  1. 338 @partyon ~ I dropped matchmakers and was planning to check out the marriage contract. but somehow something or the other pops up. due to weather, we didn't have net for a few a days. I wasn't planning on cleaning this year but given how damp everything is, the furniture started to have some fungus. so I have had to oil them down for protection. so that is the extent of cleaning for now. rest will be before our new year in mid jan. I was thinking of checking it out today but then got sick. planning to travel for christmas and new year to visit family. so no idea if I will have time to check out the drama at my aunt's house. generally we are doing something even though we are doing nothing. there is also a wedding I have to attend before we leave. don't want to go but no choice. so december this year is a bit busy.
  2. I did quite a bit of reading on the doctors. they really went through a lot as they got hurt professionally. most affected was the doctor named kalle who decided to make the group to expose. there was actually 4 of them who did the paper to expose the fella but only 3 appeared in the documentary. https://leaps.org/a-star-surgeon-left-a-trail-of-dead-patients-and-his-whistleblowers-were-punished/particle-1 https://www.statnews.com/2021/10/04/stain-mars-karolinska-institute-awards-nobel-medicine/ 368
  3. 368 @joccu ~ I saw the documentary love under knife bad surgeon. my thoughts: -- I had actually heard about this story in some love scam type documentary; it was under half hour. so my first thought was this lady seems to have memorized her story because it was more or less the same stuff. -- the programme I had watched didn't go into the medical stuff. I really wanted to know more about the doctors who had fought to expose him, what happened to them afterwards and what they went through, what happened to the institute itself in sweden. that would have been more interesting for me. -- my snarky thought about the US lady who got cheated was that she was probably a terrible journalist. or maybe the swedish producer didn't get fooled because he couldn't be seduced hahahaha. -- I feel like the documentary gave too much screen time to this US lady. not sure why. the italian lady was far worse in my opinion because he took advantage of her grief. am sure there were tons of others women he also fooled. they could have balanced out the love scam more I feel. but then again, it is netflix and so they probably know their audience would find love scam more entertaining.
  4. who will wear blue? character 2. he wears a lot of blue already.
  5. okay ML is a total idiot. who tells a stranger on the phone that your possible grandmother is a rich old lady and you might be the long lost heir? isn't it more sensible to approach first, ask for DNA test before revealing the wealth and identity? he should have been thinking of the safety of the old lady before running his mouth. sheesh.
  6. I was planning to catch up on the drama but now I have lost all motivation. yikes! can understand if this is some historical accurate drama that was telling a slice of history about a political marriage. however, this is just a fantasy drama and the name of the drama is matchmakers. the theme is supposed to be good matches romantically. would audience accept such a pairing? what about broadcast authority??
  7. why on earth would he lose weight for this character?? and yes, I agree with you -- seo in gook and lee soo hyuk have the right visual looks. they have to look like they have the physical body to be menacing. here, ML looks too thin... 380
  8. true. I was talking to a relative uncle recently. he said that in his time, people were all so connected. they hardly had telephones and to pass a message, they would send a telegram or a letter. yet people made the effort to get to know one another and actually talk and spend time with one another. the irony is that we have technology today that we can talk to anyone anywhere and yet, we are more emotionally far apart and not as linked as communities. 384
  9. I remember one interview with taec (2PM), he said that JYP did something unique with his trainees. he actually made them all go through some sort of moral lessons along with their training that actually had pointers about relationships, handling fans and substances. initially, taec and the others thought it was hilarious and found it strange. but in later years, they came to appreciate the foresight of JYP -- they could see idols in other companies struggling with the weight of fame in personal life, slipping into bad relationships, addictions and depression. so JYP was interested in not just launching these groups but also making sure they were prepared for the rigours of stardom mentally as well as emotionally. he even made sure they understood finances and legal stuff so that they have an idea of how not to get ripped off. over the long run, these idols that came out of JYP entertainment seem to be so much more smarter and grounded about handling themselves. 380
  10. I feel the culprit everywhere is globalization. so music pretty much everywhere sounds the same. -- rather than taking inspiration and doing their own riff in whatever genre, people do very simple forgettable melodies. there is nothing interesting or complex about these songs musically. -- also, the singers themselves are forgettable. they are actually just average in terms of voice and don't have the real musical knowledge or talent. in my previous post, the singer I mentioned, SPB, was a true legend. he sang over 40,000 songs in 16 languages. he himself didn't know the exact number of songs he sang but his voice was unique and very layered. you could easily recognize any of the songs he sang. he could sing very complex music effortlessly and would convey emotion in his voice. you don't have those kind of singers often. -- the song I had shared is famous and still gets people emotional for the lyrics -- it is actually about a toxic relationship where one partner feels unappreciated, unloved and pretty much used and torn. even if you didn't understand the language, many would say that SPB conveys that feeling so well that you can immediately relate to the sadness and despair hidden within the song. so singers don't convey emotion in their voice today. there is neither fun or joy or sadness in their voice. very few singers put in emotional effort. it is just flat and instead the emotion is convey through synthetic instruments (not even live playing). -- for the most part, the lyrics are super bland and meaningless. they are not timeless in any fashion. in my parents generation, they used to have actual poems as lyrics for songs and very meaningful even now. even the songs I heard, the lyrics were good but there has been a gradual deterioration where the current songs have no meaning at all for the most part. like the movie 'music and lyrics' with hugh grant and drew barrymore note, a memorable song is not just about melody or harmony or lyrics or voice. it is about bringing together all these elements. I feel technology has made it too easy that people don't put in the kind of effort needed to make good music -- the stuff that lasts and you can remember. there are few songs here and there that are interesting but for the most part, the previous decades were better and more importantly, unique pretty much anywhere in the world. re: @kokodus +2
  11. hahahaha.... you used the right gif. actually while growing up, we didn't have much exposure to western music. I didn't even know what grammys were for a long time. the music scene here in the south was pretty much from the movies and they were running on a different genre altogether. it was a time of fusion between classical + folk inspired music, full orchestra and some synth beats added in. what is interesting to me is how western instruments such as saxophone, guitar and violin have been adapted that it sounds so different. the original singers who sang these songs are still respected because these are songs that are very difficult to sing -- a singer will be expected to hit both high and low notes within the same bar and even add trill. also, because these singers were playback singers -- as in you never saw them in the movie but just heard their voice playing -- they had a long shelf life (some sang for decades) and they didn't have the pressure of performing. only singing. some of these singers were supposed to be so good that they could record a full song in one take the first time and save the producer money. even now, most concerts are sit down affairs and people just sing along. so a performance would look pretty much chill like this unplugged version. this is instrumental cover of a really famous song (1994) known for its saxophone interlude. you often hear this song being attempted at competitions but it has tripped many participants because it is not easy. this was the original singer, SPB, singing in a tv programme (a competition for singers). the man had such a glorious voice and the way he could hold a note was so effortlessly beautiful. re: @kokodus +2
  12. reactions are really hysterical. you can just see their brains whirling but trying to be polite. and like you said, the older generation actually seemed to be enjoying it lots which makes it even more funnier. +2
  13. kekeke... brother has more evil charisma than ML 384
  14. 384 watching perfect marriage revenge and I think I have to agree with @partyon -- sung hoon is not looking handsome! sorry @confusedheart and @Ameera Ali. I figured out why -- it is because he is playing such a boring cardboard cutout of a ML. almost the equivalent of a daily FL with hardly any personality. just about everyone in his family as well as other characters in this drama have more depth and presence than this boring ML. so his handsomeness got reduced.
  15. watching ep 1 -- mom-in-law "if you are short of skill or time, that is what delivery is for" -- how right! what kind of moron cooks when she cannot? and she is doing her best? what to serve bad food? idiot! meanwhile all restaurant chefs thinking....
  16. how about embroidery? do you know how to do basic stitching? it is a super useful skill to have if you don't know. you never know when you might need to hem or stitch a button. I used to do embroidery as a child but forgot most of them. only thing I still know how to do is cross stitch or a long stitch which doesn't require any skill. I keep thinking of picking up a kit and maybe doing one -- has been a long long time.
  17. my slump continues more or less @partyon while many of the dramas simply do not catch my eye, real life stress means I am even more easily bored. so I decided that I need to watch dramas again in order to decrease my stress even if the dramas are not really that interesting. so after several months where I didn't watch dramas in any language, I have again picked up a few -- third marriage and matchmakers are the kdramas. they are okay so far.
  18. no. please don't watch gunther. the original gunther story is all sad. the rest of the gunther stories are lunatic things that people will do for money. if you want something sweet and nice, watch youtube videos that people upload about their pet cat/dog interacting with babies or whatever. that is more entertaining then gunther documentary on netflix -- couldn't even finish it was so boring. even aliens nonsense is more entertaining. +2
  19. yea she is supposed to the richest woman -- that is what they said at end of documentary. till the last moment, I was expecting some real makjang twist like affairs and some extra children popping up. instead, it was just some fella that sweet talked some lonely but really rich lady into giving him gifts. he didn't even need to have affair and he got paid holidays and lots of art just to hang out with her. sheesh. so boring. +2
  20. I saw it; wasn't that interesting to be honest. the title is more entertaining than the content. I kept waiting for some makjang gossip but it was boring tax stuff. re: @Ameera Ali @joccu 374
  21. exactly! serial killer oppas beards are all trim and tidy. so nope. +2
  22. my first thought was it was a spoof of the traditional Malay outfit? but then I don't think any fashion house would be stupid enough to offend cultural sensibilities. so maybe a really strange inspired version? who knows?! 388
  23. well, I live in a tropical country and the baby box are outdoors. there are bells nearby. actual bells that you ring (like in church) or a doorbell type button with a flashing light. then the staff come out to pick the baby. certain locations like hospitals, you can also physically drop off the baby and they can take in with no questions asked. based on documentaries I saw about baby boxes in korea and japan, it is covered and also warm. you have to ring the bell so staff know because they are not checking on the box every minute. one box had some sort of automatic bell ring -- think it was activated by some lever when the baby was placed. my question -- why didn't she ring the bell?
