  1. Dang, this past episode really made me turn against JR. I get that he's PG's father and everything, but leveraging PG against DB? After he's been absent for so long and PG has been raised upright, he wants to have complete authority over him and  potentially take him away from his mother? That's a whole bunch of BS. I didn't like when DB and YS were trying to completely exclude PG from JR's life, but it goes both ways. It might have been something he said out of frustration/jealousy, but to even say that makes me really question his character and whether I've been thinking that he's been misunderstood is actually correct. He could just be a dirt bag lol. (Bravo to Kim Ji Suk though. I still really like the actor! He's done an excellent job).

But really, who is he to tell DB how to live her life when his own life is in shambles. He can't communicate with his wife and doesn't even like her, but doesn't have the manhood to do anything about it. He can't keep up this "Best Father"  and "Wonderful Husband" charade. PG knows it too. In this past episode, PG said that he disliked "Superman" more because of how he appears to be a doting father on the show, but his actions and his image aren't lining up. PG doesn't call JR "Dad"; he calls him "Superman". JR thinks he's being a good father by providing for PG with the superficial goodies (like the back pack), but to be a good father, he needs to be PRESENT, not give presents.  That's the angle the writers are definitely going for. In the episode before this one, YS was the one who was present when PG got into that scruffle, and he was the one who got recognition from PG. That's what a real father does, not just from behind the scenes. JR doesn't seem to comprehend (yet) that if he wants to be a part of PG's life, he needs to do more. He can't just be in the shadows. To break his one sided thinking that money can get you anything, he may have to lose everything to see what really matters in his life. I don't think he's completely reconciled with the fact that even with all the riches that he appears to have, he's miserable. Like all the characters in this drama, I still have hope that he'll redeem himself and be able to get these messages through his thick skull. It wouldn't be character progression if he didn't have a lot to fix with in himself.

As for KR, his puppy dog eyes! He in no way can hold a candle to YS but in spite of his utter selfishness, I can't help but pity him. It breaks my heart to see him so pitiable. He has realized too late what he has lost. What baffles me and kind of angers me is his hypocrisy. He wants to hold DB's hand and be a father to his son, yet he lacks the guts to stand up to his wife and divorce her. He lets his wife have her way. He even turns a blind eye to his wife abandoning the baby. He truly isn't man enough to stand up and 'hold' DB's hand. He hasn't earned that right yet, even if he is Pilgoo's father and he has shared a past with DB. He truly confuses me. He doesn't bat an eye when HM blackmails him. Then, why oh why is he so unmanned? Man up and fight for your woman! Or just remain silent and let a better man win her over.

I 10000% agree with you. I think Kim Ji Seok plays the character to the T. A+ Acting! He's so pitiful looking, and you want to dislike him by the way he has acted, but you somehow can't seem to hate him. You can tell that he really cares for Pil Gu and wants to be in his life, and it isn't just because of Dong Baek. Even if it doesn't work out with DB, I don't think he would just abandon Pil Gu. He goes out of his way to see him and connect with him. He cares for him deeply. Him crying on the bridge broke my heart too.

That being said, I definitely don't think that JR and DB should be together. I think he'll come around and see that YS and DB are a match at this stage of their lives and that their moment has passed. Once he gets over his ego, I think he'll come to see that YS is a perfectly capable man who has made DB into a better person. They belong with one another.

The one thing that has sort of bothered though is the fact that DB is trying to push JR totally out of the picture, so that he can't be in his son's life. His intentions are pure, and he should be allowed to be a part of PG's life. I wish JR was better at expressing himself and not coming of as a total scum bag. I swear every time he opens his mouth he seems to say the wrong thing, even if his heart is in the right place.  Sigh.

Also, I don't understand why he doesn't just get a divorce either. I understand that it's totally taboo in Korea to get a divorce, but she's literally the worst. I'm sure the reason for their loveless marriage isn't one sided, but at this point, she is SO unlikeable. It's hard for me to believe why they even got married in the first place.

LOL sorry for the JR eccentric post. He's just one of the more fascinating characters to me in this drama haha.

  3. I'm definitely in trouble. I'm a huge fan of kim ji suk, so I knew coming in that my ship would sink because he's the second lead. That being said, so far, I'm unimpressed with his character. He definitely comes off as not a nice guy and when compared to Haneul's character, even more so. I can't wait to see how this plays out. My prediction is that both the side relationships (the peanut guy lol and his lawyer wife/ Kim Ji Suk's character and his instagram wife) will fall back in love with each other via finding out why they fell in love with each other in the first place. Also, in the drama's description, it says that Dong Baek's love interests are a "good, bad, and cheap guy". The good guy is Haneul's character, the cheap guy I'm assuming is the land lord, and the bad guy...is unfortunately Kim Ji Suk. He definitely seems like he's a family man, so I'm looking forward to him redeeming himself by becoming more involved with his son's life, even if it excludes being with his mother. What are your guys' impressions of the men?

What do you think Ae Shin mean when she said to Eugene that she must save the geisha in red...

EC:  Saving one woman will not save Joseon.

AG:  I must save her. Because one day, she will become like me.

I think she meant that maybe one day the geisha could become someone like her who can take up a more proactive approach in the quest to save Joseon.

  5. Hey guys. I just started watching "Mr. Sunshine", and I must say that I'm not completely invested in the show just yet. I'm intrigued most by the tensions between the countries and the relationship dynamics between the characters, but to me, the love lines kind of fall short.

First of all, can anyone tell me why Kim Min Jung's character, the owner of the Glory Hotel, likes Eugene? Did I miss something? At what moment did she suddenly fall in love with him to the point where she is willing to threaten Lady Ae-Shin and suggest to Hee Sung that he forcibly marry her?  As for Eugene and Dong Mae, neither really appeal to me. I can't quite put my finger on why I don't really like Eugene. To be honest, it may be the actor who is playing him, or maybe it's just that I don't feel a lot of chemistry between the two just yet. I do like the backbone of their relationship though. He's someone who accepts and loves Lady Ae-Shin's real self, not the role that she's supposed to play as the dainty noblewoman who only knows how to paint and arrange flowers. This is in direct contrast to Hee-Sung's character who appears to see her as just that. He's a playboy too, and he only becomes enthusiastic about the idea of marrying her after seeing her beauty. He's being portrayed as a pretty superficial character thus far. I loved when Lady Ae-Shin called him out on his bullsh*t too. I also don't like the whole vibe that he had in episode 7 with the whole "I don't want to do anything with any ill intentions". It feels sinister. On the other hand, Dong Mae seems like he has some serious insecurities over his societal status, and I can't help, but question his infatuation with her. Why does he like her so much? Is it because she was the first person to have treated him like a decent person, or is it because she's someone that he can't have because of who he is? I also didn't like the whole scene where he like touches the bottom of her skirt and wouldn't let go for an extended period of time. That was not a good vibe either. All of this being said, I'm willing to give everyone a chance since there are so many unanswered questions and plenty of time to develop their characters and relationships. All I know so far is that I'm TEAM AE-SHIN. She's bad a** haha. I care more about her mission to save Joseon than any of these love lines put together.

Despite the pretty weak love lines, I'm fascinated by most of the characters individually. Out of all the characters, I want to learn more about Hee-Na and Hee-Sung the most. Before it was revealed that Hee-Na was the daughter of the main antagonist, I just saw her character typecasted as someone who was just going to gas light the conflict between the three men who are interested in Lady Ae-Shin. I saw her character previously as someone who was just going to push that plot along. I'm glad that her role isn't so one dimensional. I'm so mystified by her mother's storyline and her husband's shady death. I love that she stands her own ground and is a strong female character here, too. Hee-Sung is interesting as well because despite what we've seen so far, there's definitely more to him. I suspect that his constant smiling and joking attitude is just scratching at the surface of his character. All of the girls and his extended stay away from his family could  be a distraction  from confronting his own personal conflict as a nobleman. He definitely is aware of his position and the potential sins that his family has committed. I think it's quite odd that when Eugene besmirches his parents, he doesn't even question it. He doesn't get angry, and he doesn't seem surprised. I might even venture to say that he may feel apologetic? Maybe that's me just hoping that I'll end up liking his character since I like the actor portraying him. I'm wondering what the writers have in store for his character. What are your thoughts?

  6. Hello all! New here to this forum, but not to soompi. It's been a while, but here are my thoughts.

First, this drama is fun (Duh!) I love how the main love interest isn't an absolute you know what; he's a real sweetheart, but I do like the second love interest as well. To me, Yoon Do is really cute. I was just skimming through the comments so sorry if I'm taking out this out of context because I basically am. @lclarakl I read your post on Yoon Do on how you thought he was pushy and going out of bounds with the way he was approaching Hye Jung. I couldn't disagree more. That thought actually didn't even cross my mind. I thought that that scene where Yoon Do was confessing was adorable. Did you guys spot the little fist pump that he made at the end like "Yea, I nailed it!". I mean talk about being cute! (Side note: The only weird thing I did notice was when Hye Jung was talking in front of the elevator about how her step mom abused her, he was suddenly attacked by his one sided lovey dovey feelings. That was a really awkward time to bring that up!) Anyways, back to your post.  Right off the bat, when you said, "He tried to use her stepmother's surgery as a way to eat dinner with him, though she's refusing his personal advances", my basic reaction was "?!?!?!?!??!:blink::expressionless::expressionless:?!?!?!?!". You shouldn't disregard that the root of him doing the surgery was out of genuine concern. He definitely didn't do the surgery with the mindset that "hey, if I do this, she might maybe have dinner with me". If you believe that, then that my friends is called cynicism. . Can't a guy be nice and considerate without having other agendas?  Granted, he may have leaned on the fact that he did do her step mother's surgery to get closer to her, but I don't think he did it specifically to get something in return.  In Hye Jung's words, "That's quite a stretch!". With all of this being said, the raw dialogue did make me feel uncomfortable with his character and had me thinking that Yoon Do was really creepy at least initially. I mean how can one not read this and think that it's not really freaking weird??

"Girls like cringy things. At first they say it's cringy and reject it, but in the end they fall for it. This cringy thing is quite addictive. Cringe, cringe"........"I'm thinking of you as a woman. Let's eat the cafeteria food together tomorrow. Let's eat together and go into the surgery." As Hye Jung was about to speak, Yoon Do stops her by saying, "The answer is, yes."

But you have to consider the delivery and the way that Hye Jung reacted to it. When I watched the scene, I thought it was cute how he was trying to use aegyo to make her laugh. There certainly wasn't any malice in it, and she did crack a smile for him. Knowing Hye Jung's fierce personality, do we really believe that if he was crossing a line she wouldn't say anything or at the minimum, kick his ***? Of course you could say that she didn't have the opportunity to reject him, but this is a drama, and according to drama tropes, we need the second love interest to fall for her and think he has a chance before the girl ultimately and inevitably crushes his soul in the nicest way possible. (Don't forget he needs to see the two main characters kiss while he stands lonely in the background with rain pouring on his shoulders! :sweatingbullets::sweatingbullets::sweatingbullets:) All I'm saying is that all he wants to do is get to know her and be around her when in a busy/work setting, he doesn't have the opportunity to have very lengthy conversations with her. @andreasofia16 I don't think he's harassing her so I'm not digging the whole "plan to conquer her" narrative. It sounds a little harsh to me and of course, he doesn't know all the details of her background!  I'm sure he'll get to know her on a better basis. I also doubt that he'll be too stubborn to let her go considering that he  understands the basic dynamic of a relationship which is mutual feelings. He was blunt with Seo Woo about the need to have both partners have sparks to create a fire/ relationship so he must know when enough is enough.

Thanks for your analysis. I agree with you 100%. He's forcing him on her in different ways. I just hope that now than he knows that JH an HJ are in a relationship, doesn't get stubborn and continue with his plan to conquer her. He could be cool or fun, but not as a boyfriend material but as a friend material for her. She has been clear from the beginning but he thinks that she ultimately will acepts him. He really has no idea how she is.

I know that the raw dialogue (without the delivery/reaction) makes him seem like a little too much, but again, all I really see is a dorky guy who wants a chance. Of course, I could be wrong about all of this, but we'll see if he's still "pushy" in the next couple of episodes. In the coming episodes though, I have a funny suspicion that we'll see more of his sweet and sincere side.  I'll be rooting for him to have his own happy ending since we all know how this is going to end! Come on Yoon Do supporters (as a character, not necessarily as a partner for Hye Jung)!  Where you guys at? You know you guys don't see him as some creepy villainous guy!

  7. @craptelly Oh I see! I mean RM is all about running so I guess he's not a good choice! Lol but if spontaneity is what RM needs, who else would you reccommend as a possible new member? Also, about the kang line and yoo line, why does that matter? I'm just curious because there are multiple examples where co-hosts from both of their "lines" are hosts on shows from the latter. Some examples include Eun Ji Won with Come to Play and Noh Hong Chul with 1N2D. Can you explain to me the different line concept?

@herolee10 If you read my previous post, I think they want to refrain from reusing the same ideas because they get old too. The members are experts at the games that they used to play every week. It's enjoyable, but doesn't have the same effect (in original formatting) as it once did at least in my opinion. Just imagine it being played every week with the same type of outcomes and alliances! As also mentioned in my previous post, the members aren't as passionate as they used to be when it comes to games like the name tag ripping. For this reason, I believe that's why the producers are trying new things and playing the trademark games every once and a while to keep it "fresh" if that makes sense. As for the formatting now, I don't think multiple different mini games are the answer either, but trying new things is a must. If the producers can figure out another large and brilliant game like nametag ripping, it can expand their trademark games and give it a new feel. If not, they could always resort to playing a few staple mini games over a stretch of episodes (as they did in the beginning of RM) such as the Tea Time or Catch the Theif. All of these random mini games sometimes can throw the audience off when there are also a dozen other people playing a dozen other mini games in the same episode, but then again I really loved the toast segment in episode 206. The PD's have good ideas, but sometimes the balance of games between members or the editting can be lackluster. One thing for sure though, they're doing the right thing by looking for new concepts, but they just haven't found the jackpot yet.

    ----------------------------------------------

1N2D Parallel: I think the key to season one's success is the fact that the episodes were more focused on the members themselves and their genuine interactions and bonds that they created with one another. The sense of family and brotherhood was there and the same type of feelings are existant in RM too, but in smaller doses and pieces. (Most notably in gifs provided by OTP tumblrs~Thank you!) Running Man also does have a certain amount of, for a lack of better words, "fake" interactions that many fans are turned off by. I am pretty neutral when it comes to MC , but there sure are some extreme fans and antifans on both sides. It's hard for the PD's to please everyone, but this aspect does make a substantial amount of fans feel as if it is an ingenuine relationship used as a tool for both Ji Hyo and Gary to recieve air time. However, on the flip side, there are people who watch RM for MC and their interactions with one another. The point is, if the producers changed the formatting and focused on the family aspect the members have with one another, the ratings would surely increase! I mean there are entire tumblrs dedicated to pointing out even the smallest of unnoticed interactions between them! What are your thoughts?

  8. How do you guys feel about another member joining Running Man? Personally, I think it would be a good idea. I love and appreciate the bond that all of the running members have, but a new face would be like a breath of fresh air. It would mix things up and a new process of understanding, connection, and new "characters" would appear! If there was a new member and the games were concentrated between the members, then I think the ratings would go up all by themselves. The question is who? What do you guys think?

    Possible New Member:

As of watching episode 209 and beginning to become a fan of Eun Ji Won, he would be an awesome choice! I loved his clever way of attempting to cheat out the Running Man team. His character could clash and perhaps renew Kwang Soo's character as a betrayal icon and not to mention, he's adorable. The cast also seems familiar with him. @craptelly What do you think? You seem to be a fan of him and more than likely know more about him than I would.

Sidenote: Choosing the right person, I believe is the key. Choosing the wrong person could possibly have the reverse effect.

Games: The latest episodes range from good to okay to ehh, but the beginning episodes are far more superior. It was funny to see the cast members become family and push boundaries between each other. (Biting Noona!!)

Name Tag Ripping Game: I don't necessarily suggest the name tag ripping game every episode. It is entertaining and still will be, but the members are practically experts at it. They don't really have that same fiery spirit that they had before when it comes to this game. Instead of running away and trying to hide, they face one another and get it over with all together if that makes sense. They use the same techniques of banding together against Jong kook and him standing in the corner as always. New guests really are no match.

Bells Hide and Go Seek: I love this game!!! It requiress hiding, suspense, and it's just awesome in general. (Except the latest suzy one. That one lacked suspense. It was more about getting everyone in a small time frame than honing into where the members were hiding, what they were feeling, and the uneven teams was a total disadvantage.) Perhaps, upon reflection, this game is also at the end of its time.

Episodes with 3782738292 Guests: To be honest, these episodes always seem to be less than satisfactory. I feel like real fans of Running man watch for the members and the occasional guest as brownie points and the appearance of several idols/actors at the same time is more of a marketing tool for fans of those specific people. In the minimal time frame that a Running Man episode has, it's unsatisfactory for everyone when each person gets so little air time or when someone gets none at all!

Ddakji/algakki: I don't prefer epsiodes like these. Even if Suk Jin won (yay!), it wasn't all that entertaining.

Overall, I think the PD's need to rethink and do something different. I know it's easier to say than do, but it's necessary if they intend to raise the ratings. Some of you may say that they have with all these mini games and such, but those are a mix up when it comes to laugh factor. What do you guys think?

End Note: This post may have sound harsh and made me sound less of a fan than I am, but I assure you I am a HUGE fan of Running Man. Constructive criticism was my goal in this post. I just feel as though Running Man is facing a crisis. The rating are always last and the episodes/games/characters aren't as good as they use to be or well enforced. I'm afraid of cancellation. However, regardless of the ratings and the small qualms I have, I will watch til the end. I'll appreciate all episodes and watch it even if I don't prefer the formatting or games. I hope you guys don't misunderstand this post. Let me know what you think!
