Discussing Linux (for those who have it, want it or want to know more about it). I'll update it as more is added.

There's various distributions for Linux. Each one comes with it's own set of graphical themes, set of software etc. The two most popular for people starting out would be Ubuntu or Mandriva with the GNOME desktop.

How To's

Most Popular Distributions (no particular order)

  • Mandriva
  • Ubuntu
  • Gentoo
  • Knoppix
  • Debian
  • openSUSE
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux
  • Slackerware
  • Linspire

I get a lot of stares when people see my laptop and what I can do on it =). There's a lot of cool tricks; one of them is the Desktop Cube, as shown here:

Video Demonstrations

  • - Compiz-Fusion Demonstration
  • - Compiz-Fusion w/ WinXP on Mandriva 2008

There's a lot you can do in linux (as shown in the videos) and it's real cool =). You can make your desktop behave like Windows Vista, Windows XP, Mac OSX/Leopard OSX etc. and even do more very versatile.

There's a few distributions out there that allow you to try/run Linux using a CD or a USB Flash Drive =). Mandriva 2008 has one called Mandriva Linux One 2008. You download the CD ISO, burn it and then insert it and play around with Mandriva/Linux without having to install a single thing. It runs off the CD =).

I have Windows Vista Home Premium and Mandriva 2008 on dual boot for my laptop =). This allows me to switch between both operating systems.

I personally use Mandriva 2008 with the KDE Desktop -> Compiz-Fusion for the 3D Desktop. I use it for coding, running a server and messing around in.

actually, if you don't use your computer to play games, you could just run WinXP in a virtual machine with VMWare server, which is the setup I have for my mom, she runs Ubuntu but she can just use XP whenever she wants from the VM.

And Ubuntu is by far the most popular distro these days.

But Linux systems suck for games.

You can get a Live CD from Ubuntu for free. Even the postage is paid for. But one down side is, it takes forever to load it from the CD so i tried it once and left is as that.

I think I'm going to dual boot Ubuntu and XP, seeing that I dont play any games at all.

I see they have better and more visual guides now than when I started to use it. I love how customizable Linux was, but it was just a pain in the butt to me sometimes. Right now, I need XP on my laptop full time. I'll be coming back to Linux when they support more drivers.

I am a noob at linux. Why are there different distributions? Are they like versions?

Because every once in a while, some talented (possibly, not so talented) programmer sits down and says, "Hey, I don't like this distribution of Linux, I'm going to go make a better one", and since Linux is open source (eh... for the most part) and free, he just downloads the code and types away, and that is how distributions are born, or something along those lines.

Just get Ubuntu, it's the user friendliest at the moment. The only distro I've been using these days is Back Track 3 off a USB drive, hehe.

i just installed ubuntu and fedora using parallels on my imac, i've never been so confused lol

ubuntu seems to be the more "stable," fedora lags a bit...also, have anyone tried to run linux using parallels? i can't seem to increase the screen resolution, it stays at 1024x768, and there's no option to increase the screen resolution in the menu either

I actually sat down and took the time to figure things out, and once I did I was like "holy crap this is 100 times better than Windows"

I love how its so customizable, the things I can do with it, Compiz Fusion is so friggin eye appealing

Thanks.

This just makes me want to get the EEE 901 w/ Linux even more to try it out.
