So is Chang Chen Cool, Calm and Collected?

In movies or on magazine covers, we often see Chang Chen acts as a lonely, cold, gloomy, haunting, stubborn character. So what is the real Chang Chen like? He has been spotted playing baseball in a stadium, attending orchestra concert, browsing through bookstore or biking along Beijing riverside leisurely...

Due to recent Red Cliff promo, this low key actor Chang Chen is once again gaining attention through television interviews and movie premieres.

From the limelight, one couldn't help but noticed that CC is always putting on a dark outfit and overshadowed by this famous director up to the top-notch actors and actresses from Cliff. Yes, he is not that eye-catching but yet is one that is hard to be ignored. Perhaps his appearance is like one of "Sun Quan" in the movie, man of few words yet leaves a lasting impressive in one's mind.

Q: Let's talk about the character "San Quan"

CC: I think SQ is like the youth in this modern days, full of idealistic and aspiration yet because of external pressures from family and the world out there one just feel so stuck in life. Many young people after watching the movie could really relate to SQ character 'cos they sort of see themselves in him.

Q: Recently you have done this blockbuster historical epic 'Red Cliff' and low budget indie film 'Parking', what exactly is your principal in choosing a movie?

CC: I am usually not a very proactive person when it comes to choosing script; I was just fortunate enough to have all these top-notched directors come knocking at my door. If I like the story-line, I just go for it; But for RC, I accepted the role without even reading the script.

Q: What's your most memorable time during RC filming?

CC: I enjoy acting with all these famous actors from Mainland China such as Chang Fenyi, Hu Jun etc They have this mysterious charm and personality that boggles my mind. It's sort of like Beijing City, such big Imperial city yet one doesn't feel pressure but take life easy and leisurely. That's how I admire their laid backness and enjoy interacting with them

Q: Did you know that you are a teen idol in Mainland China esp with your movie "A Brighter Summer Day" which impacted many young people?

CC: Yes, I have heard that many young fans in China are fascinated with that movie. I am amazed that it really speaks to them and touches on the cores of their lives.

Q: Looking back at all your filming, is "A Brighter Summer Day" (2000) your most memorable one?

CC: ABSD is indeed a very important project in my life. In fact, every movie I did regardless of what the respond was at that time, to me, is all significant and a unique experience.

Take for example in "2046, I learned that Good things are worth waiting for;

In "The Go Master" I learned about Zen world, open mind, meditation etc which is still useful for me at present;

Even in the whole process of filming "Blood Brothers/Gate of Heaven", I see the constant idealists and conflict with reality still exist among young people.

Q: Of all the films you did, which film particular touches you or transforms you?

CC: I would say "Eros" with Gong Li. After the filming, I felt that my acting has reached to the next level and I felt like I am starting afresh again.

Q: What does movie mean to you as an actor?

CC: Well, it's like a group of like-minded people gathers together to achieve a dream and the most exciting part is the process itself.

Q: What is your major project for 2009?

CC: I will once again cooperate with Director John Woo in his new film and my main role is to cast with Korean actress Song Hye Kyo.

The backdrop of the film is set in Shanghai focusing on the lives of 3 men and 5 women during those trouble times in the war.

In this movie, everyone is questing for their roots and own identity to fit into the society which was a pretty chaotic yet enchanting one in that era. Among my many films, I think this one will seriously give me an in-depth thought on life as in self-reflection and evaluation.

Q: Alright, what's the difference between REEL Chang Chen and REAL Chang Chen?

CC: Well, both happy and sad; The character that I usually portray in the movie is neither good nor evil; it is just that due to environmental pressure, relationship issues or life disappointments that cause the character to be who he is but in real life I am a pretty happy person.

Q: You have entered the show-biz since your teen years, so what's the biggest change you see through acting?

CC: The fun part about acting is one gets to experience life at different stages. Take for example in the movie "Three Times", I get to experience 3 kinds of life. In fact this movie sort of speaks about my life journey from juvenile to adulthood.

Q: Who is your idol?

CC: Johnny Depp

Q: Heard that Tony Leung said you are the Oriental Johnny Depp?

CC: Could be that I have been wearing dark suit and shades In fact, I have admired Johnny Depp since I was a teen. Since "Edward Scissorhands", I have watched almost all of his movies. As I grow older, I someone started to emulate his sense of styles in dressing. I admire his well mannered appearance in public and his love for his family. He acting in various role and genre of films somehow helps me be more selective in choosing my movie acting wisely.

Q: What do you think is the most important quality in a man?

CC: Confidence

Q: Nowadays metro-sexual men do not buy the idea of the traditional men on being stern and expressionless. How about you? When did you last shed tears?

CC: I cried watching this Japanese animation 'Sukai Kurora' aka The Sky Crawlers. It was a beautiful but very sad story about a bunch of kids living and surviving in the tragic war.

Q: Which is your most fond memory in life?

CC: Being a student... having this simple, naive, carefree and none desiring life...

Q: You used to major in Art and then venture into acting. What new thing would you like to learn?

CC: In the past, I like to be like Johnny Depp fully participating in the behind the scene work in filming industry but after I acted in so many movies and seeing the complexity of the filming bts, I changed my mind. I think I would like to learn an instrument, maybe learning how to play piano.

Q: What do you foresee life like in the future?

CC: No class ranking, no war, no pollution and every one is free to make their own decision and fulfill their dreams

Q: What do you most like to do now?

CC: I love hiking and every year I go hiking with my friends to 南横 mountain/resort in Taiwan; If there is a long vacation, I like to visit Iceland to watch the Northern Lights/Aurora Borealis.

Aww, I think he's confirmed dear . His interview give me a honest picture of him which I like a lot. He has a charm that I think many girls could be hard to resist , no exception for me, muahhhhh . The movie is not even starting yet, and I'm here dreaming about this couple and the movie,haha, still a LONG way for us to go.

John Woo to make 'Titanic of the east'

BEIJING, China -- Hong Kong filmmaker John Woo is to follow his box office hits "Red Cliff" and "Red Cliff 2" with a new movie to be shot in China this year, the Beijing News reported Saturday.

The president of the country's biggest movie producer and distributor, China Film, told the daily he had reached agreement with the celebrated director, without giving further details.

Woo is best known internationally for directing Hollywood blockbusters "Mission: Impossible II" and "Face/Off."

His new movie has the working title "Pacific Steamer" and tells the story of the sinking of a steam boat en route from mainland China to Taiwan in 1949 as the civil war ends, the paper said, billing it the "Titanic of the east."

Other reports said the agreement with China Film would make up for other investors pulling out of the project.

Woo's last two Chinese projects, "Red Cliff" and "Red Cliff 2," smashed box office records by taking more than 600 million yuan (90 million dollars) in China.

He told media that he is busy practicing his Kung Fu fighting skills for WKW's movie 'First Generation Master' and he said he wasn't sure if he will be Bruce Lee in the film and when exactly WKW will start the filming; he guessed it could be in June. He states that 'Steamer' will most likely to start filming by the end of the year.

Director John Woo is one of the producers in this upcoming movie call Dirt Rich in Shanghai

- According to "Hollywood Reporter" and "Screen Daily", Michelle is going to be a co-producer for a $2 million urban romance, Dirt Rich in Shanghai, along with Terence Chang, John Woo, David Tang and Matthew Tong. Starring Sun Honglei, Hung Shiao-Ling, and Kelly Lin (the later two are acting clients of Stellar Entertainment), the film tells a story about nouveau riche man determined to transform his down-to-earth image into a gentleman of taste, in order to pursue a famous actress. Shooting will start in April in Xiamen and Shanghai of China.
