  1. I'm not really sure how to feel after episode 2. There was a lot I liked but some of the writing was so awful that I worry what the writer will give us some sort of Heirs in combat zone.

    thoughts in no particular order:

    - Song Joong-ki, Song Hyo-kyo and Jin Goo are all wonderful to watch and not just because of their looks. These are quality actors. Whoever cast this show knew what they were doing.

    -  I really hope he was walking past her to go pick up the scarf.

    - I do wonder how Jin Goo managed to get out the god awful speech at the beginning about the fight being a test to see if they were worthy to be out in the field together. What utter tripe.

    - The conversation between our main couple about the clash between their jobs was quite good. And better yet was the acting. Especially SJK. You could see so many emotions. My guess is this will be the central stumbling block in their relationship getting back on track. I certainly hope so as it is a good premise with lots of room for exploration of ideas.

    - sorry but Onew is not doing it for me. Perhaps he will get better as the scenes get more serious.

    - I look forward to the hospital boss who sent her off on this trip to get his comeuppance. What a self-centered condescending prize winning idiot he is.

    -  Production quality is fabulous to watch. Nice editing. Well placed shots. The whole effect is slick.

    - Umm why is a soldier (even an elite one) wearing a $900USD sweatshirt? (the one with the signature 4 white bar stripes on the arm). This designer was used in Oh My Venus as well. (the scarves and I think Henry wore the same or near same sweatshirt too). This does not make sense to me.

  2. Thanks to the fabulously fast subbers at viki I watched this first before Come back, Ahjussi. I have been looking forward to DOTS for two reasons. SJK of course, but also complete pre-production. For the health of the actors and soundness of script I really hope this is the future of k-dramas. So I hope this works out for KBS. But I confess to being a bit leary of watching another Kim Eun-sook show. Her stuff lacks depth in most cases and this topic deserves depth.

    @ck1Oz - nice to read your posts again, I always enjoy your thoughtful detail oriented perspective. But no need to kick yourself. Aren't we all here for SJK? No way to tell if you will like it until you watch at least one episode. But I do have to agree with you about the helicopter scene, that was plain silly. The medical stuff did not bother me much as I long ago gave up on K-dramas being realistic about medicine. (hey lets do cpr on anyone who so much as faints) Actually I was pleased they mentioned not moving after the accident. So many dramas have people grabbing the fall victim and violently shaking them. Similarly I was pleased he commented on her having the phone number as this normally passes without comment.

    @Ahpheng- yippee c-strips!!! Thank you.

    my random thoughts:

    - I liked the quick romance. Sometimes it really does happen that way. I found that quite believable.
    - I liked that we got to see them as people at home and normal before they are in a very abnormal situation.
    - loved the two men together.
    - Liked the kid. I hope we see more of him.

    -Liked SJK's look. I have liked him since seeing the early RM episodes. Seems like a nice person who really cares about being a good actor. I have felt bad for him because I think his pretty boy looks probably limit some of his choices. But nicely he is looking like an adult man here and that is great.

    - I have decided to try and not expect too much accuracy from the field scenes but I do hope they don't stretch credibility too far. Seeing a news report and being immediately deployed with the expectation of being back in a week might be that breaking point for me. But I refuse to worry about it until at least finishing the second episode.

  3. @zenya22 - do we know that JE and SR get married? I know we saw divorce papers and post made by SR saying she can now be with "her man". I got the feeling that was a celebration of the divorce and a rude claim of ownership. But was there something I missed?

    I was replying to @jadecloud who said that her take was the beach scene at the beginning episode was that they were married. So I replied.. Both of us are just stating our speculations of that scene. Maybe you are right that the divorce was signed,and she was celebrating.. Maybe I was the one who missed something. I have to go back and see. I am saying though that Ms. Korea 75, will she just keep still?

    No I  think you are dead on the money about Miss Korea 75. She may be book stupid but she is one tough cookie. She has not just been blindly bopping along in life. She loves her son but wants his marriage to stay intact and i think she will most certainly work to make SR suffer. Oddly enough we may all be cheering her along even though it is hard to watch her at times.

  4. @nearsea, sometimes I think, I try to dig too deep into the writer's meaning. Some dramas the writer writes a drama on a really thought provoking subject, but you soon realize they haven't put much real thought into their topic. You then have other writers who you can tell put a lot of thought into their topic and it makes for meaningful discussions. In this drama, so far it seems the writer has put a lot of thought into their topic of a married couple whose marriage is falling apart after the death of their child. Of course this is just episode 6 so we'll see how this progresses. So at this point, I'm going to respond as if the writer is wanting us to think on this thought provoking subject.

    I find it fascinating howJE has compartmentalized his life.  He resent his father for his unethical business practices and probably resent HK for some of that as well.  However, he himself is an immoral  man carrying on an affair with another woman which in his mind is different from what his father is doing and not as bad. Breaking the marriage vows that he promised to his wife is somehow different than the business practices of his father--a marriage contract is still a contract. He also doesn't see SR's behavior as being that similar to his father and HK's business ruthlessness.  SR is a young woman who basically has the same unethical practices as his father. Just as his father is setting aside what's right and wrong to fulfill his own greedy desires, SR is doing the same thing.  Yet, JE doesn't see this young woman pursuing a married man as really doing anything wrong. Heck, he really doesn't see his own actions as wrong because so far he's doing them without guilt or remorse.

    So he's disliking these traits in his father that to a lesser degree SR also possesses. She's ruthlessly going after she wants despite the fact that there's a wife. JE doesn't want to taint himself in unethical business practices, but he's tainting himself in an unethical affair. Maybe he should look a little harder at himself in the mirror.

    What an excellent post. thanks. As someone has said this thread is more interesting than the show at this point.

    When watching k-dramas I often wonder about the writing process. Sometimes it seems like every little thing has been carefully thought of and everything you see has meaning. I am so impressed by them at these times and wonder what makes this possible. Other times it seems like ideas are simply thrown at the screen and I wonder why they were allowed to get away with this. I have not made up my mind yet on where this show will fall on that spectrum. JE's character currently makes me worry we are seeing something closer to the latter style.

    We have not seen enough of his thought process to know what he is thinking at all. He has said it is wrong to have an affair but still he has decided to do it. Why is something that is still unclear to me. We don't know that he is lacking guilt or remorse but I suspect he is going to suffer from both pretty soon if he isn't already.  And maybe he will awaken to what he has done to HK.

    I really like your analysis of SR as a ruthless person comparable to his father. I can only hope taht the writer also sees this parallel and somehow includes that in the story.

    (edited to add response re kissing)
    Since you think he might be holding himself back then I presume you agree with me that the kisses lack some steam? I think that it must be hard on the spouses to see the kisses. No matter how many people are watching and how professional the actors it is still a very intimate act. I can not think of another regular profession where kissing occurs. [I am not surprised about the porn star thing. I have heard this is often true for prostitutes as well. But I would think spouses of these people have more to worry about than just kissing.]

    There is a good blog post on k-drama kisses at
    http://www.koreandrama.today/watch/korean-drama-kisses/.

  5. This is a total aside to our current discussion but I have a question for those who are familiar with Ji Jin Hee's work. Are there examples of him actually doing a steamy kiss scene? In One Warm Word he had loads of chemistry with both women but the only kiss and another bed scene were shrouded in shadow. In Take Care of Us Captain the kiss scene in the elevator was nauseating and I decided I could not watch a show with the two leads getting together and stopped. He Who Can't Get Married had him doing some amazing physical humour so his awkward kissing was appropriate. I saw him in a sageuk whose name I can't recall and again the kissing was awkward.  And in our current show the elevator kiss scene was mostly in shadow and only shot from behind. Thoughts?

  6. I finally finished episode 6 and feel I can join in the discussion. Like others have already posted I am finding the story dragging quite a bit and am hoping that it gets more interesting once we get to the amnesia part of the story. And I hope we get there soon. I am beginning to be a bit apprehensive about the 50 episode format. It can be a great way to tell a complex story with many characters. But it can also be torture to watch if not done well. Prime example: I was wanting to poke my eyes out with a rusty fork by the end of Rosy Lovers.

    Great discussions @everyone! I also currently have way more questions and not enough answers. So I am waiting to see how everything unfolds. And the characters and their actions and thoughts. I know there is more than meets the eyes here. I also think that there must be more than meets the eye too to the death of their daughter (HK and JE's). It could be just merely a simple case of complete neglect on HK's part or something far more elaborate involving others.

    <snip>

    JJH is the reason I am watching this and I admit that it is a struggle to stay with it. I have been burned many times and I just can't stand his character here. I really didn't think his character would became that horrible. Can he even be redeemed? Maybe he needs to have amnesia too.

    <snip>

    I hope that they both get a huge shock once "HK" returns. And more BS!!! And less SR and JE. I stand by that. I hope we can get past this part so we can move onto the amnesia part. This is the first time that I actually wanted the amnesia part to come faster. Historical first for me in kdramas.

    I also hope that the death of the child is more fully explained. This might make sense of Hae-Kang's behaviour. Was she always this cold and ruthless? If not when did she change? Or was it Jin-Eon who changed? Or maybe these were their personalities all the time but it was only the death of their child that made them unable to stand the other person's ways.

    Like you I came to this show because of JJH and i am also finding it a struggle. I am not entirely buying his character. Not sure if that is the acting, directing or writing. Probably a little of everything. I don't mind that his character is a cheater because every story needs a bad guy but so far JE is simply boring.

    Your final paragraph I agree with 100% Who knew i could actually wish for the amnesia part.

    HK has been portrayed as this unsympathetic, ruthless attorney, who is insensitive to her husband and the loss of her child....but with Kim Hyun Joo as HK the subtle undertones of her personality do shine through.  We Feel the pain she keeps to herself, we understand the absolute desperation and helplessness she is experiencing, and we know her facade of a woman in charge is far from reality.

    These first episodes have been very woe is me for SR.  Am I supposed to see this affair as romantic and justified? If that's what the writer is going for then to me it's an epic Fail.
    <snip>

    KHJ is an actress I have not seen before but I think she is doing a stand-up job. I really buy her as 2 people. And I do feel sympathy for HK. If it was not for her I think I would have given up already on this drama.  I don't think we are supposed to see SR's actions as acceptable. perhaps we are just to understand which things occurred to make her decide to behave in this despicable manner.

    According to Wikipedia:: "Adultery (anglicised from Latin adulterium) is extramarital sex that is considered objectionable on social, religious, moral or legal grounds. Though what sexual activities constitute adultery varies, as well as the social, religious and legal consequences, the concept exists in many cultures and is similar in IslamChristianity and Judaism".

    Adultery has no justification, even though everyone tries to find reasons ....

    Jin Uhn, besides adultery is a cruel and heartless person. This character makes me nauseous, why I think writers, director and actor are doing a good job.

    On the other hand if Kang Hae at the end of the drama and magic of the writers she stays with her husband, I'll be very disappointed, and would be a waste of drama.

    And now I remember, Ji Jin Hee has already represented a husband adulterer in another drama (one warm word) seems to be an expert in such matters :)

    Very few posters seem to want them to be together. If the married couple are not together at the end of a kdrama that will be quite interesting. If they are together then the writer better do an amazing job to change our minds or we will all have wasted 50 hours ala Rosy Lovers.

    It is funny you mention One Warm Word and say JJH's character was an adulterer along with the definition you provided. In that show the extra-marital couple did not have sex (or even kiss as i recall) so don't meet your definition. But by that show's definition they are having an affair even though they don't cross that official line. His character here is sooo much more reprehensible than in OWW. I do think the writer is trying to make us feel sympathy for him with his dead child and cold wife but for me it has been an utter fail. Whereas in OWW I was able to feel understanding for all the characters.

    @ayselluna     He is just such a good actor, he makes people believe this is who he is...... We need to remember to separate the man from the character he plays.

    <snip>

    It just so happens that several of my actor biases chose to play villains this year. I guess when I see how so many people hate their characters, I need to remind myself that they are doing such a fine job as actors.

    I find it interesting how often it seems that people get angry at a character and then sometimes also at the actor who plays the character. For me the character can be a murderer and still be a good character. I only get angry if the character behaves in an inconsistent manner, or if the story is boring or insults my intelligence. Then I will froth at the mouth (Have I mentioned Rosy Lovers ;) ) I shall try to remember to use your reasoning in future and remind myself the actor must be doing a good job to illicit all this hatred.

  7. I'm wondering if I should continue to watch this show or not. As others have mentioned 50 episodes is a lot and Ji Jin-hee's character is so far pretty annoying. But my biggest concern is that the subtitles are not complete and I am thinking they might continue like this. I felt like I was ok for the first two episodes despite missing subtitles but in episode 3 I think I am missing out on key lines. I am watching on Viki and I don't know how likely it is with their method of subtitling volunteers for these to ever get completed. Is there somewhere else to watch with full subtitles? Should I just wait a month and see if it is getting done or not? Any thoughts appreciated.

    When are you watching the episodes? It did take episodes 1 & 2 around 5 days to get subbed completely. But episodes 3 & 4 were at 96% subbed about 1 day after it aired. I considered that pretty fast compared to the first two episodes. Not that I'm complaining. It takes some time to find people and form a team to sub, edit, and segment the episodes. They are volunteering the time to do this for others. I'll say wait about a day or so before checking to see if the subs are close to being finished. I don't think this drama is licensed anywhere else. I hope this info is helpful.

    Please don't get me wrong. The people at Viki are volunteers and are much appreciated for that.  And whatever time they take is the time they take. As you say 96% after a day or two is really quite fast and plenty fast enough for me. Odd that you say that eps 1 & 2 are completely done as I see only episode 1 as 100%. I just was wondering how likely it is that episodes would never hit 100%. And also wondering if it were licensed elsewhere. Thanks for answering and yes it is helpful.
