Feb 13, 2020

2020 has seen Korean cinema scale new heights on its 101st anniversary.

Bong Joon-ho's "Parasite" triumphed at the 92nd Academy Awards by winning the Oscars for Best Original Screenplay, Best International Feature, Best Director and Best Picture.

Not only was this a momentous occasion for Korean cinema, it was a huge milestone for world cinema as well.

Bong's Oscar victory has fueled interest in his other films, so the following is a list of his box office hits over the years.

"Memories of Murder" (2003): 1st collaboration with actor Song Kang-ho

"Memories of Murder" was Bong’s first box office hit in selling 5.25 million tickets nationwide and making him one of Korea's best new directors. Based on the real-life serial murders that occurred in Korea during the late 1980s and early 90s, the movie revolves around two detectives trying to solve the crimes. This was the first time for Bong to work with actor Song Kang-ho, and both have gone on to collaborate in four more films including the Oscar-winning "Parasite."

"The Host" (2006): 1st flick to sell over 10 million tickets

"The Host" is about a monster that lives in Seoul's Hangang River and kidnaps a young girl, prompting her family to try to rescue her. The film sold 10 million tickets in Korea, a first for Bong, and was his first film screened at the Cannes Film Festival.

"Snowpiercer" (2013): entering Hollywood

The post-apocalyptic thriller "Snowpiercer" is set on a train operating on a globe-spanning track amid a new ice age; the passengers are segregated by class. The lower-class passengers revolt against the elite, who live toward the front of the train. A-list actors like Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton starred in the film, allowing Bong to extend his influence to Hollywood.

"Okja" made headlines as a production funded by Netflix, the world's biggest streaming service. The plot centers around Mija, a young Korean girl who raises a genetically modified super pig, and the rescue mission that unfolds when the animal is taken from her. The film had its world premiere at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.

[PICK] ‘Oldboy’ Almost Didn’t Win an Award in Cannes?

By krishkim | Edited by Hwang Hong Sun | Translated by Kim Hoyeun

Cannes Film Festival, one of the world’s top film festivals, has been a new chapter in Korean film history. Everything that happens in the Cannes Festival, from the possibility of getting invited, the reactions at the scene to actually winning the awards, affects the box office success back at home. Since when did the Cannes Film Festival pay attention to Korean films? We look back on the historical moments, focusing on the great achievements of Korean films in the Cannes Film Festival.

In 2000, ‘ChunHyang’ Became the First Korean Film to Get Officially Invited to the Cannes Film Festival

The start of such keen attention was ChunHyang. Korean films have been screened during the festival before, but ChunHyang is the first film to be invited for competition. Directed by Im Kwon Taek, the film reinterpreted the Korean traditional pansori novel Chun Hyang. It was also the debut film of actor Jo Seung Woo. Unfortunately, it failed to win an award, but the fact that Korean film was invited to the Cannes Film Festival was covered in the news, making headlines. Two years later, director Im Kwon Taek won the Best Director Award with Strokes of Fire for the first time in Korean film history.

In 2004, ‘Oldboy’ Wins the Grand Prix

Even the process of being invited to the competition was quite dramatic for Oldboy. Except for some rare exceptional cases, the competition section fo the Cannes Film Festival only invites the World Premiere films. However, Oldboy was already released in Korea. Although it did not meet the requirements to enter the competition, with strong recommendations of officials from the festival who had already watched the film, Oldboy was officially invited to the competition section, not the non-competition section. The reactions to Oldboy, which landed in the Cannes Film Festival after a hard time, was explosive. Rumors that Quentin Tarantino, the jury president of that year, was impressed by the movie surfaced, raising the expectations for the possibility of winning an award. Eventually, Oldboywon the Grand Prix, the second-most prestigious prize of the festival.

In 2006, ‘The Host’ Begins the Bong Joon Ho Craze

Where was the first place that director Bong Joon Ho showcased his “uppercut” ceremony? The answer is right after the screening for The Host, which was invited to the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, has ended. While director Bong Joon Ho was walking up to the stage as he was showered with a standing ovation, he showcased his “uppercut” ceremony as if he was responding to the cheers. When the movie was officially released, the marketing team used his ceremony as part of the promotions. Eventually, the movie became the box office hit, attracting 10 million viewers. After The Host, the Cannes Film Festival has become an indispensable venue for promoting tentpole films that aim for the release in summer. A Hard Day (2014), Train to Busan (2016), and The Spy Gone North(2018), all received positive responses at the Cannes Film Festival and succeeded in domestic box office success.

In 2007, Jeon Do Yeon Became the First Actor to Win an Acting Award at the Cannes Film Festival with ‘Secret Sunshine’

Another good news flew in from the Cannes Film Festival in 2007. The news was that Jeon Do Yeon of Secret Sunshine won the Cannes Best Actress Award. It was the first time in 20 years that a Korean actor won the best actress award at the world’s top three film festivals since Kang Soo Yeon won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress award in 1987 with The Surrogate Womb. Jeon Do Yeon was praised for her splendid portrayal of extreme emotions of anger and loss as she played the mother who lost her son to a kidnapper in Secret Sunshine. It is all the more meaningful in that she was awarded the best actress award, even with the high language and cultural barriers.

In 2013, ‘Safe’ Wins the Short Film Palme d’Or

Safe won the Short Film Palme d’Or at the 66th Cannes Film Festival. It is a 13-minute short film directed by Moon Byung Gon and tells the story of Min Ji, a cashier who exchanges gift certificates at an illegal gambling house, meeting a guest with intent to kill.

In 2019, ‘Parasite’ Is Awarded the Palme d’Or

The fact that Parasite will shock the Cannes Film Festival was detected early on from the official screening. Even when the film was screened, cheers and applause were heard from time to time, and eight minutes of standing ovations were poured out as soon as the film was over. After the screening, the film received high praise and was considered a strong candidate for the Palme d’Or. On a side note, director Alejandro González Iñárritu went up to director Bong Joon Ho during the congratulatory reception and said he felt sorry that he couldn’t give the Cannes Best Actor Award trophy to Song Kang Ho, who was a candidate, because Parasite was awarded the Palme d’Or.

Song Kang Ho Will Work on Another Movie of Director Shin Yeon Shik Before Starting with ‘Cobweb’

Song Kang Ho chose movie First Place (literal translation), another new film directed by Shin Yeon Shik, as his next film.

Recently, multiple sources said that Song Kang Ho, who recently chose director Shin Yeon Shik’s Cobweb (literal translation) as his next film, bypassed his choice and will work on another new film by director Shin Yeon Shik.

After sharing the glory with the movie Parasite, Song Kang Ho is currently working on the first Korean air disaster film Emergency Declaration (literal translation).

In June, Song Kang Ho confirmed his appearance in director Shin Yeon Shik’s Cobweb, which is known to launch an experimental production world that destroys the usual form and genre, drawing explosive attention.

However, due to the dense and profound script of Cobweb and the burden of large-scale filming set that has to be created in order to digest 100% indoor studio shooting, the production was disrupted as investment and distribution company weren’t decided. In the end, Song Kang Ho and Shin Yeon Shik took a detour to produce First Place, which tells the story of a women’s volleyball team and the director who leads them, first.

Director Shin Yeon Shik said, “Cobweb will be on hold for a while. I am talking with Song Kang Ho regarding our new works, and First Place is one of them. We are also discussing several other works. When Song Kang Ho finishes working on his current movie, we will start filming in the coming winter. Please look forward to it.”

SONG Kang-ho Trains for Sports Drama ONE WIN

by Pierce Conran | Aug 31, 2020

Star Books Second Consecutive Lead Role with Director SHIN Yeon-shick

PARASITE (2019) star SONG Kang-ho is quickly filling up his schedule. Though currently in production on the disaster film Emergency Declaration (translated title), the actor has confirmed that he will appear in the sports drama One Win (translated title) from director SHIN Yeon-shick. The film will go before cameras ahead of Cobweb (translated title), another collaboration between the actor and director which was announced earlier this year.

SONG is slated to appear in SHIN’s film as Kim Woo-jin, the coach of a women’s volleyball team that has never tasted victory. He helps them on their road to achieve the titular ‘one win’.

Currently on set with LEE Byung-hun and JEON Do-yeon for Emergency Declaration, from HAN Jae-rim, who previously directed him in The Show Must Go On (2007) and The Face Reader (2013), SONG, already a huge star in Korea for two decades, saw his fame surge internationally as one of the leads in BONG Joon-ho’s PARASITE (2019), which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival last year before making history at the Academy Awards as the first ever foreign language winner of the Best Picture Award. SONG was also part of the cast that triumphed in the Best Ensemble category at the Screen Actors Guild Awards this year.

Director SHIN, who debuted as a filmmaker by helming AHN Sung-ki in the 2010 indie drama The Fair Love, came to the broader attention of the local industry as the screenwriter and producer of LEE Joon-ik’s hit black-and-white Colonial Era drama DONGJU; The Portrait of A Poet (2016). SHIN has also made the acclaimed indie films The Russian Novel (2013) and the Jeonju Cinema Project The Avian Kind (2015), among others.

One Win is scheduled to begin production this coming November.

NOTE: this article’s about movies released in the summer only, therefore, director Bong Joon-ho’s ‘The Host’ (July 27, 2006) was mentioned as the 1st movie to attract 10 million moviegoers.  Overall, the 1st movie to sell more than 10 million tickets in South Korea was director Kang Woo-suk’s ‘Silmido’ (led by Seol Kyung-gu; released on December 24, 2003), followed by director Kang Je-gyu’s ‘Taegukgi’ (Jang Dong-gun, Won Bin; Feb 6, 2004), director Lee Joon-ik’s ‘The King and the Clown’ (Gam Woo-sung, Jung Jin-young, Lee Joon-gi; Dec 29, 2005).

The first movie to draw 10 million moviegoers came out. It’s The Host, in which director Bong Joon Ho and actor Song Kang Ho joined hands again after Memories of Murder. As it received positive reviews at the Cannes Film Festival, it successfully attracted audiences as expected and topped the box office in the summer and became the number one box office hit in 2016.

The summer of 2007 was hot with controversy. Director Shim Hyung Rae’s D-War sparked controversy over patriotism marketing and its disappointing level of completion. Despite negative issues, the movie topped the summer box office and the 2008 box office.

Haeundae | Credit: CJ Entertainment

Haeundae (director: Yoon Je-kyun; cast: Seol Kyung-gu, Ha Ji-won, Park Joong-hoon, Uhm Jung-hwa) and Take Off (director: Kim Yong-hwa; cast: Ha Jung-woo, Kim Dong-wook, Kim Ji-seok), which caused concerns at first, turned the game around and became box office hits. Even before its release, Haeundae has been rumored to be pretty bad, but it became the second movie to attract 10 million moviegoers during the summer season since The Host. Take Off, which started a bit rocky, eventually drew 8.48 moviegoers, drawing attention.

War of the Arrows | Credit: Lotte Entertainment

In the summer of 2011, the box office failure of Sector 7 (director: Kim Ji-hoon; cast: Ha Ji-won) and the surprising success of War of the Arrows (director: Kim Han-min; cast: Park Hae-il) stood out. Though it was expected to receive great results, Sector 7 became a box-office flop with its mediocre results. Rather, relatively less-interested War of the Arrows received favorable reviews, becoming a box office hit that summer.

2012 – ‘The Thieves’ Beat Out Superheroes

The Thieves (director: Choi Dong-hoon; cast: Kim Yoon-seok, Kim Hye-soo, Lee Jung-jae, Jeon Ji-hyun), which boasts its luxurious cast, beat out The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises and became the number one box office hit that summer. In addition, Cha Tae Hyun’s comedy film The Grand Heist and Korean-style disaster film Deranged received solid results.

Hirokazu Koreeda, a world-renowned Japanese director, will direct a Korean movie. And Song Kang Ho, Kang Dong Won, and Bae Doo Na will star together in the master’s film.

According to the film industry, director Hirokazu Koreeda has been planning the film Broker (working title) with the Korean production team for about five years, and the project has finally taken its first step.

Broker is a movie about people who have come into relationships around the ‘Baby Box’ designed to allow people who cannot raise children to leave their babies anonymously.

Hirokazu Koreeda, who won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival with the film Shoplifters, has shown affection for Korean films for a long time.

In his new film, Song Kang Ho, Kang Dong Won, and Bae Doo Na will take the lead roles. The reunion of Song Kang Ho and Kang Dong Won, who showed dazzling performances in the movie Secret Reunion, and Bae Doo Na, who has already worked with Hirokazu Koreeda before in the movie Air Doll, are drawing keen attention. The meeting between three actors representing the Korean film industry and world-renowned director Hirokazu Koreeda already raised the expectations to the fullest.

Director Hirokazu Koreeda said, “This movie will be made in different country and different language just like my previous work. What can we deliver and share beyond language and culture? What is the definition of the director? I’d like to look deeper through this production.”

Broker will be produced by Zip Cinema, which introduced films like #ALIVE, Default, The Priests, and Cold Eyes, and the investment distribution is conducted by CJ ENM. Broker, the first Korean movie directed by Hirokazu Koreeda, who has captivated movie fans around the world with powerful storytelling, delicate directing, and sharp messages, is scheduled to start its filming in 2021.

Song Kang Ho, Kang Dong Won, And Bae Doona To Star In Film Led By Director Koreeda Hirokazu

Japanese director Koreeda Hirokazu, who won the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival with “Shoplifters,” will be taking on his first-ever Korean film!

On August 26, it was confirmed that Song Kang Ho, Kang Dong Won, and Bae Doona have been cast in leading roles in the upcoming film “Broker” (literal translation), which will be led by the director. The film is said to revolve around baby boxes, which are set up for people who are no longer able to provide for their babies to anonymously give them up.

Director Koreeda Hirokazu himself explained how the film came to light, and his statement reads as follows:

Plans for “Broker” began about five years ago.

As always, it all began with the actors. I first met Song Kang Ho at the Busan International Film Festival and Kang Dong Won when he was in Tokyo for work. I have continued to stay in contact with the two actors in Tokyo, Seoul, Busan, and Cannes. At first, we simply exchanged greetings but as we continued to share conversations, it naturally led to us talking about working on a film together.

I worked with Bae Doona in 2009, and I thought to myself, ‘I hope we work together again, next time as a human character,’ and that dream has finally come true over 10 years later. And now I will be working on a film with crew members and Korean actors I greatly respect.

“Broker” is a story about baby boxes. Right now, working on the script that will move these three great actors, I am so excited. In order to share this excitement with you all, I hope to create a thrilling, heartwarming, and emotional film.

This film, like my latest film, will be one where I am apart from my home country and native language. What will I be able to express and share as we overcome barriers of language and culture? What does it mean to be a director? I hope to explore those questions through this project.

Zip Cinema will be in charge of production, and CJ ENM will be investing in and distributing the film. The director is known for his powerful storytelling, detailed direction, and sharp messages about social issues, and they are currently in the process of working on the script, with filming set to begin in 2021.

It is the perfect dream team to lead the movie.

Park Jung Min and Lee Min Ji have joined Parasite actor Song Kang Ho in director Shin Yeon Shik’s new movie 1 Victory (literal title).

1 Victory is a movie about a volleyball coach, who has never tasted a single success in his life, taking on challenges after meeting the women’s volleyball team that only needs one win.

The meeting between Song Kang Ho and director Shin Yeon Shik drew keen attention, and Park Jung Min and Lee Min Ji have joined the team, raising the expectations to the fullest.

Originally, Song Kang Ho and director Shin Yeon Shik were supposed to work on film Cobweb, which is known to launch an experimental production world that destroys the usual form and genre, but chose to work on 1 Victory first as Cobweb faces several difficulties.

Song Kang Ho will play the role of volleyball coach Kim Woo Jin, who runs a volleyball class for children and takes over the women’s volleyball team just before disbandment.

Also, since Park Jung Min has marked a turning point in his acting career with Shin Yeon Shik’s DONGJU; The Portrait of A Poet, attention is focusing on what kind of performances they will show again.

1 Victory is scheduled to start filming in November.

MEMORIES OF MURDER to Make Long-Awaited North American Bow in October

by Pierce Conran | Sep 24, 2020

PARASITE Distributor to Introduce BONG Joon-ho Classic to US Audiences

16F8B3CE-29EC-40C0-9FD0-5DD27CE387CC.jpg

Following in the wake of the massive global success of PARASITE (2019), winner of the fourth Academy Award, including Best Picture, and the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, director BONG Joon-ho’s 2003 classic Memories of Murder is gearing up for release in North America in a remastered version.

NEON, which handled the North American release of PARASITE (2019), will also be presenting Memories of Murder (2003) to American audiences. NEON has partnered with Fathom Events and the film will get a special limited theatrical engagement open October 19 and 20.

The screening will include exclusive content and also feature a post-screening conversation between Director BONG and Baby Driver director Edgar Wright.

BONG’s second film, Memories of Murder (2003) is based on the real life case of a serial killer who stalked the countryside in Korea in 1980s. Long one of Korea’s most horrifying unsolved incidents, the story reached an unexpected conclusion last year when the killer was finally identified.

The film stars SONG Kang-ho and KIM Sang-kyung as detectives desperately trying to solve the case, while PARK Hae-il plays one of their main suspects. In addition to being an enormous critical success, the film was also a watershed commercial moment for Korean auteur cinema, becoming the second most successful film of 2003.

Memories of Murder (2003) will also be added to the Criterion Collection in the near future, joining PARASITE (2019) which will be published by the revered Blu-ray label next month.

Song Kang Ho will set up a new production company with director Kim Jee Woon and Warner Bros. Korea CEO Choi Jae Won.

According to a media outlet, Song Kang Ho is currently preparing a film and drama production company with director Kim Jee Woon and Warner Bros. Korea CEO Choi Jae Won. The name of the company is still yet to be decided.

As Warner Bros. decided to stop new investments in Korean films from next year, Warner Bros. Korea CEO Choi will also join the establishment of Song’s production company.

Song and director Kim first formed their relationship when they worked together in the 1998 film The Quiet Family. Since then, the two joined forces in a number of films, including The Foul King (2000), The Good, The Bad, The Weird (2008) and The Age of Shadows (2016).

Director Kim and CEO Choi formed a relationship through the 2003 film A Tale of Two Sisters, and Choi invested in three of Song’s films, Memories of Murder (2003), The President’s Barber (2004) and The Attorney (2013).

One insider told OSEN, “Song Kang Ho has been interested in making movies for a long time.”

In the meantime, JTBC is said to be moving to acquire the production company founded by the three at around 12 to 13 billion KRW (about 10.8 million to 11.7 million USD). But so far, nothing has been set in stone. Recently, JTBC studio had acquired two film production companies, BA Entertainment and Perfect Storm Film.

JTBC Becomes Base for New Company from KIM Jee-woon, SONG Kang-ho and CHOI Jae-won

Korean Film Titans Band Together Under New Banner Anthology Studios

Acclaimed filmmaker KIM Jee-woon, top star SONG Kang-ho and veteran producer CHOI Jae-won (aka Jay CHOI) have come together to form a new production company named Anthology Studios. Ahead of their official launch, the outfit was bought by JTBC Studios.

In addition to projects by Director KIM, who will henceforth make all of his films with the company, Anthology Studios will also foster new directorial talents, to be mentored by KIM. Though no projects have been officially confirmed, the company is expecting to produce both a KIM Jee-woon film and a TV series in the near future, while they are also considering projects with American companies.

JTBC Studios acquired Anthology Studios for KRW 20 million (USD 18 million), with the three principals each getting a share of that amount.

Director KIM is known for genre film classics such as A Tale of Two Sisters (2003), A Bittersweet Life (2005) and I Saw the Devil (2010), while SONG is world-famous for works such as PARASITE (2019). The pair have worked together four times in the past, on The Quiet Family (1998), The Foul King (2001), The Good, The Bad, The Weird (2008), and The Age of Shadows (2016).

CHOI first worked with KIM on A Tale of Two Sisters and was involved as producer or investor on several of SONG’s films, such as Memories of Murder (2003) and The Attorney (2013). All three collaborated on The Age of Shadows (2016) when CHOI was head of local production at Warner Bros Korea. The Age of Shadows (2016) producer and Producers’ Guild of Korea (PGK) president CHOI Jeong-hwa has also joined the outfit as head of the production.

Parasite actor Song Kang Ho and The Handmaiden actress Kim Min Hee have been named on the list of NYT’s “The 25 Greatest Actors of the 21st Century.”

On Nov 25, the New York Times released a list of “their favorite film performers of the past 20 years.” In this list, Song Kang Ho and Kim Min Hee were listed at No. 6 and No. 16. Director Bong Joon Ho wrote the introduction for Parasite actor Song Kang Ho, while American film critic Manohla Dargis wrote about The Handmaiden

actress Kim Min Hee.

In her writing, Manohla Dargis introduced Kim Min Hee as someone who “goes big and small, veers from monstrous to mousy, and alternately hides her character’s feelings and lets them run amok.”

Bong Joon Ho praised the actor, saying, “He has the ability to bring life and rawness to every moment. Even if a scene involves difficult dialogue or highly technical camerawork, he will find a way to make it seamless and spontaneous. Each take will be different, and the unwieldiest dialogue will seem like improvisation. It’s astounding and a pleasure to witness.”

The rest of the list includes A-list stars Denzel Washington, Isabelle Huppert, Keanu Reeves, Nicole Kidman, Toni Servillo, Zhao Tao, Viola Davis, Saoirse Ronan, Julianne Moore, and more.

The 25 Greatest Actors of the 21st Century (So Far)

Chameleons or beauties, star turns or character roles — these are the performers who have outshone all others on the big screen in the last 20 years.

By Manohla Dargis and A.O. Scott | Nov. 25, 2020

We are in a golden age of acting — make that platinum — as we realized when we decided to select our favorite film performers of the past 20 years. There’s no formula for choosing the best (just squabbling), and this list is both necessarily subjective and possibly scandalous in its omissions. Some of these performers are new to the scene; others have been around for decades. In making our choices, we have focused on this century and looked beyond Hollywood. And while there are certainly stars in the mix and even a smattering of Oscar winners, there are also character actors and chameleons, action heroes and art-house darlings. They’re 25 reasons we still love movies, maybe more than ever.

6. Song Kang Ho

By BONG JOON HO

The Korean actor Song Kang Ho probably first came to the attention of most American audiences in the 2020 best-picture Oscar winner, “Parasite,” playing an impoverished, conniving patriarch. That was his fourth collaboration with the director Bong Joon Ho, and we asked the filmmaker to explain why he has cast the star again and again.

I first saw Song Kang Ho in “Green Fish,” the director Lee Chang-dong’s feature debut. He played a rural, small-time gangster, and his performance was so stunningly realistic that a rumor circulated among directors that he was an actual thug. I later learned that he was an actor who had been active in the Daehak-ro theater scene for a long time.

Although I was a first assistant director at the time and not yet a director, I wanted to meet him. So, I invited him to the office for coffee in 1997. It was more of a casual conversation than an audition, but I could tell that he had the makings of a juggernaut.

When I was writing my second film, “Memories of Murder” (2005) I had Song firmly in mind to play the country detective who is stuck in his old ways and has blind faith in his instincts. Because he was born for the role and it was made for him.

[Whether in “Memories of a Murder,” “The Host” (2007), “Snowpiercer” (2014) or “Parasite”] it always feels like there will be a new layer to uncover. He’s like a canvas that grows and grows. No matter how many brush strokes I apply, there’s always more space to paint. I’m still eager to see what he will bring to a role. To me, he’s like an inexhaustible diamond mine. Whether I’ve done four movies with him or 40, I know I will unearth a new character.

He has the ability to bring life and rawness to every moment. Even if a scene involves difficult dialogue or highly technical camerawork, he will find a way to make it seamless and spontaneous. Each take will be different, and the unwieldiest dialogue will seem like improvisation. It’s astounding and a pleasure to witness.

He has the ability to bring life and rawness to every moment.

His uniqueness as a protagonist comes from his ordinariness and mundaneness. Especially to the Korean audience, Song projects the quality of the typical Korean working man, a neighbor or friend you might encounter in your neighborhood. So, they are even more engrossed when they see this seemingly everyday character confronted by a monster or a monstrous situation in movies like “The Host” or “Parasite.”

He starts from the ordinary and elevates it into a singular and inimitable voice. I believe that’s what makes Song Kang Ho and the characters he inhabits genuinely special.

Will They Be Released? List of 2021 Korean Films

by krishkim

With the coronavirus pandemic, many of the movies had to either halt their production or postpone their release.

And with the surge of COVID-19 cases in Korea, major distributors postponed their tent-pole films and are still yet to set a specific release schedule.

Directed by Haeundae and Ode to My Father director Yoon Je Kyung, Hero (literal title) depicts the last one year of An Jung Geun, a Korean-independence activist, who was sentenced to death after killing Ito Hirobumi in Harbin in October 1909. Impressed by the musical, director Yoon challenged live recording on the spot like Tom Hooper’s Les Miserable.

Mogadishu, directed by Veteran director Ryu Seung Wan, talks about the escape of diplomatic officials from South and North Korea, who got isolated in the middle of Somalia civil war in the 1990s. Jo In Sung, Kim Yoon Seok and Heo Joon Ho starred in the film. These two films were supposed to be released this summer, but their release was pushed back indefinitely with the pandemic.

Director Lee Joon Ik’s new film The Book of Fish, starring Byun Yohan and Sol Kyung Gu, will be released in 2021. The fact that this is Sol Kyung Gu’s first-ever historical project made headlines.

Seobok, starring Gong Yoo and Park Bo Gum, and Life Is Beautiful, Yeom Jung Ah and Ryu Seung Ryong, were originally scheduled to be unveiled earlier this month but delayed their release to next year.

The Merciless director Byun Sung Hyun’s new film Kingmaker (literal title), starring Sol Kyung Gu and Lee Sun Kyun, is also set to be released next year.  Emergency Declaration that flaunts its star-studded cast finally finished filming in October after much delay due to COVID-19 and is currently preparing for the release in 2021.

New mega-scale films by the masters are also on their way. The Handmaiden director Park Chan Wook’s new film Determination to Part Ways (literal title) and Hirokazu Koreeda’s new Korean film Broker (working title), starring Song Kang Ho, Kang Dong Won, and Bae Doo Na, are either being produced right now or plan to start filming next year.

Minari, which is drawing keen attention ahead of the Oscars next year, will also be released in Korean in the first half of 2021.

After a disappointing 2020, a look at the year ahead for the film industry

January 3, 2021

Theaters in December sat almost empty with nearly all highly anticipated films scrambling to push back their release dates due to a spike in the number of daily coronavirus cases.  With the exception of small or independent films, only two films of note were released last month — “Josee” and “Wonder Woman 1984.”

Imminent releases include “New Year Blues,” “Seobok” and “Life is Beautiful” — all three of which were scheduled to hit screens last month.

Director Hong Ji-young’s “New Year Blues” stars an array of popular actors such as Kim Kang-woo, Yoo In-na, Yoo Yeon-seok, Lee Yeon-hee, Choi Soo-young and Yoo Teo. The movie is set a week before the new year, and the actors portray four sets of couples or potential love interests.

Director Lee Yong-joo’s “Seobok” was one of the most anticipated films of 2020, generating buzz for the collaboration between Gong Yoo and Park Bo-gum. The sci-fi film revolves around an ex-intelligence agent Gi-heon’s last mission to deliver humanity’s first human clone, Seobok, to safety.

“Life is Beautiful,” starring actors Yum Jung-ah and Ryu Seung-ryong, is a musical about a wife who, after finding out that her days are numbered, goes on a road trip with her husband to find her first love as her last birthday wish.

The three films are expected to unveil their premiere dates as soon as the current uptick in Covid-19 cases can be contained. But in the face of the unpredictable coronavirus, none of the film distributors can pinpoint a specific date, and that also goes for a plethora of other films which had hoped to premiere last year.

Director Yoon Je-kyun’s musical film “Hero,” director Ryu Seung-wan’s “Mogadishu,” and historical dramas “The Book of Fish” by director Lee Joon-ik and "Hansan" from director Kim Han-min are also waiting for a chance to hit big screens.

Based on the musical production of the same title, actor Jung Sung-hwa portrays independence activist Ahn Jung-geun (1879-1910) during his last year of life while in prison in "Hero." Jung starred as Ahn in the musical since 2009. Director Yoon was to have been immensely moved by the original musical and tried his hand at recording the songs live on the set, just as Tom Hooper’s “Les Miserables” (2012) did.

Action-crime film “Mogadishu” featuring actors Kim Yoon-seok, Zo In-sung and Heo Joon-ho, was another highly anticipated project which had already finished filming in Morocco early last year and was set for a summer release. The film is based on a real-life defection of two Korean embassies which took place in the mist of the Somali Civil War in the 1990s.

“The Book of Fish” is the second black-and-white film from director Lee after “Dongju: The Portrait of A Poet” (2016). “The Book of Fish” is the tale of a camaraderie that blossoms between Jeong Yak-jeon (1758-1816) who is a scholar from the Joseon Dynasty (1319-1910) and a peasant named Chang-dae who work together to write a book on marine biology titled “Jasaneobo.” The film features actors Seol Kyung-gu and Byun Yo-han as the scholar and the peasant.

“Hansan” is the second film in a trilogy based on general Yi Sun-sin (1545-1598), originally set for release this year. The first film “Roaring Currents” (2014) still ranks No. 1 in the history of local box office, having drawn over 17 million audience members. The film covers the period of the first battle after the outbreak of the Imjin War (Japanese invasion of Joseon from 1592-1598).

Another film set for release this year is political drama “Kingmaker.” Based on Uhm Chang-rok, a real-life kingmaker or person who brings leaders to power through the exercise of political influence, the film is anticipated to depict a gripping political battle as politician Kim Woon-beom (played by Seol Kyung-gu) strives to become president with the assistance of a kingmaker Seol Chang-dae (played by Lee Sun-kyun).

“Emergency Declaration,” a film which takes place on an airplane while the world below is plunged into an apocalypse, features stars Song Kang-ho, Lee Byung-hun, Jeon Do-yeon and Im Si-wan. It is director Han Jae-rim’s latest film and is also expected to hit the theaters this year.

The two maestros of Korea and Japan are each preparing for new projects as well. Director Park Chan-wook is filming “Decision to Break Up” (translated) with actors Park Hae-il and Tang Wei while director Hirokazu Koreeda is wrapping up a screenplay for his first try at a Korean film tentatively titled “Broker.” It is set to begin filming this year with mega-popular actors Song Kang-ho, Kang Dong-won and Bae Doo-na.

Korean-American director Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari” is set to arrive in local theaters in the first half of this year. The film is based on the director’s own childhood and is about a Korean family that emigrates to Arkansas in the 1980s in search of the American dream. The film is receiving international accolades across the globe similar to director Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite,” and film critics reckon it's in with a strong chance for an Oscar nomination. The film features Korean and Korean-American actors such as Steven Yeun, Han Ye-ri and Youn Yuh-jung.

Continuing with films that were scheduled to premiere last year, Netflix, a platform which streams in 190 countries, became the host for many that chose not to premiere on the big screen.

“What Happened to Mr. Cha?” premiered on Jan. 1 on Netflix. Starring actor Cha In-pyo, the actor uses his actual name and adapts his own filmographies in the film to tell the story of a '90’s icon still caught up on his former glory and his struggles to become popular again.

Sci-fi film “Space Sweepers” stars actors Song Joong-ki, Kim Tae-ri, Jin Seon-kyu and Yoo Hae-jin as space pirates who come across a humanoid robot Dorothy, which is also a weapon of massive destruction. Netflix has yet to announce a release date for the film.

In terms of Netflix original series, be on the lookout for director Yeon Sang-ho’s “Hellbound,” “Kingdom: Ashin of the North,” and “Round Six.”

“Hellbound” is adapted from the Naver webtoon “The Hell,” in which the director scripted the story, and “Kingdom: Ashin of the North” is reported to be a side-sequel from the “Kingdom” series featuring actor Jun Ji-hyun. “Round Six,” starring actors Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo and Heo Sung-tae among others, is director Hwang Dong-hyuk’s latest film about a survival game in which the ultimate winner is awarded prize money that could change their lives.

Filming on the volleyball drama One Win (translated title), featuring SONG Kang-ho, PARK Jung-min, and JANG Yoon-joo, wound to a close on February 25. The film is the first of two projects that SONG recently signed on to star in for director SHIN Yeon-shick.

SONG plays an unsuccessful volleyball coach who takes on the challenge of leading a woman’s volleyball team that is in search of just one crucial win on the court.

Known around the world for PARASITE (2019) and many other classic Korean films, SONG Kang-ho also recently wrapped the disaster drama Emergency Declaration alongside LEE Byung-hun and JEON Do-yeon. He will next appear in KOREEDA Hirokazu’s Broker (working title) with BAE Doo-na, GANG Dong-won, and IU (aka LEE Ji-eun).

PARK Jung-min, who rose  through works such as Bleak Night (2010) and Tinker Ticker (2013), recently starred in the summer hit DELIVER US FROM EVIL. This year, he will appear in YEON Sang-ho’s Netflix series Hellbound alongside YOO Ah-in.

Following her screen debut on RYOO Seung-wan’s VETERAN (2015), model JANG Yoon-joo returned to screens to very strong notices in last year’s Jeonju Cinema Project Three Sisters. One Win is her first leading role in a commercial film.

Director SHIN Yeon-shick is one of the top directors in the indie film realm, known for works such as The Russian Novel (2012), The Avian Kind (2014), and Romans 8:37 (2017). He also wrote the script for and produced LEE Joon-ik’s critically acclaimed period drama DONGJU; The Portrait of A Poet (2016).

Last year, SHIN and SONG were also confirmed to be collaborating on the upcoming film Cobweb (translated title), a work that will mix black and white and color elements and be shot exclusively on sound stages.

The film "Parasite" (2019) was honored with the Best Picture Award, while actor Song Kang-ho won the Grand Prize, at the 40th Korea Gold Awards Festival held in Seoul, Thursday.

The 40th edition of the festival was originally scheduled to take place in February of last year, but was postponed over a year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The annual event is organized by the Korean Society of Cinematographers, who determines the winners based on their technical and creative talent.

Actors Cho Jin-woong and Lee Ha-nee grabbed the trophies for Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively, for their roles in "Black Money" (2019). Chung Ji-young, who helmed the white-collar crime film, also took home the Best Director Award.

"Black Money" is based on a real story in which a Korean bank was sold to a U.S. private equity fund for a suspiciously low price and then sold later for a huge profit.

"As I'm looking at the award winners, I feel tremendous weight on my shoulders. Korean films support beautiful justice. I will stand in support of bringing attention to such matters," Cho said after receiving the award.

Lee thanked the crew in her acceptance speech. "I'd like to thank all the production staff who have worked hard to put this film out in the world. At times like this, I've been thinking a lot about what I can do as an actor. I'll try to turn adversity into opportunity (during the pandemic)," she said.

The Best Supporting Actor and Actress Awards went to Lee Kwang-soo, who played a swimming prodigy with the mental age of a 5-year-old, in "Inseparable Bros" (2019), and Kim Mi-kyung, who played Ji-young's mother ― a traditional mother figure who gave up on her rights to be educated for the sake of her brothers ― in "Kim Ji-young: Born in 1982."

"The Divine Fury" actor Woo Do-hwan and "The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil" actor Kim Sung-kyu won the Best New Actor Awards.

Kim So-hye, who played Yoon-hee's daughter, Sae-bom, in the queer film, "Moonlit Winter," Choi Mi-kyo from the comedy drama, "Murphy's Law and Sally's Law," and Yoon Hye-ri, who starred as a high school student named Ye-jin, who develops feelings for a cafe owner in the queer film, "Between the Seasons," won the Best New Actress Awards.

The Cinematographers' Choice Popularity Awards went to actors Kim Hong-pa from "Juror 8" and Lim Yoon-a from "Exit."

"This award is meaningful because it was decided by cinematographers. I will work harder to present diverse work in the future," Lim said. The singer-actor has wrapped up shooting "Miracle," and is currently filming "Confidential Assignment 2," alongside Hyun Bin and Yoo Hae-jin.

'Emergency Declaration,' 'In Front of Your Face' invited to Cannes' non-competition

SEOUL, June 3 (Yonhap) -- South Korean films "Emergency Declaration," directed by Han Jae-rim, and "In Front of Your Face" by Hong Sang-soo were invited to this year's Cannes Film Festival.

In the official selection for the 74th Cannes Film Festival announced on Thursday, "Emergency Declaration" was listed in the Out of Competition category along with five other films, including "The Velvet Underground" by Todd Haynes, "Stillwater" by Tom McCarthy and "De Son Vivant" by Emmanuelle Bercot.

Celebrated South Korean auteur Hong Sang-soo's "In Front of Your Face" was named in the Cannes Premieres section.

The announcement marked the first time in five years in which a Korean film failed to make an entry to Cannes' main competition, excluding last year when the festival was canceled.

Since Park Chan-wook's "The Handmaiden" in 2016, Bong Joon-ho's "Okja" (2017), Hong's "The Day After" (2017), Lee Chang-dong's "Burning" and Bong's "Parasite" (2019) were selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at Cannes. "Parasite" won the top prize at that year.

The Cannes festival, one of the most prestigious film fests in the world, will take place on July 6-17, with American filmmaker Spike Lee named jury president.

This year, 24 films including the opener "Annette" by Leos Carax, "Red Rocket" by Sean Baker, "The French Dispatch" by Wes Anderson and "Drive My Car" by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, will contend for Palme d'Or.

While its 2020 edition was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Cannes' organizers announced the list of its selections of 56 movies without prize winners. Two Korean movies -- Yeon Sang-ho's "Peninsula" and Im Sang-soo's "Heaven: To The Land of Happiness" -- were included.

Two Korean films were officially invited to this year’s Cannes Film Festival – Han Jae Rim’s Emergency Declaration and Hong Sang Soo’s In Front of Your Face.

In the official selection of the 74th Cannes Film Festival announced Thursday, Director Han’s new film Emergency Declaration was listed in the Out of Competition category. Emergency Declaration begins when an in-air flight gets caught up in an unprecedented natural disaster.

Thierry Fremaux, the director of the Cannes committee, shared, “I think Korean films are largely divided into writer-oriented films, historical works, and works that specify a specific genre. And Emergency Declaration is a work that specifies a specific genre. It’s a perfect genre film.”

Han expressed joy over the news, saying, “I hope my desire to provide hope and comfort through Emergency Declaration will be conveyed to everyone at a time when the entire world is experiencing difficulties due to the pandemic.”

Director Hong Sang Soo’s In Front of Your Face was also named in the Cannes Premieres section, a new section that joined this year’s lineup. It’s designed to give returning Cannes auteurs a safe place to screen new work outside of the competition in the prestigious Debussy theater.

Fremaux shared, “I think he is a minimalist who makes personal films, and he is a director who inspires other film directors.” In Front of Your Face is Hong’s 11th film that was invited to Cannes. This makes Hong the Korean film director with the most Cannes invitations.

The Cannes Film Festival, normally held in May, has been postponed to July this year due to the COVID-19. It will be held from July 6th to July 17th.

<Emergency Declaration> is a reality aviation disaster film that takes place in the face of an unprecedented disaster situation and takes place about an airplane that declares an unconditional landing.

On the 3rd, the Cannes Film Festival Secretariat held an official press conference and introduced the official invitations of the festival to be held this year. <Emergency Declaration> is invited to the non-competition section, the main official section of the film festival, and makes its debut in the world film industry. The non-competitive section is one of the representative sections of the Cannes Film Festival, which carefully selects and invites works with both artistic and commercial qualities.

Thierry Fremo, executive director of the Cannes Film Festival on this day, said, “I think Korean films are largely divided into writeristic films, historical films, and films with outstanding genre characteristics. It can be said that it is a perfect genre film,” said the reason for the invitation.

In addition to the fact that it is the first aviation disaster film in Korea to deliver an overwhelming sense of immersion, <Emergency Declaration>, which has been attracting attention for its meeting of prominent actors such as Song Kang-ho, Lee Byung-hun, Jeon Do-yeon, Kim Nam-gil, Im Si-wan, Kim So-jin, and Park Hae-jun, is once again a hit in the film industry with the news of the Cannes Film Festival invitation expectations were raised to a high level.

Above all, it is a pleasure to know that the representative actors of Korea, who have had a deep relationship with the Cannes Film Festival, were once again honored with the Cannes invitation through <Emergency Declaration>.

Song Kang-ho, who won the Palme d'Or at Cannes for Parasite (2019), and Jeon Do-yeon, the first Korean actor to win the Best Actress Award at Cannes for <Miryang / Secret Sunshine> (2007), as well as Lee Byung-hun, Kim Nam-gil, and Im Si-wan walked the red carpet. Attention is focused on what kind of new image they will show to the world audience through <Emergency Declaration>.

<Emergency Declaration> is a new work by director Han Jae-rim, who has won box office success with high-quality films such as <The Purpose of Love / Rules of Dating> (2005) and <Elegant World / The Show Must Go on> (2007), which attracted audiences by drawing great sympathy with realistic description; <Contemplation / Face Reader> (2013), which was loved by 9.13 million viewers, <The King> (2017), which attracted audiences with stylish directing and solid storyline.

Director Han Jae-rim said in the news of the invitation, "I hope that the feeling of giving hope and comfort through the movie <Emergency Declaration> will be conveyed to everyone at a time when the world is experiencing difficulties due to Corona."

On the other hand, 'emergency declaration' refers to an emergency in which, when an aircraft is faced with a disaster situation, normal operation is no longer possible according to the judgment of the captain and an unconditional landing is declared. It will be shown for the first time in the world at Cannes Film Festival, which opens on Sunday.

Song Kang Ho will become the first Korean actor to serve as a jury at the 74th Cannes Film Festival.

According to the film industry, Song recently accepted an offer to join the competition jury of the Cannes Film Festival, which will be held for 12 days from July 6th. With American filmmaker Spike Lee as the President of the Jury, the full list of the jurors will be announced next week.

Song is the fifth Korean to be a member of Cannes’ jury, following director Shin Sang Ok (1994), director Lee Chang Dong (2009), actress Jeon Do Yeon (2014), and director Park Chan Wook (2017).

Starting in 2007, Song has had a special relationship with Cannes. At the 72nd Cannes Film Festival, he was the only actor who stood by director Bong Joon Ho to share a moment of glory when Parasite won Palme d’Or. Before that, his two other movies were invited to the festival’s competition section: Secret Sunshine (2007) and Thirst (2009). Plus, The Good, The Bad, The Weird (2008) and his new film Emergency Declaration were invited to the non-competition category.

Meanwhile, Song is currently filming Hirokazu Koreeda’s new Korean film Broker (working title). He will be flying to Cannes in early July as soon as he wraps up the filming.
