Now We Are Breaking Up is a slow melodrama, usually not preferred by Korea’s older generations.  So, naturally, The Red Sleeves will have higher ratings. It’s a period piece selected by older generations, and it also starts much-loved veteran actor Lee Deok-Hwa.  However, amongst 20-49 viewers, NWABU has higher ratings than TRS.  I guarantee you the advertisers are paying much higher fees for NWABU than TRS.  Given that everything Song Hye Kyo wears gets sold out, I do not think the advertising fees will decrease throughout the drama, and SBS will make a hefty profit out of this drama.

Moreover, NWABU is very popular globally, at VIU and Viki.  It’s Okay To Not Be Okay, another melodrama and a global phenomenon and a critical darling, only generated an average viewership of 5.49% in Korea. And this was the first drama after military service from Kim Soo-Hyun.  Nevertheless, another melodrama, starting with two top young actors, Han So Hee and Song Kang, the ratings were between 1-2%.

Another point to make s that if Song Hye Kyo were not the lead of this drama, the ratings probably would have been between 3 to 5%.  And it also would not have experienced the global success that it’s having right now.  The director stated at the press conference that he must have saved a country in his past life because he got to work with Song Hye Kyo.  The writer and the director are fortunate that Song Hye Kyo agreed to do this drama.

Song Hye Kyo will next start in a dark, revenge drama, The Glory, written by Kim Eun Sook for Netflix.  It's not going to be shown in Korea TV, so it will be much darker and violent than allowable on TV.   She will be able to showcase a completely different side to her acting.  Thereafter, she may be doing a thriller with The Descendent of Sun and Jirisan director.  Her status as one of the top actresses in Korea will probably remain for while.
