Girl’s Day’s Hyeri And Jang Ki Yong Confirmed For New Fantasy Drama

Previously, Girl’s Day’s Hyeri and Jang Ki Yong were in talks for a new drama together, and on December 3, it was revealed that both actors have confirmed to star in it!

Titled “Frightening Cohabitation” (literal title), the tvN drama is based on a webtoon about a female college student named Lee Dam who accidentally swallows the marble of a male gumiho (a mythological nine-tailed fox) named Shin Woo Yeo, who was close to achieving his goal of becoming human. If a human swallows the marble, they can only live for one year, and the marble will break, preventing the gumiho from becoming human. Thus, Shin Woo Yeo suggests living together to Lee Dam, beginning their unexpected romance.

Jang Ki Yong will take the role of Shin Woo Yeo, a gumiho with good looks, sturdy physique, good manners, and a sweet charm who has lived for 999 years. Following his recent projects “Search: WWW” and “Born Again,” viewers are highly anticipating Jang Ki Yong’s transformation in this upcoming drama.

Hyeri will be starring as Lee Dam, a college student who doesn’t hesitate to speak the truth. She is a firm, straightforward person who is very self-objective, which may be the reason she has never been in a relationship before. Previously, Hyeri impressed in dramas, such as “Reply 1988” and “Two Cops.”

This upcoming drama will be penned by writers Baek Sun Woo and Choi Bo Rim, who wrote the webtoon-turned-drama “What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim,” and helmed by director Nam Sung Woo, who produced “Kkondae Intern.”

The production team stated, “We are very happy to be bringing the popular webtoon ‘Frightening Cohabitation,’ which received many requests to be turned into a drama, to life. Jang Ki Yong and Hyeri have been cast for the lead roles. Expectations are high because they are very synchronized with the characters they’ll play. Please look forward to ‘Frightening Cohabitation.'”

The drama will air in 2021.

Thank you @mademoiselleisa, I read that Q&A with the writer some time ago, when I finished watching the drama, and I did understand a lot of things after reading that.

But I can't forgive her for not finishing the novel. It makes me sad.

Aww, I understand your disappointment. It will forever be a pity in my heart too. However it's been 8 years so I've come to terms with it. I hope you will too and forgive Song Ji Na.

Faith just wasn't popular enough at the time so with publishing the novels, it doesn't seem like the publishing company was able to make profit from it. At the time, we had contacted the publishing company and asked if there was a chance for this to be translated into another language and they said the other markets were not interested. Last I know, I was told the copyrights were sold to Indonesia and Japan.

If my memory serves me right, Song Ji Na published a bit of volume 3 and said she hit a writer's block. Then all we know was she moved on to write Healer.

On Sept 11th this year, the actor who played Daeman did a live chat on his IG. Someone posted liking him in Faith (in English). He didn't understand what "Faith" was so I wrote "Shin Eui" and he understood. He just said, "that was a long time ago" and left it at that and said nothing else. I admit as a Faith fan I'd love to see a bit more enthuasiam from him about it but he said no more. :(

    And then I thought, perhaps...

To us, Faith may give us many fond memories (and still is); however, it's probably not like that for the production crew & the actors because of what happened then—overworking staff, no money for wrap up party, staff not getting paid leading to the staff filing lawsuit against PD Kim and in the end PD Kim chose the suicide path. I can't helped but wonder these people, including Song Ji Na, may have preferred to put Faith away and not think/talk about it anymore because it brought back too many painful memories.

  3. PD Kim wanted Faith to be more Wuxia-like. Song Ji Na was not familiar with Wuxia but she tried to incorporate them into her script on PD Kim's bidding, which is why Ki Chul et al. and Choi Young have special powers in the beginning. The Wuxia bit went down the drain mainly, I believe, due to budget because PD Kim wasted a lot of money making a trailer featuring the original Choi Young, Kang Ji Hwan. In addition, Faith was also sued for plagiarism because there was another drama adapted from Japanese drama/mange named Dr. Jin which had a similar setting (time travelling), and this affected the script as well.

Also due to time constraint & budget, Song Ji Na's scripts were changed without being consulted. Which is why she decided to release the scripts on her then, website, for the Faith fans. If you are following the omitted script tidbits, you will notice as the series get nearer to the end, there were more translated scenes indicating more scenes were being omitted/changed.

Below should answer some questions and regrets for the production of Faith. From these Q&A, it is evident as well that the PD and Song Ji Na had different vision of how they wanted Faith to be.

Q: Was it your intention to introduce the villian’s image of Ki Chul as a person who is sick? The audience thought the potrayal of Ki Chul by Yoo Oh Sung is cute. Was that too, the reaction you intended?
A: Mmm…I often look at the politicians and thought the impression they gave me, instead of bad, I see them as people who are funnily sick. That’s the way I go about creating Ki Chul…but as a result, I panicked when he became a comic presence. At the beginning I thought it was the costume or one-on-one fighting scene weren’t good enough, but after some consideration, I think it is, I, who failed to properly create the character. This is a character that is overly greedy, yet immature.

Q: What is the reason of incorporating the power of sonic, fire, ice and nei-gong (internal ki) into the script? To be honest the arrangement of this became more of a hindrance to the drama and its story because only those who possesses this power can fight each other. Is there a special reason for this story-setting?
A: Ah…this setting is what the director wants long time ago. We bought a Wuxia novel and in the novel, there’s power of sonic, ice and fire to cure people – named “Medical Power”! Honestly, I don’t really understand the principle of it (and can’t accept it), it greatly burdened me, but because director wanted to and asked me to give it a try…so I started. But the medical part of the story has been cancelled, so the story to the “medical power” has also been cancelled. One vs One fighting with these kind of powers became impossible and difficult with the time constraint. A script writer should not write something s/he does not know about, with this, I regretted it a million times.

    Spoiler

Q: I don’t know if I should ask, but with regard to the scenes being omitted during filming due to time limit or condition, was it approved by you that it did not get filmed? Or did it get edited out? I really want to know…
A: It was quite difficult at the shooting, but the lateness of releasing my script was the major reason. In order to accommodate my script and digest it, it would require some changes to the set or shooting. Usually I would get a call on the spot if there’s a scene that is difficult to reproduce and in order to accommodate it, it would require some editing. (These changes are reflected in the script I upload onto my site)

As for changes that I was not aware of, I only knew it when it was shown on TV. (the script was uploaded onto the site before I could make any changes).

Q: In regard to the script for the ending, how much differences were there comparing with the original structure of the script? Were there some story that due to time constraint did not make it into the script?
A: The structure of the end was already set when I wrote episode 1 therefore when episode 1 was being filmed, I also requested to film some scenes of episode 24. However, it looks like it was not filmed (at the time they said they had no time, they will film it later).

Q: After receiving the scripts at the production set. Is there someone there that will help edit the scripts to which the filming condition required? If there is, did it receive your approval before it was edited?
A: When the story reaches the second half, the shooting condition becomes vicious. It seems impossible to film two 70 minutes long episodes in a week. Plus Faith is a historical drama, they often have to travel between filming locations, to not have any flaws and filmed till the end… I think it is an amazing thing (I suggest Kdrama should be aired one episode a week).

Thus it was impossible to have another person editing the scripts; there is no such time. My understanding is most of the time the director will make the judgment and finish the job. If there is time, assistant director will tell me the condition through live chat and request to edit the script. If there is none, they will just shoot it first and I only find out during the broadcast – “Eh? That scene is not there…?”

Q: Ki Chul was really scary in the earlier part of the drama, however, as the story unravels, his character became more comical. Is that what you intended it for this character?
A: Oh no, definitely not. To be honest when I first saw the 4 of them on TV broadcast, I was shocked! I tried with great effort to fix it…but I think in the end I got consumed into it…

The rest of the Q&A can be read → https://shineuifaith.wordpress.com/2020/08/08/writer-song-ji-nas-qa/

Joonni also translated them and more, so that's another read if anyone wants to better understand Faith and the production.

  4. [News] 2020.10.22 Kim Min Jae Talks About Playing The Piano For “Do You Like Brahms?,” Depending On Park Eun Bin, And More

    Ek1yKylVoAAxQtC?format=jpg&name=medium

Kim Min Jae looked back on his experience acting in “Do You Like Brahms?” through an interview on October 21, following the show’s finale the day before.

The drama is a romance about classical musicians who are torn between their dream and the harshness of reality as they pursue their love of music. The actor took on his first leading role with this show, playing the role of world-renowned pianist Park Joon Young.

“When I first saw the script, I found it refreshing that there were such turbulent emotions within the calmness,” he said, explaining why he chose to join the drama. “The character Joon Young is a world class pianist but he’s very shy, which I found charming. I also thought it would be fun to do a romance.”

He went on to talk about playing the role of a pianist. “There was a lot of pressure,” he said. “It’s hard enough to just play piano, but I felt a lot of pressure about acting as a pianist who wins competitions. I became good at playing the songs I played.”

When asked to name the songs that he remembers the most, he said, “I remember Rachmaninoff and ‘Moonlight Sonata+Happy Birthday’ too. ‘Träumerei’ is unforgettable. That’s the one that I practiced for the longest and I played it a lot.”

“I watched a lot of videos of Cho Seong Jin and of foreign pianists too. I put aspects of them together to create my character,” he said. “To be honest, I wasn’t very familiar with classical music, so I searched for and watched a lot of things. Joon Young is what came out of all of that.”

On the topic of his favorite songs in the show, he named “Träumerei” and also Schumann’s “Widmung.” He added, “I actually liked all the songs in the drama; there are none that I would leave out. I think I listen to ‘Widmung’ the most lately.”

    Ek1yKyoUUAE1VFY?format=jpg&name=medium

Kim Min Jae went on to share, “There was zero time to practice for the graduation recital in the latter half of the show. There was a part that I couldn’t play myself, so there was a moment where I had to just match the movements. I felt ashamed at first. There were several moments like that where I felt embarrassed. I never made an error while playing the piano that made us start the scene again, but there were times when I wasn’t satisfied with it so we did a few more takes.”

The actor not only had to play the piano, he also had to completely pull off the character of a master pianist. “To be honest, it was really hard to decide what kind of expression I should have and what gestures I should do,” he said. “Joon Young wasn’t inspired by any real person so I had to create someone new, and I wasn’t sure how to do that. It was difficult, but at some point I ended up just doing it like that. I created him after asking my teacher a lot of questions too and doing research.”

“I’m not sure if I’ve changed or if it’s just temporary, but I talk less after playing Joon Young,” he also said. “I think I’ve become a bit quieter and calmer. I need to shake that off soon.”

Kim Min Jae also spoke about acting alongside Park Eun Bin, who debuted at a young age as a child actress. Kim Min Jae said, “I depended a lot on Park Eun Bin, who made her acting debut around the time that I was born. She looks gentle but she’s tough in spirit, and she’s a strong person. It was great to work with her because of the depth she brings and her seriousness about her work, and I depended on her as a senior actor, a colleague, and a partner. I asked her a lot of questions about how to deal with difficult scenes I was feeling pressure about, and she always came back with great answers.”

He went on to say, “There was a scene where I had to express my emotions to my mother. I was feeling physically exhausted and I felt worried and pressured over the thought of having to cry in such a sad scene. I shared my concerns and she said, ‘You don’t necessarily need to cry. It will be harder to cry if you’re thinking about how you can’t cry.’ That made a big impact on me and I think I ended up doing well in the end.”

Kim Min Jae also spoke about how he gained confidence and courage while working on “Do You Like Brahms?” He shared, “I felt love from a lot of fans during this drama. Also, the cast’s teamwork and the relationship with the production team was great too. All of those aspects coming together gave me courage and confidence while working on this project.” He went on to share that he hopes that the drama gives people comfort, just like he was able to feel comforted by the show’s message while filming.

    Ek1ykiHU8AImwlz?format=jpg&name=large

“I want to become an actor that people choose to watch because they trust me,” he said. “I hope to become the kind of actor that will touch people’s hearts to the point that they’ll say, ‘Kim Min Jae’s in this. If Kim Min Jae’s in it, then I’d better watch it.'”

“I want to try a lot of different things,” the actor said. “I’m planning on practicing the piano and exercising a lot too, because in order to be in another project I have to experience many new things and grow as a person too.” He added that the drama made him want to keep up his piano playing and that once the COVID-19 pandemic is over, he’d like to play for fans with a performance at a fan meeting.

2020.10.19 Kim Min Jae Talks About Personally Playing Piano For “Do You Like Brahms?,” His Experience As An Idol Trainee, And More

    4536b4d7-8489-4082-8eeb-d971f9515d37.jpg

Kim Min Jae recently worked with Esquire for a photo shoot and interview!

Currently, Kim Min Jae is starring in the drama “Do You Like Brahms?” as world-renowned pianist Park Joon Young. Although the drama tells a love story, it focuses particularly on the hopes, dreams, and subsequent hardships of classical music students in their twenties.

Kim Min Jae shared, “I am so thankful for the love the drama is receiving, but at the same time, it seems like there are that many more people who relate to [the hardships of] Song Ah and Joon Young so it’s upsetting. At first glance, the drama can appear a bit frustrating but I honestly think we’re all living like them to some extent. That’s the reason why I chose to appear in this project.”

In his role, Kim Min Jae personally plays the piano. He spoke about the difficulties of doing so, sharing, “Before we started filming, it was tight because I only had a month to prepare. But because the emotions are completely different if I’m personally playing, I worked really hard. However, the songs in the latter half are extremely difficult so I am preparing but I honestly don’t know what will happen. I do want to do it myself though because the expression is completely different.”

He spoke more in more detail about this difference, explaining, “The depth is completely different.” His character also wishes Park Ji Hyun‘s character Lee Jung Kyung a happy birthday every year by playing her Robert Schumann’s “Träumerei.” Kim Min Jae spoke about the emotions tied to this, saying, “‘Träumerei’ is different because it’s the song I’ve played the longest, as I’ve practiced it from the very beginning. When I’m playing, there are times where I think, ‘Wow, I am really focused on this project.'”

    EkqLh5EVcAAZWMH?format=jpg&name=medium

The 23-year-old actor also discussed the four years he spent training to become an idol. During that time, he lived in a single room semi-basement with six other people. Kim Min Jae shared, “I don’t know if every agency at the time was like that too, but we had an extremely hard time. Back then, I don’t think I complained once. I just worked hard because I wanted to do well. As time has passed, I think, ‘That was really the worst.’ I just think stuff like, ‘I didn’t have to live like that,’ and ‘It wasn’t good.'”

In KBS’s “The Best Hit,” Kim Min Jae plays Lee Ji Hoon, who has been an idol trainee for three years. When asked how he approached that role given his experience, Kim Min Jae responded, “There were definitely some aspects that I knew firsthand. In my situation, I didn’t quit because someone wouldn’t let me [debut], but there were a lot of things I endured throughout my four years of training. It was a time where I would experience failure and awful scenarios on a weekly basis.”

He continued, “Not just for Ji Hoon, but for any project, I think I try to originate the character from myself. I met Ji Hoon through myself and I met Joon Young through myself. Although I know [Ji Hoon’s] emotions, I honestly feel like I’ve experienced the type of emotions Joon Young feels too. I agreed to both projects because I felt their emotions and thought that I could express them well. One person does not just experience one emotion.”

Kim Min Jae talked about what he puts most effort into these days, revealing, “Recently, I’ve been working on maintaining my mental health. I want to make my mind and body happy and maintain that. I think I had the toughest time when that wasn’t working out. When someone is depressed and they don’t feel good, they can’t experience happiness no matter what they do. I believe taking care of and maintaining this health is the root of all good work.”

Although he’s focusing on his acting career now, Kim Min Jae has discussed on numerous occasions his desire to venture further into music. He’s mentioned that if possible, he wants to do both, but cannot because he’s overwhelmed with his promotions as an actor.

When asked whether he still feels the same way, Kim Min Jae answered, “Yes, I think it’s the same. I really love music and dancing, but it’s hard to do other things when I’m filming. I also think there would be great synergy for actors to participate in the production of OSTs. I don’t know when it would happen but if I’m given the chance, I’m confident I’d be able to do well.”

I read that  most K-actors do their own stunt - did LMH does all the fightings and jumping in Faith?

He didn't do all of them. Some are too difficult, like the one jumping high into the air and kicking two opponents at the same time was not LMH. You can take a closer look in ep15 when he fights against his Woodalchi men. The guy in the middle was Daejang but as you can see from the picture, that's clearly not him in this shot.
