Guest paulinee Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 So the whole book is kinda different from the movie. Damn. I wanted to see the cast of the siblings... No wonder I had no idea who William was. I was like, "who..?" I had to go back to read it again. >.<" It was a really good book, and maybe the movie will turn out pretty good. Hm, in some ways HIlary Swank reminds me of Jennifer Gardner.
Guest ilikepho Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 I have the book at them moment...going to read it before I watch it

Guest monchichi Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 I heard that 'the letter' the old korean movie has the EXACT same plot as this book I bet the author plagiarised Who cares? Apparently Harry Potter was plagiarised too but it's still damn good and is still worth reading. Anyway, I watched the P.S. I Love You free screening today with my friends... and as promised, here is my review... P.S. I Love You - (crappy) Review It's been a loooooong day, so bear with me ^^; I'll darken the parts which I think will be spoilers. The Good OOook. The good points of the movie are: * Funny moments were tweaked. I think the book focused a lot more on the emotional side of Holly's loss and her heartbreak while the movie added a lot more light hearted and fun moments in it which were quite enjoyable - particularly Harry Conick Jr's performance (as the dopey bar guy). * The chemistry was good between Holly and Gerry ~ I can honestly believe that I was watching two people completely in love rather than two actors who are pretending to be in love. * They stayed true to some of the characters and the plots - Karaoke bar, her best friends. * There were a few tear jerking moments, especially near the end (though definitely not as much as the book - I can vouch that with confidence). * A light hearted and fun movie to watch with very few dark moments. Definitely a good movie for those who are into romantic/chick flick movies. * Gerard Butler is a sexy fox. The Bad The bad... well, mainly a comparison of the book and the movie together. The movie, on its own, is pretty good and I recommend it to anyone who hasn't read the book yet but if you have read the book, don't expect anything great. Moving on... * While the two mediums (book & movie) possess the same name (P.S. I Love You) - both are different in storyline and characters. Not completely different but just enough to completely disappoint those who have read the book and are expecting a decent adaptation. Like I said in The Good, both movie and book provide a different experience for the reader/viewer. One is funner than the other but, in my own opinion, not by much. * The book focused on all aspects of Holly's life after the death of her husband/bestfriend/soulmate like her family, her friends and herself. That's what I loved about the book. However, the movie concentrates mainly on Holly and Gerry's life together and the memories they shared ~ possibly to give Gerard Butler more screen time? o_O LOL In any case, I wanted to see more of Holly's family but in the movie, only her mother and her younger sister (who is only a minor character BTW and is completely different from the book) remain. * It was too sugar coated for me. The book presented real issues and real emotions I could actually relate to like the fight with her and her best friend whereas the movie didn't do much with that. It was... too fairytale-like to me so I couldn't really involve myself with the movie like I did with the book and therefore couldn't feel any empathy for Holly's character during the movie. * Gerard Butler's Irish accent was terrible LOL Well, not that terrible... or maybe I wasn't listening properly and I was staring at him too much hehehe. * The last line of the movie... was, IMO, lame: P.S. Guess What? =.=; The Conclusion If I were to view the movie as its own, I would say it was pretty decent but not quite as good as The Notebook which is my favourite romantic movie of all time and touched me very deeply. However, when I compare it to the book ~ well... yeah. The book basically kicks the movie's butt even with the help of Holly and Gerry's chemistry. It was as if... the screenwriter for the movie never even read the book properly or took a few of the ideas presented in the book, twisted it and made it into another movie while slapping on the same title. Some of the changes... I have no idea why they changed it... it seemed a bit unnecessary?? And they focused too much on the couple... even though they were extremely sweet together. I could rant all day about how the movie was almost completely different to the book (not the mention the fact that they left out my most favourite character in the book!! Grr... Richard) but as I said earlier, that doesn't mean you have to sit through the entire movie all grumpy - the movie itself is quite enjoyable but it's just not as good as the book. My personal rating (compared to other romantic movies I've seen): 6.5/10 ~ -1 Too 'sugary' or generic (in other words, just a normal romantic movie and nothing really special), -1 The pacing of the movie was slightly weird (to me) and didn't flow too well, -1 Left out my fav character (LOL a bit biased there...), -0.5 The ending. Anyway, that was my opinion of the movie. Don't let it put you off from watching it because, as I said atleast twice already, it really is a decent movie to watch and romantic movie buffs will definitely love it. All those who've read the books, discard your expectations and pretend you're just watching any other old movie and you'll probably enjoy it too. BTW, 'William' is kind of the movie replacement of 'Rob' in the book (the guy Holly meets at the end) but they changed his character to be Gerry's bestfriend in Ireland from long ago... unlike the book, he gets more screentime.
juhee Posted December 16, 2007 Author Posted December 16, 2007 ^wow thanks soooo much for the review!!! *sighs* i guess i should go into the theater with my expectation low... and with the book's storyline out of my head... eek i read the spoilers... and the so how the movie ends will def. make me go... wth~ so the ending doesn't end with Gerry's last letter?
Guest monchichi Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 ^wow thanks soooo much for the review!!! *sighs* i guess i should go into the theater with my expectation low... and with the book's storyline out of my head... eek i read the spoilers... and the so how the movie ends will def. make me go... wth~ so the ending doesn't end with Gerry's last letter? No problems! I tried to keep it as unbiased as possible! Hrmm... not exactly. But you have to watch the movie to find out what I'm talking about! XD I shouldn't say anymore in case it ruins the movie for everyone but I really, really want to! >.< But you should be pleased with the movie if you like Gerard Butler... he gets a LOT of screen time for a dead character (LOL) and the scenes of Holly and Gerry together are very sweet.
