Hwang Soo Kyung, Jung Eun Ah, Lee Geum Hee, Noh Hyun Jung, Shin Young Il, Yoo Jung Hyun, Kim Kyung Ran, Kang Soo Jung.. With the exception of Kang Soo Jung and Noh Hyun Jung, I'm sure these names don't ring a bell to most of us, but these are household names in Korea. They are just a few of the many celebrated announcers in Korea.

It's hard to think announcers can be so famous and well known since most of us don't even know the names of the people who give us news on our local TV stations, but announcers in Korea are a different matter. How to explain.. you know how Naver is known for it's search engine? They list the top 50 searched singers, actors, dramas, movies and so on. They also have an exclusive top 50 searched list for announcers. It's a little weird, but announcers in Korea are celebrities in their own right.

아나운서 - Announcer

First, we need to distinguish the different types of announcers..

There are REAL announcers and then there are announcers as entertainers (more on that below).

The announcers on these kinds of shows are the real deal.

오락프로 MC - Variety Show MC

Variety shows include game, talk, and entertainment news shows. They're the shows you watch for entertainment, the ones where you can see your favorite stars on.

Each of the 3 major stations, MBC, KBS, and SBS have a daily entertainment news show that airs in the morning and they all have an (ex) announcer as a host.

KBS Nam Hee Suk, Choi Eun Kyung's Yuhyoomanman (남희석 최은경의 여유만만)

Choi Eun Kyung is a former KBS announcer now freelancing on all the stations.

MBC Lee Jae Yong, Jung Sun Hee's Good Day (이재용 정선희의 기분좋은 날)

Lee Jae Yong is an MBC announcer.

SBS Kim Seung Hyun, Jung Eun Ah's Good Morning (김승현 정은아의 좋은 아침)

Jung Eun Ah is a former KBS announcer now freelancing on all the stations.

Sang Sang Plus (상상플러스)

Sang Sang Plus is famous for its announcers. The "Ice Princess" Noh Hyun Jung was the original announcer on the show, but she left when she got married and was replaced by Baek Seung Joo announcer. Baek Seung Joo left due to conflicting work schedules and was replaced by the current announcer, Choi Song Hyun.

Sponge (스펀지)

Sponge is also known to also have an announcer as one of the main hosts. Hwang Soo Kyung, Kim Kyung Ran, Go Min Jung and other announcers have filled that MC spot. The show made a few changes recently and retitled itself as Sponge 2.0, with a new female MC, Jung Eun Ah, an ex-KBS announcer.

Vitamin (비타민)

Jung Eun Ah, a former KBS announcer, is the female MC of this show.

환상의 짝꿍 (Fantasy Best Friend)

One of the main MCs is MBC announcer, Oh Sang Jin.

Happy Time (해피타임)

Choi Eun Kyung, a former KBS announcer, is the cohost of MBC's NG show, Happy Time.

There is a gray line that exists from having announcers on shows for MC purposes vs. entertainment purposes. For instance, the announcers on the shows listed above, like Sponge, Vitamin, Fantasy Best Friend, and the e-news shows, are for the most part seen as MCs who guide the show.

Then there are variety shows that feature announcers for entertainment value. The announcers on the shows listed below are a main fixture on their respective shows, but they're mostly seen as being on the show for entertainment purposes.

The Korean media recently coined a new term for these announcers acting as entertainers:

아나테이너 (아나운서+엔터테이너) - Annatainer (announcer+entertainer)

Gipizigi (지피지기)

The epitome of "anatainer" for MBC. It features 4 MBC announcers, Seo Hyun Jin, Choi Hyun Jung, Sohn Jung Eun, and Moon Ji Ae. Not sure what exactly it is they do since the show keeps changing it's concept. With it's low ratings, we'll see how much longer the show will last..

Miraculous Victory and Defeat (기적의 승부사)

The epitome of "anatainer" for SBS. The show features an entertainer team vs. announcer team competing in various physical events.

Heroine 6 I mean Hi 5 (하이파이브)

Hi 5, the half as good replacement of Heroine 6, recently introduced a new member, Lee Jung Min announcer. She's Kang Soo Jung ver. 2.0

Star Golden Bell (스타골든벨)

Star Golden Bell, made popular by Noh Hyung announcer, but she left this show as well when she got married and was replaced by the current female announcer, Park Ji Yoon.

프리랜서 아나운서 - Freelancing Announcers

(not all of them, but to name a few)

Whatever station you are an announcer on, you can only appear on programs of that station. KBS announcers on KBS programs, MBC announcers on MBC programs, SBS announcer on SBS programs. That is, unless you freelance. Freelancing allows announcers to appear on all the stations.

For example, Kang Soo Jung started out as an announcer on KBS. Her appearances on variety programs like Heroine 5 and 6 escalated her popularity and she branched out on other variety programs on KBS. But that wasn't enough so she made the decision to freelance this year. That's why you can see her on SBS Yashimmanman now and she's starting her own cable show early next year.

Im Sung Min is also a former KBS announcer. She was also featured as MCs on popular KBS variety programs during her announcer days. But her dream was to be an actress and chose to freelance so she could act in dramas on other stations. This year she was in the successful SBS drama Catch A Kangnam Mother.

Not all announcers who choose to freelance stop working as announcers. Many of them continue to do announcer work and/or work at the station they started out on. Freelancing gives them more options, it widens their choices on what kind of work they want to do and where they want to do it. It's not an easy decision to freelance and very hard to cross over successfully, so only a handful of announcers make this choice.

Also, announcers are not exclusive to each category. They do news/sisa programs and do entertainment shows and may also be freelancing. It's just that I noticed those who concentrate more on their announcer career tend to stick to news related programs and appear less on entertainment shows.

Park Ji Yoon and Choi Dong Seok are KBS 동기 announcers.

동기 means they're of the same class or same year.

Every year, every TV station inducts a new class of announcers and they are considered 동기.

They're also given a number to associate what class (기) they are, kind of like saying you graduated in 2007 so you would be considered class of '07.

Park Ji Yoon and Choi Dong Seok debuted in 2004 and are KBS 30기 (30th). Choi Song Hyun announcer debuted in 2006 and is 32기.

The number 기 is different for each station.. like 2007 KBS announcers are 33기, but 2007 SBS announcers are 15기 and I'm not sure what 기 MBS is at now, but I know KBS is the longest running and their announcers go way back ealier than any other station.

Freelancing, former KBS announcer, Kang Soo Jung is an MC on the new MBC variety show, King of Study (공부의 제왕).

This is her first MC job on an MBC show and her first episode aired 12/22

May be off-topic but does anyone know who is the announcer with clearest diction and speak the slowest, doesnt matter male or female ? The info wud be most useful to those learning Korean language. I usually listen/watch the entertainment news but the announcer speaks too fast and diction is not the clearest.

^ They have to take exams to get accepted. It's not uncommon for people to take the exam multiple times before getting in or taking exams from multiple stations.

IMO, a very risque and uncalled for performance from Seo Hyeon Jin. I understand announcers don't want to be (and shouldn't be) stereotyped as being a nerdy, stiff bunch, but this kind of performance crossed the line from being entertaining to being distasteful. I think the same of the announcers' performance at the KBS Entertainment Awards.. it was unpleasant to say the least and it definitely tarnished their image as announcers.

This is currently a hot topic in the news.. har har.. MBC announcer Moon Ji Ae, who rose to fast fame the past year, slipped up on camera. During a broadcast on a news program, she laughed during the closing ment.

This may sound harmless, but apparently it's a very big deal. During a news broadcast with stories about deaths and other serious matters, it's very distasteful to be laughing. These kind of incidents, where announcers or reporters are caught on camera laughing, giggling, or doing anything they're not supposed to be doing are labeled 방송사고, a broadcast mishap. They're looked down upon and netizens don't let these things go easily..

The situtaion is worse for Moon Ji Ae because her popularity has rose in the public spotlight the past year, but not for announcer related work like news shows, but for her appearances on variety/entertainemtn programs.

As I mentioned before, there is a gray line between announcers being real announcers like on the news vs. announcers as entertainers. Moon Ji Ae has definitely crossed that line the past year and has become one of the defining people of the term "annatainer" (아나테이너).

Netizens are giving her a harder time for her recent broadcast mishap, saying things like 뉴스와 예능의 차이도 모르는 것이냐.. things along the lines of, "she can't tell the difference of being on a news show and being on a variety show"

I actually agree with the netizens.. I'm fine with announcers appearing on variety shows as MCs and/or guests, but when you're doing your real job, being an announcer and giving the news, get it together. News programs are obviously not variety shows and as an announcer, you need to take your job seriously.

By the way, that MBC announcer special of 너나들이 is such a ripoff of the Chuseok special KBS did..

It was hosted by Lee Hwee Jae and Lee Hyeok Jak and it was basically a one hour talk show with KBS announcers, getting to know a little of their fun side. The KBS special is so much better than the MBC ripoff.

Announcers are the people who give news, MCs are people who host shows. The roles overlap when announcers are also hosts of a show. Take for example Park Ji Yoon announcer on KBS Star Golden Bell.. she's an announcer who also hosts game shows so she can also be called an MC. But not all female MCs are announcers. Like Hyun Young, she's a variety show MC, but she is not an announcer. Kang Soo Jung, who is an MC and hosts variety shows WAS an announcer, but she stopped all announcer work and is called an MC now. Hope that cleared things up.

I posted earlier about Moon Ji Ae's incident on live news the past week. She was suspended from new programs the following day. There are no reports on how long her suspension will last, but she is allowed to continue to appear on the variety shows she is an MC on like Gipizigi.

Kang Soo Jung, a former KBS announcer, is engaged to a Harvard business graduate. The wedding will be in March in Hong Kong, where the groom is located.

In case you didn't know..

Former KBS announcers Kang Soo Jung and Noh Hyeon Jung.

They aren't the root of annatainers, since there were announcers as variety show hosts before them and far more respected announcers than them, but these 2 announcers are noted as the beginning point of the recent boom of annatainers.

Noh Hyeon Jung, known as the "Ice Princess" on shows, gained famed as the MCs on popular variety shows Sang Sang Plus and Star Golden Bell. These two shows were really popular and highest in ratings when she was the host, but after she left, ratings for both shows went down, especially for Sang Sang Plus. IMO, Noh Hyeon Jung is a far more respected annatiner than any of the recent, popular annatainers like Moon Ji Ae or Choi Song Hyeon, because while she did show a fun side, she never sacrificed her image.. in most cases, annatainers don't appear very much on news programs, (even though they're announcers) but they mostly do variety programs. However, Noh Hyeon Jung, while being very popular on variety shows, was also a good anchorwoman and she was known to juggle both jobs very well. I don't know how to explain it well, but she was never the type to do a funny dance for the sake of laughs or getting more attention and she was never vain about her fame, which explains how she could suddenly quit her job at the peak of her career. Yup, even though she was the top announcer of her time, she stopped all work when she got married, which is not a surprise since most women in Korea, whether entertainers or not, quit their day jobs when they get married to elite businessmen.

Kang Soo Jung rose to fame the same time as Noh Hyeon Jung (they were both under KBS) through her variety show Heroine 5 and 6. She was known more for her appearances on variety shows than being an announcer on the news, which explains why she quit being an announcer and chose to freelance so she could be an MC on all the channels, not just KBS. But unlike Noh Hyeon Jung, she's going to continue her day job after she gets married.

I'm very surprised and saddened by the news of Kang Soo Jung's engagement. I seriously thought Kang Soo Jung and Shin Jung Hwan would have made the best couple. He makes her laugh like no one else and I think he has always carried a torch for her. I was really rooting for them.

It seems she wants to keep any details about her wedding and future husband on the dl, unlike most other celebs who hold elaborate press conferences. Former KBS announcer Kang Soo Jung got married on the 15th in Hong Kong. Although she seems to be keeping information about her husband and her wedding very private, she will continue her MC career and not retire, unlike most other announcers who get married to businessmen, ala Noh Hyun Jung.

KBS announcer Park Ji Yoon is handing in her resignation letter! Probably known best as being the MC of KBS Star Golden Bell, Park Ji Yoon has announced she will be quitting KBS, thus leaving all her MC/announcer jobs. This comes at a time when the major networks are in spring cleaning mode, shifting shows around and/or canceling shows as well for new spring schedule. Park Ji Yoon will be leaving several shows, among them Star Golden Bell and Classic Odyssey.

The resignation comes as a shock since Park Ji Yoon is one of the top star announcers right now and has been working for a little less than 5 years. But she gives reason that since she has started at KBS, she has been constantly working and had no time to rest. There are also other reasons for her resignation, such as her long term relationship with fellow KBS announcer Choi Dong Seok, in which people are expecting the 2 to get married sometime this year. Though no definite plans for a wedding have been made, Park Ji Yoon announcer has stated it is in the future and explains it would be an obstacle to work together when they get married.

People are also suspecting Park Ji Yoon is resigning so she can freelance, given her popularity as an MC. She says that is not the case and she has not thought about freelancing and truly says she is taking the time off to rest and start other endeavors such as taking a cooking class.

IMO, I think it's so true people like her need to rest and take time off. Announcers and MCs have to work day in and day out and don't get much time off for personal vacations, especially if you have to conduct news every night. Unlike U.S. shows, Korean shows don't have a hiatus period, instead they have to produce a new show every week. So it's good reason for her to take time off to rest since she's been working her butt off since she became an announcer. But I also have reason to suspect she's taking the time off to prepare herself for marriage. You know, in Korea there's a lot of preparations for a bride, especially in the home-making areas. Mother in laws don't seem to be too fond of daughter in laws who work too much.. Anyways, I also believe if and when Park Ji Yoon returns to work as announcer/MC, she'll definitely freelance so she can work on other stations.
