declaration will be screened around the world after the Cannes Film Festival.

Jeon Do Yeon heralded yet another shocking transformation.

According to media outlets, Jeon was offered the lead role in the new Netflix original film KILL Bok Soon. To which, her agency Management SOOP responded, “The actress is reviewing the offer.”

The role she was offered to play is the role of a “killer.” If she joins this upcoming Netflix original series, it will be her first collaboration with Netflix and her first action thriller film. Since the actress mostly showed her power in the drama genre, we can’t help but wonder how her unique color will melt into the action thriller.

In addition, The Merciless director Byun Sung Hyun will helm the production of KILL Bok Soon. The possible collaboration of the best actress, a successful director, and Netflix is already a hot topic.

KILL Bok Soon, produced by Seed Films, will start filming by the end of this year.

Meanwhile, Jeon Do Yeon’s new TV series No Longer Human will air in the second half of this year.

Upcoming JTBC Drama Unveils First Teaser

by C. Hong | Jul 12, 2021

JTBC has released the first look at their upcoming 10th anniversary special drama, “Disqualified as a Human” (literal translation).

“Disqualified as a Human” is about the stories of average people who realize they haven’t become anything throughout their lives and try their best to see the spotlight. Jeon Do Yeon stars as Boo Jung, a ghostwriter in her 40s who feels lost and as if she hasn’t been able to amount to anything. Ryu Jun Yeol stars as Kang Jae, a man who runs a service where employees act out whatever roles clients request. Although he is striving to overcome poverty, he becomes afraid of himself out of the fear that he won’t be able to become anything.

Other cast members include Park Byung Eun, who plays Boo Jung’s husband Jung Soo, and Kim Hyo Jin, who plays Jung Soo’s first love. Park Ji Young plays Ah Ran, an actress who has a lot of secrets that are connected to Boo Jung, and Yang Dong Geun plays Woo Nam, an intensive care nurse at a convalescence hospital and a refreshing friend.

The first teaser features the cast of the drama reading the synopsis out loud. The shorter version of the teaser reads, “A drama is a place where you can walk someone else’s path for a brief moment before going back.” The longer version of the teaser reads:

If we were to divide human lives into “bright lives” and “dark lives,” which kind of life would people want to live most? Of course, we would all do our best to choose the path of the bright life. But “Disqualified as a Human” starts with the question, “What if I lived a life a little different from my original self?” It is about the stories of those who stand in the dark, not the light. We aim to tell the stories of the most ordinary lives, of the people who walk the dark path that would not be an easy choice for us to choose to step into.

JTBC has released a teaser poster for Human Disqualification (aka No Longer Human), marking its 10th anniversary.

It tells the experiences of ordinary individuals who realize they haven’t accomplished anything in their life and strive to be in the spotlight.

Jeon Do Yeon will be a woman who feels adrift because she hasn’t accomplished anything in her chosen profession so far. Ryu Jun Yeol will be a guy who is frightened of himself because he is afraid that he would never be able to become anyone successful. It tells a healing story drawn by two men and women facing their own darkness.

Jeon Do Yeon will play Boo Jung, a ghostwriter who has always tried her best in her life. However, she feels dissatisfied with herself and believes she hasn’t yet been able to amount to anything.

Kang Jae, played by Ryu Jun Yeol, is a guy who owns a service in which people play whatever roles clients desire. Despite his efforts to transcend poverty, the fear of success always haunts him.

The production team of Human Disqualification said, “The story of the two will warm the viewers’ hearts. It’s been a long time since there has been a deeply emotional drama in the industry that lingers in our minds. I hope this work would allow the audience to find what Jeon Do Yeon and Ryu Jun Yeol is capable of. So, please stay tuned for their wonderful teamwork.”

Produced by One Fine Spring Day and Christmas in August director Hur Jin Ho, No Longer Human will premiere in September.

‘EMERGENCY DECLARATION’

Dir/scr: Han Jae-Rim. South Korea. 2021. 147 mins

There are times when it’s impossible to review a film without revealing anything about the plot – despite requests from the film’s producers to keep a lid on the storyline. This is one of those cases. The fifth feature by Korean director Han Jae-rim is a disaster thriller about a lethal virus outbreak – on a plane. Everything about how the film is viewed – including whether it gets a viewing at all – will derive from this fact.

One of the film’s main obstacles is how we have all become amateur epidemiologists of late

Han wrote the script well before the current global pandemic, although shooting started in 2020 under lockdown conditions. Whether audiences see this as prescient or foolhardy will depend a lot individual experiences of this last 18 months, and how much they are prepared to suppress both unease and exasperation in order to enjoy what is – leaving questions of timing aside – an overlong, cliché-ridden example of the disaster genre. Alongside the film’s newsworthiness, the presence of Parasite star and Cannes Jury member Song Kang-ho makes it an easy Out of Competition selection for the festival – but its ongoing future outside South Korea is less than certain.

One of the film’s main obstacles is how we have all become amateur epidemiologists of late. When bioterrorist Jin-seok (Yim Si-wan) spreads a deadly virus via an inhaler on a flight from Seoul to Honolulu and the first victim is dead within hours, that seems reasonable enough. Fulminant strains do exist. When a forensic police officer identifies a virus in a few minutes at a crime scene – it seems less likely, although possible. But when the battered and bruised police sergeant played by Song strides into a high-security biotechnology lab though a flimsy plastic screen door and manages to get himself injected first with this speedy virus, and then with an even speedier anti-viral drug, then suspended disbelief throws in the towel.

On other fronts, Emergency Declaration ticks all the boxes of its chosen genre without adding much that’s new. One of the passengers, Jae-hyuk (Lee Byung-hun), is, naturally, a former pilot who gave up flying years before when he made a brave emergency landing, saving all but two stewardesses – one of whom, was, naturally, the wife of the co-pilot on the current flight. The wife of Song’s district policeman character In-ho is also on board – something that apparently gives him access-all-areas superpowers when it comes to attending meetings of the crisis committee chaired by Transport Minister Sook-hee (Jeon Do-yeon).

Han’s script makes some attempt to get around the problem of how to vary the monotone of characters in a confined space looking terrified for two hours by cutting frequently to the scene back on the ground in Seoul, which at least gives the viewer more time with the ever-watchable Song (and also gifts us the film’s best and most original moment – a car chase filmed entirely through the windscreen of the vehicle in pursuit). In the course of what is in reality a nine hour, 20 minute flight, shady biotech corps are confronted, suspects caught, anxious relatives bused around, and demonstrations mounted by fearful citizens, who had enough spare time to make themselves some very impressive placards.

If there’s one element in Emergency Declaration that saves it from feeling like the wrong film at the wrong time, it’s the way in which the passengers on the plane become a microcosm of society at large as they are forced to make their own decisions about whether or not to isolate infected passengers, to look out for number one or help others, and whether to collectively make the ultimate sacrifice in order to save far more lives than the 121 people on Flight 501. This idea could have been taken somewhere intriguing – but the film remains as a series of sketches that are all but erased by the film’s trite and inauthentic ending.
