'Parasite' has collected 55 awards at 57 film fests

2020para.jpg

SEOUL, Feb. 7 (Yonhap) -- Bong Joon-ho's sensational black comedy "Parasite," nominated in six categories, including best picture, at the upcoming Oscars, has been invited to 57 film festivals and award events across the world, and collected 55 trophies, its production company CJ ENM said Friday.

In May last year, the film about class division through two extreme families embraced the highest prize of Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, becoming a massive hit in 2019 and starting its awards-winning streak.

A month later, it won the top prize at the 2019 Sydney Film Festival, while actor Song Kang-ho, who played the father of a down-and-out family in the film, received the Excellence Award at this year's Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland in August.

It also received awards at film festivals in North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, including the Calgary International Film Festival, Ulaanbaatar International Film Festival in Mongolia and the Slemani International Film Festival in Iraq.

Since it was released stateside in October, "Parasite" has received rave reviews and critical acclaim from film critics in the United States.

Entering the U.S. awards season in the runup to the Oscars, it nearly swept top prizes like best picture, best screenplay and foreign language film given by local critics associations, including those in Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto and San Diego.

In 2020, "Parasite" continued its bullish rally. It took best foreign language film at the Golden Globes, marking the first South Korean film to win an award at the event arranged by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Days later, it earned six nods at this year's Oscars in best picture, best director, best screenplay, best editing, best production design and best international feature film.

At the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the film became the first non-English language movie to win the top honor of outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture, following two titles at the Critics Choice Awards.

Director Bong received the best original screenplay award at both the Writers Guild of America Awards and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards.

As "Parasite" has raked in a series of major titles in key awards considered strong indicators of the Academy Awards slated for Sunday, the best picture category is regarded as a battle between "Parasite" and "1917," the World War I movie by Sam Mendes.

CJ ENM said its U.S. campaign led by director Bong has successfully gone through the awards season and made a buzz since October.

The 92nd Academy Awards, given annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday (U.S. time).

After Oscars, ‘Parasite’ stars are booked and busy: Now beloved at home and abroad, the actors have a lot on their plates this year

After snatching up four Oscars, including Best Picture, at the Academy Awards on Sunday night, the cast of “Parasite” quickly became some of the biggest stars in Hollywood and all around the world.

After winning their awards, Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong, Choi Woo-shik, Park So-dam, Lee Jung-eun, Jang Hye-jin and Park Myung-hoon mingled alongside Hollywood megastars such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Renee Zellweger and fit right in with the crowd.

The cast returned to Korea on Tuesday morning, and even after a 13-hour flight, they were beaming with pride, smiling for the photographers who were there to greet them. After the whirlwind success of “Parasite,” naturally many people are wondering what’s next for the film’s stars.

The most attention is on Song, a major star in Korea in his own right, who has come to be known internationally as director Bong Joon-ho’s muse for the number of films he has done with the award-winning director. “Parasite” was Song’s fourth lead role in a Bong film after “Memories of Murder” (2003), “The Host” (2006) and “Snowpiercer” (2013).

When asked if he was willing to work with Bong for a fifth time at a press conference after the Academy Awards, Song sarcastically replied that he was “not so sure.”

“[The characters I played] were so tiring. I had to live in an underground apartment and had to get soaked in the rain. Maybe if the next character is like the CEO [that Lee Sun-kyun played], I’ll think about it,” Song said.

Song’s next film is “Emergency Announcement” (translated) from director Han Jae-rim. The disaster movie is set on an airplane on high alert due to an epidemic happening outside. It’s the actor’s third collaboration with Han after “The Show Must Go On” (2007) and “The Face Reader” (2013). Anticipation for the film is high as it stars Song and actor Lee Byung-hun in the lead roles.

Many are also curious about what’s in store for the young stars of “Parasite” Choi Woo-shik and Park So-dam.

Spoiler

Choi’s schedule for the rest of the year is packed, starting with director Yoon Sung-hyun’s upcoming thriller “Time to Hunt,” set to be released in the local box office on Feb. 26. Choi appears alongside actors Lee Je-hoon, Ahn Jae-hong and Park Jung-min in Yoon’s second feature film after his widely acclaimed “Bleak Night” (2011).

The crime film “The Policeman’s Lineage” from director Lee Kyu-man is still in production and is scheduled to be released later this year. Choi stars in the film with Cho Jin-woong.

He will also appear in the highly-anticipated “Wonderland” from director Kim Tae-yong, which is set to begin filming later this year. The film will star big names Bae Suzy, Park Bo-gum and Tang Wei. The movie is set in “Wonderland,” a virtual world where people get to see loved ones that they have lost using artificial intelligence. Choi will play a mediator of the land.

The actor has also reportedly received an offer from American film distribution company A24 to play the male lead in the upcoming romantic film “Past Lives” from director Celine Song. His agency Management Soop released a simple statement last month saying that the actor was deliberating the offer. The film is about childhood sweethearts from Korea meeting again later in life. Choi, who grew up in Canada and speaks English, may be the “Parasite” actor who would be the most comfortable taking on a role in an American production.

Park So-dam’s next film is next month’s “Fukuoka” from director Zhang Lu. The movie is about two men and a girl named So-dam (played by Park) who end up traveling together. The two men are former friends who loved the same woman 28 years ago. They are played by veteran actors Kwon Hye-hyo and Yoon Je-moon.

She will also appear in the upcoming crime action film “Special Delivery” (translated). Park plays the lead role of a driver named Eun-ha, who is willing to deliver anything as long as her customers can pay her cash. In the film, Park is reunited with child actor Jung Hyun-joon, her “Parasite” co-star who played Da-song, the Park family’s youngest child.

The film’s other stars have been keeping busy working on various television dramas and films as well.

Cho received rave reviews from viewers of the KBS drama series “Woman of 9.9 Billion,” which wrapped up last month. In the series, Cho played a role that would be entirely unfamiliar to people who only know her as the naive stay-at-home mother Yeon-gyo in “Parasite.” She portrayed Seo-yeon, a woman suffering from domestic violence who one day comes upon a large sum of money that she uses to start a new life with.

Spoiler

Lee Sun-kyun is preparing to start filming the movie “King Maker.” In the film, he will play a strategist, a hidden but important figure who sets the atmosphere for the presidential campaign of aspiring politician Kim Woon-beom (played by Seol Kyung-gu). Lee recently wrapped the JTBC drama series “Diary of a Prosecutor” and also contributed his voice to the comedy “Mr. Zoo: The Missing VIP,” playing a goat.

Jang is currently appearing alongside Park Myung-hoon in the popular tvN drama series “Crash Landing on You.” Jang plays the mother of main character Seo-dan, and Park plays her uncle. As they come from an elite North Korean family, some viewers hardly recognize the duo as they went through a radical transition from their shocking portrayal of the poor couple living in the rich family’s home in “Parasite.” Park will also appear in “The Policeman’s Lineage” with Choi and is preparing to start shooting the films “Save Us from the Evil” (translated) by director Hong Won-chan and “Vacation” by director Yook Sang-hyo.

However, it seems like the title of busiest actor among the eight belongs to Lee Jung-eun. Lee wasn’t even able to participate in the press conference after the Oscars because she had to go straight back to Korea due to her shooting schedule.

She currently appears in the Netflix drama series “My Holo Love” which was released last Friday and is currently shooting the KBS2 drama series “I Went Away Once” (translated), which will start airing next month.

Lee’s face was seemingly always on television last year as she appeared in the JTBC drama series “The Light in Your Eyes,” the OCN series “Hell Is Other People” and “When the Camellia Blooms” on KBS. Each series was a hit, and viewers showered the actor with praise and compliments for her moving and haunting performance.

This year, viewers will get to see Lee back on the big screen as well. The actor will appear in the historical drama “Jasaneobo” by director Lee Joon-ik and also in director Park Ji-wan’s debut feature film “The Day I Die” (translated). The actor will star alongside Kim Hye-soo and Kim Sun-young in the film.

Filmmaker Bong Joon-ho’s dark comedy “Parasite” not only ruled the Oscars with its four wins, but also dominated social media, being the subject of more tweets than any other film from the event.

“Parasite” won four awards at the Oscars: best picture, best director, best international feature film and best original screenplay. It was the first foreign language movie to win best picture in the 92-year history of the annual film event.

20200211000730_0.jpg

Since Jan. 13, when the film’s six Academy Award nominations were announced, “Parasite” has been mentioned in more than 1.6 million tweets worldwide. The next-most-tweeted-about nominees, in order, were “Joker,” “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood,” “Jojo Rabbit” and “Toy Story 4.”

Twitter also announced the top five most-tweeted-about moments of the 2020 Oscars.

“Parasite” topped the list again, generating more than 500,000 tweets around the world, when it won best picture. The moment Bong won the best director award for “Parasite” came in third place.

The moment that Joaquin Phoenix won the best actor award for “Joker” generated the next-biggest number of tweets, and the moment when Renee Zellweger won best actress for “Judy” was fourth. Hip-hop artist Eminem’s surprise performance came in fifth.

In addition, Bong was the celebrity who generated the most discussion on Twitter during the night of the 2020 Oscars. Around 520,000 tweets about Bong were posted that day. Hollywood celebrities Joaquin Phoenix, Eminem, Brad Pitt and Natalie Portman got the next-greatest numbers of tweets, in that order.

ROAD TO PARASITE: THE RISE OF KOREAN CINEMA IN 11 MUST-SEE MOVIES
A brief history of the Korean New Wave.

Source: Inverse.com

THE AWARD WAS GIVEN TO PARASITE, BUT ALL OF KOREA FELT ACCOMPLISHED.

The mountainous rise of Korean cinema reached its highest peak on Sunday when the American-centric Oscars crowned Korean director Bong Joon-ho and his acclaimed drama Parasite as the year's Best Picture (not best international, just best).

It was a historic moment, not just for foreign language cinema, but for the wide breadth of the Korean film industry that has seen pictures regularly transcend language and cultural barriers, from cult classics like Old Boy to sci-fi blockbusters like Snowpiercer. The list goes on, but we've whittled it down to an essential eleven.

For the unfamiliar, it may be hard to understand how this happened, and why Korean cinema is now the darling of the worldwide film community. While Japan boasts legends like Akira Kurosawa and Hayao Miyazaki, and Hong Kong has Wong Kar-Wai, Ann Hui, and John Woo, the most renowned artists of South Korea didn't emerge until the 2000s. Out of the 1997 financial collapse and a boost from screen quota laws, the East Asian nation of 51 million found their voices in directors like Park Chan-wook, Bong Joon-ho, Kwak Jae-yong, and more, who helped kick off the Korean New Wave that's now lasted nearly two decades.

The can't-miss films below illustrate a region's cinema that carved its identity through blending overly familiar genres into pointed social commentaries. Spy movies, monster movies, zombies, vampires, and rom-coms are remixed with uniquely Korean flavor that all point to a nation, and a people, who fell hard in the global economy only to resurge amidst grand, sweeping technological shifts. By the second decade, Korean filmmakers began to reckon with the unfair income inequality that continues to plague the nation.

Below is a brief history of the Korean New Wave, as illustrated by 11 must-watch movies that all led to the crowning of Parasite. If you're less "#BongHive" and more "Bong Joon-who?" let this be your starting point.

11. JOINT SECURITY AREA (2000)

It is commonly understood that the Korean New Wave kicked off in 1999 with South Korea's first Hollywood-style blockbuster, Shiri. A spy film directed by Kang Je-gyu, Shiri had the highest budget of a South Korean film at the time ($8.5 million) and still broke box office records upon its release. It was the reason James Cameron's Titanic sunk in South Korea, the only Asian nation the movie bombed.

But while Shiri was the first punch, Park Chan-wook's Joint Security Area (2000) was the haymaker. A mystery thriller that helped cement the careers of actors Lee Byung-hun, Song Kang-ho, and Lee Young-ae, the film explores the circumstances of a murder at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the border separating North and South Korea. In its microscopic view of the war-torn region, the film looks far and wide to the irreconcilable differences between two nations still at war today.

The fourth release from Park Chan-wook, Joint Security Area was a smash hit at home, becoming the highest-grossing movie in Korean film history in 2001. It developed an international cult following thanks in part to American directors like Quentin Tarantino giving it public praise.

Fun fact: When the film was released on DVD, South Korean President Roh Moo-Hyun gifted the movie to North Korea's Kim Jong-il at the 2007 Inter-Korean summit.

10. MY SASSY GIRL (2001)

Spoiler

Before Tom met Summer in (500) Days of Summer, director Kwak Jae-yong adapted a popular online blog written by a lovestruck boy obsessed over the perfect, if not quirky, girl.

My Sassy Girl, starring Jun Ji-hyun and Chae Tae-hyun, was a major hit that spawned one of the most popular Korean franchises of all time, earning acclaim across all of Asia. The inevitable American remake was produced in 2008 with Elisha Cuthbert, while other adaptations and remakes have popped up in Japan, India, China, and Nepali. In 2014, The Korean Wave author Jennifer Jung-Kim wrote of My Sassy Girl that it's a film that "deserves to be called a global success" based on its numerous localized adaptations.

9. VOLCANO HIGH (2001)

Spoiler

When misfit teenager Kim Kyung-soo (Jang Hyuk) is transferred to a secret martial arts school, he literally fights to survive in a mashup of teen dramas and kinetic action movies that all pay homage to Korea's homegrown manhwa (comics).

You won't find much praise for Volcano High outside the most niche action movie blogs. If it wasn't for an MTV-produced dub starring hip-hop musicians like André 3000, Lil Jon, Snoop Dogg, and Method Man, Kim Tae-kyun's martial arts teen comedy would be forgotten to time.

But it was precisely because of MTV and the movie's wide distribution in the US on DVD that Volcano High become a cult hit among American teens — and the first real dose of Korean action for a mass, impressionable audience. (I knew about the movie because it was always so cheap at Walmart.)

Peep the YouTube comments and you'll find people reminiscing about discovering it on MTV and DVD in their youths. While not the highest of brows, the availability of Volcano High may have been the untold Westerners' first dose of Korean cinema.

8. OLDBOY (2003)

Spoiler

Easily one of the most renowned movies of the Korean New Wave, this neo-noir thriller from Park Chan-wook adapts the Japanese comic of the same name. The film tells the story of a man mysteriously imprisoned for 15 years. When he's finally released, he's given only five days to figure out the reason for his torture.

Choi Min-Sik, Yoo Ji-tae, and Kang Hye-jung star in a gritty revenge tale whose reach and influence went far beyond its homeland. The film played a direct influence on American movies and shows like John Wick and Marvel's Daredevil.

Like Park's Joint Security Area, Old Boy's praise from Western voices like Quentin Tarantino and Roger Ebert — who in his review called the film "powerful ... not because of what it depicts, but because of the depths of the human heart which it strips bare" — helped cement the movie as a must-see and the real barn burner for the Korean New Wave around the world.

7. THE HOST (2006)

By the time Bong Joon-ho got to making his political monster thriller, The Host, he was already a veteran with film credits like Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000) and Memories of a Murder (2003). But it was The Host that put Bong on the global map. Merging together the styles of Japanese monster films with Korean social commentary, Bong tells the story of a Korean family that tries to stay together when a mutant monster emerges from the Han River.

Eschewing the spectacle of blowing things up in favor of family drama, The Host won acclaim and proved the Korean New Wave's tendency to mesh and reinvent genres like science fiction and horror into something more profound. The film is also proudly Korean, with scathing depictions of American imperialism. (The film was in part inspired by an international incident in 2000, when the United States military dumped formaldehyde into the drinking water of Seoul.)

6. THIRST (2009)

Amid the height of the West's obsession for vampires, thanks to the Twilight phenomenon, Park Chan-wook directed Thirst. A loose adaptation of the 1868 French novel Thérèse Raquin by Émile Zola, the movie stars Song Kang-ho as a Catholic priest who volunteers for a medical experiment that turns him into a vampire. The priest must then resist his bloodlust as he falls in love with an old childhood friend.

The film won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2009 and debuted at number one at the South Korean box office upon its release. While not the capital-B biggest movie in the Korean New Wave, the film's buzz — supported by Park who was still floating internationally thanks to the popularity of Oldboy — kept Korean film popularity going into the 2010s.

5. I SAW THE DEVIL (2010)

Spoiler

A movie seemingly made for the Reddit crowd, Kim Jee-woon's gruesomely morbid thriller, I Saw the Devil, took the Korean New Wave into its darkest territory yet. Flipping the manhunt movie on its head, the movie stars Lee Byung-hun (by now known to Americans for his role as Storm Shadow in 2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) as a heroic NIS agent who pursues a serial killer (Choi Min-sik) for the murder of his fiancé.

What the movie does differently than other hunt movies, to unnerving effect, is a downward spiral journey revealing what, or who, is a real monster. Praised by Rolling Stone for "relentless nastiness" that's "hard to watch and even harder to turn off" and by Taste of Cinema as "a modern masterpiece of South Korean cinema," the film endures thanks to discussions on places like Reddit.

4. SNOWPIERCER (2013)

Bong Joon-ho went international with Snowpiercer, a Korean-Czech financed movie with a majority English-speaking script and cast all based on a French comic book. Fresh from The Avengers, Chris Evans fights for freedom as the leader of a revolution aboard a high-speed train that circles a frosted Earth — an apocalypse from an overcorrection of reversing climate change. Song Kang-ho, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, John Hurt, Go Ah-sung, Alison Pill, and Ed Harris also star.

A critical favorite when it was released in 2013, the film not only proved the international appeal of Korean cinema, but it also became a bonafide franchise. An American TV series will premiere on TNT in 2020.

3. TRAIN TO BUSAN (2016)

Spoiler

Like The Host before it, Yeon Sang-ho's Train to Busan takes another horror genre (this time zombies) and again explores the meaningful bond of a family and class warfare when a zombie outbreak occurs on a train to the second-most populous city in South Korea.

Amidst the decorations for the film, the biggest praise came from English director Edgar Wright, of the 2004 comedy Shaun of the Dead, who tweeted Train to Busan was the "best zombie movie I've seen in forever. A total crowd-pleaser. Highly recommend."

2. THE HANDMAIDEN (2016)

Spoiler

Another erotic thriller from Chan-wook Park, this adaptation of Fingersmith by Sarah Waters changes Victorian England to Korea, dominated by colonial Japan, and is notable for borderline "pornographic" sex scenes between two main female characters. The film made numerous critics' end-of-year top 10 lists and included a nomination for the Palme d'Or. Just halfway past the 2010s, movies like The Handmaiden proved Korean cinema was here to stay.

1. BURNING (2018)

Spoiler

Lee Chang-dong's Burning adapts Haruki Murakami's short story "Barn Burning" into a mystery drama that, according to The Atlantic, "rejects the glamorization of Asian wealth and the notion of a universal Asian identity."

With two opposing characters — one working-class native Korean and one "Americanized" wealthy Korean played by The Walking Dead's Steven Yeun — the film imbues suspense into another harrowing tale of class warfare.

Moon meets Bong Joon-ho, vows govt. efforts against cinema screen monopolies

By Yonhap via The Korea Herald

(Yonhap)
(Yonhap)

President Moon Jae-in said Thursday his government would do its best to introduce a legal measure to curb screen monopolies in South Korean cinemas, speaking at a Cheong Wa Dae meeting with Bong Joon-ho, director of the Oscars-winning movie "Parasite."

The president pledged "tangible support" for the further development of the local film industry and cited the proposed ceiling on the total number of screens for a certain movie and the expansion of academies.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism earlier announced a plan for legislation on the so-called screen ceiling system, but it remains uncertain whether a related bill will pass the National Assembly amid lingering controversy over such an "artificial" regulatory step.

During the luncheon, also attended by the film's cast and production staff, Moon repeatedly said he was so proud that the dark comedy and thriller about social problems stemming from income gaps has bagged four Oscar awards.

He pointed out that it has rewritten the history of South Korea's film sector, born a century ago, and that of the Academy Awards as well.

"Parasite" was excellent enough to collapse the barrier as a non-English movie, so even the Oscars had no other choice but to recognize it, according to the president.

Its Oscar success has also given South Korean people a lot of pride and encouragement as they are suffering difficulties due to COVID-19, he added.

It has proven to the world that South Korea's culture is not marginal on the global stage any more as also shown in the global popularity of BTS and other K-pop celebrities, Moon noted.

In response, Bong quipped he was thrown into a "pot of shock" listening to the president's "lengthy remarks" right next to him.

On the menu, meanwhile, was the "Jjapaguri (Ram-dong)" dish, which was made well known globally due to Bong's movie. (Yonhap)

Parasite’ Star Song Kang-ho To Lead Stellar Cast of ‘Emergency Declaration’ (EXCLUSIVE)

By PATRICK FRATER Variety.com

“Parasite” star Song Kang-ho will head the cast of airborne disaster action move “Emergency Declaration.” Jeon Do-yeon and Lee Byung-hun co-star, making “Declaration” one of the powerful casts ever assembled in a Korean movie.

The film is in pre-production and aiming for an end-of-year release. Leading studio Showbox will begin pre-sales during this week’s European Film Market.

Showbox pitches it as ”an airborne blockbuster about an aircraft forced to declare an emergency when an unprecedented terror incident occurs in-flight.” It is to be directed by Han Jae-rim, who previously enjoyed success with “The King” and the Song-starring 2013 drama “The Face Reader.”

Jeon won a best actor award at Cannes in 2007 for “Secret Sunshine,” and has other credits that include “Untold Scandal” and “The Housemaid.” Lee is one of Korea’s finest thespians and a rarity who has managed to build a career on both sides of the Pacific. His Hollywood titles include “G.I. Joe” and “Reds” while his Korean roles include “Ashfall,” “I Saw the Devil,” “A Bittersweet Life” and “JSA: Joint Security Area.”

Song has been the face of Korean cinema for two decades, with a career that tracks many of its landmark moments. His standout roles include “Shiri” (1999) directed by Kang Je-gyu; Kim Jee-woon’s wrestling comedy “The Foul King” (2000); Park Chan-wook’s “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance” (2002); and Bong Joon-ho’s “Memories of Murder” (2003) and “Snowpiercer” in 2013. He was last year the first Asian actor to be honored by the Locarno film festival with its Excellence Award.

At Berlin, Showbox is also representing upcoming titles “Sinkhole,” a disaster drama about a house that is swallowed up, now in post; fantasy drama “Our Season”; and comedy action film “The Golden Holiday,” about a family holiday in the Philippines that turns into a murder investigation. It is also selling the drama “The Man Standing Next,” which stars Lee Byung in a tale of espionage and political maneuvering that last month grossed $34 million.

Song Kang-ho Tops Actor Branding Report

By William Schwartz on HanCinema.net

photo1161928.jpg

The Brand Reputation Report has just released its latest big data analysis of which actors have the strongest brands. For the period from February 6th to March 7th, fifty actors had their various media mentions analyzed and "Parasite" lead actor Song Kang-ho came out on top as having the strongest image.

The list was dominated by "Parasite" actors in general, as Song Kang-ho was followed by his co-stars Cho Yeo-jeong and Lee Jung-eun. Of the three, Song Kang-ho had the most established reputation in South Korean entertainment prior to the release of "Parasite", although Cho Yeo-jeong and Lee Jung-eun both received much praise and professional advancement thanks to their performances. The sudden interest in the movie was most likely due to its unexpectedly strong showing at the Academy Awards.

Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin held the fourth and fifth spots in the analysis, most likely due to the overwhelming popularity of the recently completed drama "Crash Landing on You". Choi Wooshik and Lee Sun-kyun, who also appeared in "Parasite" in significant roles, were in sixth and seventh place. Gong Yoo was in eighth place, even though his last project was "KIM Jiyoung: Born 1982" last year.

According to officials on the 30th, the production of 'Emergency Declaration' was originally scheduled to start in March, but the filming was delayed in the aftermath of the new coronavirus infection (Covid-19).  "We have put the time a little back to make sure we are ready."

Due to the worldwide virus outbreak, various filming schedules at home and abroad have been suspended. As stagnant domestic multiplexes ceased ticket sales, there was also an emergency situation in supplying new works that would otherwise attract the attention of the audience.

The aviation apocalypse film set on an airplane tells the story of characters in a predicament over where and how to land the aircraft as a virus breaks out on the ground below.

The film garnered a great deal of attention when it was announced that Song would be playing a lead role, especially after his success with director Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite” that reaped trophies from the Cannes Film Festival, the Golden Globes, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards and the Academy Awards.

On top of that, the film is set to be Song’s and Lee’s fourth film together. The two have appeared together in “Joint Security Area” (2000), “The Good. The Bad, The Weird” (2008) and “The Age of Shadows” (2016), all of which were box-office hits.

SEOUL, May 27 (Yonhap) -- A conversation among Song Kang-ho, the star of Oscar-winning South Korean film "Parasite," and the film's writer-director, Bong Joon-ho, will be streamed during an upcoming online global film festival organized by YouTube, according to the organizer's website Wednesday.

We Are One: A Global Film Festival, a 10-day free online film festival on YouTube, will stream on June 8 (U.S. time) an 82-minute recording of a conversation between Song and Bong at the 2019 Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland on "Parasite," according to the festival's website.

The online event, co-organized by global media company Tribeca Enterprises, was conceived from the idea that the international film community can come together and celebrate the art of cinema even in a time of the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing. The festival kicks off Friday.

Last year, Song was awarded the Excellence Award at the 2019 Locarno for "Parasite," becoming the first Asian actor to earn the Swiss film fest's special award that goes to actors or actresses whose work and have contributed to enriching the cinema industry.

Making his cinema debut with "The Day a Pig Fell into the Well" in 1996, the 52-year-old Song rose to international stardom with a series of critically acclaimed works and box-office hits, including "Joint Security Area" (2000), "Memories of Murder" (2003), "The Host" (2006) and "Snowpiercer" (2013).

"Parasite," a satirical thriller on the theme of wealth inequality, won four Oscars, including best picture, at this year's Academy Awards. It has collected over 50 awards from global film festivals.

Bong Joon-ho and Song Kang-ho will join “We are One,” an online film festival organized by YouTube and 20 international film festivals including the Cannes and Venice film festivals. IndieWire, a U.S. film industry and review website, confirmed Tuesday that “We are One” will feature the South Korean movie director and the actor along with famous directors such as Francis Ford Coppola and Steven Soderbergh.

The online film festival comes as many global film festivals are being suspended or cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Organized by YouTube and a host of film festivals, it will stream movies for film buffs and raise funds for coronavirus relief. The overall planning was done by Tribeca Enterprises, which runs the Tribeca Film Festival.

The festival will be held for 10 days starting from Friday streaming 31 films and 72 short films from 35 countries as well as 15 panel discussions.
