World matters aside, 2020 had been a good year so far with two of JJH's having come out already. However it seems we have a draught approaching until early next year?

*** I'm happy that JJH is on the line-up of the "Best Actor" award in the Baeksang. He's such a talented actor. All who are nominated here ar "well-deserving" as their dramas have been loved so much, like "Hyena". I congratulate whoever will take the win home. Looking forward for the winner.

Hello @willenette ~ I am happy for him too. I follow the Kingdom series and watched Hyena. LOVE both dramas. It was such a treat to see him in two productions this year. Regarding the nominations, I may be a bit bias, but I do honestly feel that he did a great job playing two diverse characters so I am really rooting for him.

K-Drama Time Machine: When Ju Ji Hoon Stripped Soo Ae’s “Mask” To Claim True Love

20200527_130956-540x400.jpg

It has been five years since SBS melodrama Mask first aired – and yet if you have been a fan of the series, the memories of all those tears you’ve wept feels like it was just yesterday.

Along with dominating “healing” drama trend, K-Drama landscape has set a stable position for its opposing theme. Melodramas are synonymous to tears, vengeance, misunderstanding and love. Despite its prepare-your-heart-for-the-worst label, it continuously draw a following because of the scenarios it usually thread on.

Mask KDrama

Title: Mask
Network: SBS
Theme: romance, revenge
Length: 16 episodes
Broadcast Date: 27 May 2015 to 30 July 2015
Main Leads: Soo Ae | Ju Ji Hoon | Yeon Jung Hoon | Yoo In Young
Highlights: Well-contrived melodrama | Polished character portrayals
Overall Rating: 4.gif
Re-watch Value: 4.gif
Related Dramas: Alice in Cheongdamdong, Five Fingers, I Have a Lover, Which Star Did You Come From, Miss Ripley, Shark

Top-billed by Soo Ae, Ju Ji Hoon, Yeon Jung Hoon and Yoo In Young, Mask is a melodrama example that would consume your emotions. But the lingering message nudges the viewers to contemplate on relationship issues particularly experienced by middle-aged people.

Mask KDrama

Quick Plot Roundup

Mask revolves around a family who accepted a new daughter-in-law, Seo Eun Ha, (Soo Ae) to strengthen their wealth with her government connection through her politician father. Unaware that Eun Ha died in an accident, Min Seok Hoon (Yeon Jung Hoon), her ex-lover hired Byun Ji Sook (Soo Ae).

In a freak coincidence Ji Sook happened to be a doppelganger of Eun Ha. However, their fates are completely different. One leads an impoverished life while the other enjoys a grandiose and elite social status.

Seok Hoon offered Ji Sook to play the con that will change her life by marrying Choi Min Woo (Ju Ji Hoon). Guiding her intently on her cover, she treads on a dangerous play to a husband who can’t be trifled mindlessly.

But soon enough, she develops pure feelings toward Min Woo and works on reversing her life that has been mostly controlled by other people and her misfortunes.

Highlights

Well-contrived plot

For once, viewers get to see a melodrama with a rich family cast not going all war with excessive evil plots to claim the rein of a company. They did it within the members as what I perceived the rich and famous should have done in reality.

Having dysfunctional characters, Mask entices by how much it deconstructed the main leads’ motivations, frailties and hair-pulling moments on what they are willing to give because of greed, vengeance and sacrificial love.

Swerving from the musty weep fest trademark of melodrama, Mask raised its fight club banner through lies, devious plots, and ruthless counter attacks for reasons of being blindly in love and the thirst to achieve a payback.

Mask Kdrama

Well-explained character motivations

Mask features a solid cast who rose up to the occasion and gave meaningful portrayals to the very best of the wicked side and better versions of their characters. What drew me most about the series is the impeccable confrontations of the four main leads linked by painful love, betrayal and blood ties.

Strong in sashaying their wicked schemes, the villains efficiently strengthened the tension in the narrative. Though not hitting poignant moments for their ulterior motives, the supporting leads created a lingering impact in the end. They raise a definitive question on how much can someone go in the name of love.

Ji Sook transitioned her image from a total push-over to a woman who knows her worth.  Her character as a focal point of the story, pushed the problem in a coherent challenge. It bring out the people surrounding her in a balanced struggle of destroying and protecting her.

Trapped in a heartbreaking love situation, Min Woo reconciled the pain by surrendering to love. Amidst the betrayal, his pure love for Ji Sook sealed the blissful redemption of the story.

Series Afterthoughts

I enjoyed the theatrics and the melodrama clichés because Mask in its entirety was not sporadically sketched and was focused to the penultimate closure. I like it when dramas are overbearing because there’s an established premise to support it. That was the case for this Ju Ji Hoon and Soo Ae love pairing.

I got affected on the heavy scenes, but they did not overwhelm me with exhausting episode weep runs. Truly, what I perceived melodrama should have evolved to since the weepfest days in early 2000s.

Recommendation

If you want a serious K-Drama watch, then this will fill your craving. The romance, the intrigue, the annoyance, the power plays were well-conceived and executed leaving a sense of fulfillment if you will sit on it for a binge.

I even prepared myself with some tissue rolls for the tear party because it was Soo Ae and Joo Ji Hoon. But I was put at the edge of my seat because I was cheering earnestly for Ji Sook to claim her purpose. Ultimately, she defied her old self to emancipate herself in the villain’s grip and be with the man she loved without secrets and lies.

5 Historical K-Dramas Of 2020

Are you a fan of historical drama? Last year, there was plenty of exciting ones such as "Haechi", "Mung Bean Flower", "My Country", “Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung”, “Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency”, "The Tale of Nokdu", etc.

However, in 2020, there are very little historical dramas. This is sad news for those of us who like the genres. Hopefully more dramas will be announced for the second half of 2020.

Here are 4 historical dramas that start(ed) in 2020.

Aired

"Kingdom season 2"

5 Historical K-Dramas Of 2020

Netflix

When: From Mar. 13

Cast: Ju JiHoon, Bae DooNa, Ryu SeungRyong

Summary: The story revolves around a crown prince of the Joseon dynasty attempting to uncover the truth about what happened to his father while fighting off zombies and internal political strife amongst the ruling elite.

Why watch?: Korean zombie in a historical setting is definitely a must-see for people who like thriller and horror. It makes the story different from previous zombies' story. Moreover, the storyline is entertaining in both seasons.

For more information, and characters’ descriptions, you can check our cast and summary here.

Small-Screen Returns of Actors Who Have Been Dominating Since Late 2000s to Early 2010s

You've probably seen the hype these past few days about the actors who have been on newly released K-dramas. Now, we narrowed it down to seven lead actors who have been making huge comebacks on the small screen.

First on the list is Ju Ji Hoon from the series "Hyena." This K-drama is about the rivalry of two elite attorneys, in which one is from a well-known law firm and the other is from a small town. This instantly sparked intrigue because viewers spilled (spoiler alert!) that even in the first episode, there is already a plot twist. Not only is the storyline fascinating, but the visuals of the series are also aesthetically pleasing.

Looking for a K-drama bae? These handsome oppas will steal your heart

The South Korean standard of beauty for male K-pop idols is not for everyone, this we'll say. K-drama leading men are different, however.

More masculine and rugged, with some quietly gentle, they seem to get even more attractive as the years passed.

Below, we list some of our favourite K-drama oppas, if you're looking for someone to give your heart to.

Ju Ji-hoon

PHOTO: Netflix

His role as the reluctant crown prince forced to honour a betrothal to a commoner in the 2006 romantic comedy series Princess Hours catapulted this model-actor to stardom.

Ji-hoon went on to star in the 2007 revenge drama The Devil and 2008 film Antique before he enlisted in the army in February 2010. His post-military acting career seemed to focus more on the silver screen as he made his mark in productions like Asura: The City of Madness, the two-part fantasy epic Along With the Gods, and thriller films The Spy Gone North and Dark Figure of Crime.

Recently, the 38-year-old made a stunning return to TV with the Netflix zombie period drama Kingdom (where he played another crown prince with smouldering good looks), fantasy legal drama Item, and another legal drama Hyena.

It's been reported that he's currently in talks to star as the lead of upcoming film Silence, which depicts the events that occur after a mysterious beast escapes during a car accident.

Status: Single, no recent reports on his dating life after his break-up with South Korean singer Ga-in in 2017.
