  1. I really cant believe how these moms are pushing their kids. Is it really that hard to get into college in Korea? Are there not enough universities that the competition is so high? We also have study places like Kumon here, but I never sent my son there. I never pressured him. He graduated magna cum laude from high school and has straight A's in college. He got into a very competitive Nursing program that only takes in 60 students (out of 700+ applicants) for every cohort. He enjoys his time playing games online with his friends, goes out with them sometimes til late at night, goes on dates with his GF and works part time to get extra spending money. He still excels while doing all these. I think pressuring these kids stresses them out and it backfires.

These mothers are not doing it right. The lawyer mom doesnt show any love or any affection for her two boys, she just pressures them until they break. She didnt even learn her lesson with her older son, she now has to do the same to her younger son. Su-ah's mom is such a pathetic mom. She resorts to gossip, defamation, etc. to give advantage to her daughter. Her daughter who is now going crazy because she doesnt place 1st all the time. The other moms go along with her because they are afraid of her influence with the schools and online. She is so busy manipulating her kid, the mothers and the schools that she doesnt even know her husband is having an affair.

Of course we want our kids to succeed, but I think they are doing it the wrong way. They need to shower them with love and understanding. They need to support them 100% even when they fail. So they will feel reassured that it is ok to fail because life is not perfect. You learn from your failures and there is always a second chance. All that matters is that they are healthy. Forcing them will cause them to get sick and eventually not succeed the way they wanted.

Sorry, ranting because it irks me when I see these kind of moms.

  2. a few thoughts ...

when MJ said she wanted to hold a 1 year old Gu, i think that was her telling him that she wants to protect him like a mother will protect her 1 year old child.

When Gu left and saw the dogs being caught and caged, it was like him. He is returning to his cage and will now lose his freedom just like the dogs. I am just glad that even though they are in a gang like setting, they do not sell drugs. I think in Korea most clubs are operated by gangs ... based on dramas and news.

i love how the dad has fully accepted Gu. I think he has seen that Gu is a hard working man and only drinks at night because he has a lot of thinking to do. Even though he drinks, he does not sleep late or use a hangover as an excuse not to work.  The dad has never cared about money so he accepted Gu as he is, judged him by his actions.

That car, I was wondering if it will get into any accidents or vandalism. You dont really park a car like that in the places that CH goes to. At least he got some peace and experience driving an expensive car like that. I hope he still dates that girl.

Sometimes I cringed at GJ, but I like the way she is now a considerate woman towards her crush (forgot his name).  I also like how the writer wrote the daughter's character. She will give way as long as her dad is happy. As long as GJ understands her dad and appreciates him despite his flaws, she will forgive and accept GJ.

Despite the 3 siblings complaining about living at home and commuting so far, they still stayed at home. I wonder if they give money to their parents for living expenses? If not, they should have enough savings to move out, but I guess having money in your savings and the amount you make is different. The cost of living is too high to live by yourself.

I just found out in today's episode that MJ is a temp. I think that manager either likes her or jealous of her talent that is why he is always on her case. I laughed when Gu picked up MJ and he asked if that manager is on his way out as well. I think Gu wants to give him a lesson.

  3. I have not been on SOOMPI for a loooong time, but I like this drama so much. It's so different from your regular rom-com.

Anyways, has anyone noticed that the dad seems to approve of Gu despite not knowing who he really is? He was telling Gu that the cabinet business can bring in good money, which is like saying if Gu stays and marry MJ, he can take over the cabinet business and live comfortably.

  4. first time posting here ... I was in such a shock seeing the head nurse in the end ... but then i realized, it could not be the mom because how can she survive being thrown in the water and with all the blood lost?

if the head nurse is MY's aunt, maybe she stayed close to the father to find out what happened to her sister. i think maybe the father just said she disappeared.

i was puzzled by the title of this episode as well, but if head nurse is MY's mom's sister then it is fitting.

so she got her confession from MY dad so that should be the end of her revenge, especially since the dad said MY has nothing to do with it ... unless she is as crazy as her sister (judging by the way she was acting at the end) ... maybe they were twins? How did she get that butterfly pin? Maybe both of them has the same pin? so she drew that butterfly on the wall.

i was also puzzled by the "psyche" referrals... i think maybe since MY mom is a writer, she is well versed and the doctor is ... well a doctor who should know about these stuff. ... but then again, why warn GT not to trust anyone?

3 more episodes to go ...

Song Hye Kyo as CHA SOO HYUN

" I seem to have everything"

A divorced mother who comes from a wealthy family.

She was forced into an arranged marriage by her mother, who sacrificed Cha Soo Hyun’s happiness for her husband’s career.

However, Cha Soo Hyun’s wealthy husband soon leaves her and their child.

First of all, I just want to point out the character description for CSH on the first page. I watched the first two episodes and I did not see CSH as having a child that is why I was confused with the character description of her being a divorced mother.

Secondly, I was skeptical at first regarding this drama. I love SHK, and I think PBG is cute, but I did not think they will look good together. I did not want to see SHK as a "cougar" and PBG is just too boyish looking, plus I did not like his hair in Cuba (I am glad he got a haircut before he started working at the company), but the directing, writing and acting skills changed my mind. I find myself laughing and giggling at both of their antics during the first two episodes and really enjoyed the drama.

I look forward to future episodes.

  6. anyeong haseyo chinggus ... wow it has been a while since I was here. Too much things going on, holidays with relatives visiting, work restructuring, HS basketball season ... I can barely catch up with the dramas, but I always make sure to watch GOBLIN.

There is so much reactions from the last episodes but can you chinggus let me rant about Korea's security system for now? What the heck? How can someone getting a hold of your bank book take your money??? Dont they check for identity? How can someone, as long as they are related to you, take your home deposit???  What is so secure about those stamps they use as signature? Cant someone have a duplicate created and just use it any time? Do they even verify fingerprint stamps if it did belong to the right person??? In the US, not everyone is fingerprinted. Only criminals and people who are required to hold a highly secured position. Most of those finger print stamps we see in the dramas that was forcibly taken are not even valid because they are always smudged!

OMG now that ET's relatives are out, they are after her money again! ... with Korea's security system, all they have to do is find the damn bank book and they will get all her money! If she was in the US, the safest place for her to hide it is in a bank vault, but apparently in Korea, the safest place is in some locker, albeit at a train/bus station or in school. *sigh* ... no wonder a lot of asians in the US gets their home robbed because most of them dont trust banks and keeps cash in their homes. It is, more often than not, an inside job. People around the victims knew what they were looking for.

OK that ends my rant about Korea's security system.... Will have to write a better post about the drama ... later chinggus

I thought it was the king's son-in-law who was not allowed any political position. This I got from Jang Hyuk's Empire of Lust/The Age of Innocence. Our sweet Kang Ha Neul was the sadist son-in-law.

In Moon embracing the sun, the princess was married to a high ranking scholar official. So no political position like you said.

ahhhhh you were right chinggu. I must have confused the queen and the princess. thanks!

promotional material clears it up.. plus the fact that queen was killed when order was to kill KS's family..

    Queen is KS's sister

I am not sure exactly what it is, but isnt there a law that the queen's brother cannot participate in politics or something? I vaguely remember from all the sageuk drama I have watched. It's like they cannot have power or something. Does this mean this theory is wrong?

I am open to corrections and proofs.

  9. finished watching ... some thoughts...

I dont know why a respectful Korean Society allows such abuse by teachers to their students. Well, I guess respect is not warranted from elders and sunbaes. The seniors usually abuse their juniors *very sad.* That teacher is not fit to be called "teacher."

What happened to ET's family? Are they in limbo like what KS did to the money lenders?

Someone mentioned that they hope ET is not lying about the sword. If she is, how did she know it was a sword? Did she actually hear GR when he was trying to telepathically talk to her?

ET must have grown on KS because he started missing her.

If becoming a GR means they committed a great sin in their previous life, then I dont think GR is the queen, he might be the King. Those tears he cried was for his queen, whom he subconsciously missed when he saw the ring he gave her. Has it been revealed how KS is related to the queen? I dont think he was in love with her like lovers, where they relatives or close friends? The way KS was close to the king, until that evil adviser brainwashed the king? Do you think that evil adviser also reincarnated? Who would he be? the nephew? Did you notice the car he bought with the 20 years worth of rent that GR paid him???? It's a maserati!!!! Remember when he was first introduced to KS, the grandpa said he was spoiled? I guess it continued until now, his grandpa was never able to correct his upbringing.. He got a building for his birthday for goodness sake! (did u see that Sunny's Chicken business is in his bldg??) He blew away 20 years worth of rent on one car and  now he is begging for a credit card because he is short of money.

KES said that every one of the characters will stand out in this drama and so far so good.

During the press conference, Kim Eun Sook also thanked Gong Yoo, the lead character, for accepting her invitation to be in her drama after 5 long years of turning her down. She revealed that even though Gong Yoo rejected her offers for many years, but for this drama, he accepted right away!

I wonder if she offered DOTS to GY first? I wouldnt mind hehehe. he is so manly, no offense to SJK though. SJK looks too boyish for SHK.

I finally got home and watching the drama with subs *thank you dramafever!* and I cant help but rewind every time they show GY. I just realized how much I missed him since Coffee Prince (I think I will rewatch that soon!). I did not watch BIG because I did not like the storyline. As I was watching the scene with ET cooking ramen and GY keeps saying that she hates him, I was thinking to myself, "OMG how can you hate someone that handsome?!?!?!??!" I usually like men with prominent jaw and chin, but GY doesnt need any of that at all! I think he is one of those rare korean actors that does not have that typical straight with bangs covering their forehead hairstyle. Although his hairstyle is one popularized by Charlie Chaplin (i have forgotten how to add pics!), LOL, he still looks gorgeous!!!!

Ok I am going to watch now.

    Hi

This is my first time I am posting on soompi forum, couldn't help myself rather Goblin compelled me to. Had to fangirl/discuss this show with someone. :D

I must say the pilot and the second episode are a treat to watch. Cinematography, acting, direction and casting is worth watching. This is the first time I am seeing the works of all leads(excluding Yoo In Ah..saw her in MLFAS) I other than having some reservations of the lead actress, all of them have impressed me alot. Especially Grim Reaper (Lee Dong Wook)..another Oppa in my long list of oppas:wub:

I have a question though..Grim Reaper WY suffers from amnesia. I didn't really catch that part and did they show any instances where he actually forgets something? He forgot to remove shower cap though..but that isn't amnesia..:grimace:

Welcome! It does help to discuss the drama with other fans to keep us sane until the next episode!:D

Regarding the amnesia plot, I was thinking about it. For an amnesiac GR, he seems to remember a lot. When ET was 9 GR remembered who her and her mother was. He knows the old lady, he almost slipped and revealed her identity. In the present, he knows who the goblin was, remembers the rumors about the goblin. When he met ET, he remembers her from when she was 9 and was protected by the old lady. Does he have selective amnesia? He has been alive for what? 300 years? (since Korea is a very respectful country, he needs to show respect to the goblin who is older than him) Maybe he forgot his origin, who he was before he became a GR? And are GRs born as human first and then, like the goblin, turned into a GR? I hope the writer enlightens us about his origin. My vague knowledge of a GR (in general. not the korean one) is that there is only ONE GR and this being has been alive since forever.

  13. somehow I think we will get a time jump. KGE is 25 years old and playing a 19 year old character as of episode 2. Maybe the goblin will leave and come back when ET is older?

Why is that boy (the descendant of his slave/companion) so different from all his ancestors and why does the goblin let him get away with a lot of things?

Why does this goblin have so much power, he is like God Himself (emphasis on the capital G & H). The drama described him as water, land and fire, light and darkness. He can give life, control the elements, GR seems to be cautious towards him. When he sank that ship, I won't be surprised if they show him walking on water as well. As we saw in the drama there is more than one GR, but is there only one goblin???

But then, when ET summoned him in church, he cant do anything, he was powerless .... so are his powers from the devil? He was able to come into the church, just cant do anything. Only 2 episodes and already making me use up so many brain cells!

  14. I googled what a korean goblin is because what I see in the drama is different from what I knew about goblins growing up. Although they share the same physical attributes, being extremely ugly (and GY is far from being ugly!), the goblins I knew never had a good heart like GY goblin, so it was hard for me to relate. The information below kinda helped a bit. So that is why GY is connected to his sword because Korean Goblins come from inanimate objects. If you noticed at the end of the description below, it mentioned a hat that makes Korean goblins invisible, is this were they got the GR's hat idea? It makes him invisible to humans when he wears it.

Dokkaebi (Korean: 도깨비) is a mythical being in Korean folklore or fairy tales. Although usually frightening, it could also represent a humorous, grotesque-looking ogre or goblin. These creatures love mischief and playing mean tricks on bad people. They also reward good people with wealth and blessings. They are different from Gwisin (Korean귀신; Ghost) in that  they are not formed by the death of a human being, but rather by the transformation of an inanimate object.

    Characteristics[edit]

Different versions of the Dokkaebi mythology assign different attributes to them. In some cases they are considered harmless but nevertheless mischievous, usually playing pranks on people or challenging wayward travellers to a ssireum (Korean wrestling) match for the right to pass.

Most Dokkaebi carry a kind of club called a Dokkaebi Club(도깨비 방망이). They are like magic wands, from which it can summon anything it wants. Unfortunately, when it gets something by using it, it gets things by stealing from someone else, because this club can only summon existing things, and it does not create objects out of thin air.

Dokkaebi love to play games, especially ssireum as mentioned above. They are extremely good at it and one will never be able to beat them by trying to push them from the left side. However, they are very weak on the right side. In other stories one should hook their leg and push them to win, as they have only one leg.

Dokkaebi can also have a cap which is called dokkaebi gamtu (도깨비 감투). Its most well-known ability is that it gives the wearer invisibility.
