Actors Song Kang-ho and Ye Ji-won received the Étoile du Cinéma award on Saturday for contributing to cinematic exchanges between Korea and France.

According to the French embassy on Monday, the two received the honor at the French Night event held at the Paradise Hotel Busan in Haeundae on Saturday. The embassy annually awards people in the movie industry who contributed to cultural exchanges between Korean and French cinema.

“I remember watching a film at the French Cultural Center in Anguk [central Seoul],” said Song after accepting the award. “It was my first step into films. I’m so moved and honored to receive this award 36 years after that.”

“Thank you so much for this great award,” said Ye in French. The actor is well-known as a Francophile in the Korean entertainment industry.

“A lot has happened between France and I. I think this is my destiny. I’m glad that I could receive this award with Song.”

Saturday was the first French Night event held in two years, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Film producers and actors from both countries attended the event.

“French director Jean Renoir, who is one of my three favorite directors in film history, wrote ‘I would rather be a citizen of the film media than a citizen of France’ in his autobiography,” said Huh Moon-young, director of the Busan International Film Festival currently ongoing in the city. “I want to share his words with every film industry worker here.”

“Korean and French films have respected and influenced each other for a long time,” said Julien Cats, the French Embassy’s Deputy Head of Mission. “Through this event, I want to appreciate the efforts of Koreans in the movie industry who are striving to promote the excellence and variety of Korean films.”

Song Kang Ho‘s first-ever TV series Uncle Samsik (literal title) has finalized its cast.

Uncle Samsik paints out the ambition and bromance of two men, Uncle Samsik and Kim San, who survived a turbulent period in the early 1960s, centering around their love, faith, and doubts.

Song Kang Ho steps into the role of Uncle Samsik, who takes pride in the fact that “he ate three meals every day even during the war.” He’s a man of colorful narrative. Joining him in the cast is Byun Yohan as Kim San, an elite who graduated from Korea Military Academy. While studying in the States, he changes his major to economics and returns to Korea with the grand dream of turning Korea into an industrial country. The two will show a perfect bromance in the show as Uncle Samsik approaches Kim San, saying that the two have the same dream.

Lee Kyoo Hyung plays Kang Sung Min, the most likely candidate to become the next (political) leader. He’s been fulfilling his desires through Samsik, but now he wants to get rid of him. The animosity Samsik feels toward Kang Sung Min is one of the reasons that he’s drawn to Kim San. Lastly, Seo Hyun Woo turns into Jung Han Min, an elite soldier. He studied in the States alongside Kim San, but he stayed in the army, dreaming of one day reforming the military. But like Kim San, he also faces the harsh reality.

Meanwhile, Uncle Samsik is penned and helmed by DONGJU; The Portrait of A Poet director Shin Yeon Shick.

SEOUL October 13 (Yonhap) -- “Grand Bell Award”, also known as “Daejong Film Award” which was unfortunately canceled in 2021, will kick off on December 9 at New Millennium Hall in Konkook University.

South Korean movie organization held “Media Day” in Chungmu Art Center on Wednesday, and addressed their plans and ways to improve “Grand Bell Award.”

Director Yang Yoon-ho (the leading figure of the organization) addressed “We have made significant modification to ‘Grand Bell Award’ since we are restarting this year.  We will do our best to make ‘Grand Bell Award’ which encompasses cultural richness to become a globally known award.“

Starting this year, the pre-screening method has been changed from submission based to selection based.

Eleven of the individuals from the field related to movie industry such as movie critics, reporters, programmers and more went through the screening process of 237 movies which premiered throughout the year, from there on 19 of the movies were carefully selected to be featured at the main event.

The organization opened a way for the public to participate in the selection of the award winners.

In total of 10 thousand national review boards will be recruited and they will participate in naming winners of six different awards given such as the “Best lead actress and actor awards”, “Best supporting actor and actress” and more. The final award winners will be selected based on both of the scores from the boards and the judges.

“Grand Bell Award” is one of South Korea’s long lasting traditional movie awards since it first kicked off in 1962. However, due to the transparency of the selection process, the name value of the award ceremony has plummeted.

Throughout the event held on October 12, self reflection of “Grand Bell Award” took place.

Director Lee Jang-ho is assigned as the lead figure of “Grand Bell Award Committee” addressed “I feel very ashamed and that I was not capable of putting a stop to the derailment of Grand Bell Award.  Individual interest in ‘Grand Bell Award’ at this moment in time will be greatly appreciated.”

Director Yang Yoon-ho stated “I feel like the indifference of ‘Grand Bell Award’ by those within the movie industry has led to the drop of name value of the award.  I would like to send dearest apology.”

Moreover, secretary general Lee Sang-wu stated “Everything about this award needs modification. “I am very bad about how the reputation of ‘Grand Bell Award’ has fallen, I would send my deepest apology.”

Lineup of movies competing at the main event were revealed.

“Decision to Leave,” “Hunt,” “Kingmaker,” “Hansan : Rising Dragon,” and “Broker” will be fighting for the title of Best Picture award.

As for the award for directors, Park Chan-wook from “Decision to Leave,” Kim Han-min from “Hansan: Rising Dragon,” Shin Su-won from “Hommage” and Hong Sang-soo from “In Front of Your Face” are nominated.

For the best actress award, Tang Wei from “Decision to Leave,” Yum Jung-ah from “Life is Beautiful,” Lee Hye-young from “In Front of Your Face,” Lee Jung-eun from “Hommage” and Park So-dam from “Special Cargo” are nominated.

Park Hae-il from “Decision to Leave,” Sol Kyung-gu from “Kingmaker,” Song Kang-ho from “Broker,” Jung Woo-sung from “Hunt,” Lee Byung-hun from “Emergency Declaration” and Ryu Seung-ryong from “Life is Beautiful” are nominated for the best actor award.

South Korean movie “Hunt” has been nominated in 12 different categories, taking the title of most nominated movie.

The slogan of “Grand Bell Award” is “People are watching, the world is watching.” This encompasses the committee’s firm stand and ambition to make “Grand Bell award” as one of the globally known film festivals.

For the honorary ambassador of “Grand Bell Award,” oldest South Korean actor Lee Soon-jae, recently debuted actress Choi Jung-woon, numerous media creators, and influencers have been appointed to advertise the upcoming “Grand Bell Award.” (END)

Song Kang-ho stars in “The Attorney” (Next Entertainment World)

The Korean Film Council will hold the Freedom of Expression Film Festival from Friday until Dec. 18, with local independent film theaters screening 20 films that were blacklisted during previous conservative administrations. The existence of the blacklist came to light in 2016.

The 20 films include director Park Chan-wook’s “Joint Security Area” (2000), “The Handmaiden” (2016), director Chung Ji-young’s “National Security” (2012) and movies starring Song Kang-ho, including “The Attorney” (2013), “A Taxi Driver” (2017). Documentary films “The Remnants” (2017) and “The Truth Shall Not Sink with Sewol” (2014) will also be screened at indie theaters.

The council said 20 indie theaters will each screen one film, with some holding a discussion session with the audience after the screenings.

A special committee established within the council to prevent blacklisting of cultural figures reiterated the “value of freedom of expression in art” by featuring films and creators who had been blacklisted.

During the 10-day festival, the special committee will also release pamphlets outlining the damages caused by the blacklist, a white paper on recovery efforts and how future blacklisting can be prevented.

On Dec. 15, the council will hold an online forum to discuss in-depth the meaning of freedom of expression for artists with professor Oh Dong-seok from the Ajou University Law School, who will deliver a keynote speech.

During the administrations of Park Geun-hye and Lee Myung-bak, nearly 10,000 figures in the culture and entertainment sectors were blacklisted for criticizing the government and faced unfair treatment such as subsidy cuts.

Some iconic movie stars will cross over to the small screen amid the changing landscape of the entertainment industry where content streaming services are now at the forefront of big-budget TV series.

Song Kang-ho, who won the Best Actor prize at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival for his performance in the film, "Broker," will star in a TV series titled, "Uncle Sam Shik" (working title), whose detailed cast and production schedule have not yet been revealed.

Set in the early 1960s, the 10-episode series follows two men ― Sam Shik and Kim San (Byun Yo-han) ― through their bromance and the obstacles they face during a turbulent time in the country's history.

It is Song's first TV project since his debut in 1990. Song is one of the most iconic movie stars in Korea, with a number of box office hits under his belt, including "Memories of Murder" (2003), "Snowpiercer" (2013), "A Taxi Driver" (2017) and "Parasite" (2019).

Jung Woo-sung, who made his directorial debut at the 47th Toronto Film Festival with his film "A Man of Reason," will also return to the drama scene after 12 years following "Padam Padam" in 2011. He will star opposite actress Shin Hyun-been in the upcoming healing romance drama, "Tell Me That You Love Me" (working title), to be directed by "Our Beloved Summer" (2022) director Kim Yoon-jin and written by "Love in the Moonlight" writer Kim Min-jung.

Actor Seol Kyung-gu, whose film, "Phantom," will hit theaters on Jan. 18, is likely to appear on the small screen for the first time in 29 years if negotiations are finalized over his appearance in the political drama, "Gust of Wind" (working title).

Prolific actor Kim Yoon-seok, who will hit the big screen this year with the period action blockbuster, "Noryang: The Sea of Death," is also in talks to join the drama series, "In the Woods Where There is No One" (working title). It will be directed by Mo Wan-il, who helmed "The World of the Married" (2020).

Streaming platforms are also ushering in A-list actresses signing up for a slew of TV series. Go Hyun-jung will appear in the upcoming Netflix series, "Mask Girl," as a broadcast jockey who is insecure about her looks.

Actress Lee Na-young will take on a leading role in Wavve's original series, "Park Ha-kyung's Travel Diary" (working title). In the upcoming series, she will star as a high school teacher who finds comfort during her weekend getaways.

Lee Young-ae will star in "Maestra" (working title) as female orchestra conductor. Adapted from the French drama, "Philharmonia," it follows a conductor who investigates mysterious happenings involving her orchestra.

Korean-Japanese collaborative film “Broker” garnered a 91 percent “fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes, with an audience popcorn score of 95 percent after its release in North America on Dec. 26.

“Broker” is a film depicting the unexpected journey a group of people take after finding an abandoned baby in a baby box. After the film was released in North American theaters, it recorded high ratings on the movie ratings site Rotten Tomatoes' Freshness Index and on its Popcorn Index.

The praise from overseas media comes after Song Kang-ho took home the Best Actor award for the film at the 75th Cannes International Film Festival in May last year.

BBC called it “a film that permeates naturally,” while The New York Times said “director Hirokazu Kore-eda honestly draws a happy ending.” Other outlets including the Hollywood Reporter, Slash Film, Los Angeles Times and Time Out all praised “Broker.”

“Broker” was released in France on Dec. 7 and in Spain on Dec. 21. It will be released in Portugal on Jan. 5, Denmark on Jan. 26, the U.K. on Feb. 24 and Germany on March 16.
