'Hand Phone' Showcases Top Talent

"Paradise Murdered'' director Kim Han-min brings yet another unconventional thriller, "Hand Phone.'' But unlike his previous work, the setting shifts from an isolated island to the big city and, like its title suggests, revolves around every urbanite's essential hardware, the cell phone

The cell phone, which South Koreans commonly call "hand phone'' and thus the title of the film, has appeared without fail in recent thrillers such as "Seven Days.'' "Hand Phone'' also has the victim running around as the perpetrator whispers orders from the other line. It capitalizes on the familiar anxiety of looking for a charger when the battery starts dying out on an important conversation. It also shows the perils of losing one's personal information held by cell phones.

The beauty of the film lies in its haunting revelation of the grotesque in things mundane and the unleashing of the latent beast within individuals, including the most docile, under-pressing or unexpected situations. The movie is all about character development, and Park Yong-woo's ("Once Upon a Time in Corea'') skin-crawling yet sympathy-provoking performance is the reason for watching the film.

Seung-min ("Forever the Moment'' star Eum Tae-woong) is a celebrity manager who will sacrifice whatever is necessary for his career. Even as loan sharks threaten the safety of his wife (played by "Paradise Murdered'' beauty Park Sol-mi), he hosts debaucherous parties to kowtow to filmmakers. His only hope is Jin-a (newcomer Lee Se-na), a starlet on the rise for her sweet, innocent image. When Jin-a lands a lucrative modeling contract, however, her boyfriend Yun-ho (model Kim Nam-gil) blackmails Seung-min with their sex video.

To make matters worse, Seung-min loses his cell phone, which stores the sex video and hundreds of contact numbers that are essential to business. A male voice (Park Yong-woo) promises to return the device, but only calls to pry details about Seung-min's private life, showing rather too much interest in his wife.

Fearing that the sex clip will wind up on the Internet, Seung-min decides he has no choice but to follow the anonymous caller's orders: first, to answer calls with a cheerful, "Thank you,'' second, to be polite, and third, to carry out specific actions against certain individuals. But the third order becomes increasingly violent and, when finally his wife becomes involved, Seung-min starts to track down his phone and its new user on his own.

Unlike most cat-and-mouse chases, "Hand Phone'' makes no secret of who the perpetrator is. I-gyu is no serial killer or kidnapper with sinister intentions; in fact he's a diligent manager at a local retailer who never loses a smile even when attending to the most obnoxious customers. When he discovers, however, that he can also exert control over someone ― and be a king like his customers ― Seung-min becomes an outlet for his frustrations, and he submits to his darker side and has his revenge.

Both men are workaholics who allow their jobs to shape their private life, and the movie turns noir in the style of Woody Allen's "Match Point.'' The movie enters a sort of gray zone where the victim is more despicable than the perpetrator. Seung-min's morals are rather questionable to begin with, but I-gyu's "split personality'' is slightly understandable. Viewers may sympathize with this guy next door who is himself a victim ― in the bizarre customer service culture that has recently become omnipresent in Korea, workers are told to submit to customers as if they are like dictators rather than kings.

While the convoluted plotline slightly downgrades its overall quality, the thriller clearly reminds viewers not to lose their cell phones.

'Speed Scandal' breaks through 8m tickets

The domestic box office has been given a welcome boost in ticket sales by homegrown films which had been, until recently, bullied out of contention by Hollywood heavyweights.

Last year's biggest box-office draw "Speed Scandal" finally inched past the 8 million mark in attendance and moved up a notch above "Welcome to Dongmakgol (2005)" to No. 7 on the all-time domestic box-office chart.

According to Lotte Entertainment, the Cha Tae-hyun romp enjoyed a boost on Valentine's Day selling 39,752 tickets, which brought the tally to 8,013,710.

Making even more headway has thus far been the unexpected success of the low-budget independent documentary "Old Partner." Combined Friday and Saturday attendance stood at 158,363, which brought the total to nearly 700,000.

The market share of Korean movies has been declining since the reduction in the film quota in 2006, which was implemented by the Korean government in relation to the free trade pact with the United States.

The strong performances of "Speed Scandal" and "Old Partner" are regarded as a much-awaited positive development for the local film industry.

"Old Partner" features a touching portrait of the bond between an old farmer and his aging ox, hitting a nerve with audiences all across the nation.

The film's success has been attributed to a combination of factors. Distribution of the prints began small and then expanded with each successive week. The film's production team had good faith that their film would have sturdy legs and as it turns out they were right.

"Old Partner" also benefited from positive response and word-of-mouth among theater-goers, a factor that has given it momentum in the past weeks since its release on Jan. 15.

Budgeted at 200 million won ($140,000), including marketing costs, the hit documentary is expected to garner a hefty return. And with the addition of English subtitles, the film is set to gain a new viewership aimed at foreign nationals in the weeks ahead.

The documentary has turned into something of a trend. The box-office phenomenon has snowballed into a must-see event -- so much so that even President Lee Myung-bak was treated to a special screening on Sunday.

After the viewing, Lee said, "It would be a good idea to organize plans to expand or create more theaters exclusively for independent and animated films."

Interestingly enough, the Korean Film Council had been proposing the establishment of such exclusive theaters prior to the current administration in the hopes of providing more visibility for local independent and animated films to strengthen the domestic film industry.

"Old Partner" director Lee Choong-yeol will receive an award at the 2nd edition of the Korean Independent Producers Award ceremony on Thursday.

Lee's film has trumped "Once" (220,000 viewers) and Michael Moore's "Farenheit 911" (450,000 viewers) to become the highest grossing independent film and documentary in Korea. If "Old Partner" continues its box-office run, it is expected to reach the 1 million mark in attendance.

Meanwhile, the weekend box office saw a close one-on-one matchup between the Brad Pitt Oscar hopeful "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" and the Korean stock market caper "The Scam."

While the Pitt headliner came out on top, "The Scam," starring Park Yong-ha, Park Hee-soon and Kim Min-jeong came in a close second.

"Benjamin Button" was shown in 387 theaters and drew a little over 390,000 viewers, while "The Scam" drew an estimated 370,000 in 484 theaters.

As independent documentary "Old Partner," directed by Lee Chung-ryoul, makes a successful theater run, its production company plans to reward 80-year-old farmer Choi Won-kyun, who took a leading role in the film.

Choi didn't seek any extra bonuses, but producer Studio Nurimbo has decided to give 10 percent of its profits to Choi as thank-you money.

According to statistics released by the Korea Film Council on Monday, "Old Partner," released on Jan. 15, drew 717,885 viewers nationwide until last Sunday, a month after its release. The film has so far reaped some W4.83 billion (US$1=W1,427) in profit, some W2.4 billion of which went to the producer. Given that no more than W200 million was spent on making the film, the profit is 12 times the investment.

"Old Partner" is setting a record in the history of independent movies. Even President Lee Myung-back visited a movie theater to see it.

SBS 새 수목드라마 '카인과 아벨'(극본 박계옥, 연출 김형식)은 병원을 둘러싼 권력으로부터 고립되어 있는 인간의 존엄성과 천재의사가 겪게 되는 운명적 갈등을 그린 드라마로 '환자권리장전'의 인식과 그것을 침해하려는 세력에 대한 의사들의 싸움을 그려낼 전망이다.

18일 방송분에서는 중국 국경지대 모래사막, 초인(소지섭)은 자신이 총에 맞아 위급한 상황을 되뇌인다.

이어 시간은 과거로 거슬러가고, 어린 초인은 어린 선우, 그리고 휠체어에 탄 서연과 함께 즐거운 시간을 보낸다. 다시 시간은 현재로 돌아오고, 비행기에서 위급환자를 마주한 선우(신현준)는 신속한 조치로 환자를 보살핀다.

그 시각, 보성병원에서 나혜주(김해숙)는 비행기에서 시작된 선우의 수술소식을 접하고는 이를 언론에 잘 포장하도록 지시하고는 호흡기를 낀 채 잠들어 있는 종민을 싸늘하게 바라본다.

SBS newly launched Wednesday and Thursday drama (Screenwriter Pak Gyeo-ok, Director Kim Hyeong-sik) is about the dignity of human isolated by power which surrounded the hospital and the fatality of a natural talented doctor.

The story is about appreciation a patients' bill of rights and struggle of doctors who are tring to defend it from hospital.

On 18th Feb, Cho-in(actor So ji-seob) who taken a bullet, is muttering himself about a state of emergency.

The scene goes to past, young Cho-in is having a good time with young Seon-wu(actor Shin Hyun-jun) and a girl in a wheelchair, Seo Yeon(actress Chae Jeong-an). Back to the present, Seon-wu is handdling emergency case.

KBS Drama 'Again, My Love' the 5th episode - it is common saying in Korea too. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

Jeon In-hwa(as Eun Hye-jeong) reveales her true character and gets her revenge on Choi Myeong-gil(as Han Myeong-in). Eun is Lee's 20-year secret lover. Han is Lee's wife.

20 years ago, Eun left Lee for his success. She has lived in his shade. But, oneday Lee suddenly declares a total separation from her. After breakdown, Eun decides to get back her life and Lee.

Accidentally on purpose Eun approaches Lee's wife Han. Eun participates to an painting auction and buys an expensive painting for Han and makes intimate relations with Han.

Finally Eun wins Han's favor and becomes her best friend. Then Eun discloses her relationship with Lee. This hurts deep on Han's heart.

It is the two actress' performance that this episode's highlight. Don't miss Han's childlike smile and Eun's merciless face.

Production crew member said "The day of filming was so cold that everyone couldn't help but think the Korean saying - woman's grudge can make it snow in the springtime."

Producer said, "The show rating rises when Choi Myeong-gil and Jeon In-hwa appear. Until now, there was few scenes about their conflict, but from now two women's fight will be shown. We are expecting the show rating to rise higher."

Viewership ratings for “Don’t Cry My Love” soar to 18.2%, the highest in its primetime slot!

Setting high viewership ratings, the daily TV miniseries “Don’t Cry My Love” (writer Park Jung-ran, co-directors Kim Sa-hyun and Lee Dong-yoon) is powering MBC back to its dominant position in the primetime daily show arena.

MBC’s daily TV miniseries “Don’t Cry My Love” recorded a viewership rating exceeding 18%, gaining more viewers and posting its highest viewership rating so far. It easily became the top draw among all shows on competing networks in the same primetime slot.

According to TNS Media, a viewership rating agency, ratings for “Don’t Cry My Love” shot to 18.2% (Seoul metropolitan area) on February 17th (Tue), surpassing its previous high viewership rating of 17.3% by an increase of 0.9%. The show is steaming ahead in the ratings. The TNS ratings for the metropolitan area is a barometer of viewership ratings. Meanwhile, the national viewership ratings for “Don’t Cry My Love” reached 16.5%, which is the highest ratings since November 17th.

”Don’t Cry My Love” edged out the KBS daily TV miniseries’ “Coming Home” (16.6%) that airs in the same primetime slot by 1.6%.

Attracting an overwhelming percentage of female viewers in their twenties and thirties, “Don’t Cry My Love” has steadily raised its viewership ratings to become the number one show in its primetime slot.

On the show that aired on February 17th (Tue), Mi-soo is invited over to Young-min’s home for dinner and everyone except Young-min’s aunt approves of Mi-soo as the right wife for Young-min.

In online comments about the show, one viewer wrote, “It felt so good to see Mi-soo and Young-min happy to be together.” Another viewer said “The characters overcome their difficulties in the past that they had no control over and try to make the best out of what they have in the present. It’s an inspiring and uplifting story.” An overwhelming number of comments were positive with glowing praise for the show.

In the following episode that aired on February 18th (Wed), Mi-soo inexplicably joins the table where Hyun-woo is with his blind date, creating an awkward situation. Young-min gives Mi-soo a matching band to reaffirm their love and tells her that he’d like her to be patient as he tries to win his family’s and her family’s approval of their marriage. After this, he kisses Mi-soo in a romantic embrace.
