The 14th Festival du Film Coreen a Paris (FFCP) - translated to Paris Korean Film Festival - is now running until Nov. 5 at Publicis Cinemas in celebration of the centennial of the birth of Korean cinema.

The film event opened with director Lee Sang-geun’s “Exit” (2019) on Tuesday local time and will wrap up with director Yoon Ga-eun’s “The House of Us” (2019).

A total of 58 classic, commercial and independent films will be screened during the festival. Internationally-acclaimed film “House of Hummingbird,” (2019) the winner of 28 prestigious global film awards, the commercially successful “Extreme Job” (2019) and “A Higher Animal” (2000), the debut feature film from director Bong Joon-ho, will also be screened.

In the festival’s Focus section, director Kim Jee-woon’s “The Good, The Bad, The Weird” (2008) is scheduled to be showed, and director and actor Song Kang-ho is expected to attend special panels to share their experiences and answer questions from the audience.

“There is nothing especially new to the interest in Korean films for French moviegoers, but we felt that [their interest] grew exceptionally after ‘Parasite’ won the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Festival,” said Bae Yong-jae, the festival’s executive director. “People from French film distribution companies are increasingly visiting the event each year to take a look at the diverse array of film genres the festival offers.”

Cannes-winning 'Parasite' on a roll at U.S. box office

SEOUL, Nov. 5 (Yonhap) -- South Korean auteur Bong Joon-ho's family satire "Parasite" has maintained its strong theatrical presence at the U.S. box office, industry data showed Tuesday.

The Korean-language film, released stateside on Oct. 11, added US$2.6 million to its U.S. gross from Friday to Sunday, according to data from Box Office Mojo.

Its total reached $7.5 million, far outnumbering Bong's previous English-language science fiction movie "Snowpiercer" (2013), which garnered $4.6 million in 2013.

It is now being screened in 461 theaters in cities like New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco, up from 129 theaters a week earlier.

"Parasite" was first shown in a total of three theaters in New York and Los Angeles, earning an estimated $384,000 for the first weekend, with a per-screen average of $128,000.

It was the best per-screen haul since "La La Land" in 2016, and the biggest per-screen number for any international film opening in the U.S.

Separate data, released Monday by U.S. box office data provider The Numbers, showed that "Parasite" saw its worldwide box office top $109 million as of Monday. It exceeded "Snowpiercer" and "The Host" (2006), which earned $87.8 million and $92.6 million, respectively.

The film racked up the largest gross of $71.2 million in South Korea, followed by $11.9 million in France, the data showed.

Thanks to its bullish run at the U.S. box office, "Parasite" has emerged as one of the strongest contenders for the Oscar award for best international feature film.

Earlier, it was selected as South Korea's entry to the category at the upcoming Academy Awards slated for February. U.S. media also consider the film as a candidate for the best picture and best director awards.

The flick revolves around two families, one rich and one poor, who become entangled, leading to a series of unexpected violent mishaps. It won the top prize, the Palme d'Or, at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

16 Best Korean Movies of This Decade

by Diksha Sundriyal TheCinemaholic

In international cinema, there are a couple of countries that have made their presence felt strongly. While European cinema continues to excel, in the Asian market, Korean filmmakers have taken charge. Bong Joon-ho, Park Chan-wook and Kim Ki-duk are just a couple of directors that have made excellent films while succeeding in breaking into the international market. Their films are commercially successful without compromising with the soul of the story. In the past decade, this trend has been followed by a number of other directors. Here, we have compiled the list of the best Korean movies of this decade, from 2010 to 2019. that you must watch:

16. Train to Busan (2016)

15. The Man from Nowhere (2010)

14. The Day He Arrives (2011)

13. Masquerade (2012)

12. The Wailing (2016)

11. I Saw the Devil (2010)

10. The Handmaiden (2016)

9. House of Hummingbird (2018)

8. The Age of Shadows (2016)

South Korea’s official entry for Academy Awards in 2017, ‘The Age of Shadows’ follows a complex game between its characters, as they try to manipulate each other to serve their own purpose. The first spoke of the wheel is Lee Jung-chool. He is a Korean police officer and a turncoat who provides information to the Japanese to earn their favours. His lifestyle receives a blow when the Japanese government accuses him of working against them. This thoroughly confuses him but also brings him to the attention of some major players in Korea and Japan. While one tries to recruit him to his cause, there is another who plays a psychological game to establish his prominence. Who will win and how far will this game go?

7. Burning (2018)

6. Planet of Snail (2011)

5. Poetry (2010)

4. The Bacchus Lady (2016)

3. Hope (2013)

2. Silenced (2011)

1. Parasite (2019)

Kim Ki-taek and his family are destitute. They live in a shabby basement, surviving on meagre jobs. A change in their fortune comes when the son is sent to a rich family where a tutor is required. He succeeds in getting the job and finds that he can get his family employed too. One by one, he gets the old workers fired from their jobs and installs his sister, mother and father in their place. But, that’s not where the cycle ends. ‘Parasite’ is not just the best Korean movies of the decade, but also one of the best films of this century.

'Parasite' biggest commercial success among foreign films in North America this year

SEOUL, Nov. 11 (Yonhap) -- The Cannes-winning Korean film "Parasite" has garnered more than US$11 million in revenue in North America, becoming the most commercially successful foreign language title of this year so far, industry data showed Monday.

The film's revenue from the one-month period since its North American release on Oct. 11 till Sunday came to $11.28 million, according to the data by the U.S. box office and the American magazine Variety.

This marks the most revenue garnered by a foreign-language title in North America in 2019 and the most commercially successful Korean movie released there so far.

As the Korean movie gained popularity, the number of American theater screens allotted for the title increased to 603 over the weekend, from 461 a week earlier.

The solid performance in the region is bringing the film one step closer to its possibly winning the Oscar award for best international feature film.

The metaphor-heavy flick revolves around two economically polarized families, zeroing in on a violent encounter of the families through a dark comedy-thriller genre

It won the top prize, the Palme d'Or, at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

An interesting clip to watch featuring two Korean film critics and particularly Mr. Darcy Paquet who provided  English subs for Parasite.

Have known about Darcy Paquet since early 2000s.. he managed the first Koreanfilm forum before soompi etc took over. He's a self-confessed Jeon Do Yeon and Song Kang Ho fanboy.

By Yonhap via The Korea Herald

Director Bong Joon-ho and actor Song Kang-ho of Cannes-winning film "Parasite" were awarded national cultural medals for their contributions to the promotion of the Korean film industry, the South Korean government said Thursday.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said that it gave the Eungwan Order of Cultural Merit, the second highest class of the South Korean cultural decoration, to Bong and the fourth-highest Okgwan medal to Song during a ceremony held at the National Theater of Korea in central Seoul.

Bong's seventh feature, "Parasite," starring Song, won the Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival, becoming the first Korea-made film to clinch the highest prize at the world-renowned cinematic competition.

The black comedy-thriller, which depicts the entrenched social class divisions through two extreme families, has also emerged as a candidate for best international feature film of the Academy Awards.

"Director Bong has contributed to improving the status of Korean film on the international stage thanks to his critically acclaimed and commercially successful features, including 'Barking Dogs Never Bite,' 'Memories of Murder,' 'The Host,' 'Mother' and 'Snowpiercer,'" the ministry said in a release.

It also credited Song for his role in developing the Korean film industry on the back of a series of box office-hit movies, like "The Host," "Snowpiercer," "The Attorney" and "A Taxi Driver."

Kim Ki-duk, who won the Golden Lion award for "Pieta" at Venice film festival in 2012, received the Eungwan medal in the same year, while Park Chan-wook was given the third-grade Bogwan decoration in 2004 for winning the Cannes' No. 2 prize for "Oldboy." (Yonhap)

Korean film distributors beef up 2020 pipeline to dethrone Disney

Source: PULSE News

image_readtop_2019_1061177_15766497414018729.jpg

South Korean film distributors have bolstered their movie pipeline next year after losing their home turf to Walt Disney Company who swept box offices with Frozen 2.

Walt Disney Company Korea was the leading film distributor in the country with a market share of 26.9 percent through November, ahead of No. 2 CJ ENM by 3.6 percentage points, according to Korean Film Council on Tuesday.

This is the first time for a foreign distribution house to claim the top spot in Korea since the council started releasing market share data in 2008.

CJ ENM, which lost out to Disney despite distributing major hits like Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite” and action comedy film “Extreme Job,” will be joining hands with director Yoon Je-kyoon to make a film adaptation of the popular Korean musical “Hero.” Yoon was behind some of Korea’s highest-grossing movies, with the disaster film “Haeundae” garnering 11.3 million viewers and the drama film “Ode to My Father” pulling in 14.3 million.

The distributor would also back the upcoming film by Lee Yong-ju, known for his hit romance film “Architecture 101.” The new movie, tentatively titled “Seo Bok,” would be about the world’s first human clone and bring together heartthrob actors Park Bo-gum and Gong Yoo.

Local distributor Showbox has seven films lined up for 2020, filled with A-list actors. In January, it would release “The Man Standing Next,” a movie that deals with the Oct. 26, 1979 assassination of Korea’s third president Park Chung-hee. Directed by Woo Min-ho, the film would feature an ensemble cast including Lee Byung-hun, Lee Sung-min and Kwak Do-won.

Lee Byung-hun is to star in another Showbox movie titled “Emergency Declaration" with Song Kang-ho, who has recently been gaining worldwide recognition for his role in “Parasite.”

In 2015, Showbox stood at No. 2 with a market share of 17.1 percent. But its market presence has continued to fall, with its share shriveled to 5.7 percent in January-November this year.

Song Kang Ho And Bong Joon Ho Receive Recognition From Government After Success Of “Parasite”

“Parasite” director Bong Joon Ho and actor Song Kang Ho have been recognized for their work with Orders of Cultural Merit.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on December 19 that it has given the Eungwan Order of Cultural Merit (the second highest class of national cultural medals) to Bong Joon Ho and the Okgwan Order of Cultural Merit (the fourth highest class) to Song Kang Ho. The awards were presented to them at the National Theater in Seoul that day.

Bong Joon Ho has been lauded for his contributions to the advancement of the Korean film industry. The director has created many films that are both acclaimed by critics and hits at the box office, including “The Host,” “Mother,” “Snowpiercer,” “Okja,” and most recently “Parasite.” He is known for his use of dark humor, suspense, and surprising mood shifts, and he is often applauded for addressing social issues through his films.

The director stated, “I’m very grateful and it’s an honor to be receiving an Order of Cultural Merit for ‘Parasite,’ which I made with the same calm mindset as I’ve had throughout my 20 years of working as a director. I will continue to calmly walk the path of making new creative works step by step, working in the same way as I always have.”

Song Kang Ho is one of Korea’s most famous A-list actors, with a filmography that includes popular movies such as “Joint Security Area,” “Secret Sunshine,” “Thirst,” “The Attorney,” “A Taxi Driver,” and many more. He’s worked together with Bong Joon Ho on films including “Memories of Murder,” “The Host,” “Snowpiercer,” and “Parasite.” He is the first Korean actor whose films have brought in a total of over 100 million theatergoers.

The actor said, “I feel that this Order of Cultural Merit is more than I deserve. As I’m receiving this as a representative of all the great producers and actors, I will treasure it more and be more grateful for it.”

“Parasite” received the top prize of the Palme D’or at the Cannes Festival this year, while it’s also been a box office hit, surpassing 10 million viewers in Korea and achieving success overseas as well. It has been included on the shortlist for International Feature Film for next year’s Academy Awards.
