Can we have all the applause for Court Lady Oh? Seriously, fan-freaking-tactic character and one fierce female we all deserve. Damn, the writing and execution (pun not intended) of her character are amazing. The way she schooled Wook and the King was breathtaking, her relationship with Soo and her poise in front of the Queen - this is what I have been waiting for in this show.
This whole episode was the tipping point and the emotions, writing and acting all finally, finally flowed. I do think they shouldn't cut certain scenes and it's what's letting the drama down, the coherency.
IU was excellent this episode, it's rare in a Saguek for female characters to show such emotion I find, unless they are a villain, she's been winsome and lovely so far, also stubborn and naive. Common character traits for main female leads, but I find IU's dedication to the character and plucky charm endearing. I don't get the hate.
LJK what can I say? He's just killling it, I do hope that they give him more to do than pine after Soo, we have seen hints of the characters intelligence and while I'm not saying I don't want to see more of my OTP, I do want to see more interaction between the brothers. LJK has great range and I'd like to see him stretch a little more.
Stand out for this ep as well: KHN, up until these last two episodes Wook has been one dimensional for me, however these last two episodes have intrigued me on his character. I fully believe he loves Soo however I cannot fault him for wanting to save his family, considering, from what I understand they have been put on the back burner thanks to Queen SM. His reaction to finding Yeon Hwa was the culprit for poison was interesting, KHN played the subtlety very well, and the needle throw was unexpected and sets up an interesting path for Wook and even after his conversation with Court Lady Oh, he still makes the decision to turn away from Soo which speaks volumes. In some ways Wook was more interesting than everyone as his character is finally doing more than grace is with that gorgeous smile and brooding eyes.
The music in this ep was glorious, especially the ending scene, urgh. Hopefully the trajectory stays this way and they up the ante as the battle for the throne starts in earnest.

Hurro chingu's!
Been a while since I posted anything - but i've enjoyed reading all your analyses about SHR. In general I definitely agree re: the editing. It seems rather strange to have two different versions and leave out crucial scenes that make the story flow better, but it is the only criticism I could give at this point.
I'm thoroughly enjoying the rest, the actors are settling in, the characters are currently consistent, the cinematography is stunning (the pink and aqua clothing IU was wearing looked beautiful on her, and the pace is picking up.
I am hoping that we will see more LJK as the story goes on, we are up to episode 8 now, so almost half-way, I have a feeling that the first half of the drama will be Soo/Wook focused which is understandable and KHN and IU are doing a wonderful job of selling the earnest and youthful stirrings of love - their smiles and joy around being near each other is uplifting and while I can appreciate that kind of love and romance, I am very much looking forward to the all-consuming more passionate affair with Soo/So.
Already we can see that Wang So is falling deeply for Soo and doesn't quite know what to do about it - which I find quite poignant. He almost seems scared to accept what he's feeling and i'm wondering what kind of sign he will need from HS to take that next step, unless HS takes it first. The unconditional support she gives him for no reason at all is heart-warming and LJK plays off this beautifully - he's exceptional at nuance.
There is more rolling around in my brain, don't get me started on Hae Soo's scar and how differently WW and WS have handled that. But work beckons, have a good day / evening everyone!

All the criticism and negative comments aside, i'm really enjoying this drama. I will admit coming on here and wanting to participate, it's hard to read such negativity and not wilt slightly - of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but hearing the same criticisms over and over again is draining. But as much as i'm entitled to gush over the drama, others are allowed to rant, that's the name of the game.
As a massive fan of the CDrama, I like how unrestrained and - I almost want to say 'lighter' this drama is in tone. I went into this drama not know what to expect and i'm very happy it's not a carbon copy but still respectful of the original material thus far. I realised while I was watching the third episode the reason I was so happy watching was because this drama wasn't overly serious or dry, many of the 'Epic' Sagueks have a lot of scenes where characters sit around and talk, or the romance is stilted and I need to be satisfied with sometimes (depending on the portrayal) a lukewarm glance or just a hug where the female is usually not engaged. What the CDrama did well was combine the romance with simmering and blatant emotion which wasn't overdone or used ineffectively or against the writing. That, combined with great writing, excellent acting and direction it was a recipe for success in my eyes and why I always recommend it.
With the Kdrama I haven't seen enough to fully 'compare', not that I really want to. Both drama's will have their own merits and weaknesses, they already have their own tones I believe which means comparing them may actually be a ridiculous endeavour despite a similar storyline. I'm not expecting an 'epic' and 'stirring' Saguek, I did that with Empress Ki and was disappointed as the story let me down, despite beautiful costumes, relatively good acting and lovely music. I am expecting a well-told story, full of emotion, which so far - SHR has delivered. The fresh, modern take allows me to see something a little different which is a nice change, part of me hopes to continue in the same vein, other parts of me hope they will go a little darker but as i've said in other posts, as long as the writing and characters are consistent, I will be satisfied at the very least.
Many Korean Dramas that have been described as 'epic' and 'stirring' have also been 50 plus episodes minimum and have had the time to dedicate to building up and having the characters grow over time. We don't have that luxury here, which is why find IU rather believable.
It's easy to forget that we are only three episodes in and how much can actually happen in the coming weeks. I personally find IU's character endearing and I think she has portrayed HaeSoo well. She's plucky without being annoying, her facial expressions are accurate and not over-done, she's also showing emotion rather than looking like a cardboard cut-out which I was afraid of from the posters and from what i've experienced from other historical dramas. She's intelligent but also naive of the world around her. I don't expect her to go from modern girl to 'agassi' overnight, not losing sight of who she once was was/still is? is important, it''s how we as a modern audience connect. I'm looking forward to her journey.
LJK, HJH & KHN are current stand outs, as is the woman who play's 8th Prince's wife. They show so much with so little.
This all said, my opinion could change, I have very much enjoyed dramas and then fallen to bitterness watching the last episode and thanking whatever Deity that it was over. I do hope that doesn't happen here or that all the criticism towards what was 'expected' doesn't take away from what is good about this drama. I'm enjoying reading everyone's opinions, good and bad, I suppose that's what's fun about fandom, being involved with a group of individuals from all around the world with different opinions, personalities and preference. It allows you to think about things in a way you wouldn't expect because you wouldn't have thought about it in "that" way unless someone else pointed it out to you.
Anywho, enough from me, it's late here and work tomorrow, sad panda. But yay, Friday!

Watched the first episode and I really enjoyed it. I don't want to compare it to much to BBJX and there will be somethings I'll be happy with that they change and maybe slightly unhappy at somethings they do change, but nevertheless I'm enjoying the story.
I like what I've seen of the characters so far, IU as Haesoo is whimsical, I like how they keep her modern behaviour but she also potentially realises the danger she's in. I'm looking forward to see where the character goes. IU will do a great job as long as the writing and direction is consistent.
LJK as 4th, I like the hints of vulnerability and anger, haven't seen too much yet to make a full opinion (from what I've read from here so far we get more in the next episode) but I have faith. LJK is excellent at showing a lot with so little, especially when the direction shows how capable he is at many physical feats.
KHN as 8th, I wished they had kept a similar love story like BBJX with 8th and Ruolan, it was a favourite part of mine and very well done, it made me like 8th Prince more. Regardless KHN is an excellent actor and while he probably won't win me over, I already like the character of the 8th Prince more.
Other actors, so far so good. I'm really looking forward to the relationship between 4th and his brothers and the ?astronomer?. Also HJH as 3rd prince, not an off the bat evil character but not inherently good either.
Unpopular opinion maybe, but I like the music. It doesn't drag the show down and try and make it over dramatic, especially at this point in the story where we are only getting started. It's light and peaceful in a romantic way which I enjoy. That's not to say I won't look forward to some stirring instrumental music, but I don't think the music ruins the drama personally.
Cinematography is stunning, my biggest hope for this drama is that the writing and direction is consistent and actions and personalities don't randomly change to make one character better than the other or to add something un-needed to the story.
I'm looking forward to the next few episodes which I'll watch when the subs are out. Many thanks to all here who posted! It kept me going throughout my working day!!

I just realized something...
Tomorrow I'll come back home around 10:30 p.m. (Middle Europe time zone) - by this time here will be bazillions of posts with your comments, thoughts, predictions for the rest of the drama, comparisons with c-drama, maybe history checking, posts about the drama, acting, music, views, characters, story, dialogues... I won't be a part of that because I'm in different time zone.
And I will have to wait until I see those 2 episodes to write anything which will be pointless because it won't be anything new - it will be probably a thing that was mentioned 3 or 4 pages of this thread ago. From tomorrow this thread will be difficult to keep on.
Sniff...
I know the feeling! It means staying away for no spoilers too!

Hmmm it's too late in the evening for more analysing but my brain won't shut off, that's how excited I am about this drama. Work tomorrow is going to feel so long and being three hours ahead, I may not be able to watch till Tuesday...first world problems.
My vote is for 4th Prince - I'm pretty certain it will remain that way, despite any unspeakable acts that may occur.

@redenzione The Crown Prince was #2, I believe.
@car148 I don't recall in any of the overviews mention of a favorite son, but I'm sure if it was revealed, someone else will chime in.
As for who will be ruling Goryeo in MLSHR, I'm wondering how closely they'll follow historical events. In real life, King Taejo was succeeded by #1, Wang Mu, who died 2 years later. Wang Mu was succeeded by #3, Wang Yu who ruled for 5 years. And then the 4th king of Goryeo was indeed Wang So who ruled for 26 years.
This is interesting if you keep in mind all the comments made either in the teasers or by one of the cast:
- Haesoo says in voiceover in the long teaser "someone will take the reigns and kill off his brethren". Have some thoughts about this, but this might be a better discussion to have after we've started the drama.
- Kim San-ho who plays 1st prince Wang Mu, let it slip that his character would be dying early on in the drama. Am very curious to see what happens to him.
- Joongi has mentioned that 14th prince will later have ambitions for the throne. It makes you wonder whether 14 may end up having a similar trajectory to 14 in the C-version where he starts to take a more active role in the military and administrative duties in order to help his father. If so, would he then become his father's favorite just as 14 was the favorite son in BBJX?
@mearhi_1 thank you for correcting me
The history you mention and the bullet points make me very interested to see what happens, whether the story will be similar to BBJX. I won't mind either way if the story is written well. I'm wondering if Haesoo will have a similar journey as Ruoxi did and what her endgoal is - it may affect what happens with the Princes' - especially with 8th, 4th and 14th Prince(s). What I find interesting is that the KDrama is less restrained, 4th Prince in the CDrama was very clever and patient and while he didn't outright kill his brothers, he definitely paved the way for their demise which was mostly executed after he began his reign. Which was contested but only briefly.

Chinggus, I have a question and sorry if this has been discussed before. In the extended trailer, the 3rd prince said that the princes are fighting because of their father's favoritism, who was the King's favorite? Is it the same as in the c-version that the King has a favorite son?
In the C-Drama the Kings favourite was the 'Crown Prince' who I don't think had a number (someone please correct me if i'm wrong?) following that the King's favourite was arguably the 14th Prince. They weren't necessarily fighting over the King's favour, it was more political and factioned in the CDrama and more fighting for the throne after the King's. I don't want to say much in case I spoil things for anyone, but still happy to discuss, if you would like more clarification. The CDrama version is my favourite drama of all time, but i'm still very much looking forward to the Korean take on the story. The CDrama was almost subtle with its romance and it made the story very moving, I think the Korean version (looking at the previews) may be a bit more 'sexy'.

Oh god - seeing that spoiler, part of me wants to see it because I KNOW it will be fantastic acting and just brilliantly done - but urgh....I may keel over from the pain and never come out of my room.
=(( X_X ( -
They end there?!?!?!
-
They just keep upping the ante don't they? Because of the extreme highs I'm expecting some drastic lows...the acting will be spot on and I can just imagine my flatmates asking me "are you okay?" as I walk out of my room looking like death warmed over as I watch it. Wah. 8-X
I have yet to watch this episode - Work beckons "sigh" but thanks for the live capping - seemed like a good episode, it set up a lot - what with seeing Sera's scar, her mother, Gun and MY and ALL OF THE FEELS. And just Daniel in general, he doesn't really need to do anything, I could just stare at him and I would be happy. Preferably with his shirt off, but hey - I'll take what I can get

Okay, so I lied - I said I wouldn't watch episode 7 except I totally did... B-)
Wah, so good - hilarious with the cake and eating it like he had just been terribly rejected or broken up with (which in a way, he had) ahaha, Gun you complete me.
Can't wait for episode 8 , I have 8 hours of work to go...woo.
This drama is fantastic, I haven't been this excited for a while about a drama and it's also been consistently good so far, part of me is kind of hoping for what happens in the TW version - only because the acting from the Jang's will be phenomenal and I would like to see where they go from there, but then again - I also wouldn't mind if they did away with completely because I can hear my heart cracking now.
Thank you for the stills/gifs and all around awesome comments and recaps chingu's! -
Hooooooooooomg, okay not watching episode 7 till episode 8 is out, I cannot handle that cliffhanger without immediate resolution. (
Thank you chingu's for all the updates! Love reading and hearing everyone's thoughts - I'll be catching up on Joseon Gunman until episode 8 is out tomorrow and then i'll have a FTLY weekend! Yummy chocolate is a prerequisite! -
Not too long to go now! Can't wait to watch tomorrow! If I didn't have work I definitely would be staying up late this evening to wait and watch this drama! b-(
-
I love the potential this show has - especially if it continues in the vein that it's in and not making Gun too much like the TW version male lead - i've just re watched and my current opinion is that the K version is far superior. So far.
There are some things in the TW version that I would like to have happen in this version - I won't put them here but I think a lot of you know what I'm talking about, the acting alone in those potential scenes could be absolutely amazing and the emotional impact just devastating.
For Sera - it's interesting because we haven't seen a lot of her as of yet, just little tidbits and quite frankly she could go either way - I'm of the opinion that she holds the power in the relationship and she wants to keep it that way, but it's a detriment to her relationship with Gun in the long term. MY and Gun are a team, shown right from the get go - them against the dogs / against evil boy / both drugged and thrown into parenthood, while Gun and Sera it's more that Gun adore's her and she basks in that. I don't personally think Gun and Sera are suited for each other (and the drama is making that more and more evident) but I also hope they don't turn her into a raging monster, there is really no right or wrong in this instance and I hope the drama handles it gracefully.
As for Daniel, well CJH - I adore him and have done so in nearly everything I've seen him in, but i'm a bit confused to his motives - we're seeing the breakdown of Se Ra and Gun's relationship while Daniel and MY's is slightly flourishing and in between that we have the OTP MY and Gun just throwing up rainbows and kittens and everything gorgeous and perfect in this world, they are showing us that Sera and Gun aren't meant for each other and I think they need to do the same for Daniel and MY once their relationship has had more time otherwise it's going to be a epic shipping war (in the best way.)
The show in general is filled with great little moments that I hope get fleshed out, MY and Gun picking out a name for one! -
Gahhh the wait is excruciating, can''t believe I have to wait a whole week for more episodes - I knew I should have waited!
Thanks for the recaps and gif's guys! The 'Snail' is currently my favourite overall metaphor, slow and steady wins the race!

I loved the quietness of this episode, such great moments between the leads. I like that Soo doesn't get over Wook so easily, it makes their romance more valid and it will be pivotal further down the track, if the Kdrama follows a similar route to BBJX.
Also it's a nice character trait for Soo to have, her loyalty is paramount and I wonder what it will take for her to finally move on from Woo and then to So, it's part of the journey, I do hope it's worth the wait.
What I do miss is the relationship between our lead female and the King, I loved that in the Cdrama and they briefly touch on it in this episode, however the lack of the relationship gave us Court Lady Oh, so I'd call it even.
I do hope they do a DVD and include any and all missing scenes, I would do unspeakable things to make that happen
