One more reason to watch “East of Eden”

Feb 22nd, 2008 by javabeans

kimbum4.jpg

I’ll admit I’m not much enticed by upcoming MBC drama East of Eden, partly because it’s slated for 50 episodes, and that’s just too long for me. Sometimes I’ll catch parts of a long-running daily show or sitcom because those are easy to skip episodes and still remain relatively current; but a 50-episode drama is in that nebulous territory of requiring commitment to follow but being dangerously susceptible to slow-paced, tedious storylines. East of Eden is described as “the story of two men’s intertwining fates and revenges after they’re born on the same day in the same hospital.”

ssh.jpg

Pretty boy (pretty man?) Song Seung Heon seems to have finally settled on a comeback drama — he’s had a few almost-beens, but they didn’t pan out — with East of Eden, and now young actor Kim Bum has been cast in the role of his younger character (in his high school days). The character is described as having witnessed his father’s death in his younger days, and swears to avenge it. Previously a caring, warm-hearted youngster, anger over his father’s death changes him, and he eventually grows up to become the right-hand man to the country’s foremost casino owner.

I thought Kim Bum was absolutely adorable in the uneven family sitcom Unstoppable High Kick, and hope he gets to explore the character’s transformation (before his role gets handed off to Song). What do you think? Is there a resemblance?

The drama is produced by Green Snake Media, with PD Kim Jin Man at its helm (Island, Really Really Like You) and written by Na Yeon Sook (Slums / Dal-dong-nae, Ordinary People). Also cast are Jo Min Ki, Yoo Dong Geun, and Lee Mi Sook; it will air in June.

[star Past & Present] Lee Mi-sook Almost 50 Years Old, Beautiful As Ever

original source: chosun (2008.01.17 15:02)

Lee Mi-sook debuted in 1978 after winning at "Lotte Beauty Contest", she officially entered the film world with movie "Thoughtless Momo" in 1979. She then appeared in many works (both TV and films) which won her prizes at major award ceremonies every year.

At the peak of her career in 1987, she announced her wedding to plastic surgeon Hong Sung-ho; this news was a hot topic. She disappeared from showbiz in the 90's.

There's a saying that "Marriage may mean the shortened career of female artists." Lee Mi-sook's situation seems to confirm this point. However, she returned (very high profile) with "An Affair" in 1998. This movie created a strong reaction in society at that time, she portrayed a middle-aged woman in a fateful love story.

Following "An Affair", she tried different roles such as a warrior in "The Legend of Gingko" and a boss in "Oh! Lala Sisters".

Her sexy image in movie "Untold Scandal" made it impossible for people to believe that she was born in the 60's.....

Last year, Lee Mi-sook ended her 20-year marriage; she became big news once again. She and her ex-husband remain good friends who care for each other. Nearly 50 years old, she's the idol of middle aged women with her free spirit {?}.

Lee Mi-sook made many men's heart fluttered in the 80's, she exudes more elegance and matured charms as time goes by.

Is the 25 billion won grand production 'East of Eden' starring Song Seung-Heon the 'Hour Glass' of the 21st century?

[02-14-2008]

'East of Eden (Script: Na Yeon-Sook/ PD Kim Ji-Man)' with hallyu star Song Seung-Heon as main cast is a megadrama with 25 bilion won (~ $25 million usd) invested in production cost. 'East of Eden' is the 2008 project of ambition for Chorokbaem Media, which also produced 'Jumong' and 'Unstoppable Highkick', and upon casting Song Seung-Heon in starring role, and actors like Yoo Dong-Geun as main cast ensemble, the drama will go into production in March.

The producers plan to film throughout Asia, including Hong Kong, Macao, China, Japan, as they paint an unconventional modern history of Korea from the timeline of 1960s to 2000s. 'East of Eden' draws on the story of two men, who were born on the same day at the same time at the same hospital, and their crossed destiny and revenge.

This story will go back to the 1960s, the era of major student protesting activities. Lee Ki-Cheol, a front-runner of the student protests is thrown into guilt when his lover's older brother dies instead of him, and he arrives at the coal-minining region of Kang-Won provence. There he tries to stop the evil-acts of Shin Tae-Hwan (Yoo Dong-Geun) of the TaeBaek coal mining station, by organizing a labor union but he is eradicated at the hands of Shin Tae-Hwan. Lee Ki-Cheol's eldest son, Lee Dong-Cheol (Song Seung-Heon) witnesses the event and vows to seek revenge.

Meanwhile, a nurse at TaeBaek hospital, Miae, who suffered violation from Shin Tae-Hwan switches Shin's newborn son with Lee Ki-Cheol's son. Thus, Lee Ki-Cheol's son grows up as Shin Tae-Hwan's son Shin Myeong-Hoon, while Shin Tae-Hwan's son grows up as Lee Ki-Cheol's son Lee Dong-Wook.

Lee Dong-Wook is recruited into his older brother Lee Dong-Cheol's revenge plan over their father's death, and Dong-Wook enrolls in law school at the Seoul University, and becomes a prosecutor. Meanwhile, Shin Myeong-Hoon is raised as heir of a conglomerate, and Lee Dong-Cheol goes over to Hong Kong to begin a new life as the right-hand man of a Korean casino godfather. This is the intense epic centered around these characters who realize their fates have been switched, and the events of modern history intertwined with their lives.

On the account of prosecutor, organized hooligans, and conglomerate storyline, 'East of Eden' seems similar to the most popular drama of the 90s, 'Hour Glass,' the Kim Jong-Hak and Song Jina combo work. However, if 'Hour Glass' centered on the pains of an era, 'East of Eden' roots itself on the blood ties that are peculiar to Koreans.

Producers reveal this drama is a work of humanism with its basis set on the love and devotion of family, the sticky blood ties, and the sentiments that are peculiar to Koreans. It is set to air through MBC this June.

Synopsis

The Sandglass (The Hourglass) is a portrayal of two young men who are best friends and grow up during one of Korea's politically tumultuous periods, the 1970's up to the 1980's. Tae-soo (Choi Min Soo), tough and loyal, grows up to become a gangster and Woo-suk (Park Sang Won), smart with firm moral values, grows up to become a prosecutor. Hye-rin (Ko Hyun Jung), a beautiful and spirited daughter of a very wealthy casino owner, is a classmate of Woo-suk in college. Hye-rin is introduced to Tae-soo via Woo-suk and they subsequently fall in love.

One unforgettable subject that's dealt in the drama is the 1980 Kwangju rebellion when the head of the military junta that took over Korea after the assasination of President Park Chung-hee, General Chun Doo-hwan, sent paratroopers into Kwangju to put down the rebellion. What happened was the subsequent massacre of hundreds of innocent people. The horrific scenes based on true accounts, of those people being murdered, touched off a deep sense of shock and grief for the Koreans at that time (the mid 90's Korea still had not come to terms with what happened after governments muzzled the free speech). After this drama went on air, there were more films that were made dealing with this very subject, such as The Petal (1996) and Peppermint Candy (2000). It also put ex-President Chun Doo-hwan who was responsible for the massacre, in jail. You can probably say that Moreshigae was the turning point for the young budding democracy in Korea.
