  1. The first two eps really grabbed me!! I was pretty surprised (b/c I came in without watching any of the trailers or reading the synopsis.  I just came for Jeon Sonee haha) at how action-packed both ep1 and ep2 were.  I am sooo curious about Sargeant Han and his father though.  What is the underlying story there?  Are they actually loyal to the crown prince or are they just in it for themselves like all the other retainers?

  2. I think I may be sort of in the minority here, but I almost wish Mr Gu really was a former host, who was now one of the top dogs in a semi-legal organization.  If he really was a former National athlete, how wrong did his life have to go for him to end up working 15 or more years for Chairman Shin?  And where is his own family that he didn’t run to them?  That they never called him for a whole year after his girlfriend died?

I feel like there’s this interesting possible parallel to be drawn between Hyunah, Gijeong, and Mr Gu.  Of the three, Gijeong had been longing to live in Seoul, to find love in Seoul, and etc but never managed to succeed in living there and is stuck at home with her family in Sanpo.  But she has found the beginnings of happiness anyway.  While Hyunah’s words to Mijeong about the danger of moving away from home and going to the city, actually seem apply to both her and Mr Gu.  Like the loss of that connection to home, rather like those dogs in the empty field in Sanpo, might have been the root of his trouble.  Just like how with Hyunah she’s able to return to Sanpo but we don’t see her family or where she used to live.  Rather, we see her life in the city and how she’s had that long string of subpar boyfriends that don’t love her enough, or in the way that she should be loved.

So the question is, was that intentional? Did Gu want the dogs to be caught? Maybe he wanted to clear them away before he left so the Yeom family could be safer.

Or was the parasol Sanpo, where Gu could rest for a short while? But now he's trapped in a cage

I honestly think it’s both.  Mr Gu is seemingly both very clever and tough but also very sensitive.  All along Mr Gu’s warned Mijeong that he’s a dangerous person, and from the way the gang treated him before Mr Baek died and then at the funeral, that seems to be true.  And knowing that he was dangerous to Mijeong he couldn’t tolerate the idea of Mijeong still being in his life if he was going to go back to the gang, so he cut her out.  However, even though the dogs were dangerous he had a soft spot for them, and he had been trying to take care of them.  So I think he wanted to give them what he himself had had for a short while—a place to rest out of the wind—before he removed the danger they presented to Sanpo (and by extension Mijeong).

But he let Mr Yeom tell him what to do and teach him. Guess it was refreshing for Gu to be in that setting.

Lol I think part of the allure of Mijeong for Mr Gu was this too.  He made no secret of the fact that he was a hardas*, but still she’s stood up to him and demanded much of him all along.

  3. While I was impatiently waiting for ep11  to arrive, I was thinking about which character I’d love to see more of, and for me I think it was HyeonAh!  And so I was happy that we got to go back to her storyline in ep11.  So far, she and Mijeong and the rest of the siblings have such a good relationship with each other, but Mijeong is keeping HyeonAh and Mr Gu separate.  I mean, I know Mijeong’s excuse was that they’re too alike, but I wonder if there is something more to that.  It’s not as though Mijeong has been shy about what her relationship with Mr Gu is like… if anything, HyeonAh knows a lot just from listening to the siblings and Mijeong describe him.  I think rather it being a case of ‘like detests like’, HyeonAh and Mr Gu might understand each other quite well.

If there’s something more that I want now, it’s learning more about why HyeonAh makes the choices she does.  Is it really because she wants love that she compromises her happiness to stay with people who don’t treat her well?  And then also, now that we’ve had even more of Mr Gu’s backstory revealed, I’d like HyeonAh and him to meet.  Is she going to be able to tell that he is part of whatever shady organization earned him enough money to buy a RollsRoyce?  Or will she not be able to see through him like Mijeong can…

Mjs mom...does she not approve of gu and MJ?

Oooh that’s an interesting question.  I mean, she has been mother hen to the man since he started to work at Sanpo.  She and the whole family saw Mr Gu try to drink himself into an early grave all winter long.  If anything, she has to be super confused that this man on the verge of alcohol poisoning suddenly has enough energy to date her youngest daughter.  But also, she has praised him, to his face no less, for his skill and work ethic, so her opinion should be on the positive side.  Just like Mr Yeom, who’s all quietly supportive of Mijeong and Mr Gu being together.

I just wonder if their positive feelings about him will fade if his life as a gangster(?) impinges on Sanpo, which the preview for ep11 seems to show will happen really soon.  Or will the parents be as protective of him as Mijeong is?

I'm seriously picturing MJ as queen bee of that giant nightclub/gambling establishment/whatever-the-heck-it-is and being the enforcer mama. If anyone could handle being around a bunch of thuggish rogues, it would be her.

I want this so much hahaha.  Or if not this, then at least Mr Gu telling Mijeong exactly what it was he did to earn money before working at Sanpo and her having to really decide based on all the facts.  I feel like it would be hilarious because he’d end by saying “I told you I was a scary person” and she’d just shrug and not care.  Or it would open Pandora’s box and she’d started peppering him with questions, and he would go on another of his Face Journeys lol.  But! Given the vibe of the drama, it’d be angsty as hell…which I’m not opposed to lol

  5. I wonder if Gaon has told Suhyeon about him taking Yohan’s hand?  Even if he hasn’t, I’m sure Professor Min is going to recruit her to convince Gaon to come back, but will it work?

The funny thing to me about Suhyeon and Gaon’s relationship is that they are really terrible at stopping?  Her own chief says she can be overzealous sometimes, and Gaon is pretty much the same.  So if he’s really gone over to Yohan’s way of playing the game, and it isn’t a ruse, I can’t see it going well for Gaon or Yohan.  As much disruption that Gaon caused in Yohan’s life, I bet Suhyeon will be a thousand times more disruptive.  Part of me wonders if she is befriending Elijah not just because she’s a good person with really strong protective instincts, but also because she wants to have another person in the Kang mansion who might let her in, if Gaon refuses.

  6. Since the word devil is in the title of the show, I would like to play devil's advocate regarding Gaon and Yohan's relationship (Just for fun! Not trying to make anyone angry! I just really like the show and tearing apart character motivations and actor's choices)

Gaon rarely sleeping in his own home makes sense if you view it from the angle that he and Yohan are lowkey obsessed with each other.  Whether you ship it and want them to bang, whether you think it’s that Yohan and Gaon have found a chance for family in each other, whether you think they’re diametrically opposed philosophically and destined to kill each other-- it’s irrelevant.  Obsession is how Ji Sung and Jinyoung are playing it.

The constant invasion of physical spaces--Gaon roaming all over the Kang mansion, going directly into Yohan's bedroom like it's Gaon's bedroom instead, barging into his office at the court without knocking, asking questions of Yohan's niece and Yohan's nanny.

The constant invasion of personal space--Yohan has put his hands on his work subordinate too many times to recount and not all of them were violent responses to rude behavior from Gaon (and even if they were responses to rude behavior, slamming your new employee into a bookshelf for borrowing a book is not a typical response for a boss to have), so I'll just give a couple: the chin thing after Gaon apologizes for accusing him of fratricide, herding him both into the party and away from the quote "pack of lionesses" at the party in ep 4.

They both overstep the boundary line between strangers, between superior and subordinate, constantly.  And you have to wonder why.  My answer to why they act as they do is that a theme of the drama is: when does devotion turn into obsession?

Suhyeon is "devoted" to Gaon, to protecting him, even his own worst impulses.  But we haven't had a scene with her yet, where she isn't immediately jumping to help him with his every need.  I suppose you might argue that they're lifelong friends, almost family.  Which yes, makes sense.  But where is her life outside of Gaon?  Who are her other friends?  What are her other interests?  Maybe it's a fault in the writing, but I doubt it.  Gaon has his plants, his love for motorcycles.  What does Suhyeon have, other than him?

And Gaon, once his Professor Min gives him the role of spy, well, he's as single-minded about it as Suhyeon is about him.  And Yohan is the same.

Anyway, that was long, and I'll take off my devil horns now :)

  7. Hello~ first post on Soompi in a long time! But The Devil Judge brought me back :)

Is anyone else awestruck by how terribly similar Gaon, Sunah, and Yohan are?  I can’t say they’re mirror images of each other (no such thing as a three sided mirror lol), but they reflect back on one another.  Gaon and Sunah both have their own “moral code” that they live by.  Sunah’s is every woman for herself and devil take the hindmost.  While Gaon is the exact opposite with his self-sacrificing belief in the preservation of the system above his own needs.  And standing apart from them, is chaotic Yohan who lives by no code at all.  I have to wonder what another Gaon/Sunah encounter would look like.  Would she play the innocent again?  Or would Yohan even let the two of them meet?

Perhaps you’re right.  But I feel like she has not made a firm decision yet.  She is still wavering between fully embracing life with JinHyuk vs life without JinHyuk.  That’s why SooHyun cried so much in ep14, because she didn’t know what to do.  Her heart is telling her one thing, while her head is saying something else.

I've been spending my time reading 50 first pages of this thread. Strangely, after 30 pages i got to the point that i'm on board with this ship, wherever it may land. My worries have gone, and eventhough i came to the part where the story became so heartbreaking and some parts were unbearable to watch, i watched it with so much ease.

From the very start they've been stated this as melodrama.

...a heart wrenching romance, that turns both of their lives upside down.

...their worlds clash in a romantic, but sorrowful love story.

... it was like a midsummer night's dream.

So from the very beginning it was expected to have lots of angst. What i failed to predict is that i don't know that i'll be so invested to their love story. That Soo Hyun and Jin Hyuk are not just characters, they became alive, they are all of us. One has said, it hit too close to home.

I think now, I understand Soo Hyun so much better. She knew exactly that there will be so much angst, and a probable bitter ending by taking Jin Hyuk's hand, but she just can't resist his charm

Your comment was beautiful and I’m sorry to cut it, even though I also didn’t know I would become so strongly affected by these characters.  But what you said reminded me of what I said a lot of pages ago, when I still thought SooHyun was supposed to be the Little Prince.

I’m not sure of that theory now, but if she is, then you’re quite right!  She did know that taking JinHyuk’s hand would lead to joy and also sadness, just like the Little Prince knew that if he wanted to return home, he’d have to allow the snake to bite him.  (Which is a terrible decision to have to make.)

Similarly with SooHyun— she has alll this baggage.  Her mother and her goals and manipulative nature is baggage.  Her father is baggage.  Her ex husband is baggage.  TaeKyung is baggage.  To a certain degree, SooHyun’s position as Donghwa CEO is baggage too.

Everything that informed who she grew to be is baggage that weighs her down and prevents her from being “lightweight” enough to fly away home (meaning to JinHyuk).

So now at the end of the story, SooHyun has a decision to make.  Finally, after wandering in the desert does she want to let go of all her baggage, let the snake bite her and be free to return home (to the warm home she and JinHyuk could build together) or will she stay stranded and alone.

  10.  Earlier in the thread someone wrote that they were watching it mainly for the excellent execution of the story, and they were right.  Boyfriend is really well done, more unpredictable than most dramas that I watch, and both of these factors (plus the actors!) have combined to make me fall in love with the drama! So I agree with the many, many people that I can’t tag right now because I’m on mobile LOL, that a drama cute as this with a soundtrack as cute as this could never have a sad ending.

Seriously, this is a bop.  It's taken over the number 1 spot from the Saltnpaper song as my favorite OST.

I think SH's conversation with EX implied that she would let JH go after the perfect final date. Because like she said, the attitude and manner of breaking up are also important. I dont blame her for that. Because like what she said to EX, it must be hard and suffocating for her because she cant share with anyone. But on second note, she shared with the tea lady about JH mother visiting her. So let's cross finger that the tea lady will make some magic to help our OTP.

So first our JinSoo couple had a fairy godfather, now in the final moment the fairy godMother is revealed to be Teacher Lee.   let’s hope!!

Sweet mother of Mary it is!! That’s the lamplighter who lives in the tiniest planet. He is bound by duty to light and put out the lamp in his planet. Trouble is, his planet makes a complete turn every minute so he has to light and unlight the lamp twice in a minute.

He is a tired man but he can’t stop because those are his orders. In fact the Little Prince offered him a solution so he can rest (by walking three steps towards daylight all the time in his planet) but he refused because all he wanted to do in life was to sleep. The Little Prince loved that man because he was faithful to his orders. He also admired that the lamplighter thought of someone else besides himself.

The Little Prince wanted to stay to be his friend but his planet was so small and could not fit two people. He also loved that his planet had 1440 sunsets. And we all know how cathartic sunsets are for CSH

Oh my goodness! Is JH the lamplighter? Or is it CSH? Jiminy cricket!

I need a drink or some chocolates...take me with you @ahdrianaa

Thank you for writing all that out!! I couldn’t remember what the lamplighter’s storyline was!!

However I don’t believe JinHyuk or the SooHyun is the lamp lighter though.  I think this is whole Little Prince thing is a fakeout.  The whole story has been about subverting expectations and becoming more than the characters ever thought they could be.  Secretary Jang finding the good heart in a man without a fancy car or academic qualifications.  SooHyun opening herself up to the world.  SooHyun’s dad letting go of his political ambitions and happily deciding to dream a new dream.  I think we are supposed to take away that blindly following orders like the lamp lighter does is one way of expressing love and respect, but there are other ways.  Ways that might be better or lead to greater happiness

I’ve decided to try predicting what’s going to happen next.  Hold onto your hats:

At the end of their date, JinHyuk is going to give SooHyun the camera case gift.  SooHyun will accept it.  Then she’ll break up with him.  After it sinks in, she drives him, but instead of driving home, she takes him to the local city hall and she reveals that they’re going to to get married right then and there!

Then the last two episodes are SooHyun wrapping up the lawsuit and an extended montage of their honeymoon in Cuba.

    100% this will happen.  B)

Agreed on you for that feelings. She is the most kind and understanding in the three mothers in my point of view before but the most coward now. That's it! Because  a mother is always brave in terms of protecting children's happiness.:heartbreak:

Agreed with everything but the last point :)  I think a lot of mothers I’ve know would say a mother is always bravest when protecting their child’s life.  JinHyuk’s mom wants him to live safely, peacefully.  With no bad words spread about him, no jealous people asking for favors. And within that life, that safe life, she has had happiness and so she believes JinHyuk will have happiness too.  If she has to hurt him now and make him unhappy now, so that he can be safe, his mother is willing to do it.  Because in her own experience, happiness will come eventually.

Personally, I'm not sure I trust the writer that much. :sweatingbullets: There are some details in the earlier episodes that niggled at me, but I brushed them aside so I can enjoy the drama as a whole...

I think the writer has totally underplayed the effect this relationship has on JH and his family. In real life, if someone like JH dates someone like SH, his family would be hounded by reporters... Neighbours, friends and passerby would be whispering and pointing at not just him, but also his family.  I wouldn't be surprised if we see articles after articles digging dirt on JH and his family. But we didn't really see much of this. Going against the Taegyeong group has also shown minimal effect - I was expecting a lot worse. So taking this into consideration, JH's mother seems unreasonable. I sympathize with her feeling, but don't condone what she did behind his back.

Yeah... these two eps have made me put on my “suspicious viewer” goggles again.  Pretty much the only thing I trust a drama writer to do is break my little shipper heart.

But that said!  I do like that a theme of the drama is personal growth!  I’m not impressed with anyone’s communication skills in this drama other than JinHyuk’s dad, DaeChan, and Teacher Lee.  They say how they feel and are honest with themselves and other people.  Everybody else needs to take Communciation 101.   But the other characters are making steady improvements toward facing their demons and trying to conquer them.

Although I'm sad about SooHyun’s decision, she deserves some applause for how far she’s come from the Ice Princess persona that we saw at the beginning.  She’s shared her feelings with two people, and she would never have done that before.  She can see herself as being part of the world now, thanks in part to JinHyuk, and that’s something to celebrate.

Even WooSeok’s fake girlfriend got some closure for herself by telling SooHyun the truth! And that allowed SooHyun to close that door, finally.

The remaining characters that are need of personal growth are JinHyuk’s mom and the only one who can help her is JinHyuk himself.  I think he is refusing to acknowledge how much anger and fear his mom has about what’s happening.  Just as he ignored all the signs that his childhood best friend wanted more than friendship.  Luckily that didn’t blow up in his face, but this situation with his mother sure as heck has.  Hopefully, him resolving the situation with his mom will be the focus on the next episode.

KJH is a good son in Korean Family with close bonding, parents can hope for his good life and good wife after graduation and start working. In some Asian countries, parents raise their sons/daughters with love and best support ever; therefore, sometimes expectation and a certain involvement might be understanable.

Let KJH’s mom get more info and take some time to gradually make her mind.

She might not like CSH as her son’s girlfriend and hope for her son’s wife’s normality but she would accept her son’s choice one day from her love to the son and from her son’s love to CSH.

Even within my own culture, (which is not Asian) there is the expectation that you are supposed to value your parents opinion very highly.  Often tying to convince your parents to change their minds once they’ve made them up is like trying to force the wind to change direction.

For our JinSoo couple, I really believe that the best decision would be to continue with their relationship without JinHyuk’s mother's approval.  Regardless of what they do (stay together or break up) everyone knows of the connection between the Kim family and the Cha family now.  The awkward interactions, cruel commentary, and people asking favors won’t stop even if JinHyuk and SooHyun separate.  They’re linked now, so his mother may as well get out of the way and let her son be happy.  That way there can be a least one benefit to come out of all of the hardship.

What is JH’s mum thinking? Is she uncomfortable now that her family is thrust into the limelight? Is that her way of protecting her family? Is she jealous of SH and secretly hope for JH never to find true love?

The fact that she refused to talk to her son about SH spoke volumes. She probably knew how JH felt towards SH. She knew it would be a lost cause to try to convince JH to leave SH. Perhaps she is fearful of knowing how much JH loves SH.

I think when she said all that about how women should live quietly with their husbands and children, in the early episodes, JinHyuk's mother really meant what she said.  I had thought at the time that maybe she was making a subtle dig at her husband and feeling a little sad about lost opportunities for herself.  But apparently not!  (which is fine, for her, because that's her choice)

But to ignore her son's decision to not live with a woman who has those same beliefs isn't right.  He's an adult and he deserves the opportunity to make up his own mind.

This is why SooHyun and JinHyuk really need to work out their communication issues.  They never really talk about the bad stuff, they just hint around it, and find solutions to problems on their own.  Which I get-- you and your life partner should be whole people, not dependent on each other for every little thing.  But problems should be shared with your partner!  You're not supposed to suffer in silence and keep your pain to yourself.

  21. I'm super late to the party, but I wanted to list my wishes for the upcoming episodes.  They're in order starting from maximum nonsense to least:

    1) WooSeok to complete his take over of Donghwa and then donate all his shares too SooHyun so she becomes majority stakeholder by a landslide, for him to submit all the evidence of his mother's crimes(?) to the police, get her arrested and removed as chairwoman, and then for him to go live in the countryside as monk.

    2) SooHyun's dad give up the election, but then his party members support his nomination anyway.  Then once he wins the election, he divorces his wife so she never gets the chance to enter the Blue House.

    3) Secretary Jang to become CEO of Chan's Whelks and open franchises all over South Korea

    4) SooHyun to play cupid and tell SunJoo about Manager Nam's

    5) SooHyun to open an art gallery in the HongJae neighborhood, with JinHyuk as her PR manager.

    edit:

I also want a special episode where they tell the artists of the paintings!  I'm not a very good internet sherlock so I haven't been able to find any of the pieces, but some of them I think I'd want to buy lol.
