  2. What to Expect from Kim Seon-ho’s Next: ‘The Childe’

    Kim Seon-ho will play a mysterious nobleman in the movie, which marks his big-screen debut and his comeback after ‘Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha’

    spacer.png
    Kim Seon-ho will star as the titular Gwigongja (Nobleman) in 'The Childe.' The movie poster is on the left. On the right, Kim plays Hong Du-sik, a handyman known as Chief Hong around the village of Gongjin. Photo courtesy of HanCinema; tvN

    Originally titled Sad Tropics, Park Hoon-jung’s next, The Childe, will be released this June. The Korean action-noir thriller concerns a struggling boxer—with a Korean father and a Filipino mother—who is being watched and pursued by unknown, vile individuals while visiting Korea in search of his father.

    Kim Seon-ho will star as the titular Gwigongja (Nobleman) in the movie, which marks his big-screen debut and his comeback to the scene after his last, the superhit romantic comedy slice-of-life cathartic K-drama Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha (2021).

    Kim’s significant stage experience contributes to his incredible authenticity; he is a rare actor who brings composure and polish to every situation. He seems natural and instinctual, even in a challenging role, and was rightfully named Gallup Korea’s Television Actor of the Year for 2021. With The Childe, he certainly returns to the spotlight, ramping up his game.

    Based on reports, Kim’s character in the picture has qualities that are the antithesis of what we’ve come to expect from him from his previous efforts. The poster has already piqued my interest. What else have we got to look forward to? Read on.

    An All-New Kim Seon-ho

    Kim has an extraordinary capacity to hold your attention, given that he portrays characters who are fascinating to learn about. Keeping in line with this, as the nobleman in The Childe, his presence is cloaked in mystery. Nothing is known about what motivates him to pursue Marco (the boxer, played by Kang Tae-joo).

    The movie poster adds to Kim’s enigma with his silhouette, sporting a dapper gentleman’s appearance. He carries a marked swag while whistling and fixating on something against a dark blue skyline. The actor appears to be a dubious guy on the surface, and from what little is known about him, he will undoubtedly catch us off guard, though, just when we least expect it. I am most interested in the equation involving Marco, him, and whatever lies beneath.

    A Distinctive Action-Noir Film

    Filmmaker and screenwriter Park Hoon-jung supposedly have a soft spot for crime dramas and noir films. His creative talent is evident in his eye for quality, and his penchant for originality is unmistakable. Park, a revered name in Chungmuro, gained notoriety for penning the screenplays for Kim Jee-woon’s I Saw the Devil (2010) and Ryoo Seung-wan’s The Unjust (2010). He achieved both critical and commercial success with his first two films, the historical saga The Showdown from 2011 and the gangster epic New World from 2013. The 77th Venice International Film Festival hosted the global premiere of his most recent criminal drama, Night in Paradise (2020), which received plaudits for its use of unconventional characters in an impressively intricate plot.

    To all intents and purposes, with The Childe, Park will demonstrate a meticulously constructed plot with his signature high-caliber production standards and fluid storytelling. The film’s primary characters, some of whom are more morally questionable and flawed than normal, could correspond to the Korean noir film genre, but Park’s distinctive approach to portraying them might make them more intriguing. And even though The Childe seems bleak, you might still wish to explore the soiled roads of darkness that the director is expected to create with originality and style.

    An Interesting Cast

    In equal measure, the movie’s cast is noteworthy. It heralds the gorgeous Go Ara’s return from a protracted absence. Together with Kim Kang-woo, who is most known for his appearances in the erotic thriller film The Taste of Money (2012) and the police procedural thriller mystery action television series, The Missing (2015). Kang Tae-joo in the pivotal role of Marco will certainly be a revelation. Considering it’s an action-noir, can I anticipate a glimmer of romance between Kim Seon-ho and Go Ara? Let’s wait and see.

  3. @backstreetboysfan, thank you for the updates...
    If I had to choose one of the Drama, I would choose the modern Drama over the historical Drama too.

    Below is another article about it.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Kim Seon Ho Declines "Haesi's Shinru", In Talks To Return With The K-Drama "Into the Dead"
    Kim Seon Ho carefully chooses his next K-drama.
    On March 16, Kim Seon Ho's agency SALT Entertainment announced that the actor has decided to not star in the upcoming K-drama Haesi's Shinru
    Back in October 2022, Kim Seon Ho was positively considering returning to the drama scene with Haesi's Shinru. The agency revealed that after discussing it with the production company of the said K-drama, they have decided to decline the offer.
    Haesi's Shinru is a historical romance drama that takes place during King Sejong's reign in the Joseon era. It tells the story of Crown Prince Lee Hyang - a genius scientist who loved gazing at stars - and Hae Ru - a mysterious woman who sees the future. Kim Seon Ho was on the cast list for the role of the genius scientist Crown Prince Lee Hyang but ultimately decided not to appear.
    spacer.png
    However, Kim Seon Ho's fans will be able to see him in an upcoming action-thriller alongside Cha Seung Won and Kim Kang Woo. He is currently filming for the movie Tyrant, directed by Park Hoon Jung. . The actor is also on tour for Kim Seon Ho's 'One, Two, Three, Smile' 2023 Fan Meeting.
    Tyrant is a story about a group of people chasing the last sample of the Tyrant Program, which was lost in a delivery accident. On the trial of the sample are three men - a former agent Lim Sang (Cha Seung Won), tasked with the duty to execute people associated with the Tyrant Program; the bureau director of a government agency Choi Gook Jang (Kim Seon Ho), operating the Tyrant Program unofficially; and Paul (Kim Kang Woo), a foreign intelligence agency agent who aims to rid the last sample of the Tyrant Program.
    The movie is expected to premiere sometime in 2023 or early 2024.
    The Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha actor also took up another K-drama titled Into the Dead (working title) as his next project. Into the Dead is expected to be an 8-episode series that follows the story of a sister digging into the death of her younger brother. Director Kim Jee Woon of the movie I Saw the Devil and director Park Bo Ram of Through the Darkness will direct the film. More news is yet to come about the K-drama's release.
    Stay tuned for further updates!
  4. Actor You Need to Know: Kim Seon-ho
    After a year-long hiatus, the actor’s exceptional artistic creativity will re-emerge onscreen with his upcoming action-noir thriller movie, ‘The Childe’
    Spoiler
    spacer.png
    Kim Seon-ho plays Hong Du-sik in 'Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha.' Photo courtesy of tvN
    The ‘Kim Seon-ho effect’: what is it? I questioned a Korean PR professional I know. He has long been involved in the K-drama industry and has collaborated with many different Korean artists. “Kim is the epitome of a really good man! He truly is a gentleman! Perhaps he has that effect on people,” he said, adding, “The actor connects with his smile. He has a smile worth a million dollars! The Seon-ho effect you’re talking about, though, is attributable to some of Kim’s brand endorsements, which broke sales records a few years ago and fueled his explosive ascent to fame.”
    In the literal sense, that is accurate: Kim Seo-ho enjoys enormous fame (although he is often seen as a late-blooming actor). He has steadily advanced in his career over time, cementing his identity as a leading Korean actor and showcasing how much his followers and fans love him. I admire the guy for his brilliant performances even though I’m not a part of his fandom, called ‘Seonhohada.’ Kim is an expert at expressing and displaying the different facets that make up his characters and encompassing the entirety of their experiences.
    Reportedly an introvert since childhood, Kim was raised in Seoul’s Bongcheon-dong neighborhood. After high school, he enrolled at the Seoul Institute of the Arts, where he specialized in broadcasting and entertainment and received a degree. To add to his curriculum, he joined the university’s theater group. His tryst with acting thus began long before he became a successful actor at a professional level. In a prior interview with Dazed Korea, Kim stated that his urge to act is still as strong as ever. Every time he goes onstage, the desire to learn more about acting keeps running through his thoughts.
    It stands to reason that Kim’s filmography is a proven track record of his theatrical endeavors, which began after his conscription in 2007 and span from 2009 to 2016, before he made his television debut. The actor dabbled in a variety of roles during this period, whether it was playing Dr. Watson in the Korean production of William Gillette’s play Sherlock Holmes, the protagonist in the play Words I Couldn’t Say for 7 Years or a triple role in the play Rooftop House Cat’s 10th season. He was also chosen for a second titular role in the play Purpose of Love in 2015.
    Later on, Kim expanded his roster by embodying grittier characters. Together with Lee Hyun-wook and Moon Sung-il, he played Austin in Sam Shephard’s famed Korean remake of True West. That same year, he performed Valentin in the Korean stage adaptation of Manuel Puig’s Kiss of the Spider Woman. Now dubbed ‘Theater Idol,’ Kim landed a role in Almost, Maine in 2016 and has since appeared in a number of other plays to date, most notably in the well-known Closer by Patrick Marber, where he shared the stage with Bae Seong-woo, Kim So-jin and Park So-dam, earning praise from critics for his onstage ferocity.
    According to experts, Kim’s renown stems from the fact that he improvises his performances through minute details. When he made his debut in the office drama Good Manager in 2017, he made this abundantly clear once more. A major role followed in the next drama, Strongest Deliveryman, and another in which the 36-year-old co-starred with Jo Jung-suk as a crafty conman in the action comedy Two Cops, earning accolades at the 2017 MBC Drama Awards. In addition to a pivotal role in the smash-hit period drama 100 Days My Prince, he played a painter in the 2018 drama You Drive Me Crazy, which went on to become one of the highest-rated shows in Korean cable television history.
    I first encountered the actor in Welcome to Waikiki 2 and fell in love with him right away. In the 2019 sitcom, he portrayed the aspiring musician Cha Woo-sik. Artists who make a good first impression may become pinned to your expectations regarding their abilities. When it comes to that, Kim has never disappointed me. After starring as a cop in the gripping crime drama Catch the Ghost (2019), he joined the cast of the fourth season of the reality series 2 Days & 1 Night. Being a natural at revealing his true self, his everyday habits, and the real person he is off-camera, the star won the Rookie Award at the 2020 KBS Entertainment Awards for his effortless performance on the episodes.
    Since he depicts his characters in enthralling ways, Kim has a remarkable talent for moving you. Consider his depiction of Han Ji-pyeong, a start-up investor with a painful history, in the slice-of-life romantic drama Start-Up (2020). While watching the series, I couldn’t take my eyes off him and realized that he could play any role with genuine expertise. According to Korean media, while the series aired, Kim topped the monthly brand reputation ranking index by the Korean Business Research Institute and experienced a surge in popularity both domestically and abroad.
    He had a standout performance as Hong Du-sik (locally addressed as 홍반장, Caption Hong in English), an all-around handyman in the coastal village of Gongjin but technically jobless, in the cathartic romantic comedy Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha (2021), co-starring with Shin Min-a. One of the highest-rated television series in Korean cable television history, the show acquired unprecedented popularity, amassing enormous audience ratings. Kim quickly rose to become one of my favorite romantic heroes as a result, and Captain Hong is still one of my favorite K-drama characters.
    Spoiler
    Kim Seon-ho is incredibly authentic thanks to his extensive theater experience. This man, in my opinion, is a gem of an actor who adds poise and polish to any scene. Even in a complex part, he appears effortless and instinctive. Every word he says and every expression he wears is a treat to behold. And I’m sure anyone who’s come across him is well aware of his attributes. It’s no surprise, therefore, that he was titled Gallup Korea’s Television Actor of the Year for 2021.
    Sadly, an artist of his caliber missed out on several projects in the later part of that year when he received criticism over a personal matter. Consequently, he took a year off, even though everything eventually subsided. Fortunately, Kim is returning with The Childe, an upcoming Korean action-noir thriller film (originally named Sad Tropics) directed by Park Hoon-jung. The narrative’s protagonist is a struggling boxer who travels to Korea in search of his father, where he’s spied on and chased by mysterious, nefarious men. The movie, which may be released this year, will star Kim in the leading role.
    I can’t wait to watch the actor’s artistic creativity re-emerge onscreen. His acting feels inextricably linked to his charm and sensitivity, so I know he’ll stun us yet again.
  8. Namgoong Min, Kim Ji Eun, And More Share Gratitude For “One Dollar Lawyer” In Sweet Closing Comments
    Only portions related to Namgoong Min below.
    dummy.jpeg?s=900x600&e=t
    The lead stars of “One Dollar Lawyer” have expressed their admiration for the drama in their closing comments!
    SBS’s “One Dollar Lawyer” stars Namgoong Min as Cheon Ji Hoon, a lawyer who only charges an attorney’s fee of 1,000 won (approximately $0.72) despite his renowned skills. A hero who comes to the rescue of clients without money or connections, Cheon Ji Hoon isn’t afraid of facing off against the rich and powerful who use expensive lawyers to escape the law.
    On November 11, the SBS drama aired its final episode and the five main cast members of “One Dollar Lawyer” shared their farewell comments.
    In his lead role as Cheon Ji Hoon, Namgoong Min solidified his title as “the trustworthy Namgoong.” He commented, “To me, ‘One Dollar Lawyer’ is a project that’s like growing pains. I felt a lot while filming and felt a sense of responsibility for this project, so it was created while director Kim Jae Hyun and I relied on each other until the end. I also feel so grateful for my colleagues who trusted me and came running in an instant.”
    spacer.png
    He added, “In my spot, I am always silently thinking, ‘What can I do to showcase even better acting? What can I do to show an even greater project?’ and moving forward, little by little.”
  11. "One Dollar Lawyer" Continues to Baffle With Its Acclaimed Yet Shortened Run
    spacer.png
    Despite having star Namkoong Min in the leading role, "One Dollar Lawyer" faced an uphill battle for ratings. Its timeslot predecessor "Today's Webtoon" closed with ratings of only 1.6%. yet "One Dollar Lawyer" quickly established itself as the major hit of South Korean weekends, opening with 8.1% ratings and a high point of 15% ratings in its eighth episode. The most recent episode, the eleventh, had 13.6% ratings on November 5th.
    Yet despite "One Dollar Lawyer" seeming like a huge success for SBS, behavior from the network has been less than excited. "One Dollar Lawyer" has not aired for the past three Fridays, abruptly transitioning into a drama that only airs a single episode a week. From an original episode run of sixteen episodes, "One Dollar Lawyer" was reduced to fourteen, and then more recently to twelve episodes, its final episode now airing this week.
    South Korean television dramas have had their production runs shortened before, but generally speaking this only happens to shows that are unpopular. If anything, a person would expect that "One Dollar Lawyer" would receive more episodes, or even talk of a second season. Yet despite the drama's undeniable popularity, fans are instead now expecting to be left with a truncated version of the main story.
    Moreover, despite promises of a speedy, satisfying resolution, fans have been frustrated by directoral choices which act like "One Dollar Lawyer" has time to spare. An obvious product placement scene where Namkoong Min prepares mixed coffee, for example, is amusing enough thanks to the actor's charisma. But filler material such as this is quite frustrating for fans expecting a satisfying payoff to the story's many unresolved threads.
    It remains entirely unclear what behind-the-scenes event has prompted these baffling production decisions. Insiders close to the production claim that the situation isn't as scandalous as fans are assuming, and implied that the full story may be revealed once the drama has been finished. But whatever the explanation, "One Dollar Lawyer" will likely stand as a testament to wasted potential.
