  1. (Movie Review) 'Man of Will': Kim Koo biopic sheds new light on national heroMore

    By Shim Sun-ah

SEOUL, Sept. 29 (Yonhap) -- Kim Koo, one of Korea's most respected national heroes, has had a couple of movie cameos but has never been a central figure in any of the films.

That's probably because his presence as a prominent Korean independence fighter and president of the provisional Korean government in exile in Shanghai in the 1940s is too much to handle for commercial movies. Korea was a colony of Japan from 1910 to 1945, and he is often mentioned as the rival of South Korea's founding leader Rhee Syng-man.

At any rate, this new sentimental addition to the cult of Kim, written and directed by Lee Won-tae, is more interesting than it could have been.

This video released by the Kiwi Co. is a trailer of "Man of Will" (Yonhap) Watch on Youtube

As astonishingly portrayed by Cho Jin-woong, "Man of Will" does not depict Kim as the usual indomitable political leader, but a single-minded, high-octane and exasperated young man with a strong sense of justice.

Based on the real-life story of Kim, whose real name was Kim Chang-soo, the film opens with a scene in which Kim fights against a Japanese man at a tavern in his hometown of Haeju, Hwanghae Province, in 1896. Chang-soo is later put behind bars and sentenced to death for killing the man whom he believed was the assassin of Korea's Empress Myeongseong. Many historians say the man he killed was not the assassin but an innocent merchant.

In the Incheon prison, Chang-soo refuses to mingle with other inmates and eat meals, claiming that he is not a criminal but just took revenge for the empress. But from there, he witnesses the persecution of his fellow countrymen, mostly illiterate and lower-class people who were detained without trial, and realizes what he ought to do for the country.

Writing letters petitioning on behalf of falsely convicted prisoners and teaching them Korean and Chinese letters, he then becomes their "captain." Ma Sang-gu (Jeong Man-sik) and other prisoners who have only endured the suffering lamenting their own misfortune are also gradually transformed with the realization that they can change if they desperately want to.

Interestingly, the film imagines Chang-soo gradually changing his attitude and opening up his mind to fellow inmates with the influence of Mr. Go, another death-row inmate (Jeong Jin-young), who is a gentle and literate nobleman jailed for leading a Donghak peasantry movement. He teaches that all people are equal and deserving of respect.

This photo provided by the Kiwi Co. is a scene from "Man of Will." (Yonhap)This photo provided by the Kiwi Co. is a scene from "Man of Will." (Yonhap)

This biopic also wittily invents diverse characters out of Kim's fellow prisoners and prison guards to make the story more palatable. Chang-soo's friendship with Go, however, is sketched too superficial even though that encounter is considered an important turning point in the young man's life.

Song Seung-heon, one of the leading actors behind the Asianwide boom of Korean pop culture known as "hallyu," plays the prison director Kang Hyeong-sik.

The film constantly contrasts the bright and affluent upper-class lives of Japanese officials and the pro-Japanese Koreans like Kang and the dark and bleak atmosphere of the prison and its inmates.

Song's performance as the strikingly charismatic and temperamental jailer lacks the necessary emotional subtlety even when he suffers the mental conflict going on inside his mind caused by his job of oppressing his fellow countrymen.

Surprising viewers who have no idea at all regarding who Kim Chang-soo is, the movie tells that he is Kim Koo, who later became president of the provisional Korean government in exile, only before the ending. The director has said in press events that he intended to give young audiences the lesson that even commoners can become a hero like him.

"Man of Will" opens Oct. 19.

Hi Mari, thanks for sharing this here.  Ye, I want to see SSH in a drama again. I hope he takes this. I like OCN as much as I like tvN.  Grim Reaper? It's the trend now.  I'm feeling this goblin's vibe. Well, each drama has their own ways of portraying the overall theme, anyway.  The plot is actually quite new for Kdramas....I'm gonna give this drama a go in case SSH will accept this. I adore SSH. I guess they would be pretty to look at especially SSH.  Although, Go Ara is still quite young. Let's cross our fingers then.....

In this drama, SSH is the main lead. It's different with Saimdang that more focus with Lee Young Ae. I'm sure in this drama i can watch more SSH scene. Go Ara is young beautiful popular actress. She can attract younger viewer. The plot is interesting. Director and writer are known for their success project before. I hope they'll accept it.

Song Seung-heon and Go Ara for reaper-human romance in OCN thriller Black

    by tineybeanie

    blackityblack.jpg

For potentially his first cable drama ever, Song Seung-heon (Saimdang, Light’s Diary) is eyeing the upcoming fall OCN thriller Black as his next project, while Go Ara (Hwarang) is also in talks to become the female lead.Black is be about a a grim reaper who borrows the body of a man and ends up falling in love with a human woman. Because this goes against the rules of heaven, he’s punished by having any record of his existence erased such that there’s no trace of him left in the world’s memory.

If he confirms, Song Seung-heon will play the lead character, Han Moo-kang, who has two nicknames: “Grim Reaper of Criminals” and “Man in Black.” Moo-kang was originally a bright, cheerful man with a flamboyant fashion sense, until a secret caused a complete reversal in his life. Now he’s a stoic, blank-faced individual who wears black from head to toe. He’s known for not flinching at the most gruesome of crime scenes and for staying expressionless when faced with gory brutalized corpses.

On the other hand, details on Go Ara’s character have not been released, but I’m assuming she’ll play the human woman that the grim reaper fell in love with. From reading the synopsis, it seems like a mish-mash of 49 Days and the secondary love story in The Lonely Shining Goblin, both of which I enjoyed for the heart-wrenching dilemmas presented in loving a technically immortal/dead spiritual entity. (There’s also a a pinch of Hollywood movieMeet Joe Black in there.)

Just one more reason to watch if you’re into dark mysterious dramas: Blackis a collaboration between God’s Gift–14 Days writer Choi Ran and Voice PD Kim Hong-sun, and this pair definitely knows how to play up those excellent thrilling elements.

OCN’s new supernatural crime-thriller Black will premiere this October.

Song Seung Heon’s Agency Addresses Rumors About Breakup With Liu Yi Fei

    Liu-Yi-Fei-Song-Seung-Heon.jpg

Song Seung Heon shut down rumors that he has broken up with actress Liu Yi Fei.

On May 27, a source from his agency said, “The reports by Chinese reports that Song Seung Heon broke up with Liu Yi Fei are untrue. They are still happily dating.” They emphasized, “This isn’t the first time they were wrapped up in breakup rumors. In particular, the reports that the breakup was due to the Chinese ban on Korean cultural content is simply wrong.”

The statement was made after a Chinese media outlet reported on May 25 that the couple had broken up. They had reported that the two had become awkward with each other after the Korean cultural content ban and that Korean netizens were against him dating her. They had also said that Song Seung Heon ended the relationship to bring back the fans who left him.

Meanwhile, Song Seung Heon and Liu Yi Fei have been in a public relationship since 2015 after meeting on the set of the movie “Third Love.” They were swept up in breakup rumors multiple times in the past as well.

Song Seung Hun and Liu Yi Fei once again deny baseless breakup rumors, still going strong

    song-seung-hun

Song Seung Hun and his label Better Ent. strongly denied another wave of baseless breakup rumors with Chinese actress Liu Yi Fei on May 27.

This past May 25, Chinese media outlets claimed that the couple broke up after suffering a rift in their relationship as a result of the THAAD issue, and that Song Seung Hun's Korean fans "were heavily against the actor continuing to date a Chinese actress." The news went even further, reporting, "Song Seung Hun recently sent Liu Yi Fei a one-sided breakup message... the reason for their breakup being that they cannot bring each other happiness."

Song Seung Hun's side has stepped up to reveal, "The recent Chinese reports stating Song Seung Hun and Liu Yi Fei have broken up are completely false. They are still meeting well. This isn't the first time Chinese media outlets have reported false breakup news. The claims that they broke up because of THAAD is especially untrue."

Song Seung Hun and Liu Yi Fei have been a public celebrity couple since 2015.

  11. 10 Wealthiest Korean Stars In Terms Of Real Estate Holdings

Wealth can be measured in various ways, and real estate is a prime example.

During its April 18 broadcast, SBS’s “Night of Real Entertainment” took a look at the 10 Korean celebrities who currently hold the most amount of real estate, after recent news of Jun Ji Hyun’s recent purchase of a multi-million dollar building in the Gangnam district of Seoul.

The actress now holds 77 billion won (approximately $67.7 million) worth of real estate, making her the second wealthiest in terms of property holdings. In a previous assessment back in 2014, Jun Ji Hyun was notably the only female in the list of wealthy stars based on similar factors, and had placed seventh at the time.

SM Entertainment’s founder Lee Soo Man maintains his spot in first place, with 110 billion won (approximately $96.6 million) in real estate, while YG Entertainment’s founder Yang Hyun Suk also continues in third place, holding around 53.1 billion won (approximately $46.7 million) of property.

Singers Rain and Seo Taiji are in fourth and fifth place, with holdings worth 43.8 billion won (approximately $38.5 million) and 41 billion won (approximately $36 million) respectively.

Actors Jang Geun SukJo Jae HyunKwon Sang Woo, and Song Seung Hun follow in sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth place, respectively. Jang Geun Suk owns 38 billion won (approximately $33.4 million) in real estate, Jo Jae Hyun owns 36 billion won (approximately $31.6 million), Kwon Sang Woo owns 35 billion won (approximately $30.8 million), while Song Seung Hun owns 33.4 billion won (approximately $29.3 milllion).

In 10th place is entertainer and retired athlete Seo Jang Hoon, whose property holdings worth 30.9 billion won (approximately $27.2 million) were recently revealed to the public.

Are you surprised by these results?

I really don't like Saimdang. This is the worst SSH drama.

Sorry i always complaint. But this is really disappointed. I'm as a fan waiting for 4 years to watch his new drama.

SSH acting in this drama is good. But the storyline only focus for Lee Young Ae. The story is also ridiculous,

Recently his popularity had decreased. He need a good agency/ management company to help his career. Or he can join a reality show to boost his popularity. I really worry of his career. After Saimdang fail to get viewer attention, it's hard for him to get sponsor.

He upload these photo on Weibo today

Hi Mari well, pregnant or not, I just hope they're doing fine. Thanks for sharing more updates about the couple. Wait & see...........for more news on them. I guess she's still very young to settle down this time. IDK why you said that C-netizens don't like him when in the first place he has also lots of fans out there. I wonder what bad things are they writing about him, huh? I've read several about acting-wise but for personal, I haven't read anything. But, still you're talking about C-medias/netizens here, which I'm not really updated with. Are you always visiting Weibo? So NICE to know about their holiday vacation in Thailand. It's been quite a while now that I haven't heard anything about SSH except about his current drama.

Hi @willenette Yes, i often visit weibo, almost everyday . Chinese netizens don't like SSH, because they don't want LYF marry him. because of their culture, after married the woman will leave her family and go to husband family. So if LYF married with SSH, she will become Korean. some of them also said that SSH is not suitable for her in terms of age, popularity, etc.

Hi Mari, I saw her picture & she seemed to be a little bit rounder now. Despite, she’s still very beautiful. Besides, there’s speculation that the couple would be tying the knot this year soon. This is so random but well, this is definitely the year of announcements and marriages. SSH is 40-years old so, it’s about time! I’m sure his parents want him to get married ASAP. I just hope communication won’t be the problem since they communicate in English. I’m sure she’s fluent in that language since I read that she stayed in US for a long time. I hope SSH would learn to speak in English more. Eric is getting married soon now, who’s next – hahaha – Lee Jun Ki, Hyunbin or Jo Jin Moo.

    Hi @willenette

It seems she is not pregnant. She is just more chubby now. She denied the rumour with drinking champagne when she was attending Bulgari event several days ago.

LYF will shooting Hollywood movie "inversion". So i'm not sure they will be marry soon. Even yesterday she told that she hope to act with Amir Khan in a Chinese-Indian movie. She still pursue her career.

Until now, Chinese netizens don't like SSH. Many of them write the bad things about SSH on Weibo.

I read on fb, SSH and LYF just had holiday in Thailand last week.

Hi Mari, this is the reason why we say that ratings are important............... There are numerous dramas that pull in ratings still in the single digits. For that reason, there are some outside production houses that produce one or two dramas, then die out. South Korea is certainly not alone in the extremes that it will go to for ratings. The rating contributes to the sponsor. That's the entertainment industry for you.:(

SSH accepted the role in this drama because he know LYA as the female lead role. Maybe he was thinking LYA's drama will get good rating.

I hope SSH more selective in choosing role.

    His popularity has decreased recently.

So ji sub, his best friend is more popular nowadays.

In his new film, Captain Kim Chang Soo , he only got a second lead role.

He need to participate in reality show to boost his popularity.
